  • Luftkvalitetsmätningar i 15 tätorter vintern 1998/99
  • 1999
Totalt mättes i sex veckor fördelade över vintersäsongen.

  • Purification, Stereoisomeric Analysis and Quantification of Biologically Active Compounds in Extracts from Pine Sawflies, African Butterflies and Orchid Bees
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Stereochemistry plays an important role in nature because biologically important molecules such as amino acids, nucleotides and sugars, only exist in enantiomerically pure forms. Semiochemicals carry messages, between the same species (pheromones) and between different species (allelochemicals). Both pheromones and allelochemicals can be used as environmentally friendly pest management. Many semiochemicals, i.e. behaviour modifying chemicals, consist of pure or well-defined mixtures of stereoisomers, where some of the other stereoisomers can be repellent. It is therefore important to be able to separate them to produce a synthetic pheromone in a mixture that is attractive.Pine sawflies are a family of insects that in some cases can be severe defoliators of conifer trees. Diprion pini, Diprion similis and Neodiprion sertifer are severe pests for these trees and have got the most attention in pine sawfly pheromone studies. The pheromone precursors are stored in the female body as long-chain secondary alcohols, which, when released, are esterified to acetates or propionates. The alcohols are chiral, and normally one of the stereoisomer is the main pheromone component, sometimes possible together with other stereoisomers as essential minor components.Bicyclus is a genus of African butterflies, and especially Bicyclus anynana has become a popular model for the study of life history evolution, morphology, mating choice and genetics. The wing pattern of Bicyclus differs depending on the season, with large eyespots during the rain-season and small or absent spots during the dry season. Euglossa is one of the genera among the orchid bees in the Neotropics that does not produce its own pheromone. Instead, the males collect fragrances from orchids and other sources and store them in a pocket in their hind legs. Both Bicyclus and Euglossa use semiochemicals similar to pine sawflies, and thus can be analysed by the same methods.Pheromones and other semiochemicals in insects are often present in low amounts in a complex matrix, and purification of the sample before chemical analysis is often required. A common method is gradient elution on a solid phase silica column. Separation of stereoisomers can be achieved either by using a column with a chiral stationary phase (CSP) or with pre-column derivatisation using a column with an achiral stationary phase (ASP) or a combination of both, with mass detection as the dominant detection method. The purpose of this work has been to improve the purification method, find suitable methods to separate the stereoisomers of secondary alcohols, and to apply this on extracts of insects.By selecting the right fractions to collect during gradient elution the purification method was optimised. To reduce plasticizer contamination from ordinary columns, solid phase columns of Teflon or glass were used. For pre-column derivatisation of different chiral alcohols various acid chlorides were tested. For the pine sawfly pheromone precursors enantiopure (2S)-2-acetoxypropionyl chloride was the best choice. To separate some of the stereoisomers achiral 2-naphthoyl chloride was used. For derivatisation of 6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-ol (R)-trans-chrysanthemoyl chloride was the best choice. The derivatised alcohols were separated on different columns, both chiral and non-chiral. Varian FactorFour VF-23ms was chosen as a general-purpose column, the Agilent HP-88 column was the best column with an ASP of those tested, and the Chiraldex B-PA column (CSP) was the only one that could separate all eight stereoisomers of derivatised 3,7-dimethylundecan-2-ol, 3,7-dimethyldodecan-2-ol, and 3,7-dimethyltridecan-2-ol.To determine the stereoisomeric purity of standard solutions used in field experiments and extracts of different species of insects the optimised methods were applied. For extracts from B. anynana, Euglossa and Neodiprion lecontei this work describe the first determination of the stereochemistry of some of their semiochemicals. For the determination of the stereochemistry of chiral semiochemicals the methods for purification and separation presented herein have shown to be of great value. The results will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of the communication among insects, and ultimately to a more environmentally friendly pest control.

  • A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Trajectories of Mental Health Problems in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities. - : Springer. - 1056-263X .- 1573-3580. ; 36, s. 203-242
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To review the longitudinal trajectories - and the factors influencing their development - of mental health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Systematic review methods were employed. Searches of six databases used keywords and MeSH terms related to children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, mental health problems, and longitudinal research. After the removal of duplicates, reviewers independently screened records for inclusion, extracted data (outcomes and influencing factors), and evaluated the risk of bias. Findings were tabulated and synthesized using graphs and a narrative. Searches identified 94,662 unique records, from which 49 publications were included. The median publication year was 2015. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were the most commonly included population in retrieved studies. In almost 50% of studies, trajectories of mental health problems changed by < 10% between the first and last time point. Despite multiple studies reporting longitudinal trajectories of mental health problems, greater conceptual clarity and consideration of the measures included in research is needed, along with the inclusion of a more diverse range of populations of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

  • Correlations between selected monoterpene hydrocarbons in the xylem of six Pinus (pinaceae) species
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Chemoecology. - 0937-7409 .- 1423-0445. ; 11:2, s. 97-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The compositions of 23 monoterpene hydrocarbons of six pine species (Pinus sylvestris, P. yunnanensis ll,ris, P. armandii, P. tropicalis, P. cubensis and P. caribaca) were compared, using multivariate data analysis. Four of the six species were clearly different from the other species in a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) model, based on the relative amounts (selective normalization) of the monoterpenes. The correlation coefficients between constituents were determined separately for each species and the strongest correlations were found between (+)-alpha -pinene and (+)-camphene and between the corresponding (-)-enantiomers, in all species. This pattern, i.e. a good correlation in all species, was neither shown by the correlation of the structurally more similar (+)-alpha/beta -pinenes, nor by the (-)-alpha/beta -pinenes or within the enantiomeric pairs of alpha -pinene and beta -pinene. For these pairs of monoterpenes, good correlations were found in some species. None of the species showed good correlations in all the investigated monoterpene pairs presented here. Correlations between monoterpenes in insect-attacked trees (P. cubensis and P. caribaea, attacked by Dioryctria horneana, and P. yunnanensis, attacked by Tomicus piniperda) were also determined. The results are discussed from chemotaxonomic and biosynthetic points of view.

  • ARTSCAN III : A randomized phase III study comparing chemoradiotherapy with cisplatin versus cetuximab in patients with locoregionally advanced head and neck squamous cell cancer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Oncology. - : American Society of Clinical Oncology. - 0732-183X .- 1527-7755. ; 39:1, s. 38-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE We performed an open-label randomized controlled phase III study comparing treatment outcome and toxicity between radiotherapy (RT) with concomitant cisplatin versus concomitant cetuximab in patients with locoregionally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC; stage III-IV according to the Union for International Cancer Control TNM classification, 7th edition). MATERIALS AND METHODS Eligible patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either intravenous cetuximab 400 mg/m2 1 week before start of RT followed by 250 mg/m2/wk, or weekly intravenous cisplatin 40 mg/m2, during RT. RT was conventionally fractionated. Patients with T3-T4 tumors underwent a second random assignment 1:1 between standard RT dose 68.0 Gy to the primary tumor or dose escalation to 73.1 Gy. Primary end point was overall survival (OS) evaluated using adjusted Cox regression analysis. Secondary end points were locoregional control, local control with dose-escalated RT, pattern of failure, and adverse effects. RESULTS Study inclusion was prematurely closed after an unplanned interim analysis when 298 patients had been randomly assigned. At 3 years, OS was 88% (95% CI, 83% to 94%) and 78% (95% CI, 71% to 85%) in the cisplatin and cetuximab groups, respectively (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.63; 95% CI, 0.93 to 2.86; P 5 .086). The cumulative incidence of locoregional failures at 3 years was 23% (95% CI, 16% to 31%) compared with 9% (95% CI, 4% to 14%) in the cetuximab versus the cisplatin group (Gray’s test P 5 .0036). The cumulative incidence of distant failures did not differ between the treatment groups. Dose escalation in T3-T4 tumors did not increase local control. CONCLUSION Cetuximab is inferior to cisplatin regarding locoregional control for concomitant treatment with RT in patients with locoregionally advanced HNSCC. Additional studies are needed to identify possible subgroups that still may benefit from concomitant cetuximab treatment.

  • Mercury management in non-ferrous metal industry in China – a baseline study
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Non-Ferrous metal (NFM) industry (producing e.g. Copper, Zink and Lead) is a major source of mercury emissions to the atmosphere. In 2011 there were over 8 000 smelters for NFM in China with varying production capacity and technological status. Emissions of mercury are controlled by mercury contents in ores or concentrates, the process technology used in the specific plant, the presence of air pollution control technologies, or mercury capture technologies. The development of emission inventories is thus complex and requires large amounts of information. In this report available information on China´s NFM sector is presented along with a summary of existing emission estimates for mercury. Finally, recommendations for improvement of these emission inventories are provided. This study was initiated within the framework of the bilateral environmental cooperation agreement between Sweden and China, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ministry of Environmental Protection in China (MEP). The two authorities started cooperating on mercury, in conjunction with the first international negotiating meeting on a global binding instrument on mercury, held in Stockholm in June 2010. In 2012, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute was appointed to lead a base-line study with the aim to compile available information on mercury emissions from the non-ferrous metal industry in China, along with information on abatement measures other sector information. • Accounting for bacterial overlap between raw water communities and contaminating sources improves the accuracy of signature-based microbial source tracking
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Microbiology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-302X. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microbial source tracking (MST) analysis is essential to identifying and mitigating the fecal pollution of water resources. The signature-based MST method uses a library of sequences to identify contaminants based on operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that are unique to a certain source. However, no clear guidelines for how to incorporate OTU overlap or natural variation in the raw water bacterial community into MST analyses exist. We investigated how the inclusion of bacterial overlap between sources in the library affects source prediction accuracy. To achieve this, large-scale sampling-including feces from seven species, raw sewage, and raw water samples from water treatment plants - was followed by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The MST library was defined using three settings: (i) no raw water communities represented; (ii) raw water communities selected through clustering analysis; and (iii) local water communities collected across consecutive years. The results suggest that incorporating either the local background or representative bacterial composition improves MST analyses, as the results were positively correlated to measured levels of fecal indicator bacteria and the accuracy at which OTUs were assigned to the correct contamination source increased fourfold. Using the proportion of OTUs with high source origin probability, underpinning a contaminating signal, is a solid foundation in a framework for further deciphering and comparing contaminating signals derived in signature-based MST approaches. In conclusion, incorporating background bacterial composition of water in MST can improve mitigation efforts for minimizing the spread of pathogenic and antibiotic resistant bacteria into essential freshwater resources.

  • Base of tongue squamous cell carcinomas, outcome depending on treatment strategy and p16 status. A population-based study from the Swedish Head and Neck Cancer Register
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 61:4, s. 433-440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The base of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (BOTSCC) is mainly an HPV-related tumor. Radiotherapy (EBRT) ± concomitant chemotherapy (CT) is the backbone of the curatively intended treatment, with brachytherapy (BT) boost as an option. With four different treatment strategies in Sweden, a retrospective study based on the population-based Swedish Head and Neck Cancer Register (SweHNCR) was initiated.Material and methods: Data on tumors, treatment and outcomes in patients with BOTSCC treated between 2008 and 2014 were validated through medical records and updated as needed. Data on p16 status were updated or completed with immunohistochemical analysis of archived tumor material. Tumors were reclassified according to the UICC 8th edition. Results: Treatment was EBRT, EBRT + CT, EBRT + BT or EBRT + CT + BT in 151, 145, 82 and 167 patients respectively (n = 545). A p16 analysis was available in 414 cases; 338 were p16+ and 76 p16−. 5-year overall survival (OS) was 68% (95% CI: 64–72%), with76% and 37% for p16+ patients and p16− patients, respectively. An increase in OS was found with the addition of CT to EBRT for patients with p16+ tumors, stages II–III, but for patients with tumor stage I, p16+ (UICC 8) none of the treatment strategies was superior to EBRT alone. Conclusion: In the present retrospective population-based study of BOTSCC brachytherapy was found to be of no beneficial value in curatively intended treatment. An increase in survival was found for EBRT + CT compared to EBRT alone in patients with advanced cases, stages II and III (UICC 8), but none of the regimes was significantly superior to EBRT as a single treatment modality for stage I (UICC 8), provided there was p16 positivity in the tumor. In the small group of patients with p16− tumors, a poorer prognosis was found, but the small sample size did not allow any comparisons between different treatment strategies.

  • Kortlivade klimatpåverkande luftföroreningar (SLCP)
  • 2015
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • IVL has on commission from the Swedish Cross-Party Committee on Environmental Objectives (Miljömålsberedningen) compiled information on present and future emissions of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) in Sweden, as well as performed an analysis of further emission reduction potentials and associated costs in 2030. Main results from the study: According to the Swedish emission projections, which take current legislation into account, the national total emissions of all SLCPs will be lower in 2030 compared to today. The trend, however, is different for different sources. Emissions from road traffic are expected to decline significantly. From other mobile sources reductions are also expected, but to a lesser extent than from road traffic. Emissions from residential combustion of biomass are expected to remain at about the same level as at present, why these emissions in relative terms will increase in importance. Mobile sources and residential combustion, which produce emissions from combustion of fuels, emit all SLCPs except HFCs. The agricultural sector is the main emission source for CH4 both today and in the future. For NMVOC emissions from the “solvent and product use” sector is the dominating source. CH4 from the agricultural sector, as well as NMVOC from product and solvent use, are both reduced only slightly to 2030 according to the projections. Emissions of CH4 and NMVOC from other sources are projected be reduced to a greater extent. Agriculture will thus be of relatively greater importance for emissions of CH4 in the future, as will solvent and product use for NMVOC emissions. Emissions of HFCs are expected to decline significantly in the future and there is most likely no cost-effective potential for further reductions of HFC emissions. There is currently no comprehensive Swedish analysis available of cost-effective measures to reduce emissions of SLCP in Sweden 2030. Best available knowledge suggests that there will be technical emission reduction measures available, with a potential to reduce emissions in 2030 beyond currently projected emissions. This report is only available in Swedish.

  • Developments in biobanking workflow standardization providing sample integrity and stability
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Proteomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1874-3919 .- 1876-7737. ; 95:SI, s. 38-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recommendations and outlines for standardization in biobanking processes are presented by a research team with long-term experience in clinical studies. These processes have important bearing on the use of samples in developing assays. These measurements are useful to document states of health and disease that are beneficial for academic research, commercial healthcare, drug development industry and government regulating agencies. There is a need for increasing awareness within proteomic and genomic communities regarding the basic concepts of collecting, storing and utilizing clinical samples. Quality control and sample suitability for analysis need to be documented and validated to ensure data integrity and establish contexts for interpretation of results. Standardized methods in proteomics and genomics are required to be practiced throughout the community allowing datasets to be comparable and shared for analysis. For example, sample processing of thousands of clinical samples, performed in 384 high-density sample tube systems in a fully automated workflow, preserves sample content and is presented showing validation criteria. Large studies will be accompanied by biological and molecular information with corresponding clinical records from patients and healthy donors. These developments position biobanks of human patient samples as an increasingly recognized major asset in disease research, future drug development and within patient care. Biological significance: The current manuscript is of major relevance to the proteomic and genomic fields, as it outlines the standardization aspects of biobanking and the requirements that are needed to run future clinical studies that will benefit the patients where OMICS science will play a major role. A global view of the field is given where best practice and conventional acceptances are presented along with ongoing large-scale biobanking projects. The authors represent broadly stakeholders that cover the academic, pharma, biotech and healthcare fields with extensive experience and deliveries. This contribution will be a milestone paper to the proteomic and genomic scientists to present data in the future that will have impact to the life science area. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Standardization and Quality Control in Proteomics.

  • Stardardization Developments for Large Scale Biobanks in Smoking Related Diseases - A Model System for Blood Sample Processing and Storage
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Translational Respiratory Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2213-0802. ; 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biobank samples stored in biobanks give researchers and respiratory healthcare institutions access to datasets of analytes valuable for both diagnostic and research practices. The usefulness of these samples in clinical decision-making is highly dependent on their quality and integrity. New procedures that better preserve sample integrity and reduce degradation are being developed to meet the needs of both present and future biobanking. Hereby we present an automatic sample workflow scheme that is designed to handle high numbers of blood samples. Blood fractions are aliquoted, heat sealed using novel technology, and stored in 384 tube high-density sample arrays. The newly developed 384 biobank rack system is especially suited for preserving identical small aliquots. This technology development allows rapid access to a given sample in the frozen archive while maintaining individual sample integrity with sample tube confinement and quality management. We provide data on robotic processing of clinical samples at -80°C, following initial processing, analysis and shipping between laboratories throughout Europe. Subsequent to unpacking, re-sorting, and storage at these sites, the samples have been returned for analysis. Biomarker analysis of 13 common tests in the clinical chemistry unit of the hospital provides evidence of qualitative and stable logistics using the 384-sample tube system.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Proteome Research. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1535-3893 .- 1535-3907. ; 12:1, s. 134-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A first research development progress report of the Chromosome 19 Consortium with members from Sweden, Norway, Spain, United States, China and India, a part of the Chromosome-centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP) global initiative, is presented (http://www.c-hpp.org). From the chromosome 19 peptide-targeted library constituting 6159 peptides, a pilot study was conducted using a subset with 125 isotope-labeled peptides. We applied an annotation strategy with triple quadrupole, ESI-Qtrap, and MALDI mass spectrometry platforms, comparing the quality of data within and in between these instrumental set-ups. LC–MS conditions were outlined by multiplex assay developments, followed by MRM assay developments. SRM was applied to biobank samples, quantifying kallikrein 3 (prostate specific antigen) in plasma from prostate cancer patients. The antibody production has been initiated for more than 1200 genes from the entire chromosome 19, and the progress developments are presented. We developed a dedicated transcript microarray to serve as the mRNA identifier by screening cancer cell lines. NAPPA protein arrays were built to align with the transcript data with the Chromosome 19 NAPPA chip, dedicated to 90 proteins, as the first development delivery. We have introduced an IT-infrastructure utilizing a LIMS system that serves as the key interface for the research teams to share and explore data generated within the project. The cross-site data repository will form the basis for sample processing, including biological samples as well as patient samples from national Biobanks.

  • Effect of meloxicam treatment on movement asymmetry in riding horses in training
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 14:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantitative gait analysis has revealed that a large proportion of horses in training, perceived as free from lameness by their owners, show movement asymmetries of equal magnitude to horses with mild clinical lameness. Whether these movement asymmetries are related to orthopaedic pain and/or pathology has yet to be further investigated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine whether movement asymmetries in riding horses in training are affected by anti-inflammatory treatment with meloxicam. In a crossover design, horses were treated with meloxicam or placebo for four days respectively, with a 14-16 day washout period between treatments. Objective movement analysis utilising body mounted accelerometers was performed on a hard and a soft surface before and on day four of each treatment. A trial mean was calculated for the differences between the two vertical displacement minima and maxima of head (HDmin, HDmax) and pelvis (PDmin, PDmax) per stride. Horses (n = 66) with trial mean asymmetries greater than 6 mm for HDmin or HDmax, or more than 3 mm for PDmin or PDmax, at baseline were included. The difference before and after each treatment in the measured movement asymmetry was assessed with linear mixed models. Treatment with meloxicam did not significantly affect the movement asymmetry in any of the models applied (all p>0.30). These results raise new questions: are the movement asymmetries in riding horses in training simply expressions of biological variation or are they related to pain/dysfunction that is non-responsive to meloxicam treatment?

  • Changes in tooth mortality between 1990 and 2002 among adults in Västerbotten County, Sweden : influence of socioeconomic factors, general health, smoking, and dental care habits on tooth mortality
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - 0347-9994. ; 35:2, s. 77-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objectives of the study were to analyse changes in tooth mortality among adults in Västerbotten County, Sweden, between 1990 and 2002 and determine whether socioeconomic factors, general health, smoking, and dental care habits influenced tooth mortality. The study was based on samples drawn from the adult population in Västerbotten County in 1990 and 2002. The studied age groups were 35-, 50-, and 65-year-olds. In 2002 75-year-olds were included. The surveys comprised a clinical examination and a questionnaire. The latter focused on oro-facial symptoms, socioeconomic factors, general health, smoking, and dental care habits. Complete data were obtained from 715 individuals in 1990 and from 768 individuals in 2002.Variables used to depict tooth mortality were edentulousness, occlusal supporting zones (Eichner index), and number of teeth. The prevalence of edentulousness in Västerbotten County decreased from 12.7% in 1990 to 3.7% in 2002 (P < 0.001). The mean number of teeth increased in all age groups between 1990 and 2002, and so did the number of individuals with tooth contact in all occlusal supporting zones and no gaps between teeth. Low educational level, weak economic status, smoking, and irregular visits to the dental clinic were all significantly related to increased tooth mortality. Between 1990 and 2002 tooth mortality decreased significantly in the adult population of Västerbotten County, Sweden. Cross-sectional analysis identified socioeconomic factors, smoking, and irregular use of dental care services as being related to tooth mortality in both 1990 and 2002.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Proteome Research. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1535-3893 .- 1535-3907. ; 16:9, s. 3242-3254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) assay was developed for precise quantitation of 87 plasma proteins including the three isoforms of apolipoprotein E (APOE) associated with cardiovascular diseases using nanoscale liquid chromatography separation and stable isotope dilution strategy. The analytical performance of the assay was evaluated and we found an average technical variation of 4.7% in 4-5 orders of magnitude dynamic range (approximate to 0.2 mg/L to 4.5 g/L) from whole plasma digest. Here, we report a complete workflow, including sample processing adapted to 96-well plate format and normalization strategy for large-scale studies. To further investigate the MS-based quantitation the amount of six selected proteins was measured by routinely used clinical chemistry assays as well and the two methods showed excellent correlation with high significance (p-value < 10e-5) for the six proteins, in addition for the cardiovascular predictor factor, APOB: APOA1 ratio (r = 0.969, p-value < 10e-5). Moreover, we utilized the developed assay for screening of biobank samples from patients with myocardial infarction and performed the comparative analysis of patient groups with STEMI (ST- segment elevation myocardial infarction), NSTEMI (non ST- segment elevation myocardial infarction) and type-2 AMI (type-2 myocardial infarction) patients.

  • Friluftsliv in Physical Education Teacher education practice – challenges, conflicting meanings and negotiations
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: AIESEP 2024 book of abstracts.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this presentation we explore the content of friluftsliv in physical ed-ucation teacher education (PETE). Friluftsliv is a quite unique cultural tradition with a long and deeply rooted history in the Scandinavian countries, characterised by in-formal living outdoors with ‘nature as home’. At the same time, a more institutional-ised form of friluftsliv occurs as a subject content in schools and an explicit key learning area in physical education (PE) as in for example Norway or Sweden much in the same way that outdoor education is in several other countries. In sum, the unique characteristics of friluftsliv as a cultural tradition entails specific educational challenges when incorporated into school PE. Here, PETE plays an important part in preparing future teachers to educate in matters pertaining to friluftsliv. Hence, the purpose of the study is to contribute with knowledge on educational challenges with the use of friluftsliv in PETE practice. In the study, we focus on events where mean-ings of friluftsliv in PETE are in conflict. The empirical material consists of diverse materials from activities in friluftsliv in PETE programmes: study guides, field trip plans, students’ vlogs from overnight stays outdoors, video recordings from two longer field trips, audio recordings from evening seminars during one field trip, and students’ written reflections afterwards. First, we identified situations where mean-ings of friluftsliv are at stake. In the analyses we identified and described educational challenges using a transactional approach. In the results we have provided addi-tional evidence that friluftsliv in PETE is a practice where different meanings are put into play. These meanings are often conflicting. These conflicts, in turn, creates sig-nificant educational challenges for teacher educators, but also for the students in PETE. Illustrative examples from two general challenges will be presented, where meanings of friluftsliv are put into play; (i) Participant in friluftsliv or future teacher, and (ii) What is ‘real’ friluftsliv in PETE. The examples illustrate the diversity of situ-ations in PETE practice in which meanings are in conflict and provide knowledge about the educational processes related to the content of friluftsliv. In the second part using a zoomed-in perspective, we present an in-depth example to illustrate how conflicting meanings regarding friluftsliv are negotiated by students in the prac-tice of PETE. Further the potential of these negotiations will be discussed and how transforming experiences of friluftsliv in PETE to teaching friluftsliv in PE can be further developed.

  • Friluftsliv och naturmöten i utbildningspraktik
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall interest of this thesis is to contribute with knowledge about meaning making processes in educational encounters with nature in different educational practices. The exploration consists of four studies based on a pragmatic perspective on meaning making inspired by the works of John Dewey and Ludwig Wittgenstein. A discourse analytical approach is also used in the first study to analyse the curriculum documents. The result confirms that encounters with nature have a clear position in the curriculum documents, and friluftsliv is a prioritised content in PETE. It is further confirmed that the field of outdoor education is a field of conflicting meanings that pose significant educational challenges. Indeterminate situations occur and may influence students’ possibilities to transform the educational content in PETE to a school context. Another conclusion from the results is that instrumental meanings and a sportification of friluftsliv often get precedence over more emotional based meanings connected to nature. The results also show empirical examples where encounters with nature enable participants to create moral relations towards nature. This potential is highlighted in previous research as one of the most important in order to (re)connect our relation towards nature and in extension better conditions to deal with environmental questions.

  • Occurrence and correlations of monoterpene hydrocarbon enantiomers in Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Ecology. - 0098-0331 .- 1573-1561. ; 26:7, s. 1701-1720
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relative amounts and enantiomeric compositions of monoterpene hydrocarbons in branch and trunk xylem, in needles, and in resin from apical buds in 18 Pinus sylvestris trees have been determined and compared with the terpene content in branch xylem and needles of Picea abies. Besides the high amount of (+)-3-carene, an excess of (+)-alpha-pinene has been found in P. sylvestris, whereas in P. abies (-)-alpha-pinene dominates over (+)-alpha-pinene. In P. sylvestris, clear positive correlations were found between (+)-alpha-pinene and (+)-camphene in the four tissues analyzed. Good positive correlations were also observed between (-)-alpha-pinene and (-)-camphene in the two types of xylem, between (+)-alpha-pinene and (+)-beta-pinene in the resin, and between tricyclene and (-)-camphene in resin and needles. In P. abies, positive correlations were found between (+)-alpha-pinene and (+)-camphene in the branch xylem and between tricyclene and (-)-camphene as well as between (-)-alpha-pinene and (-)-camphene in the needles. Complex relationships between (-)-alpha-pinene and (-)-beta-pinene were found both in the P. abies and in the P. sylvestris tissues. The importance of the enantiomeric composition of alpha-pinene for the host selection of Ips typographus, Tomicus piniperda, and Hylobius abietis is discussed.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim with this article is to contribute knowledge about the meanings of friluftsliv in educational practice. This is done by investigating what friluftsliv becomes in the ongoing practices of PETE in Sweden and how these meanings are established in the studied activities. The empirical material consists of different kinds of material from friluftsliv activities in PETE programmes: study guides, field trip plans, students' vlogs from overnight stays outdoors, video recordings from two longer field trips, audio recordings from evening seminars during the field trips and students' written reflections after them. In order to identify meanings of friluftsliv and how these are established we used a transactional analysis based on Dewey. Five different ways of what friluftsliv becomes in PETE practice were identified in this study. The different meanings reflect the complex picture of contradictions and lack of common ground for the content and motives identified in the outdoor education field. Our study also confirms how the meaning of friluftsliv as skills is established by putting up tents, lighting fires, building wind shelters and so on, and how this contributes to a focus on the instrumental values in PETE. On the other hand, our study shows that other meanings of friluftsliv are established in the ongoing practice, where more intrinsic values are at stake even if they are often overshadowed in PETE practice. In conclusion the results also point to the potential of fritluftsliv in terms of a suggested move away from an activity-based personal and social development discourse in favour of experiences of educating for environmentally sustainable human-nature relations. The challenge is how to make these experiences educational in PETE and how to guide students in transforming experiences in more exclusive friluftsliv into pedagogical competence as future teachers using friluftsliv for different purposes in school PE.

  • Art therapy improves experienced quality of life among women undergoing treatment for breast cancer : A randomized controlled study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer Care. - : John Wiley & Sons Inc.. - 0961-5423 .- 1365-2354. ; 18:1, s. 69-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women with breast cancer are naturally exposed to strain related to diagnosis and treatment, and this influences their experienced quality of life (QoL). The present paper reports the effect, with regard to QoL aspects, of an art therapy intervention among 41 women undergoing radiotherapy treatment for breast cancer. The women were randomized to an intervention group with individual art therapy sessions for 1 h/week (n = 20), or to a control group (n = 21). The WHOQOL-BREF and EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire-BR23, were used for QoL assessment, and administrated on three measurement occasions, before the start of radiotherapy and 2 and 6 months later. The results indicate an overall improvement in QoL aspects among women in the intervention group. A significant increase in total health, total QoL, physical health and psychological health was observed in the art therapy group. A significant positive difference within the art therapy group was also seen, concerning future perspectives, body image and systemic therapy side effects. The present study provides strong support for the use of art therapy to improve QoL for women undergoing radiotherapy treatment for breast cancer.

  • Identification of a Novel Proteoform of Prostate Specific Antigen (SNP-L132I) in Clinical Samples by Multiple Reaction Monitoring.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Molecular & Cellular Proteomics. - 1535-9484. ; 12:10, s. 2761-2773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a well-established tumor marker, which is frequently employed as model biomarker to develop and evaluate emerging quantitative proteomics techniques, partially due to wide access to commercialized immunoassays serving as "gold standard". We designed a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) assay to detect PSA proteoforms in clinical samples (n=72), utilizing specificity and sensitivity of the method. We report for the first time, a PSA proteoform, coded by SNP-L132I (rs2003783), observed in 9 samples in both heterozygous (n=7) and homozygous (n=2) expression profiles. Other isoforms of PSA, derived from protein databases, were not identified by four unique proteotypic tryptic peptides. We have also utilized our MRM assay for precise quantitative analysis of PSA concentrations in both seminal and blood plasma samples. The analytical performance was evaluated, providing close agreement between each quantitation based on three selected peptides (LSEPAELTDAVK, IVGGWECEK and SVILLGR) and a routinely used commercialized immunoassay. Additionally, we have disclosed that the peptide IVGGWECEK is shared with kallikrein-related peptidase 2 and therefore not unique for PSA. Hence, we propose to use another tryptic sequence (SVILLGR) for accurate MRM-quantification of PSA in clinical samples.

  • Quantification of Human Kallikrein-2 in Clinical Samples by Selected Reaction Monitoring
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Proteome Research. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1535-3893 .- 1535-3907. ; 12:10, s. 4612-4616
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, the number of mass spectrometry-based quantification assays has been increased, partly due to the global efforts of chromosome-centric human proteome project (C-HPP). Our goal at the Chromosome 19 Consortium is to provide novel selected reaction monitoring (SRM) assays of proteins coded on chromosome 19. We have selected the two most useful signature peptides (NSQVWLGR and HNLFEPEDTGQR) of human kallikrein-2 (hK2 – NX_P20151) and developed an SRM assay. Details about the analytical parameters, including multiple transitions by peptides are presented. The endogenous levels of hK2 were determined in clinical samples (n=35). The limit of quantification was also estimated by spiking heavy isotope labeled peptides into seminal plasma samples at various concentrations (LOQ ≈ 29 ng/mL).

  • Results from a prospective, randomised study on (accelerated) preoperative versus (conventional) postoperative radiotherapy in treatment of patients with resectable squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity : The ARTSCAN 2 study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Radiotherapy and Oncology. - : Elsevier. - 0167-8140 .- 1879-0887. ; 166, s. 26-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purposeAn earlier prospective randomised multicentre study (ARTSCAN) in head and neck cancer patients that compared conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (CF) with accelerated radiotherapy (AF) was inconclusive. In the subgroup of oral cavity squamous cell cancer (OCSCC) a large absolute, but not statistically significant, difference in local control was seen in favour of AF. This difference was more pronounced in resectable tumours. The finding raised the hypothesis that AF could be beneficial for OCSCC patients. In addition, the longstanding controversy on pre- or postoperative radiotherapy was addressed.Materials and methodsPatients with OCSCC, judged to withstand and likely benefit from combined therapy, were recruited. Subjects were randomised to either preoperative AF with 43 fractions given as a concomitant boost with two fractions/day to the tumour bearing volume to a total dose of 68 Gy in 4.5 weeks followed by surgery, or primary surgery with postoperative CF, total dose 60 or 66 Gy in 6–7 weeks. For patients whose tumours had high-risk features, 66 Gy and concomitant cisplatin was prescribed.Results250 patients were randomised. Median follow-up was 5 years for locoregional control (LRC) and 9 years for overall survival (OS). There were no statistically significant differences between the two treatment arms regarding LRC and OS. LRC at five years was 73% (95% CI, 65–82) in preoperative AF and 78% (95% CI, 70–85) in postoperative CF.Toxicity was more pronounced in preoperative AF.ConclusionThis study does not support that AF prior to surgery improves outcome in oral cavity cancer compared with postoperative CF.
