  • A giant exoplanet orbiting a very-low-mass star challenges planet formation models
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 365:6460, s. 1441-1445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surveys have shown that super-Earth and Neptune-mass exoplanets are more frequent than gas giants around low-mass stars, as predicted by the core accretion theory of planet formation. We report the discovery of a giant planet around the very-low-mass star GJ 3512, as determined by optical and near-infrared radial-velocity observations. The planet has a minimum mass of 0.46 Jupiter masses, very high for such a small host star, and an eccentric 204-day orbit. Dynamical models show that the high eccentricity is most likely due to planet-planet interactions. We use simulations to demonstrate that the GJ 3512 planetary system challenges generally accepted formation theories, and that it puts constraints on the planet accretion and migration rates. Disk instabilities may be more efficient in forming planets than previously thought.

  • TOI-1801 b: A temperate mini-Neptune around a young M0.5 dwarf
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 680
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery, mass, and radius determination of TOI-1801 b, a temperate mini-Neptune around a young M dwarf. TOI-1801 b was observed in TESS sectors 22 and 49, and the alert that this was a TESS planet candidate with a period of 21.3 days went out in April 2020. However, ground-based follow-up observations, including seeing-limited photometry in and outside transit together with precise radial velocity (RV) measurements with CARMENES and HIRES revealed that the true period of the planet is 10.6 days. These observations also allowed us to retrieve a mass of 5.74 +/- 1.46 M-circle plus, which together with a radius of 2.08 +/- 0.12 R-circle plus, means that TOI-1801 b is most probably composed of water and rock, with an upper limit of 2% by mass of H-2 in its atmosphere. The stellar rotation period of 16 days is readily detectable in our RV time series and in the ground-based photometry. We derived a likely age of 600-800 Myr for the parent star TOI-1801, which means that TOI-1801 b is the least massive young mini-Neptune with precise mass and radius determinations. Our results suggest that if TOI-1801 b had a larger atmosphere in the past, it must have been removed by some evolutionary mechanism on timescales shorter than 1 Gyr.

  • TOI-1468: A system of two transiting planets, a super-Earth and a mini-Neptune, on opposite sides of the radius valley
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 666
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery and characterization of two small transiting planets orbiting the bright M3.0V star TOI-1468 (LSPM J0106+1913), whose transit signals were detected in the photometric time series in three sectors of the TESS mission. We confirm the planetary nature of both of them using precise radial velocity measurements from the CARMENES and MAROON-X spectrographs, and supplement them with ground-based transit photometry. A joint analysis of all these data reveals that the shorter-period planet, TOI-1468 b (P-b = 1.88 d), has a planetary mass of M-b = 3.21 +/- 0.24M(circle plus) and a radius of R-b = 1.280(-0.039)(+0.038) R-circle plus, resulting in a density of rho(b) = 8.39(-0.92)(+1.05) g cm(-3), which is consistent with a mostly rocky composition. For the outer planet, TOI-1468 c (P-c = 15.53 d), we derive a mass of M-c = 6.64(-0.68)(+0.67) M-circle plus, aradius of R-c = 2.06 +/- 0.04 R-circle plus, and a bulk density of rho(c) = 2.00(-0.19)(+0.21) g cm(-3), which corresponds to a rocky core composition with a H/He gas envelope. These planets are located on opposite sides of the radius valley, making our system an interesting discovery as there are only a handful of other systems with the same properties. This discovery can further help determine a more precise location of the radius valley for small planets around M dwarfs and, therefore, shed more light on planet formation and evolution scenarios.

  • Precise mass and radius of a transiting super-Earth planet orbiting the M dwarf TOI-1235: a planet in the radius gap?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the confirmation of a transiting planet around the bright weakly active M0.5 V star TOI-1235 (TYC 4384-1735-1, V ≈ 11.5 mag), whose transit signal was detected in the photometric time series of sectors 14, 20, and 21 of the TESS space mission. We confirm the planetary nature of the transit signal, which has a period of 3.44 d, by using precise RV measurements with the CARMENES, HARPS-N, and iSHELL spectrographs, supplemented by high-resolution imaging and ground-based photometry. A comparison of the properties derived for TOI-1235 b with theoretical models reveals that the planet has a rocky composition, with a bulk density slightly higher than that of Earth. In particular, we measure a mass of Mp = 5.9 ± 0.6 M⊕ and a radius of Rp = 1.69 ± 0.08 R⊕, which together result in a density of ρp = 6.7- 1.1+ 1.3 g cm-3. When compared with other well-characterized exoplanetary systems, the particular combination of planetary radius and mass places our discovery in the radius gap, which is a transition region between rocky planets and planets with significant atmospheric envelopes. A few examples of planets occupying the radius gap are known to date. While the exact location of the radius gap for M dwarfs is still a matter of debate, our results constrain it to be located at around 1.7 R⊕ or larger at the insolation levels received by TOI-1235 b (~60 S⊕). This makes it an extremely interesting object for further studies of planet formation and atmospheric evolution.

  • TOI-4438 b: a transiting mini-Neptune amenable to atmospheric characterization
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 685
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the confirmation and mass determination of a mini-Neptune transiting the M3.5 V star TOI-4438 (G 182-34) every 7.44 days. A transit signal was detected with NASA's TESS space mission in the sectors 40, 52, and 53. In order to validate the planet TOI-4438 b and to determine the system properties, we combined TESS data with high-precision radial velocity measurements from the CARMENES spectrograph, spanning almost one year, and ground-based transit photometry. We found that TOI-4438 b has a radius of Rb = 2.52 ± 0.13 R⊕ (5% precision), which together with a mass of Mb = 5.4 ± 1.1 M⊕ (20% precision), results in a bulk density of ρb = 1.85-0.44+0.51 g cm-3 (~28% precision), aligning the discovery with a volatile-rich planet. Our interior structure retrieval with a pure water envelope yields aminimum water mass fraction of 46% (1σ). TOI-4438 b is a volatile-rich mini-Neptune with likely H/He mixed with molecules, such as water, CO2, and CH4. The primary star has a J-band magnitude of 9.7, and the planet has a high transmission spectroscopy metric (TSM) of 136 ± 13. Taking into account the relatively warm equilibrium temperature of Teq = 435 ± 15 K, and the low activity level of its host star, TOI-4438 b is one of the most promising mini-Neptunes around an M dwarf for transmission spectroscopy studies.

  • Two super-Earths at the edge of the habitable zone of the nearby M dwarf TOI-2095
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 677
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main scientific goal of TESS is to find planets smaller than Neptune around stars that are bright enough to allow for further characterization studies. Given our current instrumentation and detection biases, M dwarfs are prime targets in the search for small planets that are in (or near) the habitable zone of their host star. In this work, we use photometric observations and CARMENES radial velocity (RV) measurements to validate a pair of transiting planet candidates found by TESS. The data were fitted simultaneously, using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedure and taking into account the stellar variability present in the photometric and spectroscopic time series. We confirm the planetary origin of the two transiting candidates orbiting around TOI-2095 (LSPM J1902+7525). The star is a nearby M dwarf (d = 41.90 ± 0.03 pc, Teff = 3759 ± 87 K, V = 12.6 mag), with a stellar mass and radius of M∗ = 0.44 ± 0.02 M· and R∗ = 0.44 ± 0.02 R·, respectively. The planetary system is composed of two transiting planets: TOI-2095b, with an orbital period of Pb = 17.66484 ± (7 A - 10- 5) days, and TOI-2095c, with Pc = 28.17232 ± (14 A - 10- 5) days. Both planets have similar sizes with Rb = 1.25 ± 0.07 R· and Rc = 1.33 ± 0.08 R· for planet b and planet c, respectively. Although we did not detect the induced RV variations of any planet with significance, our CARMENES data allow us to set stringent upper limits on the masses of these objects. We find Mb < 4.1 M· for the inner and Mc < 7.4 M· for the outer planet (95% confidence level). These two planets present equilibrium temperatures in the range of 300 350 K and are close to the inner edge of the habitable zone of their star.

  • Confirmation of an He I evaporating atmosphere around the 650-Myr-old sub-Neptune HD 235088 b (TOI-1430 b) with CARMENES
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 677
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • HD 235088 (TOI-1430) is a young star known to host a sub-Neptune-sized planet candidate. We validated the planetary nature of HD 235088 b with multiband photometry, refined its planetary parameters, and obtained a new age estimate of the host star, placing it at 600- 800 Myr. Previous spectroscopic observations of a single transit detected an excess absorption of He I coincident in time with the planet candidate transit. Here, we confirm the presence of He I in the atmosphere of HD 235088 b with one transit observed with CARMENES. We also detected hints of variability in the strength of the helium signal, with an absorption of -0.91 ± 0.11%, which is slightly deeper (2γ) than the previous measurement. Furthermore, we simulated the He I signal with a spherically symmetric 1D hydrodynamic model, finding that the upper atmosphere of HD 235088 b escapes hydrodynamically with a significant mass loss rate of (1.5-5) × 1010 g s-1 in a relatively cold outflow, with T = 3125 ±375 K, in the photon-limited escape regime. HD 235088 b (Rp = 2.045 ± 0.075 R⊕) is the smallest planet found to date with a solid atmospheric detection - not just of He I but any other atom or molecule. This positions it a benchmark planet for further analyses of evolving young sub-Neptune atmospheres.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics, Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 328:Conference 1, s. 012006-

    • Gaia will observe up to a billion stellar sources. Automated algorithms are under development to derive the atmospheric parameters of all observed spectra, from low resolution optical spectra alone or in synergy with high resolution spectra in the near-IR Ca II triplet region. To do so, a large database of state-of-the-art stellar libraries has been produced for the Gaia community, computed using different codes optimized for specific purposes. The choice to use different spectral codes in different regions of the H-R diagram raises the problem of the coherence of the different spectra, specifically in the transition zones. We present a comparison between the libraries from the point of view of spectra simulations for training the Gaia algorithms. We also present the implementation of these libraries into a Simple Stellar Population code.

  • Ingår i: Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-7757. ; 256:2-3, s. 171-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mixtures of ethyl (hydroxyethyl)cellulose (EHEC) and sodium dodecanoate (SDoD) were investigated using surface tension, conductivity and transmittance measurements. The parameters of the surfactant to polymer association processes such as the critical aggregation concentration (cac) and saturation of the polymer by SDoD (psp) were determined from the plots of surface tension and specific conductivity versus surfactant concentration. The transmittance versus [SDoD] profiles exhibited bands that, in conjunction with conductivity and surface tension data, gave support to the explanation of the behavior of EHEC-SDoD-water solutions. Transmittance bands determined in the presence of EHEC and surfactant are sensitive to the process of surfactant to polymer binding. In this process, a discontinuity point represented by a second broader peak in the transmittance plots was identified, implying a slight inhibition of the breakdown of the network process. This is explained as a kind of intermediate re-structural network of the complexes produced by the formation of regular SDoD micelles. It was demonstrated that the second conductivity breakpoint marks the polymer saturation by surfactant clusters, and the effect of the EHEC concentration on the process of binding can be described by a linear correlation when the psp breakpoint is plotted against the polymer concentration. • Ingår i: American Journal of Medical Genetics. Part A. - : Wiley. - 1552-4825 .- 1552-4833. ; 170:4, s. 918-929
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muenke syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by coronal suture craniosynostosis, hearing loss, developmental delay, carpal, and calcaneal fusions, and behavioral differences. Reduced penetrance and variable expressivity contribute to the wide spectrum of clinical findings. Muenke syndrome constitutes the most common syndromic form of craniosynostosis, with an incidence of 1 in 30,000 births and is defined by the presence of the p.Pro250Arg mutation in FGFR3. Participants were recruited from international craniofacial surgery and genetic clinics. Affected individuals, parents, and their siblings, if available, were enrolled in the study if they had a p.Pro250Arg mutation in FGFR3. One hundred and six patients from 71 families participated in this study. In 51 informative probands, 33 cases (64.7%) were inherited. Eighty-five percent of the participants had craniosynostosis (16 of 103 did not have craniosynostosis), with 47.5% having bilateral and 28.2% with unilateral synostosis. Females and males were similarly affected with bicoronal craniosynostosis, 50% versus 44.4% (P=0.84), respectively. Clefting was rare (1.1%). Hearing loss was identified in 70.8%, developmental delay in 66.3%, intellectual disability in 35.6%, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in 23.7%, and seizures in 20.2%. In patients with complete skeletal surveys (upper and lower extremity x-rays), 75% of individuals were found to have at least a single abnormal radiographical finding in addition to skull findings. This is the largest study of the natural history of Muenke syndrome, adding valuable clinical information to the care of these individuals including behavioral and cognitive impairment data, vision changes, and hearing loss.

  • Gliese 12 b: A Temperate Earth-sized Planet at 12 pc Ideal for Atmospheric Transmission Spectroscopy
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 969:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent discoveries of Earth-sized planets transiting nearby M dwarfs have made it possible to characterize the atmospheres of terrestrial planets via follow-up spectroscopic observations. However, the number of such planets receiving low insolation is still small, limiting our ability to understand the diversity of the atmospheric composition and climates of temperate terrestrial planets. We report the discovery of an Earth-sized planet transiting the nearby (12 pc) inactive M3.0 dwarf Gliese 12 (TOI-6251) with an orbital period (P(or)b) of 12.76 days. The planet, Gliese 12 b, was initially identified as a candidate with an ambiguous P-orb from TESS data. We confirmed the transit signal and P-orb using ground-based photometry with MuSCAT2 and MuSCAT3, and validated the planetary nature of the signal using high-resolution images from Gemini/NIRI and Keck/NIRC2 as well as radial velocity (RV) measurements from the InfraRed Doppler instrument on the Subaru 8.2 m telescope and from CARMENES on the CAHA 3.5 m telescope. X-ray observations with XMM-Newton showed the host star is inactive, with an X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity ratio of log L-X/L-bol approximate to - 5.7. Joint analysis of the light curves and RV measurements revealed that Gliese 12 b has a radius of 0.96 +/- 0.05 R-circle plus, a 3 sigma mass upper limit of 3.9M(circle plus), and an equilibrium temperature of 315 +/- 6 K assuming zero albedo. The transmission spectroscopy metric (TSM) value of Gliese 12 b is close to the TSM values of the TRAPPIST-1 planets, adding Gliese 12 b to the small list of potentially terrestrial, temperate planets amenable to atmospheric characterization with JWST.

    • Objectives: This analysis characterized changes in weight in participants with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or narcolepsy treated with solriamfetol (SunosiTM) 37.5 (OSA only), 75, 150, or 300 mg/d. Methods: In two 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trials and one 1-year open-label extension study, changes in weight were evaluated from baseline to end of study (week 12 or week 40 of the open -label extension [after up to 52 weeks of solriamfetol treatment]) in participants with OSA or narcolepsy. Results: After 12 weeks of solriamfetol treatment, median percent change in weight from baseline across all solriamfetol doses was-0.84%, compared with 0.54% for placebo, in participants with OSA; and-0.07%, compared with 3.08% for placebo, in participants with narcolepsy. After up to 52 weeks of solriamfetol treatment, overall median percent change in weight from baseline was-1.76%, which showed a dose-dependent pattern (75 mg, 0.57%; 150 mg,-1.2%; 300 mg,-2.5%).Results were similar in subgroups of participants with OSA or narcolepsy, with overall median percent changes in weight of-2.2% and-1.1%, respectively. After up to 52 weeks of solriamfetol treatment, the percentage of participants with weight loss >= 5% relative to baseline was 25.7% overall and increased in a dose -dependent manner (75 mg, 4.5%; 150 mg, 17.3%; 300 mg, 32.4%). Results were similar among sub-groups of participants with OSA or narcolepsy, with 26.4% and 24.2% of participants experiencing weight loss >= 5%, respectively. No weight-related treatment-emergent adverse events were serious. Conclusions: Solriamfetol treatment was associated with decreases in body weight in a dose-related manner.(c) 2022 The Authors. In addition, it will collect low resolution spectroscopy in the optical range for ∼ 109 objects, stars, galaxies, and QSOs. Parameters of those objects are expected to be part of the final Catalog. Complete and up-to-date libraries of synthetic stellar spectra are needed to train the algorithms to classify this huge amount of data. • Brown dwarf atmospheres form molecules, then high temperature condensates (corundum, titanates, silicates, and iron compounds), and then low temperature condensates (ices) as they cool down over time. These produce large opacities which govern entirely their spectral energy distribution. Just as it is important to know molecular opacities (TiO, H2O, CH4, etc.) with accuracy, it is imperative to understand the interplay of processes (e.g. condensation, sedimentation, coagulation, convection) that determines the radial and size distribution of grains. Limiting case models have shown that young, hot brown (L) dwarfs form dust mostly in equilibrium, while at much cooler stages (late T dwarfs) all high temperature condensates have sedimented out of their photospheres. But this process is gradual and all intermediate classes of brown dwarfs can partly be understood in terms of partial sedimentation of dust. With new models accounting for these processes, we describe the effects they may have upon brown dwarf spectral properties.

    • Background/Aims: The goal of health research is to improve patients care and outcomes. Thus, it is essential that research addresses questions that are important to patients and clinicians. The aim of this study was to develop a list of priorities for glaucoma research involving stakeholders from different countries in Europe. Methods: We used a three-phase method, including a two-round electronic Delphi survey and a workshop. The clinician and patient electronic surveys were conducted in parallel and independently. For phase I, the survey was distributed to patients from 27 European countries in 6 different languages, and to European Glaucoma Society members, ophthalmologists with expertise in glaucoma care, asking to name up to five research priorities. During phase II, participants were asked to rank the questions identified in phase I using a Likert scale. Phase III was a 1 day workshop with patients and clinicians. The purpose was to make decisions about the 10 most important research priorities using the top 20 priorities identified by patients and clinicians. Results: In phase I, 308 patients and 150 clinicians were involved. In phase II, the highest-ranking priority for both patients and clinicians was € treatments to restore vision'. In phase III, eight patients and four clinicians were involved. The top three priorities were € treatments to stop sight loss', € treatments to restore vision' and € improved detection of worsening glaucoma'.Conclusion: We have developed a list of priorities for glaucoma research involving clinicians and patients from different European countries that will help guide research efforts and investment.

    • DNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (DNA FISH) is a powerful method to study chromosomal organization in single cells. At present, there is a lack of free resources of DNA FISH probes and probe design tools which can be readily applied. Here, we describe iFISH, an open-source repository currently comprising 380 DNA FISH probes targeting multiple loci on the human autosomes and chromosome X, as well as a genome-wide database of optimally designed oligonucleotides and a freely accessible web interface (http://ifish4u.org) that can be used to design DNA FISH probes. We individually validate 153 probes and take advantage of our probe repository to quantify the extent of intermingling between multiple heterologous chromosome pairs, showing a much higher extent of intermingling in human embryonic stem cells compared to fibroblasts. In conclusion, iFISH is a versatile and expandable resource, which can greatly facilitate the use of DNA FISH in research and diagnostics.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single-molecule DNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques enable studying the three-dimensional (3D) organization of the genome at the single cell level. However, there is a major unmet need for open access, high quality, curated and reproducible DNA FISH datasets. Here, we describe a dataset obtained by applying our recently developed iFISH method to simultaneously visualize 16 small (size range: 62–73 kilobases, kb) DNA loci evenly spaced on chromosome 2 in human cells, in a single round of hybridization. We show how combinatorial color coding can be used to precisely localize multiple loci in 3D within single cells, and how inter-locus distances scale inversely with chromosome contact frequencies determined by high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C). We provide raw images and 3D coordinates for nearly 10,000 FISH dots. Our dataset provides a free resource that can facilitate studies of 3D genome organization in single cells and can be used to develop automatic FISH analysis algorithms.

  • Arctic sustainability research : Past, present and future
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Arctic is one of the world’s regions most affected by cultural, socio-economic, environmental, and climatic changes. Over the last two decades, scholars, policymakers, extractive industries, governments, intergovernmental forums, and non-governmental organizations have turned their attention to the Arctic, its peoples, resources, and to the challenges and benefits of impending transformations. Arctic sustainability is an issue of increasing concern as well as the resilience and adaptation of Arctic societies to changing conditions. This book offers key insights into the history, current state of knowledge and the future of sustainability, and sustainable development research in the Arctic. Written by an international, interdisciplinary team of experts, it presents a comprehensive progress report on Arctic sustainability research. It identifies key knowledge gaps and provides salient recommendations for prioritizing research in the next decade. Arctic Sustainability Research will appeal to researchers, academics, and policymakers interested in sustainability science and the practices of sustainable development, as well as those working in polar studies, climate change, political geography, and the history of science.

  • Developing a Research Tool for Investigating Religious Knowledge as Part of Religious Literacy: The Questionnaire- First Results- Possibilities for International Comparisons
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Empirical Theology. - : Brill. - 0922-2936 .- 1570-9256. ; 35:2, s. 223-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article makes international debates on religious literacy as well as forms of assess-ment in RE related to these debates its starting point by identifying the lack of an empirical basis for the respective discussions. A questionnaire for 15-year-old pupils with a focus on religious knowledge, based on prior studies and tried out in Finland, Germany and Sweden is introduced. The results, although not representative, allow for comparative evaluation, comparing the results at country level and in reference to different kinds of religion-related knowledge. Possible influences of the different cur-ricula are identified by comparing different degrees of familiarity with certain topics or religions in relation to when the respective curriculum foresees them being treated. The article is meant to demonstrate that meaningful international research on reli-gious knowledge as part of religious literacy is possible, that its results could inform RE and show the possible value of developing such efforts further.

  • Current debates about (inter-)religious literacy and assessments of the outcomes of religious education: two approaches to religion-related knowledge in critical review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Beliefs & Values-Studies in Religion & Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1361-7672. ; 44:2, s. 254-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plain Language Summary This article focuses on two separate debates that have recently attracted interest in several countries around the world: the debate on religious and interreligious literacy and the debate on the assessment of the outcomes of Religious Education (RE). Although these debates have similar themes and are influenced by shared factors, they have rarely been considered together. From this standpoint, both debates are briefly reviewed and critically discussed in this article. The analysis is directed by two questions: What guiding educational ideas are connected to the new or renewed interest in religion-related knowledge, and which ideas form the shared motives that influence the two debates? What is the empirical basis of these debates? The results show that the educational basis of the two debates is currently underdeveloped, and their empirical foundations are rather weak. In addition, there is a need to strengthen religious and interreligious literacy in, for example, RE. The debates on both (inter-)religious literacy and the assessment of the RE outcomes should use clear educational guidelines and include solid empirical results that directly focus on religious literacy and the religion-related knowledge of young people. Moreover, both debates should be developed together to improve their theoretical understandings and empirical insights. This article addresses two current debates that have generated increasing interest in a number of countries but have rarely been considered together: the debate on religious and interreligious literacy and the debate on the assessment of the outcomes of Religious Education (RE). Against this background, both debates are reviewed and critically discussed in relation to the following questions: 1) What guiding educational ideas are connected to the new or renewed interest in religion-related knowledge, and which ideas form the shared motives that influence the two debates? 2) What is the empirical basis of these debates? The results indicate that the educational basis of the two debates is currently underdeveloped, and their empirical foundations are rather weak. In addition, there is a need to direct attention towards strengthening religious and interreligious literacy in, for example, RE. The debates on both (inter-)religious literacy and the assessment of the RE outcomes should be based on clear educational guidelines and informed by solid empirical results that directly address religious literacy and the religion-related knowledge of young people. Moreover, we conclude that the two debates should be developed together, as they both require enhanced theoretical understandings and empirical insights.

  • Elastic scattering of 96 MeV neutrons from iron, yttrium, and lead
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 77:2, s. 024605-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data on elastic scattering of 96 MeV neutrons from Fe-56, Y-89, and Pb-208 in the angular interval 10-70 degrees are reported. The previously published data on Pb-208 have been extended, as a new method has been developed to obtain more information from data, namely to increase the number of angular bins at the most forward angles. A study of the deviation of the zero-degree cross section from Wick's limit has been performed. It was shown that the data on Pb-208 are in agreement with Wick's limit while those on the lighter nuclei overshoot the limit significantly. The results are compared with modern optical model predictions, based on phenomenology and microscopic nuclear theory. The data on Fe-56, Y-89, and Pb-208 are in general in good agreement with the model predictions.
