  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science. - : IOP Publishing. - 1755-1307 .- 1755-1315.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. The reverse supply chain has gained increased attention across industries due to the high product return rates. Many strategic and economic benefits can be reaped by efficiently managing the reverse supply chain, such as; cost reduction and enhanced environmental performance. Despite the acknowledgement of the available advantages that can be reaped, there is an overall lack of academic research concerning performance metrics, in particular KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), that can help in managing reverse supply chains. Moreover, industry-specific KPIs have not been explored thoroughly. The apparel industry is currently plagued by high return rates, which suggests that it is even more important for clothing retailers to look over their reverse supply chains. The conceptual framework presented in this report seeks to diminish the gap in literature and provide clothing retailers with KPIs with a focus on environmental sustainability that can help in the decision-making process. The framework is expected to promote sustainability as a more central decision-making criterion within reverse supply chains, especially within the apparel industry.

  • Intelligent Model for the Reliability of the Non-Intrusive Continuous Sensors Used for the Detection of Fouling-Layer in Heat Exchanger System
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences (Switzerland). - : MDPI AG. - 2076-3417. ; 13:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Faults in this sensor must be detected on time to ensure the functionality of the entire system’s architecture and to maintain system balance, which will keep false positive rates low during the system’s operational period. False positives reduce diagnostic confidence and necessitate unnecessary and costly mitigation actions, lowering system productivity. It is on this basis that this study proposes a clustering model algorithm (K-mean clustering) to investigate and manage the reliability and performance of the sensors. The results from the implementation of the K-mean clustering method show that the running of the algorithm fits the model correctly, both for the training of the dataset and for the prediction of the cluster in each of the datasets considered. A reasonable grouping was found for the two and three clusters considered, which are represented by the colors (blue, orange, and green). These colors indicate the fault state, non-fault state, normal state, and abnormal state of the non-intrusive continuous sensor. The simulated results show the fault state in the blue region and the non-fault state in the orange region for the two clusters, while the normal state is in the blue region and the abnormal state is in the orange and green regions for the three clusters considered.

  • Significance of Sustainable Packaging: A Case-Study from a Supply Chain Perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied System Innovation. - : MDPI AG. - 2571-5577. ; 5:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present case study-based research provides insights of the current packaging practices with a supply chain perspective and proposed sustainable packaging options that would cut down the environmental impact from supply chain operations at Midas Safety. The case study is based on qualitative research that used semi-structured open-ended interviews and observations to understand the current processes of the packaging and supply chain department of Midas Safety and how they are planning to adapt sustainability to their processes. Considering the current packaging practices, the study aimed to develop improved sustainable packaging practices with a supply chain aspect in order to cut down the negative environmental aspect such as standardization in packaging for all customers, elimination of wood pallets, developing local suppliers, change in packaging design, making the packaging more compact and lightweight, reducing carbon footprint and fuel consumption by encouraging trade through sea instead of air. The results concluded that internal factors such as alternate packaging material (like Mondi’s Aegispaper, Arjowiggins’ and Corrugated Bubble Wrap) along with the suggested sustainable packaging practices discussed above and external factors such as availability of local vendors are important requirements for successful sustainable packaging development.

  • Supporting Management Disciplines for Research and Development in Public Organizations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Processes. - : MDPI AG. - 2227-9717. ; 10:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In practice, R&D in public organizations in developing countries is confronted with a variety of failures related to supporting management disciplines. The primary goal of this study is to address this issue through multiple-criteria decision making, which includes the DANP (DEMATEL-based ANP) approach. The DANP approach helps to resolve the classification issue that arises as a result of interdependence and feedback characteristics among the capabilities related to supporting management disciplines, allowing weak capabilities to be prioritized based on their interdependence. In the case of criteria weighting, the empirical result in terms of the degree of the net causal relationship had a greater influence on other criteria; however, in terms of dimensions, the technology management process capability had a greater significance on other dimensions, while the innovation management process capability had the least significance on other dimensions. The studies were based on relevant capabilities under a generic perspective so as to oppose country-specific reviews. However, for empirical testing, the proposed framework needs to fit into a country-specific context. According to specific conditions, Pakistan is considered as a case of empirical testing, providing the experts from the multidisciplinary field of science and technology with robust professional credentials in managing multi-mission R&D from public organizations.

    • © 2019, World Academy of Research in Science and Engineering. All rights reserved. Microfinance can play important role in alleviating poverty. Most marginal people have intention and capability to start small revenue generating activities. However, they are lack of finance to materialize their dreams. Microfinance may be one of the way for potential small entrepreneurs to acquire necessary inputs to start their activities. Government and international agencies are trying to eliminate poverty through microfinance programs, services and guidelines. This effort may be able to generate revenue and new jobs that can eradicate poverty. With this concept, Microfinance had been hosted primarily in Bangladesh and later replicated in other part of the world. Grameen Bank (GB) has been serving large number of people below poverty level in Bangladesh. However, both positive and negative impacts of microfinance on poverty have been visible in several studies that make microfinance still questionable. Therefore, this study intent to construct Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measuring the incidence and intensity of the poverty among GB borrowers. It compares MPI of participant borrowers with non-participant borrowers of GB for observing the effect of microfinance. The results show that microfinance has positive impacts for participant borrowers as their index is relatively lower compared to non-participant borrowers. Hence, microfinance appears as an effective instrument for poverty alleviation.

    • © 2019, Sciedu Press. Poverty is a threat to the world. In its extreme form at any part of the world, it will make endanger rest of the world. In fact, it is the source of crime and the worst form of violence. The poor people do not commit any crime but they get punishment out of being bom as a poor that is not controllable in then hand. Microfinance has been designed to eliminate poverty and help marginal and poor people through small income generating activities. The borrowers need capital to materialize their dream, may be in a small amount and microfinance can play important role in this scenario. Through microfinance. small entrepreneurs may acquire necessary inputs to start their business. Both local governments and international agencies are trying to eliminate poverty through microfinance programs, services and guidelines. With this concept. Microfinance has been hosted primarily in Bangladesh. Grameen Bank (GB) has been serving large number of people below poverty level in Bangladesh. However, impact of microfinance is still questionable in several studies. Microfinance used properly and returned back to the lender with stipulated amount and time shows its working effectively for poverty alleviation. Otherwise, there must be loan default and the whole system may be in question. We survey with questionnaire to find out factors contributing to loan default among GB borrowers using binomial logistic regression. The results showed that some factors were crucial for loan default and should be treated properly at the start of lending.

  • Ingår i: Research in World Economy. - : Sciedu Press. - 1923-3981 .- 1923-399X. ; 10:3, s. 263-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019, Sciedu Press. Microfinance is a tool designed for poverty alleviation by providing financial services more specifically small credit to the poor household for income generating activities. One of the better ways to help poor people for poverty alleviation is through giving them financial services that cannot be done in traditional banking system. However, there is a big question whether it is possible to provide those services for a financial institution without being sustainable financially. How far it can go with free lunch that is depending on donors' fluid. These two patterns place microfinance at the intersection. One may wonder whether the microfinance compromises a trade-offbetween serving the poor as social objective and attaining financial sustainability as financial objective. If microfinance institute wishes to get financial sustainability through profit maximization rather ignoring intended social objective of alleviating poverty, than it loses its momentum and becomes like other traditional financial institute. Fulfilling social objective with financial sustainability will be the optimum outcome of microfinance. Microfinance has been pioneered primarily in Bangladesh and later replicated in rest of the world. By this time, over 33 million of clients are being served (with various financial and non-financial services by over 700 registered microfinance institute in Bangladesh. This study intent to measure the social outreach versus financial sustainability of microfinance institute in Bangladesh through panel data analysis. To do this, we have analyzed the relationship between financial performance and depth of outreach of top 20 microfinance institutes of Bangladesh from 2015 to 2017. Our results show that the relationship is positive or neutral in some cases. Therefore, microfinance in Bangladesh has been attaining both social and financial objectives and there appears no mission drift.

  • Green and low carbon matters: A systematic review of the past, today, and future on sustainability supply chain management practices among manufacturing industry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cleaner Engineering and Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2666-7908. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change has arisen as one of human beings' most significant threats. A higher proportion of carbon dioxide emissions are produced from developing countries as manufacturing globalization requires more and more emerging nations. The predicament between carbon reduction and fast industrial development makes firms in developing countries reluctant to take thoughtful commitment and actions in carbon dioxide emission reduction in their global manufacturing practices. Sustainability, green, and low-carbon supply chain networks research is still also in its infant stage from a theoretical perspective and requires further research and development. Therefore this research aims to address the research question: “Why and how organizations are adopting sustainable strategies in developing countries to increase sustainable supply chain management practices in the manufacturing?“. In order to thoroughly analyse the literature, this paper used ATLAS.ti 9 software tools to save, identify, and assess the data for this study. We reviewed, compiled, and sorted papers from 326 publications for this article and then recognized 141 as critical to the work scope. The results reveal that the organization's current concentration is on improving internal environmental efficiency related to its mid-stream SCM activities. The introduction of environmental practices at the external level (downstream and upstream) is relatively limited, and few organizations are collaborating effectively with supply chain partners to improve their SSCM performance. The results also show that organizational performance, reputation/risk management, customer pressure, and top management support are primary motivators for organizations to embrace SSCM practices. The typology suggests that companies need to consider and recognize their key sustainability risk in the past, current, and future to have a simple organizational design to innovative management methods to handle their sustainable supply chain practices.

    • The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is important in neurological pathology for appropriate medical therapy. Algorithms based on decision tree induction (DTI) have been widely used for diagnosing PD through biomedical voice disorders. However, DTI for PD diagnosis is based on a greedy search algorithm which causes overfitting and inferior solutions. This paper improved the performance of DTI using evolutionary-based genetic algorithms. The goal was to combine evolutionary techniques, namely, a genetic algorithm (GA) and genetic programming (GP), with a decision tree algorithm (J48) to improve the classification performance. The developed model was applied to a real biomedical dataset for the diagnosis of PD. The results showed that the accuracy of the J48, was improved from 80.51% to 89.23% and to 90.76% using the GA and GP, respectively.

    • Trend of Engineering system evolution (TESE) is a popular tool in the theory of inventive problem-solving (TRIZ). Because it is applicable in various domains, it has been extensively used in practical projects to develop engineering products and forecast new technologies. However, although its generic pattern makes it a versatile tool for inventing and discovering the next generation of engineering systems, the scope of its practical use in product innovation has yet to be critically explored. This includes the applicability of its trends and sub-trends, efficacy and benefits in product development, and challenges and limitations. Therefore, this review uses reliable and noteworthy studies to overview the use of TESE in science and explore the benefits and challenges associated with its practical use. TESE-based studies have been conducted to prove its usability in technological development and innovation. We recommend that TESE should be integrated with various computer-aided aspects, such as scientific information, patents, social networking, disruptive technologies, manufacturing, and robotics, to address existing limitations. In addition, this review validates that these five aspects have yet to be demonstrated cohesively. This review provides TESE practitioners with insights into the application of the trends and sub-trends of the TESE toolkit.

    • The construction industry plays a significant role in developing a country’s economy. However, success in this sector largely depends upon the performance of its human resources engaged in different functions. Rapidly developing countries like Malaysia are primarily focusing on improving their infrastructure, ultimately giving rise to a boom in the construction industry, though still, not many studies focused on performance management via a modern working environment. Nonetheless, the present COVID-19 pandemic has driven industries to implement new/modern working methods, but it has yet to be assessed whether the new practices have changed job performance. Dwelling on that, this study explores modern working possibilities, including flexible work schedules, sabbaticals, and telecommuting, as critical factors affecting employee performance engaged in the construction industry. The data was collected via a survey in Malaysia and then statistically analyzed in Structural Equation Modelling. The findings suggest flexible work practices and sabbaticals as critical factors deemed to improve employee performance especially during the recent pandemic of COVID-19. Furthermore, telecommuting is identified as another assertive factor affecting construction performance. Thus, this study will serve as the baseline to further explore the role of these important performance attributes in construction as well as other industries.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied System Innovation. - : MDPI AG. - 2571-5577. ; 3:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is seen as a way to enhance knowledge collection in the construction sector. Although the theoretical benefits of ICT implementation have been clarified, realizing such benefits is insufficient. This paper attempted a systematic analysis of the literature using ATLAS.ti 9 software to save, identify, and analyze this study’s data. A total of 102 articles were actively reviewed, including 82 Scopus journals and 20 conference papers published from 2003 to 2020. In this article, from a construction industry point of view, the ICT adoption process is considered as an interaction between technology, task, and an individual from a construction industry perspective. While ICT is acknowledged as a source of aggressive gain by both practitioners and scholars, ICT’s sole presence would definitely not guarantee achievement in the industry’s ICT approval. Companies cannot grasp the full benefits of ICT, except that users are able to adopt the technology. Hence, the issues related to ICT adoption need to be examined.

  • “I Want to Serve, But the Public Does Not Understand”—An Approach to Employees’ Intention to Stay In the Malaysian Construction Companies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied System Innovation. - : MDPI AG. - 2571-5577. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. This paper explicitly clarifies an employee’s goal to voluntarily stay in his/her current employment. A large volume of research has concentrated on corporate environments on the causes of workforce turnover. Nevertheless, little was done to investigate workers’ desire to remain, which was the essential parameter in determining their stay in the construction sector. Therefore, this research was undertaken to explore the relationship between job embeddedness (off-the-job and on-the-job and the intent of staying in Malaysian construction companies with the mediating impact of continuance commitment. For the analysis, a simple random under probability sampling technique was used. Of the overall 280 samples surveyed, 243 responded and used it in the report, 86.8% of the response rate. A structural equation modeling approach was used to analyze the direct and indirect relationships as drawn by the hypotheses. This research showed that the component of the off-the-job, on-the-job embeddedness and intention to stay were substantially linked. At the same time, continuance commitment plays a full mediation between the convergence of off-the-job, on-the-job and the intention to stay. These findings suggest that construction companies in Malaysia need to consider organizational and community embeddedness relationships along with continuance commitment in the invention of programs designated to influence workers’ intention to stay on their current jobs.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Open Engineering. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 2391-5439. ; 11:1, s. 815-829
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The supply chains that make up the distribution networks are becoming more diverse as companies respond to global markets' rigorous demands. Today, the immediate need for sustainable growth is to design, manufacture, and deliver the right product to experience drastic improvements in the right place, at the right price, and at the right time. As a massively distributed, integrated logistics infrastructure, a new "Physical Internet"(PI) model has been implemented to make the existing logistics structures more scalable and sustainable. This article discusses resource control in the PI's modern supply chain and logistics systems while addressing the potential disruptions between the hubs during the transfer of goods. This article attempts to establish how companies will benefit from introducing the PI to optimise their strategic supply chain. This article used ATLAS.ti 9 automated tool to save, classify, and evaluate the data for this analysis to review the literature systematically. For PI, an increasing number of plans, blueprints, and requirements have been established. Still, minimal models are currently developed, explaining how the transformation from the strengthened logistics business models to the PI could occur. There is a lack of awareness of the necessary market structures that can include crucial players and allow the PI model to be embraced. Therefore, this research brings a new viewpoint on logistic operations through the PI idea, guarantees the present situation's view, and presents a solution to the society-business-technology framework.

  • Employee Productivity Assessment Using Fuzzy Inference System
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Information. - 2078-2489. ; 14:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The success of an organization hinges upon the effective utilization of its human resources, which serves as a crucial developmental factor and competitive advantage, and sets the organization apart from others. Evaluating staff productivity involves considering various dimensions, notably structural, behavioral, and circumferential factors. These factors collectively form a three-pronged model that comprehensively encompasses the facets of an organization. However, assessing the productivity of employees poses challenges, due to the inherent complexity of the humanities domain. Fuzzy logic offers a sound approach to address this issue, employing its rationale and leveraging a fuzzy inference system (FIS) as a sophisticated toolbox for measuring productivity. Fuzzy inference systems enhance the flexibility, speed, and adaptability in soft computation. Likewise, their applications, integration, hybridization, and adaptation are also introduced. They also provide an alternative solution to deal with imprecise data. In this study, we endeavored to identify and measure the productivity of human resources within a case study, by developing an alternative framework known as an FIS. Our findings provided evidence to support the validity of the alternative approach. Thus, the utilized approach for assessing employee productivity may provide managers and businesses with a more realistic asset.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL. - 2076-3417. ; 14:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water distribution networks are complex systems that aid in the delivery of water to residential and non-residential areas. However, the networks can be affected by different types of faults, which could lead to the wastage of treated water. As such, there is a need to develop a reliable leakage detection and localization system that can detect leak occurrences in the network. This study, using a simulated dataset from EPANET, presents the application of supervised machine learning classifiers for leak detection and localization in the water distribution network of the University of Port Harcourt Choba campus. The study compared three machine learning classification tools that are used in pattern recognition analysis: the support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, and artificial neural network. The robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach are compared with those of the performance of the classifiers for leakage detection in the network of the case study. The results show that the support vector machine performs the best, with 79% accuracy, while the respective accuracies for the remaining classifiers are 70% for the k-nearest neighbor and 61% for the artificial neural networks. The high accuracy demonstrated by the models shows that they are able to detect and address issues relating to fault detection in a water distribution network. This model could provide a leakage detection system to be applied to buildings for the efficient management of water in their networks.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ABAC Journal. - 0858-0855. ; 40:2, s. 140-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The long-run relationship between interest, unemployment and inflation rates and economic growth in ASEAN countries has been neglected for decades. Such a disregard is surprising because these macroeconomic factors affect capital and investment costs. Using secondary panel data gathered from the World Bank database, we investigate the long-run relationship between these factors and GDP growth from 1995 to 2018 in ASEAN-5 countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines). Statistical results show a strong dynamic long-run linkage between interest and inflation rates and economic growth, but the linkage between unemployment rate and economic growth is insignificant. Granger’s test of causality indicates that interest, unemployment and inflation rates and economic growth are related. Policy makers should be aware of these relationships when making decisions to facilitate economic growth and stability.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marketing strategy plays a significant role in construction industry. However, it depends on the rapid construction of buildings which is an advantage for customer satisfaction. Structural insulated panel (SIP) is a viable solution as a component of prefabricated house, particularly for wall and floor systems. This research focuses on the feasibility of SIP by scrutinising the significant parameters associated with the use of SIP in pre-, during and post-construction phases by seeking the view of industrial managers. The parameters discussed in this paper are cost, quality, recycled materials, construction time and maintenance. A survey was conducted through a questionnaire distributed among construction policy makers and industrial managers in two sections of demographics of respondents and technical aspects of use of SIP in the construction industry. A descriptive statistics method was adopted for presenting quantitative descriptions in forms of chart and histogram. The survey results indicate a remarkable demand for SIP in the construction industry and the need for conducting workshop as the effective ways of raising awareness among construction professionals on recent advancements of structural insulated panel in order to satisfy the construction strategic management. © 2021.
