  • Ars edendi Lecture Series : Volume 3
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Ars edendi Research Programme, funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and based at Stockholm University, explores both theoretical and practical issues of the editing of medieval Greek and Latin texts, especially in genres presenting quandaries to standard error-based, Lachmannian approaches. Since the start of the eight-year programme in 2008, the series of Ars edendi lectures has given experienced textual scholars the opportunity to share their perspectives on current developments in textual criticism or to address specific editorial challenges. This volume offers the reflections and experiences of two Latin and two Greek scholars as well as the perspectives of a researcher in library and information science concerning critical digitization. Mats Dahlström contrasts ‘mass digitization’ with ‘critical digitization’, and discusses the advantages of both, as well as touching on other fundamental issues involving library digitization and scholarly editing. Michael Winterbottom discusses how an editor may proceed when there is evidence of rewriting, which the classical scholar can only rarely determine has taken place, whereas the medieval scholar can sometimes get right back to the top of a tradition and ‘see the goal posts moving, and know or guess who was moving them.’ John M. Duffy offers illustrations of the commonsensical ways of retrieving and restoring the text in the case of Sophronius of Jerusalem, where the editor has the advantage of the author’s attachment to rhythmical prose. Tiziano Dorandi assesses the value of parallel Byzantine traditions from the perspective of an editor of Diogenes Laertius, and asserts that the editor must avoid falling into the trap of mixing traditions. Frank Coulson discusses the editorial problems peculiar to medieval commentaries and glosses on classical authors, concentrating on the commentaries to the Metamorphoses of Ovid.

  • The Scholia by Hesychius of Jerusalem on the Minor Prophets : Edited with an Introduction by Mats Eriksson
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation contains an edition of the scholia by Hesychius of Jerusalem (died probably after 451) on the Minor Prophets of the Old Testament (CPG 6558). Apart from a few fragments, this text has never been edited before. It consists of 2 160 mostly quite brief pieces of text interpreting various aspects of the bible text. The first chapter of the introduction contains a discussion of the biography of Hesychius. It is suggested that the various remarks of different scholars concerning Hesychius, his life and (to a varying extent) even his theological standpoint have often been based on a study of a minor portion of his writings. Scholars seem rarely to have evaluated the sources of the few biographical notices with respect to the entire context of the works in which these texts appear or the environments from which they come. This has given rise to inadequacies of interpretation and perspective. In the second chapter, the four different versions of the scholia are presented and examined. It is concluded that the version found in the so called Catena I is the most original and should form the basis of the critical edition. Some observations are made on the format and possible use of the scholia, both as an original work and as a part of a catena. In the third chapter, the manuscripts of three of the versions are presented and a stemma is established for the version in Catena I. In the appendixes are given, among other things, the scholia as found in Ambrosianus H 45 sup. and Catena II. A list of readings taken from other versions of the OT and appearing in the scholia of Hesychius is also provided.

  • Connecting the Case Studies : Editorial Methods and the Editorial Circle Model
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Arts of Editing Medieval Greek and Latin : a Casebook - a Casebook. - 0082-5328. - 9780888442031 ; 203, s. 400-429
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concluding study offers reflections and a synthetic analysis of all the studies in the casebook, presented from the perspective of a "first reader". The pattern of external factors, editorial challenges, methodologies and forms of presentation is discussed. It offers an interpretation of how the body of case studies manifest a wide spectrum of methodologies. The case studies are categorized through two suggested models, one expressed as a map of varieties of editions produced using different methods and approaches; the other as a hermeneutic editorial circle revolving around four interrelated factors every editor has to take into consideration. The map sets out to clarify the editorial task, while the editorial circle problematizes it by bringing into the equation experiential parameters often omitted in theoretical discussions.

  • Never the Twain Shall Meet? Latins and Greeks learning from each other in Byzantium
  • 2018
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This volume explores the theme of Latin and Greek mutual learning, intellectual and cultural interchange in the final age of Byzantium (1261-1453), challenging received conceptions of East and West as clearly delineated ideological categories. The reception of Thomas Aquinas and Western scholasticism receives emphasis, but also other forms of philosophical and theological frames of reference that have had lasting repercussions.

  • Greeks and Some Romans on the Pyramids
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The pyramids: between life and death. - Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. - 9789155491697 ; , s. 13-25
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is intended as a straightforward, light-hearted survey of passages in Greek literature dealing with the pyramids from Herodotus to late antiquity; it refers also to various passages in Latin imperial authors. The chief question is: Did the Greeks and Romans view the pyramids differently than we do today? It turns out that fascination for the size and construction of the pyramids is something common to all times, but less so their great antiquity. Scientific interest in the pyramids from mathematicians and engineers is not in evidence among Greek scientific authors, somewhat surprisingly. The pyramids also carried certain negative connotations for Greeks and Romans that are not common today, primarily, connotations of extravagant and useless opulence as well as of tyrannical oppression, though the latter lives on somewhat. The pyramids as a touted tourist attraction remain common to Greek antiquity and our contemporary culture.

  • A Rhetorical Declamation of Sophonias the Monk and Paraphrast
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Byzantinische Zeitschrift. - Berlin : De Gruyter. - 0007-7704 .- 1868-9027. ; 104:1, s. 147-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Codex Marcianus Graecus 266 contains a μελέτη written in the character of Paul before the Areopagus and attributed to the learned monk Sophonias. This previously unpublished text is valuable both as an example of Palaiologan rhetoric and as additional testimony to the elusive Sophonias, who, in our opinion, is the same as the Sophonias to whom paraphrases of Aristotelian works are ascribed. The declamation is particularly noteworthy for its Platonic allusions. We divide our article into the following parts: a brief description of the manuscript and of the text; a presentation of the evidence for Sophonias; a few concluding observations; some remarks on the edition, then the edition itself along with an English translation which we hope will be of use to other scholars.

  • Aristotle in the Greek gnomological tradition
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation consists of a new collection of maxims and apophthegms associatedwith Aristotle in the Greek gnomologies along with an introduction to the sources and acommentary on the content of the sayings. The major sources have been DiogenesLaertius, the anthology of Stobaeus, Gnomologium Vaticanum and related collections, cod. Par. gr. 1168 (Corpus Parisinum) and cod. Bodl. Digby 6, the Loci Communes ofps.-Maximus the Confessor and related anthologies, the Florilegium Atheniense, and thegnomology of Joannes Georgides. The introductory chapters concern the definition andhistory of the gnomological tradition, the investigation of the extant sources, the problemof multiple attributions, possible explanations for the title The Chreiae of Aristotle foundin Stobaeus, and the different ways Aristotle makes his appearance in the tradition. Thecollection of sayings is based on Greek sources alone, but frequent references are made tothe Latin and Arabic traditions, and Appendices I and IV offer a sampling of the material to be found in these traditions. Appendix VI shows the sources of the so-calledGnomologium Parisinum Ineditum. The commentary dwells primarily on the attributionto Aristotle and the possible Aristotelian content of the sayings while at the same timerelating the sayings to the gnomological tradition as a whole.

  • En kort introduktion till Heliga Birgittas Uppenbarelser
  • 2022

  • Ingår i: Encyclopedia of Medieval Philosophy. - Dordrecht : Springer. - 9789402416633 - 9789402416657 ; , s. 1791-1795
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sophonias is the author of paraphrases of Aristotelian works, most probably active in the latter half of the thirteenth century (see Hunger I:25–26, 37 nn. 139–140, II:267–268; PLP 11 p. 49 no. 26424; Praechter in RE 15,2, col. 1099; Searby In: Goulet R (ed) Dictionnaire des philosophes antiques, VI. Paris, pp 473–477, 2016). He is almost certainly to be identified with Sophonias, the monk from the same period, who lived in Constantinople and spent time in Thessaloniki, concerning whom reliable historical data exists.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Mnemosyne (Lugduni Batavorum. Print). - : Brill. - 0026-7074 .- 1568-525X. ; 72:2, s. 197-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Hellenistic and early Imperial evidence of χρεία (chreia) in the sense of anecdote is summarized with the aim of completeness. The special rhetorical sense of this common Greek word is discussed, and a new explanation of the semantic derivation is offered: it is suggested that the sense of anecdote derives from the earlier sense of dealings rather than utility. The proposal that Metrocles or the Cynics invented the micro-genre of chreiai is strongly criticized. It is to the Socratics more generally we should look for its origins, if the genre must be supposed to have originated among philosophers, which is not certain.

  • 2020

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early usage of the noun ἀπόφθεγμα and the corresponding verb are examined and discussed. The verb is consistently used to underline an authoritative speech act, calling attention to a particular individual’s dramatic statement. The noun “apophthegm” denote’s someone’s pointed utterance, often, but not necessarily, in response to a question. Overlappings of apophthegm with gnōmē, apomnēmoneuma, paroimia and chreia are also discussed. Apophthegms labeled as such in Xenophon, Aristotle, Plutarch, Diogenes Laertius, Stobaeus and other sources, are shown to be practically indistinguishable from chreia. Evidence for early collections of pagan apophthegms is summarized: apophthegmata occurs as a title for collections or as a header introducing lists of sayings in biographies from Hellenistic to medieval times. The collecting of anecdotes and apophthegms of famous people was related to growing biographical interests in character studies as well as a reflection of an increasingly literate society, or at least of the literary habits of an educated elite with cosmopolitan tastes. Pagan Greek apophthegms attributed to Greek celebrities, usually making a moral point, sometimes only a witty one, were ubiquitous in Greek and Roman society by the time the Christians got around to compiling their own collections of the apophthegms of the desert Fathers.

  • Ingår i: Symbolae Osloenses. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0039-7679 .- 1502-7805. ; 83:1, s. 120-147

    • Apart from Lucian's Demonax, our only other sources on Demonax the philosopher are the Greek gnomologia. These were exploited by K. Funk in his major study of 1907, but Funk was ill informed abou the nature of the gnomological sources. The present article gives a concise overview of modern scholarship regarding Lucian's Demonax and the debate on Demonax's historical existence. It then presents the gnomological sources and provides a new and improved edition of the Greek gnomological material along with an English translation.
