  • Introducing a new design of digital tool to increase vibration risk assessments : challenges with education-based interventions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1080-3548 .- 2376-9130. ; 28:3, s. 1705-1710
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether introducing a digital risk assessment tool, the Swedish National Vibration Database, would increase the number of risk assessments on hand–arm and whole-body vibration. Employer and safety representatives from companies where vibration exposure is common were invited. Methods: Of the 2953 invited companies, 1916 were selected for educational intervention and the remaining 1037 companies served as a control group with no intervention. For the educational intervention, participating companies were further divided into two groups (group A, n = 26; group B, n = 47) that both received information regarding risk assessment, but group B was also informed about the digital tool. Both groups answered a questionnaire on risk assessment before the intervention and at the follow-up, 6 months later; the control group received the same questionnaire but no education (group C, n = 22).Results: Of the invited companies, only 2% chose to participate and 7% at follow-up. Seventy-eight percent of the participants had made some kind of risk assessment of vibration at follow-up.Conclusion: Due to the low participation rate among invited companies, this study is not able to draw any conclusions on whether the digital tool can be used to increase the number of risk assessments.

  • Child group constitution and its relation to noise in preschools
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: INTER-NOISE-2015.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During recent years in Sweden the number of complaints regarding hearing related disorders from employees working in the preschool (kindergarten) has increased. It is often assumed that the size of the child group is the crucial factor associated with the high noise levels. However, the association between the noise levels and the size of the child group is not fully understood. Further, it is likely that the gender balance and the age of the children have an effect on the noise levels in the preschools. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between noise in the preschool and the constitution of the child group in terms of number of children, gender balance and the children’s age. Noise levels were recorded at 34 preschool sites in Sweden using stationary sound level meters with an external microphone mounted in the ceiling in the dining room and the play halls at each site. Sound level measurements were carried out during 2-3 days in each room during the entire workday. Data regarding the constitution of the child group for every day was collected at the end of the week from the enrollment list.

  • Communication patterns and stress in the preschool : an observational study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Child Care in Practice. - : Routledge. - 1357-5279 .- 1476-489X. ; 23:2, s. 181-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study included 12 preschool departments, with two teachers in six departments characterised by high levels of stress and burnout and two teachers in six departments characterised by low levels of stress and burnout. A total of 24 females with a mean age of 43.5 years participated in the study. The teachers rated stress, fatigue, work demands and work burnout using different questionnaires. Cortisol samples were collected at wake up, one hour after wake up, at 11:00 am and at 09:00 pm. An observation study was conducted to create an overview of the communication patterns between the children and the personnel during different time periods. Significant differences between the two groups of teachers were observed regarding the organisation of the work and family situation. The high-stress teachers had more communications from colleagues than low-stress teachers, spent more time on pedagogical planning and had young children at home. These results support the view that the organisation is a central factor regarding stress experienced by preschool teachers.

  • Individual factors and its association with experience noise annoyance in Swedish preschools
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics. - : Acoustical Society of America (ASA). - 1939-800X. ; 30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies have shown that preschool teachers often report having a troublesome working environment in terms of high noise levels. Noise annoyance is often reported from employees working under poor acoustical conditions. The aim of the study was to investigate whether there is an association between rated noise annoyance and actual noise exposure for Swedish preschool teachers. The study included 90 preschool teachers in Sweden. The average equivalent noise exposure was about 71 dBA and the average rated noise annoyance was about 65 on a 0-100mm scale. Rated noise annoyance was weakly associated with the sound exposure during a work week in the preschool (r = 0,23, P = 0,07). Analysis for differences in noise annoyance ratings between preschool teachers with different individual characteristics (hearing impairment, tinnitus, age, gender) revealed no statistical significant differences. However; teachers that worry about their hearing (t = -4,66, df = 86, P < 0,05) and teachers with a high degree of burnout (t = -2,88, df = 86, P < 0,05) reported more noise annoyance. Other factors besides noise levels need to be investigated to better explain what affects differences in rated noise annoyance at work among preschool teachers in Sweden.

  • Noise Exposure and Hearing Related Risks for Technical Officials during a Major Badminton Tournament
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Jacobs Journal of Physical Rehabilitation Medicine. - Austin : Jacobs Publishers. - 2469-3103. ; 4:1, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the noise exposure for different technical officials during a major badminton tournament. Methods: Individual noise exposure for technical officials was measured during the 23rd BWF World Championship, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland during all days of the tournament. Results: Umpires and on-court-doctors had equivalent noise exposure, when working longer shifts, that exceeded the exposure limit according to the EU 2003/10/EC noise directive. Exposure limits regarding impulse sound was also exceeded during several work shifts during the tournament. Conclusions: Technical officials are exposed to noise levels that exceed current occupational health leg-islation within the EU, and may therefore be at risk of developing hearing related disorders. It is of high importance for the organizers of sports events to reduce the noise exposure for the technical officials by scheduling shorter work periods, but also by providing individual hearing protectors.

  • Noise in the preschool : health and preventive measures
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is based on noise recordings and health evaluations carried out at preschools in the northern part of Sweden. Sound level recordings were made on individuals and by use of stationary devices in dining rooms and play halls. Health evaluations were based on ratings by use of questionnaires and by analyses of cortisol. The average equivalent individual noise exposure was 71 dB(A). The average equivalent noise levels in the dining room and playing halls were 64 dB(A). The hearing loss of the employees was significantly higher for the frequencies tested than in an unexposed control group. Symptoms of tinnitus were reported among 31% of the employees. Noise annoyance was rated as somewhat to very annoying, and the voices of the children were the most annoying noise source. The dB(A) level and fluctuations of the noise exposure were significantly correlated with the number of children per department. Stress and energy output were pronounced among the employees. About 30% of the staff experienced strong burnout syndromes. Mental recovery was low as indicated by noise fatigue and high levels of stress after work. Increased cortisol levels during work were associated with higher number of children present at the department. An essential finding of the thesis was that noise and noise sources may impair the pedagogic work, thereby increasing the work load of employees. It is concluded that noise exposure in the preschool, isolated or in combination with other stressors, plays a fundamental role in the building up of acute as well as long term stress. An intervention study implementing six acoustical and seven organizational measures was tested, aimed to improve the noise situation in the departments. Acoustical measures improved the noise situation as well as the rated noise experiences better than the organizational measures.
