    • A leitura desse livro, com que Márcia Sá Cavalcante Schuback quis oferecer uma aventura de pensamento e criação ao centenário da UFRJ, teve sobre mim o efeito de uma velocíssima visita a um passado bom. A um tempo melhor, habitado pelo entusiasmo e a esperança. Não é pouca coisa para acarinhar esse nosso tempo de encarceramento e morte. É talvez banal dizer que me propiciou uma viagem no tempo. Mas quando, nessa nossa tortuosa atualidade, as utopias fugiram do horizonte – os horizontes fugiram – e os futuros se insinuam catastróficos e distópicos, às vezes o passado é o tempo da esperança. Foi para lá que viajei. Trabalhamos juntos, Márcia e eu, na gestão do reitor Horácio Macedo (1985-1990). Saíamos da ditadura, ele foi o primeiro reitor eleito pela comunidade acadêmica no Brasil, um renascimento da universidade crítica, cheia de energia vital. Ele me convidou para dirigir o Fórum de Ciência e Cultura, e para essa aventura do pensamento que age foi que trouxe Márcia do seu doutorado no IFCS. E ela fez acontecer. Fizemos juntos. Ombro a ombro, se diz. Pois foi assim: ombro a ombro. O Fórum era um vazio. Vazio institucional, de ideias, de beleza. O que Márcia fez foi povoá-lo, na área da cultura, com inteligência, sons, imagens, corpos em movimento. Excelentes ciclos de conferências, música, teatro, exposições. Arte que pensa, pensamento que se dá a ver no brilho da beleza, que é um dos modos de desencobrimento da Verdade. E o registro dessa ressurreição – na verdade, desse primeiro nascimento – foi pensado na revista Arte e Palavra, que criou e dirigiu. Foram apenas quatro números. Faltava-nos tudo até para esses quatro. Foram feitos. Mais não deu. Mas são até hoje o arquivo múltiplo de uma bela experiência do pensamento que faz, da criação que pensa. A essa experiência é dedicado esse livro. Descreve uma história, fundamenta um projeto, alegra-se com as pessoas que estiveram ao seu lado, que aí continuam, amizades dessas que, como se diz, “fazem-se no trabalho”. É muito mais do que isso, é muito melhor. São pessoas que se criaram juntas, à medida em que iam criando um mundo, que não existia. Criação, poiese, poesia em ato. Isso não é um trabalho apenas, é uma vida. Pode ser um destino. Se for assim – e foi, dou testemunho -, esse projeto, trazido aqui de novo à memória, bem podia desentupir os canais do futuro e reintroduzir esperanças. Redesenhar utopias alegres.

    • Smärta är ett fenomen som alla är bekanta med. Smärtan har många ansikten. Kulturen arbetar ständigt med att finna tekniker för att undvika och lindra smärtan, men den förblir en ofrånkomlig följeslagare genom livet. Inom medicinen finns en omfattande litteratur och forskning om smärta och smärtlindring. Men hur kan vi beskriva smärtan som filosofiskt och kulturellt fenomen? Vad är smärta, och vad är det att erfara smärta? Boken samlar nyskrivna bidrag från svenska och utländska forskare inom filosofi, litteratur och teologi, som alla på olika sätt och utifrån olika utgångspunkter reflekterar över detta påtagliga men samtidigt undflyende fenomen. Den avslutas med den tyske författaren Ernst Jüngers berömda essä från 1934 ”Om smärtan”, som för första gången översatts i sin helhet till svenska. Sammantaget vill boken visa på vikten av att reflektera över smärtan i en värld som i sin strävan att lindra den också tenderar att fjärma sig frånden, och den vill därmed bidra till en vidare filosofisk förståelse av det som med Edith Södergrans ord ”… ger oss våra sällsamma själar och besynnerliga tycken”.

  • Kunskapens gräns, gränsens vetande : En fenomenologisk undersökning av transcendens och kroppslighet

    • The limit between the proper and the foreign – how this limit is established, but also crossed and dissolved – has remained a crucial issue in phenomenology. Setting these questions in the context of the phenomenology of religion, this thesis develops an analysis of the relation between transcendence and body understood in terms of a certain limit. The introductory part is rooted in Edmund Husserl’s discussions of the concept of transcendence, which is shown to have an essential connection to the analysis of inner time-consciousness. Here we encounter a decisive limit to objectifying knowledge, which also comes across in his investigations of the body and its spatiality. The second part discusses Max Scheler’s critique of Husserl’s excessively objectifying view of knowledge, with a particular focus on Scheler’s understanding of love as a condition of possibility for any knowledge. Scheler is shown to have developed a new concept of transcendence that avoids the pitfalls of objectivism, although in his philosophy of religion he tends to downplay the importance of the body. The third part undertakes a reading of Edith Stein, who develops ideas similar to Scheler’s, though in a phenomenologically more nuanced fashion. Although her philosophy of religion also bypasses the body, Stein provides a more genuine access to the writings of the mystics, the analysis of which forms the core of the fourth and concluding part. Drawing on the work of the 13th century Beguine Mechthild of Magdeburg, this concluding chapter develops a phenomenological understanding of religion with an emphasis on transcendence and limit, while also retaining the centrality of our experience of the body. This means: a phenomenology of the limit is investigated, rather than a limit of phenomenology.

    • In this reading a notion of the human is developed through an engagement with the work of French philosopher Emanuel Levinas. The argument is that, with the help of Levinas, it is possible for the idea of the human to be understood anew, for the notion to be ‘resaid’. This resaying of the human is performed in a critical appropriation of the philosophical tradition: Levinas’s work is shown not to be a new variation of the complacent ideology of humanism; the idea of the human is instead interpreted to be the bearer of the very movement of critique. This movement is articulated in terms of a transcendence of a discursive ‘economy of violence’. Critique does not establish a permanent position outside of violence, but is a movement that must constantly be renewed.Here Levinas is offered as a modern thinker of particular relevance for contemporary discussions surrounding the nature both of the political and of Human Rights. In addition one finds a systematic analysis of the major works of Levinas, unraveling how a notion of the human develops from within his philosophy.Levinas’s thought is placed alongside philosophical figures of his time, such as Heidegger, Sartre, Bataille, Lévi-Strauss, Althusser, Foucault and Derrida, as well as more recent political thinkers, for example, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben and Jacques Rancière.

    • This dissertation examines precision as an aesthetic concept and practice in texts by Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969), Inger Christensen (1935–2009) and Herta Müller (1953–). Although often referred to in contemporary criticism as a marker of aesthetic value, precision in literature has rarely been the subject of academic study. The dissertation relates the meaning of precision in literature to its meaning in and for the natural sciences and takes the conceptual dependence of the former on the latter as its point of departure. It presupposes a connection between scientific or mathematical precision and the concept of nihilism, and, in a further step, makes the claim that modern literary precision should be viewed in light of a history fraught by nihilistic destruction. Two poetological texts by the poet Paul Celan (1920–1970) are identified as places where the concept of precision in its double function – both scientific/nihilistic and literary/poetic – is explicated in a historically decisive way. Together, they are construed as an interpretative frame for the subsequent readings of Gombrowicz, Christensen and Müller. The idea of “the zero point” as a point of orientation for literary precision is mapped out by way of an interpretation of Celan’s notion of “the date”. Literary precision is presented as a form of sensibility, determined by and determining sensible particulars, rather than general and abstract rules. The close readings of Gombrowicz, Christensen and Müller, focus on formative passages in each of the writer’s works where such sensibility is brought to the fore. Each reading is structured around a trope – the antinomy in the case of Gombrowicz, the chiasm in the case of Christensen and the simile in the case of Müller. All three are shown to reflect the act of precision in practice, express its guiding sensibility and demonstrate that it is paradoxical in nature – it can, so it is argued, ultimately be understood as a precision of the imprecise.

    • The present investigation discusses the phenomenological concept of the phenomenon through an interpretation of the meaning of the negativity of the phenomenon in the philosophical works of Martin Heidegger, Jan Patočka and Eugen Fink. This negativity is thematised in terms of a loss and a privation that leads to a description of the appearing of the phenomenon as a sublime event, which exposes existence to an absence of meaning. A formulation of the absence in question as a dynamic movement of existence opens a new perspective on what it means to do phenomenology: phenomenological thinking does not begin with the immediate givenness of appearance, but through the trembling of meaning in the experience of a loss of the phenomenon.

  • Rendering the Sublime : A Reading of Marina Tsvetaeva's Fairy-Tale Poem The Swain

    • The present study is a reading of the folkloric fairy-tale poem The Swain (Mólodets) (1924) by the Russian Modernist poet Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941).The poem represents a high point in Tsvetaeva’s experiments with Russian folk art, and it is thoroughly folkloric in its theme, forms of writing and poetic language. At the same time, the poem can be linked to the attraction to folk art as a locus of the Sublime in literary tradition, which originates in German Romanticism, and finds its echoes in Russian Modernism. This study seeks to show that Tsvetaeva’s exploration of folk art in the poem was inspired by a quandary linked to the Sublime; namely the paradoxical question how to present in art what is too great to be represented.The poem is read as an image and an illustration of the poet’s understanding of the means of presenting the unrepresentable. Tsvetaeva renders the tale as an uncanny story about a horrifying elemental force. She seeks to avoid representation by bringing out the story in a poetic performance, which has the character of a lyrical drama, where the voices of the characters speak and sing in a direct manner. Within the canvas of the folkloric performance, the poet explores poetic language to render the Sublime. She experiments with secondary meanings in order to bring out a language, which at the same time is “secret” and “literal”, and where the element can be made present in its sublimity.

  • Lethe : On Forgetfulness as a Guiding Principle in Artistic Processes

    • With the artistic research project Lethe, musicians and researchers Andreas Hiroui Larsson [percussion], Johan Jutterström [saxophone], and Anna Lindal [violin], investigated forgetfulness as a method and guiding principle for an artistic process, by using the ancient Greek mythological river Lethe as their point of departure. The Lethe was considered to possess the property of forgetfulness, and the research group met—metaphorically—over the course of three years, at its riverbanks. The name Lethe means concealment, and is related to the Greek word for truth: alētheia (that contains the word lēthē), which literally means un-concealment. As such, forgetfulness may both cause concealment and be part of constructing un-concealment. From their campsite at the riverbank of the Lethe, the research group intended to research forgetfulness in relation to their respective personal artistic practices, within the field of western art and improvised music. They also attempted at constructing coherent theoretical standpoints, to help them, and possibly others, navigate the river’s currents and—in the end—present an example of what their research could lead to artistically and discursively. The Roman poet Virgil wrote in his epic poem Aeneid that it is only after we have had our memory erased by the Lethe that we can become reborn. What are we willing to forget when we meet at the riverbanks of the Lethe, and gaze at the waters that can wash away our previous musical lives?

    • Sedan tidigt åttiotal, när Sven-Olov Wallenstein slog ner i Stockholms intellektuella liv, har han vuxit till en kraftfull och mångförgrenad institution i sig, under sitt kärnfulla emblem: Walle. Med avstamp i filosofin och idéhistorien har han gripit in i den estetiska debatten som ingen annan under dessa gångna fyra decennier. Genom egna böcker och genom översättningar, genom tidskrifter, recensioner, katalogtexter, och inte minst genom sin undervisning runtom i Sverige och Norden har han på djupet påverkat diskussionen inom konst, arkitektur, men även inom litteratur, dans, musik och film. Som uttolkare och översättare av den klassiska tyska filosofin – Kant, Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger och Adorno – liksom av dess moderna franska arvtagare – Derrida, Foucault och Deleuze – har han på ett avgörande sätt bidragit till att återknyta det band mellan svensk och europeisk idékultur som den föregående generationens ofta historielösa omfamning av angloamerikansk analytisk filosofi hade klippt av.För att fira Walle har vi satt ihop en bok. Det har inte blivit en pliktbok, ingen sedvanlig samling lärda uppsatser som följer vänbokens konventioner. Istället för en festskrift, fick det bli en skriftfest, en bild- och uttrycks-fest, där skrivande och skapandet självt firas. Walle har arbetat hårdare än de flesta, men till sist var det alltid festen som var målet, releasen, partyt, skrattet och galenskapen. Vad vore en filosof som inte skrattar? Inte en Walle, inte den som förmår förvandla tunga resonemang till klara linjer, komplexa relationer till glad geometri, och mångfaldiga ord till färgstarka, träffande och koncentrerade bilder.

    • In this text, a dialogue about the difficult task of seizing the sense of history today is presented. The point of departure is the difficulty of the times to begin and the necessity to rethink the difference between historiography and historicity, and further between events, the event and the advent. The dialogue proposes to revisit the meaning of beginning from out of the experience of improvisation and to reflect upon the possibility of developing improvisation as a sense of history.

    • Eros manifests itself in multiple ways: as tragic eros and philosophical eros, as love, sexuality, seduction, care, desire, and friendship. Eros both defines us as beings and dislocates our existence. It breaks down our certitudes about selfhood and otherness, familiarity and strangeness. This volume gathers together contributions toward a phenomenological understanding of eros. The first part examines eros in relation to ancient philosophy and religion, the second part examines eros in relation to modern phenomenology. The analyses presented show how the question of eros brings us to the core of philosophy. Questions of time, desire, embodiment, intersubjectivity, and perception are all implicated in the phenomenology of eros.

    • The present investigation develops the notion of sociality based on Emmanuel Levinas’s thought, and proposes an understanding of sociality that resists becoming a common foundation: an un-common sociality which interrupts the reciprocal shared common, and thereby, paradoxically, makes it possible. By engaging in the larger debate on community, this work gives voice to Levinas on the question of community without a common ground, a topic and a debate where he has previously been underestimated. In this way, the aim is to reveal new directions opened up by Levinas’s philosophy in order to think an un-common sociality.

    • This dissertation is divided into three sections, and treats three essential ideas in the philoso­phical notes of Friedrich von Hardenberg (also known as Novalis): 1) the critique of the foun­dationalist tendency in the systematic philosophy of idealism and the development of a “logological” perspective on philosophy, language and art; 2) the formation of a romantic phi­losophy based on a theory of experimentation and invention; and 3) the creation of a universal encyclopaedia in order to explicate the inner unity of all sciences and arts. Taken together, these three ideas constitute a theory of creativity and inventiveness in Man that no longer serves as a theory of art or poetry proper. It broadens the concepts of philosophy, imagination and creativity and outlines a paraesthetic theory.The first part focuses on the concept of a philosophical system and Hardenberg’s disapproval of the idea that an unconditional first principle of philosophy will ground the system of the ab­solute held by his former teacher K.L. Reinhold and J.G. Fichte. His view that the nature of being is non-systematic led him to the conviction that no philosophy can capture the totality. Life, language and knowledge can be reflected upon only in terms of non-foundational princi­ples and this reflection should be a “logological” approach to philosophy that ultimately forms a “transcendental poetry.”The second part investigates the product of the “logological” critique of Fichte, i.e. the ro­mantic philosophy. This study stresses the influence of Spinoza and Plotinos in Hardenberg’s theory of the I and its creative potential. What Hardenberg identifies as “romantic” is a) the relation between the known and the unknown (as well as the relation between inside and out­side, outwards and inwards) and b) an epistemological and cognitive operation preformed by the I in “series of variation.” The theory of the romantic operation leads to his theory of ex­perimentation and invention. In Hardenberg’s view, experimentation is not only the task of sci­entific practice, it is the very experience and conception of reality that is experimental. This concept of experiment is considered in relation to his ideas about mathematics and combina­torics.The third and last part investigates how and why Hardenberg’s training at the mining acad­emy in Freiberg and his acquaintance with the mineralogist A.G. Werner is important for understanding his attempt to construct a general encyclopaedia, Das Allgemeine Brouillon (The Universal Draft). Without any centre or fixed field of study, Hardenberg’s encyclopaedia is his answer to the systematic philosophers of his time, that it is possible to put “non-systema­tisation in a system.” The last part focuses on Hardenberg’s “revision” of his teacher Werner’s system of classification and its implications for the composition of the encyclopaedia as well as his interpretation of nature as a language and language as nature.

    • Departing from a reading of the Black Notes, I will present and discuss Heidegger’s apocalyptical vision at the basis of his concept of the History of Being. I will follow his figuration of the end as endless end and its relation to the thoughts of the other beginning as the main point in his conflictive relation to theology and Christianity and compare to his later thoughts on the end, presented in the later essay about the end of philosophy and the task of thinking. This discussion about the Apocalypse of Heidegger is in my view an important path to understand both his Anti-Semitism and anti-Christianism. © The Author(s) 2017.

    • This final chapter closes the historical circuit by addressing the continuation of sacrificial themes in contemporary continental philosophy. Marcia Sá Cavalcante Schuback’s point of departure is the relation between philosophy and sacrifice in Jean-Luc Nancy’s readings of the philosophy of sacrifice as proposed by Georges Bataille in the 1940s. In showing how Bataille’s philosophy of sacrifice accomplishes rather than overcomes the philosophical sacrifice of the singular for the sake of the universal, Nancy argues for a suspension of the philosophical concept of sacrifice and addresses the idea of an open offering of singular finite being. In question here is not the end of sacrifice, nor the sacrifice for ends, but the unsacrificeable finite offering of existence.

    • The article discusses Heidegger's thought on the essence of language, taking as the guiding thread of the discussion his reflections in the book A caminho da linguagem. He emphasizes that to understand Heidegger's statements it is necessary to assume that the saying of language is not a saying about being, reality, things, but a saying of the experience of being. The core of the text is, therefore, centered on the question of what is language as an experience of a saying from experience. Faced with the philosophical tradition that seeks to base the principles for saying experience in order to ensure the correspondence between language and reality, Heidegger proposes a saying from experience and, thus, a saying that is itself experience of experience.
