  • (087–090) Proposal to treat the use of a hyphen in the name of a fossil-genus as an orthographical error
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Taxon. - : International Association for Plant Taxonomy. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose modifications to the Code such that use of a hyphen in the name of a fossil-genus is treated as an error to be corrected by deletion of the hyphen. This will circumvent the need to conserve the numerous de-hyphenated names against unused hyphenated forms. We propose changes to Art. 60 of the Code to allow this correction, and the addition of a phrase in Art. 20 to add clarity to the naming of fossil-genera.

  • Plantaricin NC8 αβ exerts potent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus spp. and enhances the effects of antibiotics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of conventional antibiotics has substantial clinical efficacy, however these vital antimicrobial agents are becoming less effective due to the dramatic increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Novel approaches to combat bacterial infections are urgently needed and bacteriocins represent a promising alternative. In this study, the activities of the two-peptide bacteriocin PLNC8 αβ were investigated against different Staphylococcus spp. The peptide sequences of PLNC8 α and β were modified, either through truncation or replacement of all L-amino acids with D-amino acids. Both L- and D-PLNC8 αβ caused rapid disruption of lipid membrane integrity and were effective against both susceptible and antibiotic resistant strains. The D-enantiomer was stable against proteolytic degradation by trypsin compared to the L-enantiomer. Of the truncated peptides, β1-22, β7-34 and β1-20 retained an inhibitory activity. The peptides diffused rapidly (2 min) through the bacterial cell wall and permeabilized the cell membrane, causing swelling with a disorganized peptidoglycan layer. Interestingly, sub-MIC concentrations of PLNC8 αβ substantially enhanced the effects of different antibiotics in an additive or synergistic manner. This study shows that PLNC8 αβ is active against Staphylococcus spp. and may be developed as adjuvant in combination therapy to potentiate the effects of antibiotics and reduce their overall use.

  • Cross-layer adaptation for TCP-based applications in WCDMA systems
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we consider TCP-based applications over a high bandwidth wireless channel, such as the High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) channel in aWCDMAsystem, in two setups: a nominal one that employs end-to-end TCPReno and a new one that employs Cross-Layer Adaptation (CLA) in the form of Radio Network Feedback (RNF). For theCLAsetup, the Radio Resource Management unit in the Radio Network Controller (RNC) provides a proxy with reports on the radio link bandwidth and the queue level. The proxy transport layer takes appropriate actions on these reports. By doing so, it utilizes the air-interface spectrum more efficiently and keeps the layer-2 queue in the RNCclose a predetermined level. These new control mechanisms are evaluated through ns-2 simulations. In a number of realistic use cases it is shown that the new CLAsetup reduces the time to serve users, and substantially increases the radio link utilization and decreases the required buffer size in the RNC.

  • Nanocellulose composite wound dressings for real-time pH wound monitoring
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Today Bio. - : Elsevier. - 2590-0064. ; 19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The skin is the largest organ of the human body. Wounds disrupt the functions of the skin and can have catastrophic consequences for an individual resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Wound infections are common and can substantially delay healing and can result in non-healing wounds and sepsis. Early diagnosis and treatment of infection reduce risk of complications and support wound healing. Methods for monitoring of wound pH can facilitate early detection of infection. Here we show a novel strategy for integrating pH sensing capabilities in state-of-the-art hydrogel-based wound dressings fabricated from bacterial nanocellulose (BC). A high surface area material was developed by self-assembly of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) in BC. By encapsulating a pH-responsive dye in the MSNs, wound dressings for continuous pH sensing with spatiotemporal resolution were developed. The pH responsive BC-based nanocomposites demonstrated excellent wound dressing properties, with respect to conformability, mechanical properties, and water vapor transmission rate. In addition to facilitating rapid colorimetric assessment of wound pH, this strategy for generating functional BC-MSN nanocomposites can be further be adapted for encapsulation and release of bioactive compounds for treatment of hard-to-heal wounds, enabling development of novel wound care materials.

  • Self-Assembly of Mechanoplasmonic Bacterial Cellulose-Metal Nanoparticle Composites
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 30:40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanocomposites of metal nanoparticles (NPs) and bacterial nanocellulose (BC) enable fabrication of soft and biocompatible materials for optical, catalytic, electronic, and biomedical applications. Current BC-NP nanocomposites are typically prepared by in situ synthesis of the NPs or electrostatic adsorption of surface functionalized NPs, which limits possibilities to control and tune NP size, shape, concentration, and surface chemistry and influences the properties and performance of the materials. Here a self-assembly strategy is described for fabrication of complex and well-defined BC-NP composites using colloidal gold and silver NPs of different sizes, shapes, and concentrations. The self-assembly process results in nanocomposites with distinct biophysical and optical properties. In addition to antibacterial materials and materials with excellent senor performance, materials with unique mechanoplasmonic properties are developed. The homogenous incorporation of plasmonic gold NPs in the BC enables extensive modulation of the optical properties by mechanical stimuli. Compression gives rise to near-field coupling between adsorbed NPs, resulting in tunable spectral variations and enhanced broadband absorption that amplify both nonlinear optical and thermoplasmonic effects and enables novel biosensing strategies.

  • Differences in neighborhood accessibility to health-related resources : A nationwide comparison between deprived and affluent neighborhoods in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier BV. - 1353-8292 .- 1873-2054. ; 17:1, s. 132-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This nationwide Swedish study used geocoded data from all businesses in Sweden to examine the distribution of 12 main categories of goods, services, and resources in 6986 neighborhoods, categorized as low, moderate, and high neighborhood deprivation. The main findings were that high- and moderate-deprivation neighborhoods had a significantly higher prevalence of all types of goods, services, and resources than low-deprivation neighborhoods. These findings do not support previous research that hypothesizes that poorer health among people in deprived neighborhoods is explained by a lack of health-promoting resources, although a higher presence of health-damaging resources may play a role. • Supporting end-to-end applications over HSDPA by cross-layer signalling
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS & NETWORKING CONFERENCE, VOLS 1-9. - NEW YORK : IEEE. - 9781424406586 ; , s. 3858-3863
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new control structure is proposed to improve user experience of wireless Internet. Information on radio bandwidth and queue length available in the radio network, close to the base station, is used in a proxy that resides between the Internet and the cellular system. The control algorithm in the proxy sets the window size according to event-triggered information on radio bandwidth changes and time-triggered information on the queue length at the wireless link. The mechanism is compared to TCP Reno in two simulation scenarios. The first scenario models a dedicated channel with stepwise changes in the bandwidth, while the second scenario models the High-speed Downlink Shared Channel recently introduced by 3GPP. The proposed mechanism significantly reduces the amount of buffer space needed in the radio network, and it also gives modest improvements to user response time and link utilization. Reduced buffering is particularly beneficial for third-party end-to-end real-time services such as voice, video, and online gaming.

  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 44th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, and the European Control Conference 2005. - : IEEE. - 0780395689 ; , s. 7434-7439
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new control structure is proposed to improve user experience of wireless Internet. Information on radio bandwidth and queue length available in the radio network controller (RNC), close to the base station, is used in a proxy that resides between the Internet and the cellular system. The control algorithm in the proxy sets the window size according to event-triggered information on radio bandwidth changes and time-triggered information on the queue length of the RNC. A stability analysis of the hybrid control system is performed. In a number of realistic use cases evaluated in ns-2, the new control structure is compared to a nominal one that employs end-to-end TCP Reno. It is shown that the proposed solution reduces the time to serve users, increases the radio link utilization, and decreases the required buffer size in the RNC.

  • The impact of family composition on adult earnings
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis addresses to what extent childhood family composition – the number of siblings and whether the parents live together, or whether there are non-parental adults and/or half-siblings in the household or not – contributes to variations in adult earnings. The theoretical perspective suggests that resources mediate the effect. While research has shown that siblings, as well as divorce and remarriage, are negatively linked to child outcomes, there are inconsistencies in previous literature. There has been debate over the unconfoundedness of previous studies, something that is handled here by analyzing large sets of representative data using a robust parameter. The longitudinal dataset used is based on Swedish administrative data and the cohorts analyzed are born in the beginning of the 1970s. The data structure is well suited for the assumptions underlying the semi-parametric method propensity score matching. The findings show that family size impacts on adult earnings. However, this is not always of concern. For example, no effect of siblings is found in affluent families, and if siblings are closely spaced this results in better outcomes for children. Divorce and remarriage do not seem to lower the future earnings of children. Thus, this thesis shows that some of the most well-established patterns in the sociology of the family, namely the link between number of siblings and adult earnings, and between divorce/family re-formation and adult earnings, can be broken by resources.
