  • Swedish District Nurses' experiences on the use of information and communication technology for supporting people with serious chronic illness living at home - a case study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 24:2, s. 259-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this case study was to describe two District Nurses' (DN) experiences of using information and communication technology (ICT) to communicate with chronically ill people in their homes. An electronic messaging program via computers and mobile phones with an Internet connection was used, enabling DNs and the ill people to exchange messages to and from anywhere. The program comprised different virtual rooms, and communication was via text messages. The DNs in this study used the program two to four times each week from November 2003 to March 2004. Semi-structured interviews were performed before, during and after the implementation of the new technology and were analysed using thematic content analysis. The results showed that the DNs felt that the technology increased accessibility to nursing care through a more direct communication with the ill person meaning that a more trusting relationship could be created. The DNs also experienced that the use of ICT saved working time. This study indicates that the use of ICT for communication allowed the DN to better support a chronically ill person at home leading to improved home nursing care. This method of communication cannot replace physical presence, but can be seen as a complement to nursing care at home. © 2009 The Authors. • Information exchange between registered nurses and district nurses during the discharge planning process : Cross-sectional analysis of survey data
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Informatics for Health and Social Care. - 1753-8157 .- 1753-8165. ; 40:1, s. 23-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Discharge planning is an important care process for managing transitions from the hospital to the community. It has been studied for >20 years, but few studies clarify the information exchanged between healthcare providers. This study aimed to describe nurses' experiences and perceptions of information exchange during the discharge planning process, focused on what, when and how information is exchanged between the hospital and primary healthcare. Method: A web-based census survey was used to collect data; the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-squared test. A questionnaire was distributed to 194 registered nurses (129 respondents) from a central county hospital and 67 district nurses (42 respondents) working in 13 primary healthcare centres. Results: The results show a significant difference between given and received information between the two groups. Both groups thought the information exchange worked best when all participants met at the discharge planning conference and that the electronic information system was difficult to use. Conclusion: This study shows difficulties knowing what patient-related information needs to give and not receiving the expected information. These results can be used to develop knowledge about roles, work tasks and needs to enhance the outcome of the process and the information exchanged. © 2015 Informa UK Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Swedish nursing students' perceptions of the concept of health: A phenomenographic study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Health Education Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 0017-8969 .- 1748-8176. ; 75:4, s. 385-395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Health is a central and important concept in nursing and nursing education, and has been theorised about in both positive and negative terms. The purpose of this study was to explore Swedish nursing students' perceptions of the concept of health.Design: A phenomenographic research approach was used to understand how nursing students perceive the concept of health.Setting: The study group comprised students (n = 233) attending the nursing programme in the first, third and sixth semester, at one university in northern Sweden.Method: Data were collected during the 2012–2013 school year by asking the nursing students to complete the sentence, 'I perceive that health is ...'Results: Results indicated that health means a feeling of well-being in both body and mind and that a person is responsible for promoting his or her own health. Promoting good health involved finding a balance between, diet, activity, work and rest. Furthermore, relationships with family and friends were important for experiences of good health. Study participants also commented that a person could feel healthy despite illness.Discussion: Nursing students' perception of the concept of health was multifaceted and based on a holistic and positive attitude. However, the boundary between health and illness was characterised as being unclear, and none of the students' included nursing theory in their descriptions of the concept of health. Conclusion: These findings show that it is important to integrate students' experiences and perceptions into nursing education and theory, to develop a deeper understanding of the concept of health to enhance nursing education.

  • Information and communication technology as a tool to increase accessibility to care
  • 2009
  • Annan publikation (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well established that the industrialized world is witnessing a significant change in the age profile of the population that will challenge the way healthcare is provided to older people. The increased prevalence of healthcare problems and instances of chronic conditions while having less available staff implies that more needs to be done with less resource. It is known that use of information and communication technology (ICT) has been experienced as positive for ill people living at home and their caregivers. eHealth combines the usage of ICT to support the remote monitoring of people with chronic illness in their home environment. This has influenced work of district nurses and has led to the support of such forming an important part of their work. The aim of the study was to describe the experiences of people with chronic illness and assistants who used information and communication technology (ICT) to communicate through picture and sound with the district nurse. A qualitative case study design was chosen and the case comprises one district nurse at a primary healthcare centre and one of her patients, and his assistants. The data collection process included repeated interviews and the district nurse also keeping a logbook. An application of new technology in form of an electronic communication program via a computer with Internet connection was used for communication through picture and sound between the district nurse and the people with chronic illness, their relatives and assistants. The program consists of a virtual room and enables direct communication through use of picture and sound in real time or as saved massages. The communication program enables the people with chronic illness and assistants to get into contact with the district nurse and to communicate about his health status. Data were analysed using content analysis. The results showed that using ICT increased the accessibility to care through the use of picture and sound facility in real time. This was something all the participants experienced as positively. However, the district nurse found it difficult to judge the patient's condition via ICT. It was difficult to make a decision without knowing the patient's prior condition. Nevertheless, all participants felt safe about ICT because the need for accessibility to care related to progression in the case of the chronic illness. In conclusion, the result indicates that information and communication technology increases accessibility to care and nursing for people with serious chronic illness living at home. However, this way of communicating and providing care for these people cannot replace a physical presence, but it could be seen as a complement to nursing care at home. © 2009 The authors and IOS Press.
