  • Genomic insights into the conservation status of the world's last remaining Sumatran rhinoceros populations

    • Small populations are often exposed to high inbreeding and mutational load that can increase the risk of extinction. The Sumatran rhinoceros was widespread in Southeast Asia, but is now restricted to small and isolated populations on Sumatra and Borneo, and most likely extinct on the Malay Peninsula. Here, we analyse 5 historical and 16 modern genomes from these populations to investigate the genomic consequences of the recent decline, such as increased inbreeding and mutational load. We find that the Malay Peninsula population experienced increased inbreeding shortly before extirpation, which possibly was accompanied by purging. The populations on Sumatra and Borneo instead show low inbreeding, but high mutational load. The currently small population sizes may thus in the near future lead to inbreeding depression. Moreover, we find little evidence for differences in local adaptation among populations, suggesting that future inbreeding depression could potentially be mitigated by assisted gene flow among populations.

    • Clovis, with its distinctive biface, blade and osseous technologies, is the oldest widespread archaeological complex defined in North America, dating from 11,100 to 10,700 C-14 years before present (BP) (13,000 to 12,600 calendar years BP)(1,2). Nearly 50 years of archaeological research point to the Clovis complex as having developed south of the North American ice sheets from an ancestral technology(3). However, both the origins and the genetic legacy of the people who manufactured Clovis tools remain under debate. It is generally believed that these people ultimately derived from Asia and were directly related to contemporary Native Americans(2). An alternative, Solutrean, hypothesis posits that the Clovis predecessors emigrated from southwestern Europe during the Last Glacial Maximum(4). Here we report the genome sequence of a male infant (Anzick-1) recovered from the Anzick burial site in western Montana. The human bones date to 10,705 +/- 35 C-14 years BP (approximately 12,707-12,556 calendar years BP) and were directly associated with Clovis tools. We sequenced the genome to an average depth of 14.4x and show that the gene flow from the Siberian Upper Palaeolithic Mal'ta population(5) into Native American ancestors is also shared by the Anzick-1 individual and thus happened before 12,600 years BP. We also show that the Anzick-1 individual is more closely related to all indigenous American populations than to any other group. Our data are compatible with the hypothesis that Anzick-1 belonged to a population directly ancestral to many contemporary Native Americans. Finally, we find evidence of a deep divergence in Native American populations that predates the Anzick-1 individual.

    • Encoder-decoder design is considered for a closed-loop scalar control system with feedback transmitted over a binary symmetric channel. We propose an iterative procedure which can jointly optimize adaptive encoder-decoder pairs for a certainly equivalence controller. The goal is to minimize a design criterion, in particular, the linear quadratic (LQ) cost function over a finite horizon. The algorithm leads to a practically feasible design of time-varying non-uniform encoding and decoding. Numerical results demonstrate the promising performance obtained by employing the proposed iterative optimization algorithm.

    • The self-assembly in SOS-rich mixtures of the anionic surfactant sodium octyl sulfate (SOS) and the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) has been investigated with the complementary techniques small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). Both techniques confirm the simultaneous presence of open and closed bilayer structures in highly diluted samples as well as the existence of small globular and large elongated micelles at higher concentrations. However, the two techniques sometimes differ with respect to which type of aggregates is present in a particular sample. In particular, globular or wormlike micelles are sometimes observed with cryo-TEM in the vicinity of the micelle-to-bilayer transition, although only bilayers are present according to SANS and the samples appear bluish to the eye. A similar discrepancy has previously been reported but could not be satisfactorily rationalized. On the basis of our comparison between in situ (SANS) and ex situ (cryo-TEM) experimental techniques, we suggest that this discrepancy appears mainly as a result of the non-negligible amount of surfactant adsorbed at interfaces of the thin sample film created during the cryo-TEM specimen preparation. Moreover, from our detailed SANS data analysis, we are able to observe the unusually high amount of free surfactant monomers present in SOS-rich mixtures of SOS and CTAB, and the experimental results give excellent agreement with model calculations based on the Poisson-Boltzmann mean field theory. Our careful comparison between model calculations and experiments has enabled us to rationalize the dramatic microstructural transformations frequently observed upon simply diluting mixtures of an anionic and a cationic surfactant.

    • The influence of adding salt on the self-assembly in sodium octyl sulfate (SOS)-rich mixtures of the anionic surfactant SOS and the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) have been investigated with the two complementary techniques, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and cryo-transmission electron microscopy. We are able to conclude that addition of a substantial amount of inert salt, NaBr, mainly has three effects on the structural behaviors: (i) the micelles become much larger at the transition from micelles to bilayers, (ii) the fraction of bilayer disks increases at the expense of vesicles, and (iii) bilayer aggregates perforated with holes are formed in the most diluted samples. A novel form factor valid for perforated bilayer vesicles and disks is introduced for the first time and, as a result, we are able to directly observe the presence of perforated bilayers by means of fitting SANS data with an appropriate model. Moreover, we are able to conclude that the morphology of bilayer aggregates changes according to the following sequence of different bilayer topologies, vesicles --> disks --> perforated bilayers, as the electrolyte concentration is increased and surfactant mole fraction in the bilayer aggregates approaches equimolarity. We are able to rationalize this sequence of transitions as a result of a monotonous increase of the bilayer saddle-splay constant ((k) over bar (bi)(c)) with decreasing influence from electrostatics, in agreement with theoretical predictions as deduced from the Poisson-Boltzmann theory.

    • Self-assembly in aqueous mixtures of a single-chain (DTAB) and a double-chain cationic surfactant (DDAB) has been investigated with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Small oblate spheroidal micelles formed by DTAB grow with respect to width and length to form mixed ellipsoidal tablet-shaped micelles as an increasing fraction of DDAB is admixed into the micelles. The growth behaviour of the micelles is rationalized from the general micelle model in terms of three bending elasticity constants spontaneous curvature (H-0), bending rigidity (k(c)) and saddle-splay constant ((k(c)) over bar kc). It is found that micelles grow with respect to width, mainly as a result of decreasing k(c)H(0), and in the length direction as a result of decreasing k(c). The micelles are still rather small, i.e. about 140 angstrom in length, as an abrupt transition to large bilayer aggregates is observed. The micelle-to-bilayer transition is induced by changes in aggregate composition and is observed to occur at a mole fraction of DDAB equal to about x = 0.48 in D2O, which is a significantly higher value than previously observed for the same system in H2O (x = 0.41). An abrupt micelle-to-bilayer transition is in agreement with predictions from the general micelle model, according to which an abrupt transition from micelles to bilayers is expected to occur at xi H-0 = 1/4, where x is the thickness of the self-assembled interface, and we may conclude that H-0(D2O) > H-0(H2O) for the system DDAB/DTAB in absence of added salt. Samples with bilayers are found to be composed of bilayer disks coexisting with vesicles. Disks are found to always predominate over vesicles with mass fractions about 70-90% disks and 10-30% vesicles. Micelles, disks and vesicles are observed to coexist in a few samples close to the micelle-to-bilayer transition.

    • The issue of protein dynamics and its implications in the biological function of proteins are arousing greater and greater interest in different fields of molecular biology. In cryo-electron tomography experiments one may take several snapshots of a given biological macromolecule. In principle, a large enough collection of snapshots of the molecule may then be used to calculate its equilibrium configuration in terms of the experimentally accessible degrees of freedom and, hence, to estimate its potential energy. This information would be crucial in order to analyze the biological functions of biomolecules by directly accessing the relevant dynamical indicators. In this article, we analyze the results of cryo-electron tomography experiments performed on monoclonal murine IgG2a antibodies. We measure the equilibrium distribution of the molecule in terms of the relevant angular coordinates and build a mechanical model of the antibody dynamics. This approach enables us to derive an explicit expression of the IgG potential energy. Furthermore, we discuss the configuration space at equilibrium in relation to results from other techniques, and we set our discussion in the context of the current debate regarding conformation and flexibility of antibodies.

    • This document describes the research activity in multi-node/multi-antenna technologies within METIS and positions it with respect to the state-of-the-art in the academic literature and in the standardization bodies. Based on the state-of-the-art and as well as on the METIS objectives,we set the research objectives and we group the different activities (or technology components) into research clusters with similar research objectives. The technologycomponents and the research objectives have been set to achieve an ambidextrous purpose. On one side we aim at providing the METIS system with those technological components that are a natural but non-trivial evolution of 4G. On the other side, we aim at seeking for disruptivetechnologies that could radically change 5G with respect to 4G. Moreover, we mapped the different technology components to METIS’ other activities and to the overall goals of theproject.

  • Left-sided valvular heart disease and survival in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a nationwide registry-based study.

    • Survival in left-sided valvular heart disease (VHD; aortic stenosis [AS], aortic regurgitation [AR], mitral stenosis [MS], mitral regurgitation [MR]) in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is unknown. We studied all cases of OHCA in the Swedish Registry for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. All degrees of VHD, diagnosed prior to OHCA, were included. Association between VHD and survival was studied using logistic regression, gradient boosting and Cox regression. We studied time to cardiac arrest, comorbidities, survival, and cerebral performance category (CPC) score. We included 55,615 patients; 1948 with AS (3,5%), 384 AR (0,7%), 17 MS (0,03%), and 704 with MR (1,3%). Patients with MS were not described due to low case number. Time from VHD diagnosis to cardiac arrest was 3.7years in AS, 4.5years in AR and 4.1years in MR. ROSC occurred in 28% with AS, 33% with AR, 36% with MR and 35% without VHD. Survival at 30days was 5.2%, 10.4%, 9.2%, 11.4% in AS, AR, MR and without VHD, respectively. There were no survivors in people with AS presenting with asystole or PEA. CPC scores did not differ in those with VHD compared with no VHD. Odds ratio (OR) for MR and AR showed no difference in survival, while AS displayed OR 0.58 (95% CI 0.46-0.72), vs no VHD. AS is associated with halved survival in OHCA, while AR and MR do not affect survival. Survivors with AS have neurological outcomes comparable to patients without VHD.

    • Background: Genotoxicity is an important toxicological endpoint due to the link to diseases such as cancer. Therefore, an increased understanding regarding genotoxicity and underlying mechanisms is needed for assessing the risk with exposure to nanoparticles (NPs). The aim of this study was to perform an in-depth investigation regarding the genotoxicity of well-characterized Ni and NiO NPs in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells and to discern possible mechanisms. Comparisons were made with NiCl2 in order to elucidate effects of ionic Ni. Methods: BEAS-2B cells were exposed to Ni and NiO NPs, as well as NiCl2, and uptake and cellular dose were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The NPs were characterized in terms of surface composition (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), agglomeration (photon cross correlation spectroscopy) and nickel release in cell medium (ICP-MS). Cell death (necrosis/apoptosis) was investigated by Annexin VFITC/PI staining and genotoxicity by cytokinesis-block micronucleus (cytome) assay (OECD 487), chromosomal aberration (OECD 473) and comet assay. The involvement of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and calcium was explored using the fluorescent probes, DCFH-DA and Fluo-4. Results: NPs were efficiently taken up by the BEAS-2B cells. In contrast, no or minor uptake was observed for ionic Ni from NiCl2. Despite differences in uptake, all exposures (NiO, Ni NPs and NiCl2) caused chromosomal damage. Furthermore, NiO NPs were most potent in causing DNA strand breaks and generating intracellular ROS. An increase in intracellular calcium was observed and modulation of intracellular calcium by using inhibitors and chelators clearly prevented the chromosomal damage. Chelation of iron also protected against induced damage, particularly for NiO and NiCl2. Conclusions: This study has revealed chromosomal damage by Ni and NiO NPs as well as Ni ionic species and provides novel evidence for a calcium-dependent mechanism of cyto- and genotoxicity.

Furthermore, it identifies the most promising technologies based on the current state of obtained results. This document provides a brief overview of the results in its first part. The second part, namely the Appendix, further details the results, describes the simulation alignment efforts conducted in the Work Package and the interaction of the Test Cases. The results described here show that the investigations conducted in Work Package 3 are maturing resulting in valuable innovative solutions for future 5G systems.

    • BACKGROUND/AIM: Gastric bypass (GB) is usually designed to restrict food intake and to induce malabsorption. Gastric hormones have been thought to play a role in the regulation of food intake and body weight. The aim of the present study was to analyze feeding behavior after total gastrectomy (Gx) or GB in rats. METHODS: Animals were subjected to Gx, GB, or sham operations. Eating and drinking behaviors after surgeries were assessed by a comprehensive laboratory animal monitoring system. Gastric hormones were measured by radioimmunoassay and energy density in feces by adiabatic bomb calorimeter. RESULTS: Compared with sham operation, both Gx and GB reduced the body weight as measured during 3-8 weeks postoperatively, which was associated with increased energy expenditure per 100 g body weight. Daily accumulated food intake and meal size (during nighttime) were reduced following Gx, but not GB. The water intake (during daytime) was increased after Gx and GB. The energy density in feces was unchanged. Serum concentrations of ghrelin, obestatin, leptin, gastrin, and pancreastatin were greatly reduced after Gx. CONCLUSIONS: Control of food intake and meal size was independent of the food reservoir function of the stomach. Surgical depletion of gastric hormones is associated with reduced meal size, but increased water intake.

    • A major challenge in today's molecular biology research is to understand the interaction between proteins at the molecular level. Cryo-electron tomography (ET) has come to play an important role in facilitating objective qualitative experiments on protein structures and their interaction. Various protein conformation structures can be qualitatively analysed as complete galleries of proteins are captured by ET. To facilitate fast and objective macromolecular structure analysis procedures, image processing has become a crucial tool. This paper presents an image processing system for localising individual proteins from in vitro samples imaged by ET. We have evaluated the system using simulated data as well as experimental data.

    • Silver (Ag) nanoparticles are commonly used in consumer products due to their antimicrobial properties. Here we studied the impact of Ag nanoparticles on immune responses by using cell lines of monocyte/macrophage and lung epithelial cell origin, respectively. Short-term experiments (24 h) showed that Ag nanoparticles reduced the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in THP-1 cells under serum-free conditions. ICP-MS analysis revealed that cellular uptake of Ag was higher under these conditions. Long-term exposure (up to 6 weeks) of BEAS-2B cells to Ag nanoparticles also suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokine production following a brief challenge with LPS. Experiments using reporter cells revealed that Ag nanoparticles as well as AgNO3 inhibited LPS-triggered Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling. Furthermore, RNA-sequencing of BEAS-2B cells indicated that Ag nanoparticles affected TLR signaling pathways. In conclusion, Ag nanoparticles reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to LPS, likely as a result of the release of silver ions leading to an interference with TLR signaling. This could have implications for the use of Ag nanoparticles as antibacterial agents. Further in vivo studies are warranted to study this.

    • Background: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are currently one of the most manufactured nanomaterials. A wide range of toxicity studies have been performed on various AgNPs, but these studies report a high variation in toxicity and often lack proper particle characterization. The aim of this study was to investigate size-and coating-dependent toxicity of thoroughly characterized AgNPs following exposure of human lung cells and to explore the mechanisms of toxicity. Methods: BEAS-2B cells were exposed to citrate coated AgNPs of different primary particle sizes (10, 40 and 75 nm) as well as to 10 nm PVP coated and 50 nm uncoated AgNPs. The particle agglomeration in cell medium was investigated by photon cross correlation spectroscopy (PCCS); cell viability by LDH and Alamar Blue assay; ROS induction by DCFH-DA assay; genotoxicity by alkaline comet assay and gamma H(2)AX foci formation; uptake and intracellular localization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM); and cellular dose as well as Ag release by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results: The results showed cytotoxicity only of the 10 nm particles independent of surface coating. In contrast, all AgNPs tested caused an increase in overall DNA damage after 24 h assessed by the comet assay, suggesting independent mechanisms for cytotoxicity and DNA damage. However, there was no gamma H(2)AX foci formation and no increased production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). The reasons for the higher toxicity of the 10 nm particles were explored by investigating particle agglomeration in cell medium, cellular uptake, intracellular localization and Ag release. Despite different agglomeration patterns, there was no evident difference in the uptake or intracellular localization of the citrate and PVP coated AgNPs. However, the 10 nm particles released significantly more Ag compared with all other AgNPs (approx. 24 wt% vs. 4-7 wt%) following 24 h in cell medium. The released fraction in cell medium did not induce any cytotoxicity, thus implying that intracellular Ag release was responsible for the toxicity. Conclusions: This study shows that small AgNPs (10 nm) are cytotoxic for human lung cells and that the toxicity observed is associated with the rate of intracellular Ag release, a 'Trojan horse' effect.

    • Background: Takotsubo syndrome (TS) is an acute heart failure condition that presents with symptoms similar to acute myocardial infarction. TS is often triggered by emotional or physical stress and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality but predictors of mortality in TS patients are not well understood. There is a need to identify high-risk patients and tailor treatment accordingly.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the importance of various clinical factors in predicting 30-day mortality in TS patients using a machine-learning algorithm capable of identifying complex relationships between variables.Methods: We analyzed data from the nationwide Swedish Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty Registry for all TS patients between 2015-2022. Gradient boosting was used to assess the relative importance of variables in predicting 30-day mortality in TS patients.Results: Of the 3,180 hospitalized TS patients, 76% were women. The average age was 68.3 ± 11.2 years. The crude all-cause mortality rate was 2.57% at 30 days. The most important variable in predicting 30-day mortality was the hospital where the patient was treated, with a relative importance of 35.5%. This was followed by the clinical presentation for angiography (21.1%), creatinine level (11.9%), Killip class (8.9%), and age at angioplasty (6.5%). Other less important factors included weight, height, and certain medical conditions such as hyperlipidemia, smoking status, and hypertension. Gender and previous stroke history had a low impact on 30-day mortality in TS patients.Conclusions: The treating hospital was the most important factor in predicting 30-day mortality in TS. Since the level of evidence for recommended treatments of TS is low, our findings highlight the importance of conducting randomized studies in this patient group to improve care.

    • Objective When the COVID-19 pandemic reached Norway, primary health care had to reorganize to ensure safe patient treatment and maintain infection control. General practitioners (GPs) are key health care providers in the municipalities. Our aim was to explore the experiences and management strategies of Norwegian GPs during the COVID-19 pandemic - over time, and in the context of a sudden organizational change. Design Longitudinal qualitative interview study with two interview rounds. The first round of interviews was conducted from September-December 2020, the second round from January-April 2021. In the first interview round, we performed eight semi-structured interviews with GPs from eight municipalities in Norway. In the second round, five of the GPs were re-interviewed. Consecutive interviews were performed 2-4 months apart. To analyze the data, we used thematic analysis. Results The COVID-19 pandemic required GPs to balance several concerns, such as continuity of care and their own professional efforts. Several GPs experienced challenges in the collaboration with the municipality and in relation to defining their own professional position. Guided by The Norwegian Association of General practitioners, The Norwegian College of General Practice and collegial support, they found viable solutions and ended up with a feeling of having adapted to a new normal. Conclusions Although our study demonstrates that the GPs adapted to the changing conditions, the current municipal health care models are not ideal. There is a need for clarification of responsibilities between GPs and the municipality to facilitate a more coordinated future pandemic response.

  • Impact of functional group types in ion exchange resins on rare earth element recovery from treated acid mine waters

    • Ion-exchange (IX) resins incorporating single functional groups (sulfonic or amino-phosphonic) and two functional groups (sulfonic and phosphonic) were evaluated for selective recovery of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from acidic mine waters (AMW). The composition of AMW solution, complexing properties of the functional group, and acidity were investigated as key parameters for concentration and separation of REEs from transition elements (TEs). Fe has to be removed from AMW to enable REE recovery and here the AMW was treated with NaOH solutions to reach pH 3.9 where Fe(III) was selectively removed (≤99%) by precipitation of schwertmannite. Single functional IX resin containing a sulfonic group displayed a higher REE recovery efficiency and separation ratio than observed for the bi-functional resin (sulfonic/phosphonic). Concentration factors for REEs between 30 and 40 were achieved using regeneration cycles with H2SO4. The performance of the aminophosphonic resin showed lower separation factors for REEs from TEs than the two resins containing sulfonic groups. IX resins performance was improved by tuning the acidity to match the functional group reactivity, where pH adjustment to the range of 0.5–2.0 provided the highest REE/TE separation factor for the single sulfonic resin followed by the bifunctional resin. The integration of an elution cycle using Na2-EDTA/NH4Cl mixtures strongly increases the concentration factors of REE and Light REE (LREE) concentration factors of up to 260 were achieved for the single functional sulfonic resin.

  • Systematic evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 antigens enables a highly specific and sensitive multiplex serological COVID-19 assay

    • Objective. The COVID-19 pandemic poses an immense need for accurate, sensitive and high-throughput clinical tests, and serological assays are needed for both overarching epidemiological studies and evaluating vaccines. Here, we present the development and validation of a high-throughput multiplex bead-based serological assay. Methods. More than 100 representations of SARS-CoV-2 proteins were included for initial evaluation, including antigens produced in bacterial and mammalian hosts as well as synthetic peptides. The five best-performing antigens, three representing the spike glycoprotein and two representing the nucleocapsid protein, were further evaluated for detection of IgG antibodies in samples from 331 COVID-19 patients and convalescents, and in 2090 negative controls sampled before 2020. Results. Three antigens were finally selected, represented by a soluble trimeric form and the S1-domain of the spike glycoprotein as well as by the C-terminal domain of the nucleocapsid. The sensitivity for these three antigens individually was found to be 99.7%, 99.1% and 99.7%, and the specificity was found to be 98.1%, 98.7% and 95.7%. The best assay performance was although achieved when utilising two antigens in combination, enabling a sensitivity of up to 99.7% combined with a specificity of 100%. Requiring any two of the three antigens resulted in a sensitivity of 99.7% and a specificity of 99.4%. Conclusion. These observations demonstrate that a serological test based on a combination of several SARS-CoV-2 antigens enables a highly specific and sensitive multiplex serological COVID-19 assay.

    • BackgroundAccess to testing during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was limited, impacting patients with COVID-19-like symptoms. Current qualitative studies have been limited to one country or were conducted outside Europe.ObjectivesTo explore - in eight European countries - the experiences of patients consulting in primary care with COVID-19-like symptoms during the first wave of the pandemic.MethodsSixty-six semi-structured interviews, informed by a topic guide, were conducted by telephone or in person between April and July 2020. Patients with COVID-19-like symptoms were purposively recruited in primary care sites in eight countries and sampled based on age, gender, and symptom presentation. Deductive and inductive thematic analysis techniques were used to develop a framework representing data across settings. Data adequacy was attained by collecting rich data.ResultsSeven themes were identified, which described the experiences of patients consulting. Two themes are reported in this manuscript describing the role of COVID-19 testing in this experience. Patients described significant distress due to their symptoms, especially those at higher risk of complications from COVID-19, and those with severe symptoms. Patients wanted access to testing to identify the cause of their illness and minimise the burden of managing uncertainty. Some patients testing positive for COVID-19 assumed they would be immune from future infection.ConclusionPatients experiencing novel and severe symptoms, particularly those with comorbidities, experienced a significant emotional and psychological burden due to concerns about COVID-19. Testing provided reassurance over health status and helped patients identify which guidance to follow. Testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 led to some patients thinking they were immune from future infection, thus influencing subsequent behaviour.

  • Human micronutrient provision by seagrass fisheries outperform coral reefs in a malnourished region

    • Blue foods can help tackle hunger by providing rich sources of micronutrients such as calcium, iron, and zinc. Here, we used a novel index of nutrient multifunctionality to assess the micronutrient contributions of fish species across key components of the tropical seascape along a 3000-km stretch of coastline in East Africa. We found that micronutrient multifunctionality varied significantly throughout the tropical seascape, and that the average seagrass-associated fish is more nutritious than a reef-associated fish. The role of seagrass meadows in provisioning high levels of multiple micronutrients relative to coral reefs becomes substantial when we subset the fish communities to include only those species that are high value and targeted in the region. Key fisheries species were far more likely to occur in seagrass meadows than on coral reefs, including those that are both fished and protected, which, when coupled with overall higher per capita micronutrient content, positions seagrass meadows as an unrecognized reservoir of micronutrients to support human health.

    • The agglomeration characteristics of olivine- and potassium (K)-rich grape marc or silicon (Si)-rich wheat straw were studied in a laboratory-scale fluidized reactor and compared under air combustion, steam gasification, or CO2 gasification atmospheres at temperatures relevant to a dual fluidized bed gasifier. Agglomeration with grape marc is found to be induced mostly by the formation of adhesive K-rich layers onto the olivine, a process that is significantly augmented in a steam atmosphere compared to that in the air or CO2. The formation of an initial K-rich outer layer, which is caused by the mere physical attachment of K-species onto the olivine surface, facilitated the formation of an inner layer. This inner layer exhibits chemical reactions between grape marc ash and olivine, with the ash elements involved in the chemical reactions differing between combustion and steam gasification environments. Agglomeration with a wheat straw is most significant under air combustion conditions and depends primarily on the temperature rather than on the atmosphere.

    • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability among young persons. A key to improve outcome for patients with TBI is to reduce the time from injury to definitive care by achieving high triage accuracy. Microwave technology (MWT) allows for a portable device to be used in the pre-hospital setting for detection of intracranial hematomas at the scene of injury, thereby enhancing early triage and allowing for more adequate early care. MWT has previously been evaluated for medical applications including the ability to differentiate between hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. The purpose of this study was to test whether MWT in conjunction with a diagnostic mathematical algorithm could be used as a medical screening tool to differentiate patients with traumatic intracranial hematomas, chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH), from a healthy control (HC) group. Twenty patients with cSDH and 20 HC were measured with a MWT device. The accuracy of the diagnostic algorithm was assessed using a leave-one-out analysis. At 100% sensitivity, the specificity was 75%-i.e., all hematomas were detected at the cost of 25% false positives (patients who would be overtriaged). Considering the need for methods to identify patients with intracranial hematomas in the pre-hospital setting, MWT shows promise as a tool to improve triage accuracy. Further studies are under way to evaluate MWT in patients with other intracranial hemorrhages.

    • Estrogen is involved in both normal mammary development and in breast carcinogenesis. A family history of disease and exposure to estrogen are major risk factors for developing breast cancer. Estrogen exerts its biological effects through binding to the estrogen receptors, estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1) and the more recently discovered estrogen receptor beta (ESR2). Genetic variation in genes involved in estrogen biosynthesis, metabolism and signal transduction have been suggested to play a role in breast cancer risk. We therefore tested the hypothesis that common genetic variants of the ESR2 gene may be associated with increased risk for breast cancer and this risk may vary between breast cancer groups. We investigated three common ESR2 polymorphisms, rs1256049 (G1082A), rs4986938 (G1730A) and rs928554 (Cx+56 A?G) for association to breast cancer risk. A total of 723 breast cancer cases and 480 controls were included in the study. Of the breast cancer cases, 323 were sporadic and 400 were familial, the familial cases were further divided into familial high-risk and familial low-risk breast cancer cases. We found no overall statistically significant association for any of the single polymorphisms studied. Haplotype analysis suggested one haplotype associated with increased risk in sporadic breast cancer patients (OR = 3.0, p = 0.03). Further analysis is needed to elucidate the role of estrogen receptor beta in breast cancer susceptibility. © Springer 2005.

    • Climate change predictions indicate that coastal and estuarine environments will receive increased terrestrial runoff via increased river discharge. This discharge transports allochthonous material, containing bioavailable nutrients and light attenuating matter. Since light and nutrients are important drivers of basal production, their relative and absolute availability have important consequences for the base of the aquatic food web, with potential ramifications for higher trophic levels. Here, we investigated the effects of shifts in terrestrial organic matter and light availability on basal producers and their grazers. In twelve Baltic Sea mesocosms, we simulated the effects of increased river runoff alone and in combination. We manipulated light (clear/shade) and carbon (added/not added) in a fully factorial design, with three replicates. We assessed microzooplankton grazing preferences in each treatment to assess whether increased terrestrial organic matter input would: (1) decrease the phytoplankton to bacterial biomass ratio, (2) shift microzooplanlcton diet from phytoplankton to bacteria, and (3) affect microzooplankton biomass. We found that carbon addition, but not reduced light levels per se resulted in lower phytoplanlcton to bacteria biomass ratios. Microzooplankton generally showed a strong feeding preference for phytoplanlcton over bacteria, but, in carbon-amended mesocosms which favored bacteria, microzooplankton shifted their diet towards bacteria. Furthermore, low total prey availability corresponded with low microzooplankton biomass and the highest bacteria/phytoplankton ratio. Overall our results suggest that in shallow coastal waters, modified with allochthonous matter from river discharge, light attenuation may be inconsequential for the basal producer balance, whereas increased allochthonous carbon, especially if readily bioavailable, favors bacteria over phytoplankton. We conclude that climate change induced shifts at the base of the food web may alter energy mobilization to and the biomass of microzooplankton grazers.

    • Electron tomography of vitreous tissue sections (tissue TOVIS) allows the study of the three-dimensional structure of molecular complexes in a near-native cellular context. Its usage is, however, limited by an unfortunate combination of noisy and incomplete data, by a technically demanding sample preparation procedure, and by a disposition for specimen degradation during data collection. Here we outline some major challenges as experienced from the application of TOVIS to human skin. We further consider a number of practical measures as well as theoretical approaches for its future development.

    • Wind power is expanding in Sweden as in many other countries. Varying wind power production may be a challenge for the electric power system to balance due to the intermittency. The paper studies three future scenarios of wind power expansion in Sweden and relates that to the current system power reserves located in each congestion area. Production from existing wind farms has been used to simulate future wind power production and variations. The variations that will be the largest challenge to handle are found in area four in South of Sweden, with small power reserves, big wind power expansion plans, small transmission capacity, and a limited smoothing effect due to the small area.

    • Background: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in severe psychological, social, and economic stress. Countries applied different anti-pandemic strategies that substantially impacted citizens' psychosocial stress and health. Takotsubo syndrome (TS) is frequently triggered by emotional stress. Previous studies from the USA have reported a severalfold increase in TS incidence during pandemics.Purpose: To determine the incidence and outcomes of TS in Sweden before (2015-March 2020) and during (April 2020-December 2022) the pandemic.Methods: We assessed the incidence rate ratio (IRR) for all patients with TS referred for coronary angiography in Sweden using the nationwide Swedish Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty Registry. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) before and during the pandemic were calculated with Poisson regression adjusted for age and sex. We evaluated mortality with multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression, which accounted for clustering of patients within hospitals. The following variables were used for adjustment: age, sex, diabetes, smoking status, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, previous myocardial infarction, and Killip class.Results: We identified 3,180 patients (2,128 [76.0%] women) hospitalized with TS during the study period; 2,189 (69%) pre-pandemic and 991 (31%) during the pandemic. The average age was 68.3 ± 11.2 years. The median follow-up time was 1250 days (IQR 562-1995). The crude all-cause mortality rate was 2.57% at 30 days and 15.5% after long-term follow-up. The incidence of TS was 11% lower during the pandemic compared with the pre-pandemic period (IRR 0.90, 95% CI 0.83-0.98, P=0.009, Fig. 1). We found no difference in 30-day mortality (adjusted HR 1.12, 95% CI 0.69-1.78, P= 0.642) or long-term mortality (adjusted HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.73-1.28, P= 0.816) among patients with TS between the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. When only data after 2016 are used, we found no difference in TS incidence (IRR 1.00, 95% CI 0.92-1.08, P=1.00).Conclusions: In this observational study, the incidence of TS was lower during than before the pandemic but mortality was unchanged. The lower incidence of TS could be related to the specific anti-pandemic strategies applied at the national level in Sweden.

    • In this paper, a multi-user multi-relay network with wireless energy harvesting (EH) and transferring (ET) is studied. In our system, a simultaneous two-level cooperation, i.e., information-level and energy-level cooperation is conducted for uplink data transmissions (from the users to a destination). Specifically, network coding is employed at the relays to facilitate the information-level cooperation; meanwhile, ET is adopted to share the harvested energy among the users for the energy-level cooperation. The energy minimization problem that takes into account the energy causality and outage probability constraints is formulated. However, the optimization problem is non-convex and hard to be solved directly. Alternatively, an approximation technique is adopted to convert it into a convex one. By solving the convex problem, efficient power allocation and ET policies are designed. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve a near-optimal performance and outperforms the state of arts.
