  • Demokratins möjligheter i Mellanöstern : (Delstudie 3, MENA-projektet)
  • 1999

  • The Middle East: regional instability and fragmentation
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Mary Farell, Björn Hettne, and Luk Van Langenhove (eds.), Global politics of regionalism: theory and practice, London/Ann Arbour: Pluto Press.
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • (About the book:) A new book, published by Pluto Press, explores the phenomenon of regionalism. In a seeming contradiction to globalization, there is a growing tendency for countries to enter into regional arrangements as a response to the pressures of operating in a global marketplace. But regionalism is also emerging as a phenomenon in its own right, serving distinct purposes and taking different forms in different areas. The contributors explore how these patterns impact on wider issues such as global governance, democracy and trade. The book reviews the major theoretical approaches to regional cooperation including perspectives from international relations, political economy, economics and sociology. It is divided into three main sections: theoretical approaches to regionalism; issues of regional cooperation (such as security, monetary issues, identity and integration); and an exploration of specific case studies including the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, China, Europe, Asia and the Pacific. The volume is the result of a joint UNU-CRIS- Padrigu (Gotheborg) project to which participated nine scholars affiliated to UNU-CRIS and/or Padrigu, together with thirteen other leading scholars in the field.

  • Genome-wide association and large-scale follow up identifies 16 new loci influencing lung function.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nature genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 43:11, s. 1082-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pulmonary function measures reflect respiratory health and are used in the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We tested genome-wide association with forced expiratory volume in 1 second and the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to forced vital capacity in 48,201 individuals of European ancestry with follow up of the top associations in up to an additional 46,411 individuals. We identified new regions showing association (combined P < 5 × 10(-8)) with pulmonary function in or near MFAP2, TGFB2, HDAC4, RARB, MECOM (also known as EVI1), SPATA9, ARMC2, NCR3, ZKSCAN3, CDC123, C10orf11, LRP1, CCDC38, MMP15, CFDP1 and KCNE2. Identification of these 16 new loci may provide insight into the molecular mechanisms regulating pulmonary function and into molecular targets for future therapy to alleviate reduced lung function.

  • Defining and Analyzing “Resistance”: Possible Entrances to the Study of Subversive Practices
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Alternatives: Global, Local, Political. - THOUSAND OAKS, CA 91320 USA : SAGE Publications. - 0304-3754 .- 2163-3150. ; 41:3, s. 137-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the meaning of “resistance” and suggests a new path for “resistance studies,” which is an emerging and interdisciplinary field of the social sciences that is still relatively fragmented and heterogeneous. Resistance has often been connected with antisocial attitudes, destructiveness, reactionary or revolutionary ideologies, unusual and sudden explosions of violence, and emotional outbursts. However, we wish to add to this conceptualization by arguing that resistance also has the potential to be productive, plural and fluid, and integrated into everyday social life. The first major part of the article is devoted to discuss existing understandings of resistance with the aim of seeking to capture distinctive features and boundaries of this social phenomenon. Among other things, we will explore resistance in relation to other key concepts and related research fields. We then, in the article’s second major part, propose a number of analytical categories and possible entrances aiming at inspire more in-depth studies of resistance.

  • The ABC of resistance: towards a new analytical framework
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two significant developments – (1) the rapidly changing world order, and (2) significant gaps in current social science scholarship – call for a further exploration of resistance theories. In this paper, we identify some of the gaps and inconsistencies within the current bulk of research, and seek to contribute to the understanding of resistance, its applications and complexity. In short, this paper discusses three interacting and supporting forms of resistance, including various overlaps and interlinkages between them, which together constitute what we would like to call the ABC of resistance; that is, avoidance resistance, breaking resistance, and constructive resistance.

  • A highly magnetized twin-jet base pinpoints a supermassive black hole
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 593
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Supermassive black holes (SMBH) are essential for the production of jets in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Theoretical models based on (Blandford & Znajek 1977, MNRAS, 179, 433) extract the rotational energy from a Kerr black hole, which could be the case for NGC1052, to launch these jets. This requires magnetic fields on the order of 10(3) G to 10(4) G. We imaged the vicinity of the SMBH of the AGN NGC1052 with the Global Millimetre VLBI Array and found a bright and compact central feature that is smaller than 1.9 light days (100 Schwarzschild radii) in radius. Interpreting this as a blend of the unresolved jet bases, we derive the magnetic field at 1 Schwarzschild radius to lie between 200 G and similar to 8.3 x 10(4) G consistent with Blandford & Znajek models.

  • Academics' manufacturing of counter-narratives as knowledge resistance of official hegemonic narratives in identity conflicts
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 13:2, s. 285-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article illustrates how official hegemonic narratives of armed conflicts and history are resisted by academics by generating counter-narratives and how this affects the public perception of identity conflicts. Due to the relatively high status of academics, critical and alternative knowledge production serve as a tool for resistance against the mainstream narrative. In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we discuss competing narratives, and how new narratives by various academics challenge the official narrative. In the case of Rwanda where the resistance is more clandestine, we demonstrate how the official narrative is challenged by academics and individuals based outside the country. In the case of Sri Lanka, we highlight how two dominant narratives, one by the government and the other by the rebels, competed with the counter-narratives. Overall, we demonstrate how counter-narratives construed to serve as a form of resistance are unfolding in various struggles, and how the gradual impact of academics' agencies on changing hegemonic narratives finds a contextual definition.

  • How resistance encourages resistance: theorizing the nexus between power, 'Organised Resistance' and 'Everyday Resistance'
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 10:1, s. 40-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lately, the concept of 'resistance' has gained considerable traction as a tool for critically exploring subaltern practices in relation to power. Few researchers, however, have elaborated on the inter-linkage of shifting forms of resistance; and above all, how acts of everyday resistance entangle with more organized and sometimes mass-based resistance activities. In this paper, these entanglements are analysed by taking into consideration the connections between articulations of resistance and technologies of power. Empirical observations from Cambodia are theorized in order to provide better theoretical tools for searching and investigating the inter-linkage between different resistance forms that contribute to social change. In addition, it is argued that modalities of power and its related resistance must be understood, or theorized, in relation to the concepts of 'agency', 'selfreflexivity' and 'techniques of the self'.

  • WHITHER DEMOCRACY IN PALESTINE? PALESTINIAN PUBLIC OPINION SURVEYS TOWARDS DEMOCRACY, 1997-2016
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Holy Land and Palestine Studies. - : Edinburgh University Press. - 2054-1988 .- 2054-1996. ; 21:2, s. 176-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the extent of Palestinian public support for democracy through the time period from 1997 to 2016. The analysis is based on data collected from five public surveys launched in the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip. Our findings show that evidently the Palestinians support almost all elements of democracy, measured in these surveys, and support moderately few others, especially freedom of establishing parties and not using violent means to overthrow a 'bad' government. Our findings also reveal that this support is nearly constant and has not changed significantly since the early years of the Oslo accords era until recently. Based on these findings, and a few others revealed by using multiple regression analysis, we argue that Palestinian public opinion is not fully democratic, but rather is semi (or nearly) democratic. We also argue that the cultural hypothesis, claiming that Muslim Arab culture is incompatible with democracy, has no support according to the empirical evidence of this study.

  • The Conflict Snowflake: An Eclectic Evolution of Conflict Theory
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Swedish Peace and Conflict Network (PRIS), Biennial Symposium. Lund, 27-28 September.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Why do conflict episodes occur and, more importantly, what determines whether they manifest into destructive, constructive, or even neutral social experiences? We seek to answer these questions through the elaboration of a new theoretical model of fully articulated conflict: the Conflict Snowflake. This model serves as an alternative representation of conflict that draws from, synthesizes, and transforms significant contributions to peace and conflict research over the last 50 years. Specifically, the Conflict Snowflake incorporates and reconfigures the components of contradiction, attitudes, and behaviors described by Galtung; while identifying and integrating additional crucially important conflict features such context, needs, history, power, identity, beliefs, and emotions. We employ these fundamental conflict features to create a model of the four phases of fully articulated conflict: 1) contradiction, 2) interpretation, 3) manifestation, and 4) modification. We argue that our eclectic model provides new tools to understand both how and why conflicts occur and develop in particular ways. We conclude by demonstrating how the Conflict Snowflake model provides new avenues for conflict analysis through an exploration of the politicized insult, ‘snowflake’— a 150-year-old aspersion that took on new meaning in 2016. This analysis helps us to bring forward conflict features that are under-emphasized in the ABC model.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Third World Quarterly. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0143-6597 .- 1360-2241. ; 42:5, s. 867-881
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The debate triggered by recent publications and research justifying colonialism demands an intellectual engagement with the histories of colonialism, and their impact on postcolonial trajectories of development, peace and conflict. The argument that colonialism inspired development in societies that embraced its modernity project, enlightened governance and efficient administration–which in turn inspired national consciousness embedded in anti-colonial struggles–has been extensively critiqued. However, less attention has been paid to colonialism’s enduring everyday impact and visible continuities. We argue that the present political moment defined by right-wing, conservative and insular nationalisms and racisms–particularly in Western polities–requires deeper critique. It demands an intensive re-engagement with colonialism’s legacies, the politics of race and racism and the postcolonial (un)making of ‘selfhood’ and ‘nation-statehood’ evidenced in many parts of the world. This collection revisits the impact of colonialism on the postcolonial politics and decolonial developments in Africa; its focus is to reinvestigate the endurance and efficacy of the power relations devised and propagated by the European colonial projects and their continued presence in African states and societies.

  • Regionalization in a globalizing world : A comparative perspective on forms, actors and processes
  • 2001
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This volume explores one important feature of the new global politics: the emerging role of regional systems of relations. Its contributors concentrate on the following questions: What constitutes a region? How is the historical process of region-formation developing? What are the roles of the main state and non-state actors involved? What motives and fundamental factors underlie the drive to regionalization? Where, and in what shape, are new forms of regional awareness and institutionalization emerging? What are the future prospects? The book examines eleven different regions that are coming into existence in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa and shows how regionalization is an unevenly developing, heterogeneous and multi-dimensional phenomenon. The contributors are all area specialists, but from a range of disciplines. Strong comparative essays put the empirical material in the context of the diverse strands of new thinking in international studies that is emerging.

  • Routledge handbook on Middle East security : Handbook on Middle East security
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Routledge Handbook on Middle East Security provides the fi rst comprehensive look at Middle East security issues that includes both traditional and emerging security threats. Taking a broad perspective on security, the volume off ers both analysis grounded in the ‘hard’ military and state security discourse but also delves into the ‘soft’ aspects of security employing a human security perspective. As such the volume addresses imminent challenges to security, such as the ones relating directly to the war in Syria, but also the long- term challenges. The traditional security problems, which are deep- seated, are at the risk of being exacerbated also by a lack of focus on emerging vulnerabilities in the region. While taking as a point of departure the prevalent security discourse, the volume also goes beyond the traditional focus on military or state security and considers non- traditional security challenges. This book provides a state of- the- art review of research on the key challenges for security in the Middle East; it will be a key resource for students and scholars interested in Security Studies, International Relations, Political Science and Middle Eastern studies.

  • A longue durée approach to the role of civil society in the uprisings against authoritarianism in the Arab world
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Civil Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1744-8689 .- 1744-8697. ; 11:4, s. 424-439
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article will show how a ‘new history’, inspired from longue durée approaches, can be methodologically applied, and how it equips us with analytical tools that improve our capacity to understand the long-term changes that fostered the civil society-based resistance in the Arab world. Although we cannot predict the exact timing of such resistance efforts, the application of the longue durée method provides us with tools that help us understand why and how the many uprisings transpired. This complements, and partly contrasts with, most previous research, which had its main focus on discussion of short-term factors that were claimed to have caused the Arab mass-mobilized resistance in 2010–2011. The article draws upon and intends to contribute to the theoretical debate on contentious politics within social movement research, resistance studies, and civil society-driven democratization research.

  • Between Resistance, Sharia Law, and Demo-Islamic Politics
  • 2020
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Despite the fact that many researchers have focused on Hamas' armed resistance activities, surprisingly few have theorised about the political choices and dilemmas that Hamas has faced in the context of the changing overarching conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. This study aims to show, theoretically, how context-dependent Hamas is when formulating its resistance and Demo-Islamic practise and that this occurs in interrelations with key actors of the conflict. This study also presents important new empirical data that, in part, also challenges previous research. Hamas is one of the very few Islamist organisations that has reached a governance position via democratic and fair elections. Thus, Hamas can serve as a case study of how Islamist may act in (quasi)democratic surroundings. At the same time, Hamas is a key actor in the overarching conflict, which has several unique characteristics. Hamas' armed resistance is described as an instrument for the Jihad against the Israeli occupation. However, the Dawa work at the grassroots level can also be seen as a resistance practice that can be identified as constructive resistance. The internal discussion in Hamas as to what strategies to apply, as will be shown, are also formed and impacted by various interrelations with external actors of the conflict. The Palestinian public, in particular, is a key actor that influences Hamas in various ways, although Fatah, PLO, Israel and other external actors also have their specific roles to play.

  • Civil resistance and democracy promotion : A Comparative Study Analysis
  • 2023
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book examines transnational civil society-based democracy-promoting resistance activities in Asia in a global era, focusing on the cases of Myanmar and Palestine. The work contributes to our understanding of the nexus between globalization, power and democracy by examining: (i) the ways in which globalization/global governance are influencing various resistance practices of the civil societies in Myanmar and Palestine, and what this means for local democracy promotion; and (ii) the ways in which these two civil societies influence and have a democracy-promoting impact on their respective communities. It is guided by the overarching question of how civil society-based resistance contributes to local democracy in Myanmar and Palestine. The book is structured as follows: both civil resistance cases begin with an overview of each country's non-violent resistance history, and the findings are then presented for the two cases, i.e., the pro-democracy movements in the Saffron uprising in Myanmar and the Bil'in village struggle against the Israeli Security Barrier plans to build through their farmlands. Then follows a presentation of the life-story interview made with two members from the respective campaigns. A concluding chapter proposes some new theoretical insights for how civil resistance can impact on democracy. The book empirically and theoretically contributes to our understanding of how civil society-based resistance and democracy interrelate in a global era. This book will be of much interest to students of civil resistance, democracy, Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies and international relations in general.
