  • Permutational Grammar for free word order languages
  • 2001
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Permutational Grammar, PG, is a grammar inspired by the Free Word Order grammar, FOG, presented in Vladimir Pericliev & Alexander Grigorov 1992. Some languages, notably Latin, are said to have free word order, see e.g. Siewierska 1988. The name Permutational Grammar is derived from the use of permutations in order to generate order variation. The general problem to be solved by FOG and PG is the generation and analysis of a great number of word order variants with (roughly) the same meaning. PG accomplishes this by specifying some basic phrase structure orders with their functional (and semantic) representations, and then permuting the corresponding sequences of constituents to obtain all the other sequences with the same meaning. Permutational Grammar can be regarded as a generative phrase structure grammar with transformations represented by permutations. It is developed from SWETRA grammar (see Sigurd 1994). The constituent parsing trees are not represented explicitly. PG is written with generative rewrite rules and implemented in Prolog via the Definite Clause Grammar (DCG) formalism. The Prolog implementation used here is LPAProlog. The rules state that permutations of the constituents to the right of the rewrite symbol have the functional representation given as an argument to the left of the rewrite symbol. These rewrite rules can be compiled into rules that generate all possible permutations of the basic word order ‘on the fly’. It is possible to apply constraints to the permutations generated. One may, for example, introduce an order constraint like imbefore(C1,C2,M), which states that a constituent matching the description C1 must occur immediately before another constituent matching C2 in the list of constituents M. Another example is last(C,M), which states that a C must occur last in the list M

  • Acute effects of low and high intravenous doses of furosemide on myocardial function in anuric haemodialysis patients : a tissue Doppler study
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0931-0509 .- 1460-2385. ; 23:4, s. 1355-1361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. In patients with pulmonary oedema and preserved renal function, furosemide has not only a renal, but also a vascular effect, causing a rapid fall in left ventricular filling pressure accompanied by an increase in venous compliance. Previous studies have shown conflicting findings regarding the vascular effects of furosemide in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The objective of our study was to investigate whether furosemide induces changes in central cardiac haemodynamics in anuric ESRD patients, using conventional echocardiography and colour tissue Doppler velocity imaging (TVI), a new quantitative and sensitive method. Methods. Repeated low doses (40 mg followed by an additional dose of 40 mg after 30 min) of i.v. furosemide were administered to 12 (61.6 +/- 16 years, 7 men) and a high dose (250 mg) of i.v. furosemide to 6 (64.1 +/- 3.6 years, 5 men) clinically stable anuric haemodialysis (HD) patients. Conventional two-dimensional echocardiography and colour TVI images were recorded immediately before (0 min) the furosemide infusion in both groups, and in the group receiving the repeated low-dose infusion (at 0 and 30 min), 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 70 min after the administration of the first infusion. In the group receiving the single high dose of furosemide the ultrasound investigation was repeated 10, 20, 30 and 40 min after the infusion. The myocardial tissue velocities (v; cm/s) for isovolumetric contraction (IVC), peak systole (PS), early (E') and late (A') myocardial diastolic filling velocities were measured in the left ventricle (LV) at six sites (infero-septal, antero-lateral, inferior, anterior, infero-lateral and antero-septal walls) at the basal region. IVC time (IVCT), IV relaxation time (IVRT), PS time (PSt), RR interval, mitral annulus motion (MAM), strain rate (SR), left ventricular filling pressure (E/E') and cardiac output were also measured. The average of the different walls was used to evaluate global function. Right ventricle (RV) dynamics was evaluated from measurements of IVC velocity (IVCv), peak systolic velocity (PSv), E' and A' from the RV free wall. Results. No significant changes in cardiac output, IVCv, PSv, SR, MAM, E', A', E'/A', IVRT and LV filling pressure were observed, indicating that neither 40 mg (plus additional 40 mg after 30 min) nor 250 mg of furosemide had any measurable effects on LV filling pressure and LV and RV systolic and diastolic function. Conclusions. In anuric HD patients, low and high doses of furosemide had no significant effects on central cardiac haemodynamics. Therefore, the use of furosemide infusion in anuric ESRD patients with acute pulmonary oedema is not supported by the results of this study.

  • An outline of a Basque computerized grammar
  • 2001
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Basque is spoken by approximately 660,000 people (Trask 1997) in the Basque Country, straddling the border between northern Spain and southern France, particularly in rural areas of the Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa coastline, as well as inland Gipuzkoa and the foothills of the Pyrenees in Navarre. Virtually all Basque speakers are bilingual with either Spanish or French. Nevertheless, Basque is, due to its official status in the Basque autonomous region in northern Spain, no longer as seriously endangered as previously. Basque has several dialects which differ greatly from one another. The present paper deals with the standard version, which is, together with Spanish, the official language of the Basque autonomous region. This variety is commonly termed euskara batua (lit. ‘Unified Basque’). The genetic origin of Basque is unknown. Its only known relative is Aquitanian, which was spoken in a large area of south-western Gaul during the time of the Roman occupation (Trask 1997), and of which fragmentary inscriptions have survived. Other than that, no genetic relationship between Basque and any other language has been proven. Typologically, Basque shares certain features with Caucasian languages in particular, but these common features are not necessarily evidence of genetic relationship. Basque is a morphologically ergative language with accusative syntax. Morphological ergativity implies that the subject of a transitive verb is realized in ergative case, as opposed to the object of a transitive verb and the subject of an intransitive verb, which are realized in absolutive. Syntactic accusativity implies that the ergative noun phrase behaves like a clause subject according to standard diagnostic tests such as control, clausal coreference and reflexive binding (cf. Ortiz de Urbina 1989, Holmer 1999). Neutral word order is SOV, but other orders are also common. It has postpositions (both suffixal and free), and G-N word order within the noun phrase. A relative clause precedes its head. However, unusually for an SOV language, it has N-Adj word order within the noun phrase. Basque has triple verb agreement (subject, object and indirect object; indirect object agreement is optional in northern dialects of Basque). The (relatively) free word order and the complex inflectional system offer interesting challenges to grammatical models. This paper presents a computerized formal grammar of Basque and shows how the free word order and the complicated agreement can be handled by a computerized formal grammar called Permutational Grammar (PG; cf Eeg-Olofsson & Sigurd2001). This grammar is a variant of SWETRA (Referent) Grammar which has been presented in various publications, notably Sigurd (ed.), Computational grammars for analysis and machine translation (1994). We will present the characteristics of Permutational Grammar at the same time as the different Basque grammatical patterns are outlined. Some basic morphological rules are also presented, but only a few lexical items. The Permutational Grammar of Basque can be used in automatic translation given equivalent grammars. A Basque-Chinese translation example will also be demonstrated.

  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum. - : Trans Tech Publications. - 0255-5476 .- 1662-9752. ; 897, s. 299-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sublimation-grown 3C-SiC crystals were implanted with B ions at elevated temperature (400 °C) using multiple energies (100 to 575 keV) with a total dose of 1.3×1017 atoms/cm2 in order to form intermediate band (IB) in 3C-SiC. The samples were then annealed at 1400 °C for 60 min. An anomalous area in the center was observed in the PL emission pattern. The SIMS analysis indicated that the B concentration was the same both within and outside the anomalous area. The buried boron box-like concentration profile can reach ~3×1021 cm-3 in the plateau region. In the anomalous area a broad emission band (possible IB) emerges at around ~1.7-1.8 eV, which may be associated with B-precipitates having a sufficiently high density.

  • A New Analysis for Machine Translation of Auxiliaries and Main verb Complexes
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Studia Linguistica. - : Wiley. - 1467-9582 .- 0039-3193. ; 46:1, s. 30-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The analysis of the verb phrase poses interesting problems. This paper suggests a binary solution where the auxiliary is treated as one constituent and the main verb complex as another. Auxiliaries are thus not treated as main verbs as was suggested by Ross 1967 (and followed in the first version of Referent Grammar, Sigurd 1987). The auxiliary may be lacking (latent, empty), in which case the main verb carries the tense (finite) marker, or the auxiliary may be present, in which case the auxiliary carries the tense marker, while the main verb complex must be nonfinite. In the main verb complex, the main verb may be preceded by almost any number of nonfinite auxiliaries, and it is this possibility which creates theoretically interesting chains of nonfinite verb forms such as Swedish Eva måste ha velat kunna våga (att) hoppa (Eva must have wanted to be able to dare (to) jump). A basic idea of this paper is that the nonfinite auxiliary verb forms can be added as prefixes (or as in G man suffixes) by a kind of morphological rule.

  • 1988
  • Ingår i: Acta Linguistica Hafniensia. International Journal of Structural Linguistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1949-0763. ; 21:2, s. 95-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relative clauses have traditionally been said to have an antecedent or a correlate corresponding to a coreferent, missing, and relativized constituent in the relative clause (some representative works on relative clauses are mentioned in the list of references). Referent grammar (Sigurd, 1987) assumes referent variables in the syntactic representations of noun phrases and it is natural to assume that it is a referent variable, which is the antecedent or the correlate, not an individual word or individual words. The advantages of this analysis will be shown in this paper. The paper includes a survey of the main types of relative clauses with some typological comments. Swedish and English will be used as the main languages of demonstration. As Referent Grammar (RG) is formalized in Definite Clause Grammar (DCG), a formalism supported by many Prolog programs, the analysis can be implemented directly and run on a computer. The analysis presented in this paper is part of a computer program used for automatic translation by SWETRA (Swedish Computer Translation Research Center at the Department of Linguistics and Phonetics, Lund University, SWEDEN).

  • Analysis of Particle Verbs for Automatic Translation
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Linguistics. - 1502-4717. ; 18:1, s. 55-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A number of typical particle verbs in Swedish and English are presented and it is noted that such verbs are often forgotten in dictionaries and not given the proper treatment in grammars. One problem is the identification of these verbs, another is the fact that the verb and the particle may be separated by other words. The particle verbs must therefore be treated as discontinuous lexical items. It is shown that the phrase structure rules used in Swetra Referent Grammar can make room for lexical material at several places in the word string, if this is required by the lexical matrix. English and Swedish examples are presented and also the automatic translation of some simple sentences

    • The Commentator is a small-scale computer implementation of a model oftext production. The system simulates human behavior from the perceptionof events on a screen to the utterances. It is designed to allow anyone havingsome knowledge of Basic and access to a microcomputer to study the semantics of words (e.g. localization and movement predicates such asapproach, left/right, near, in front of, turn, overtake), pronouns, and sentence connectives such as however, also. The system also allows experimentation with different text strategies and systems of speech production. The system has practical applications in automatic commentators, talking robots, and similar systems often referred to in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper pinpoints some of the problems faced when a computer text production model (COMMENTATOR) is to produce spontaneous speech, in particular the problem of chunking the utterances in order to get natural prosodic units. The paper proposes a buffer model which allows the accumulation and delay of phonetic material until a chunk of the desired size has been built up. Several phonetic studies have suggested a similar temporary storage in order to explain intonation slopes, rythmical patterns, speech errors and speech disorders. Small-scale simulations of the whole verbalization process from perception and thought to sounds, hesitation behaviour, pausing, speech errors, sound changes and speech disorders are presented.
