  • Food-branding places – A sensory perspective
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Place Branding and Public Diplomacy. - : Palgrave Macmillan. - 1751-8059 .- 1751-8040. ; 10:4, s. 289-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article takes as its starting point the observation that food, meals and gastronomy are frequently used in the branding of places. The knowledge of how and why this takes place is, however, rather limited, and the aim of this article is thus to identify and describe the role of food, meals and gastronomy in the direct and indirect branding of places. The article contains three main sections, where the first is a clarification of key concepts and the methodology applied. The second part is an account of the ways in which food is used in branding places, based on the observations we have made as part of a multisite field study of large metropolitan cities. The third part of the article is a tentative and illustrated conceptual framework, based on the assumption that places can be seen as sensescapes. Food, meals and gastronomy contribute to the spatial configuration (sensory topography), time-space flow (orchestration) and iconography (sensory mapping) of these place-sensescapes. The conclusion of the article is that the character of a place does not only affect the experience of food and gastronomy in that place, but also that food and gastronomy is – directly and indirectly – affecting the character of the place and its brand-image.

  • Gendered References in Organization Studies
  • 2017
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This text starts with counts of men and women authors quoted in some early and late works of organization theory. An analysis of works of classical authors, and of our own works, reveals that over the years the proportion of references to women’s work has increased, although it is still far from half of the references. The text invites to a discussion about why women authors are systematically underrecognized, and initiates by listing some reasons for why full names in references instead of initials might enhance the proper recognition of research conducted by women.

  • The Thin End of the Wedge.Foreign Women Professors as Double Strangers in Academia
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The impetus for this study was an observation that many of the women who obtained the first chairs at European universities were foreigners. Our initial attempt to provide a statistical picture proved impossible, because there were numerous problems deciding the contents of such concepts as "first", "university professor", and "foreigner". We have therefore focused on four life stories. It turns out that being a "double stranger"´, a woman in a masculine profession and a foreigner is not, as one might think, a cumulative disadvantage. Rather, it seems that these two types of strangeness might cancel one another, permitting these women a greater degree of success than was allowed their "native" sisters. This situation was far from providing psychological comfort, however. Thus the metaphor of the wedge: opening the doors but suffering from double pressure.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Global Ideas: How Ideas, objects and Practices Travel in the Global Economy. - 9147077190 ; , s. 47-70
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • New institutional theory has been critizised, for describing institutionalization as a static qualitative state rather than a process. In this paper we provide an extended understanding of the process of institutionalization by replacing the mechanical concept of diffusion by the concept of translation and an analytical model of "trevel of ideas". Analyzing the field material from three cases of translation of ides in Swedish health care sector we have traced not only various homogenizing but also heterogenizing processes which reproduce organizational ideas, models, and practices. In the paper we suggest and discuss how name, form, and practice can be seen as different expressions of an idea through which organizations can be homogenized or heteroginized in an institutional process.

  • Karriärvägar och karriärmönster bland disputerade läkare och medicinare
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Career paths in academic medicineBackground: women physicians were underrepresented in senior academic positions at medical faculties in Sweden during the last century.Aim: the aim of this thesis is to map gender equality in the postdoctoral careers of physicians. Methods: a triangulation of methods was obtained by performing three studies based on quantitative and qualitative data, namely descriptive statistics regarding the academic positions of graduates from all medical departments in Sweden, as well as a life history questionnaire, and in-depth interviews with 38 selected respondents. Results: in three consecutive cohorts, there were no gender differences in the academic positions in relation to the number of female and male graduates. These results applied to all medical departments in Sweden, with the exception of female physicians, who had graduated from pre-clinical departments at the Karolinska Institute. These results were also found in the second study. Male physicians more often, and at a younger age, held positions as Senior Physicians at university hospitals. Women physicians had two careers, one as a scientist and the other as a physician, whilst some men dropped out from medical training and concentrated on a career in pre-clinical research. In the third study, it was found that, when collaboration with a former supervisor continued after graduation, males were viewed as equal partners, whereas females were viewed as dependent and in need of support. The in-depth interviews also indicated that female physicians tried to adapt to a traditional scientific organisation created by men, for men, which was reflected in the interviews with both the female and male respondents. Conclusions: in Sweden, there is no 'leaky pipeline' in academic medicine after graduation. Gender equality is reached, but women conform to existing male norms, and in the future, there is a risk that this competent group of women will become stressed and burnt out.

  • Global ideas. How Ideas, Objects and Practices Travel in the Global Economy
  • 2005
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Global ideas is an attempt to explain how it is possible that, although the same idea travels around the globe at a high speed, local realities are still very diffirent. While this book can be seen as joining the discussion on globalization and its paradoxical character, it is unique in its rich collection of cases and its frame of reference consisting of a combination of organization theory, new institutionalism and sociology of translation. The focus is not so much on organizations but on organizing, which is global both in its scope and in its imitation of global models. This book shows what is travelling and how; it moves between countries and disciplines.

  • Titt-skåp för alla : en berättelse om hur Stockholm blev kulturhuvudstad
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How does a city become a Cultural Capital? This was the main question asked in the field study that is the basis of the present thesis. The study consisted in observing, at close range, the process of organizing the big event, but also to some extent the Cultural Capital Year itself (in the thesis reported as a photo-linguistic montage). A temporary organization called Stockholm - Cultural Capital of Europe 1998, was created to actualize a project with the same name. This temporary organization first organized itself, and then it organized an action net necessary for the big event. These two organizing processes were guided by different principles. The logic of appropriateness was the principle behind the temporary organization's way of organizing itself, while the logic of imagination directed the organizing of the Cultural Capital. In their efforts, the organizers let themselves be guided by various models, including those of earlier Cultural Capitals who left traces of their own organizing processes. The Stockholm '98 temporary organization had similar ambitions - to leave a trace lasting longer than the Cultural Year itself. To the City of Stockholm they left a database used during 1998 to inform citizens and tourists about cultural activities taking place in the city. The work of creating such a database revealed the importance of stability within an action net, stability largely achieved by the use of artifacts, in this case computers and software. The study also showed the role that artifacts play in forming a unit of power. As temporary organizations do not live long, it is difficult to speak about an "organization field", as is usual in the case of more long-lived organizations. As it turned out, however, temporary organizations form a time-field. In such a field, time is what both connects and divides the units present in the field. A time-field becomes structured as a result of both isomorphic and heteromorphic tendencies. The isomorphic structuring takes place mainly through a mimetic process in which earlier organizations and events serve as models for attractive features. The heteromorphic structuring is the result of a search for distinctiveness, an attempt to become, but also remain, unique.

  • Kapitulationens estetik : organisering och ledarskap i filmprojekt
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To make a film is indeed a risky business. It concerns artistic expression, organizing processes and not least economics. It is part of the film director’s role to manage the uncertainty with all what it implies in a film project. However, is it possible to regulate an art creating process? In the normative project management literature one proceeds from the dream that a project is realised from an explicitly planned goal, achieved with means allocated in advance and within the afforded time. Concerning the leader role, it is "the superman" that is desired. My starting point in the study concerned the doubts about the narratives of leaders as charismatic heroes, in which the leader is assumed to be in full control of the course of events. Drawing on the social constructionist tradition, this thesis focuses on the relational aesthetic perspective in organizational theorizing. Organizing and leadership can be viewed as mutually constructing each other in human interactions in an ongoing process. In this process the role of aesthetic understanding is emphasized. Organizations can be viewed not only as cognitive creations but also as having their origins in the knowledge creating faculties of all senses of organizational actors and scholars. A theory of temporary organizations has been used as a structuring frame in an effort to understand the organizational dynamics during the art creating process in a film project. The object of the study is to contribute to our understanding how organizing and leadership are constructed in the everyday professional activity of filmmaking. An ethnographic study with participant observation was carried out during a part of the shooting phase of a film project. In addition, several persons working in film production with varying tasks were interviewed. The empirical material is presented as three cases. In all of these cases there are several persons involved in the storytelling on everyday filmmaking practises. The contribution of the study is threefold: first, like writings in ethnography when going to the field, a reading of a "foreign culture" in a film project, from the point of view of business administration and organization theory. Second, the relational aesthetic perspective to viewing organizing and leadership has been applied. Third, the distinctive features of the artistic work for its management are recognized. In Swedish film production it is the director who has the legitimate power to decide the final film text. In everyday filmmaking practises leadership is largely constructed as a hierarchical process. The director makes hundreds of decisions in his or her daily work. Yet, filmmaking is also the product of the work of several people. Although often well planned, the art creating process in a film project can be quite disorderly. Considerable improvisation (in the meaning an openness for the emerging opportunities) is needed, both in front of the camera and "behind the camera." In this process communication is based on aesthetic knowledge, which is needed from the whole team. Such communication functions best in a trustful atmosphere. When the director takes the decisions that he or she has been listening to, taking in with several senses what’s going on in the team in order to be able to make a judgement. When improvising, the judgements are based on both rational decisions and on tacit knowledge, emotions and aesthetic knowledge that are acquired through bodily senses. As a leadership strategy, except hierarchy and networking, it is also vital for the director to be able to refrain from intervening, i.e. he or she has to be open to aesthetics of capitulation.

  • Engagemang och styrning : Om relationen individ-organisation i preklinisk läkemedelsutveckling
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This doctoral dissertation deals with organizational commitment and control in preclinical pharmaceutical development. The study is based on interviews with 47 individuals. The purpose of the dissertation is to problemize and analyze the control of highly uncertain, knowledgeintensive, and complex development processes, as related to individuals' organizational commitment. One contribution of the study is its rather extensive study on the concept of organizational commitment, its content, foundations, and focus. The manifestations of commitment are discussed within the framework of the umbrella concept organizational citizenship behavior. The key conclusions on organizational commitment are those that shed light on individuals who are intensely focused on research. Their strong relationship to the content of their work and their deep commitment to their research tasks and to the groups they associate with their research work is crucial. The importance of the intellectual components, the intrinsic stimulation, the feelings, and the self-satisfaction are stressed.Control is discussed using the distinction between the cooperation and the coordination problems The high level of uncertainty and the significant difficulties involved in creating rules and regulations, assessing performance and activities contradict the use of bureaucratic control forms to bring about cooperation. Despite the difficulties, the problem of opportunism appears to be small and there seems to be a widespread orientation toward cooperation. It is also difficult to explain this orientation on the basis of the equity-based clan or the social-integrative clan. The author' s proposal of explaining the inclination toward cooperation with the symbiotic clan. The symbiotic clan is based on the individual's possibilities to realize himself and his values in a scientific environment that is perceived as favorable. The symbiotic clan can also contribute to an explanation of the coordination problem. Further, it is stressed that knowledge is developed in the project in learning cycles, in which the alternation between deep involvement and reflective moments tends to follow a rhythm characteristic of the project. lnstead of triggering this alternation by specific events or a strict deadline, as in eventbased or time-based pacing we are faced with knowledge-based pacing.
