  • Estimating global injuries morbidity and mortality: methods and data used in the Global Burden of Disease 2017 study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Injury prevention : journal of the International Society for Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention. - : BMJ. - 1475-5785. ; 26:SUPP_1Supp 1, s. 125-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria.MethodsIn this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality for every cause of injury, and then estimating incidence for every cause of injury. Non-fatal disability for each cause is then calculated based on the probabilities of suffering from different types of bodily injury experienced.ResultsGBD 2017 produced morbidity and mortality estimates for 38 causes of injury. Estimates were produced in terms of incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability, cause-specific mortality, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life-years for a 28-year period for 22 age groups, 195 countries and both sexes.ConclusionsGBD 2017 demonstrated a complex and sophisticated series of analytical steps using the largest known database of morbidity and mortality data on injuries. GBD 2017 results should be used to help inform injury prevention policy making and resource allocation. We also identify important avenues for improving injury burden estimation in the future.

  • Global injury morbidity and mortality from 1990 to 2017: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Injury prevention : journal of the International Society for Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention. - : BMJ. - 1475-5785. ; 26:SUPP_1Supp 1, s. 96-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries.MethodsWe reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).FindingsIn 1990, there were 4 260 493 (4 085 700 to 4 396 138) injury deaths, which increased to 4 484 722 (4 332 010 to 4 585 554) deaths in 2017, while age-standardised mortality decreased from 1079 (1073 to 1086) to 738 (730 to 745) per 100 000. In 1990, there were 354 064 302 (95% uncertainty interval: 338 174 876 to 371 610 802) new cases of injury globally, which increased to 520 710 288 (493 430 247 to 547 988 635) new cases in 2017. During this time, age-standardised incidence decreased non-significantly from 6824 (6534 to 7147) to 6763 (6412 to 7118) per 100 000. Between 1990 and 2017, age-standardised DALYs decreased from 4947 (4655 to 5233) per 100 000 to 3267 (3058 to 3505).InterpretationInjuries are an important cause of health loss globally, though mortality has declined between 1990 and 2017. Future research in injury burden should focus on prevention in high-burden populations, improving data collection and ensuring access to medical care.

  • Using Endogenous MicroRNA Expression Patterns to Visualize Neural Differentiation of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Human Embryonic and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells : Part of the series Springer Protocols Handbooks - Part of the series Springer Protocols Handbooks. - 9781617792663 - 9781617792670 ; , s. 465-480
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many existing protocols for neuronal differentiation of human pluripotent cells result in heterogeneous cell populations and unsynchronized differentiation, necessitating the development of methods for labeling specific cell populations. Here we describe how microRNA-regulated lentiviral vectors can be used to visualize specific cell populations by exploiting endogenous microRNA expression patterns. This strategy provides a useful tool for visualization and identification of neural progeny derived from human pluripotent stem cells. We provide detailed protocols for lentiviral transduction, neural differentiation, and subsequent analysis of human embryonic stem cells.

  • A Type of Virtual Force based Energy-hole Mitigation Strategy for Sensor Networks
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Sensors Journal. - New York : IEEE. - 1530-437X .- 1558-1748. ; 20:2, s. 1105-1119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the era of Big Data and Mobile Internet, how to ensure the terminal devices (e.g., sensor nodes) work steadily for a long time is one of the key issues to improve the efficiency of the whole network. However, a lot of facts have shown that the unattended equipments are prone to failure due to energy exhaustion, physical damage and other reasons. This may result in the emergence of energy-hole, seriously affecting network performance and shortening its lifetime. To reduce data redundancy and avoid the generation of sensing blind areas, a type of Virtual Force based Energy-hole Mitigation strategy (VFEM) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the virtual force (gravitation and repulsion) between nodes is introduced that makes nodes distribute as uniformly as possible. Secondly, in order to alleviate the "energy-hole problem", the network is divided into several annuluses with the same width. Then, another type of virtual force, named "virtual gravity generated by annulus", is proposed to further optimize the positions of nodes in each annulus. Finally, with the help of the "data forwarding area", the optimal paths for data uploading can be selected out, which effectively balances energy consumption of nodes. Experiment results show that, VFEM has a relatively good performance on postponing the generation time of energy-holes as well as prolonging the network lifetime compared with other typical energy-hole mitigation methods.

  • Holocene climate change in southern Oman deciphered by speleothem records and climate model simulations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Qunf Cave oxygen isotope (& delta;O-18(c)) record from southern Oman is one of the most significant of few Holocene Indian summer monsoon cave records. However, the interpretation of the Qunf & delta;O-18(c) remains in dispute. Here we provide a multi-proxy record from Qunf Cave and climate model simulations to reconstruct the Holocene local and regional hydroclimate changes. The results indicate that besides the Indian summer monsoon, the North African summer monsoon also contributes water vapor to southern Oman during the early to middle Holocene. In principle, Qunf & delta;O-18(c) values reflect integrated oxygen-isotope fractionations over a broad moisture transport swath from moisture sources to the cave site, rather than local precipitation amount alone, and thus the Qunf & delta;O-18(c) record characterizes primary changes in the Afro-Asian monsoon regime across the Holocene. In contrast, local climate proxies appear to suggest an overall slightly increased or unchanged wetness over the Holocene at the cave site. Southern Oman speleothem oxygen isotope and multi-proxy data reveal diverse changes in the Afro-Indian summer monsoon circulations and local hydroclimate conditions during the Holocene, confirming climate model simulations.

  • Coumarin derivative trigger controlled photo-healing of ion gels and photo-controlled reversible adhesiveness
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Polymer Journal. - : Elsevier. - 0014-3057 .- 1873-1945. ; 144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fabrication strategies for photo-responsive ion gels have attracted attention owing to their precise spatial and temporal control with predetermined responses to light stimuli. In this work, a reversible light-driven method was introduced to devise photo-responsive ion gels by harnessing coumarin-based building blocks under 365 nm irradiation. A series of random copolymers composed of N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and 7-(2′-methacryloyloxyethoxy)–4-methylcoumarin (MAOEMC), namely P(DMA-r-MAOEMC), were synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with sufficient molecular weight (≈100 kDa). The coumarin moieties in those polymers exhibited a reversible photo-induced dimerization and photocleavage behavior in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsufonyl) imide ([C2mim][NTf2]). Those polymers - ionic liquid system at high polymer concentration (20 wt%) under suitable wavelength UV light irradiation led to sol–gel transition, which could be functionalized as photo-healable material and photo-controlled adhesion agents. Notably, the photo-controlled adhesiveness was reversible and can be mediated from 1.2 MPa to 0.2 MPa. This work opens new avenues to develop multifunctional ion gels using dynamic covalent bonds.

  • Photo-healable ion gel with high mechanical property, fatigue resistance and shear resistance using a coumarin group containing diblock copolymer in an ionic liquid
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Polymer Journal. - : Elsevier. - 0014-3057 .- 1873-1945. ; 165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ion gels, polymer networks swollen with ionic liquid (IL), are ideal materials for application in flexible electronic devices. It remains a challenge to fabricate an ion gel with photo-healing, high mechanical properties, fatigue resistance and shear resistance. Herein, a well-defined diblock copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(methyl acrylate-r-7-(2′-methacryloyloyloxyethoxy)-4-methylcoumarin) (PS-b-P(DMA-r-MAOEMC), brief name: SMM, PS: IL-phobic segment and P(DMA-r-MAOEMC): IL-philic segment) was synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. For comparison, a random copolymer P(DMA-r-MAOEMC) (MM) also be prepared. In dilute solution, the SMM can form spherical micelles with PS-core surrounded by P(DMA-r-MAOEMC) corona chains in an IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane sulfone)amide ([C2mim][NTf2]). In a suitable polymer concentration, the SMM and MM can form ion gels in [C2mim][NTf2] under 365 nm UV light irradiation through photo-dimerization of coumarin groups in corona MM polymer chains of spherical micelles and photo-dimerization of coumarin groups in MM random polymer chains, respectively. Compared with the MM ion gel, the SMM ion gel has high mechanical properties, shear resistance and relatively high fatigue resistance. Under 254 nm UV light irradiation, photo-induced gel to jammed micelles transition for the SMM ion gel and photo-induced gel to sol transition for the MM ion gel occur due to photo-cleavage of dimer in polymer chains. Photo-induced jammed micelles - gel transition for the SMM ion gel and photo-induced sol - gel transition for the MM ion gel are reversible by alternating 365 nm and 254 nm UV light irradiation, whereby photo-healable materials can be fabricated. Compared to the MM ion gel, the SMM ion gel has high photo-healing efficiency. The electrochemical property of the SMM ion gel can be recovered completely after photo-healing.
