  • Developing lean and agile health care supply chains
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Supply chain management. - : Emerald. - 1359-8546 .- 1758-6852. ; 16:3, s. 176-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The objective of this exploratory paper is to find out what is important to consider when developing a supply chain in health care, what is required in order to establish a supply chain orientation and how lean and agile can be used as process strategies in order to improve supply chain performance. Design/methodology/approach – In order to build an empirical framework for using both lean and agile strategies in health care supply chain management illustrative examples are provided from a Swedish health care setting describing the patient flow and planning processes. Findings – Supply chain management has potential to work well as a philosophy for patient flow in the health care sector. However, it should not only be about the use of the concept of lean in health care, as in fact is the case in practice today. It is rather about organizing for quick response and flexibility in a hybrid strategy through combining lean and agile process strategies. This can only be done if a systems approach is applied together with a strategic orientation, where cooperative efforts by the supply chain members should synchronize and converge operational as well as strategic capabilities into a unified whole. Practical implications – The analysis in the paper underlines the importance of focusing on both agility and leanness combined. Hospitals or health care systems that introduce such an approach, as opposed to only relying on lean strategies, could gain both competitive advantages and improved performance. Originality/value – In health care, even more so than in the manufacturing industry, containment of costs without sacrificing quality is important. This paper applies SCM techniques, tools and concepts that have not been used previously for patient flow in a health care setting, combining lean and agile in one and the same analysis.

  • A Packaging Redesign Project at IKEA
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nordic case reader in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. - 9788776741358
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • IKEA is a product developing company, known for putting packaging and logistics issues at the top of its agenda. At IKEA, the product and the packaging are developed concurrently with the aim of lowering the total cost from the supplier to the customer. During the years 2002 to 2004, a pckaging redesign project was conducted at IKEA. The purpose of the project was to redesign the packaging for an existing product in order to minimize empty space. Very early on, it was evident that the suggested new packaging solution required a product redesign along with new manufacturing and packaging equipment. The product, tealights, was a complicated product due to safety regulations, standard sizes, etc. The project group not only had to involve different functions within IKEA but also had to convince a tealight manufacturer to collaborate. The results of the project had great implications for the logistics activities in the supply chain and affected all supply chain actors in many ways. The case is a good example of the interdisciplinary nature of packaging and its relations with product design and logistics activities.

  • Practices in the wine supply chain
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: NOFOMA 2015. - Molde : Molde University College. - 9788279622079
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The low level of supply chain maturity and the lack of industry best practices in wine supply chains are stated to be some of the biggest challenges for this industry. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to explore practices in the wine supply chain, and to evaluate a framework of supply chain practices through a multiple case study.Design/methodology/approach: A multiple case study approach is used, through which the case of a multi-national wine producer is compared to the supply chains of small Australian winemakers.Findings: The findings corroborate that performance, while highlighted in production and the quality of the product, is less in focus in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in the supply chain. The wine supply chain is very manufacturing and marketing-focused, with distribution supporting these activities. The case study shows that supply chain practices such as customer orientation, process integration and visibility are key to the wine supply chain, albeit they are not discussed in supply chain terms.Research limitations/implications (if applicable): The research indicates the link between supply chain practice and performance, yet the directionality of this link remains to be established.Practical implications: Wine researchers have called for more research in supply chain management. This paper aims to fill this gap and in addition provide practitioners with practice examples.Original/value: This paper is a first evaluation of a conceptual framework on supply chain practices in the wine supply chain. This framework is very useful for eliciting current practices but also for benchmarking with other companies in the wine industry.

  • Brownboard - A tool to facilitate improved supply chain traceability
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Beyond Business Logistics. - 9789519805092 ; , s. 393-408
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to describe the brownboard tool and to elaborate on its characteristics. Brownboard can be seen as a tool within process mapping and it is focused on supply chain traceability. The process map is created in a dynamical group process where supply chain actors with different competence level meet and interact. The brownboard tool is used in a case study based on a Swedish supply chain for frozen food; ice cream. The data collection includes on-site interviews, observations, and review of internal documents. Empirical results from the case are used to exemplify the use of the tool. This study indicates that the brownboard tool enables identification of potential traceability related improvements by its visualization of the flow throughout the supply chain and through highlighting potential risks connected to traceability for the supply chain actors. The evidence has so far been collected through a single case study, and is thereby limited. Although there are limitations in how far one can generalize, the evidence should be regarded as a first step toward future research on this tool in a wider supply chain context. The Swedish food industry has worked intensively with internal traceability, while supply chain traceability is identified as important but not yet fully implemented. In addition, due to increased consumer awareness about food safety, new regulations, and standards, traceability has become a focus area for the food industry in Sweden. Brownboard is one possible tool that can be used in order to facilitate the process towards fully implemented supply chain traceability. This paper describes and illustrates the use of a novel tool within process mapping for gaining improved supply chain traceability.

  • Comparing the perceived quality of private and public health services in Nigeria
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management Policy and Practice. - 1913-8067. ; 12:7, s. 18-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In several countries services offered by private hospitals are considered to be superior to those of public hospitals. Research on the service quality in hospitals in developing countries is scarce, as is comparison of the customer-perceived quality of the two types of healthcare systems. The present study compares the perceived quality of private and public health services in Nigeria focusing on the capital Lagos. The results show distinctly positive perceptions of the service quality provided by both healthcare systems. However, when high-level hospitals were excluded, the scores for the private hospitals were higher. These findings are in line with earlier studies on hospitals in developed countries, but differ from previous findings on healthcare in developing countries.

  • Borrowing theories in humanitarian supply chain management
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management. - 2042-6755. ; 5:3, s. 281-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeWithin the young research field of humanitarian logistics the use of theoretical concepts and frameworks to provide explanation and understanding of the phenomena under scrutiny is not yet well understood. There is still a lack of research on which theoretical approaches are used and to what extent this emerging field “borrows” theories from other disciplines. The aim of this paper is therefore to deepen the understanding of humanitarian logistics from a theoretical point of view by identifying and evaluating the use of theories in humanitarian logistics literature.Design/methodology/approachA literature review is conducted based on academic journal articles included in a well-recognized and publicly available bibliography on humanitarian logistics articles (Tatham, 2015). A content analysis is applied to the articles in terms of level of theory, research methodology, disaster management stages, disaster types and disaster name/region.FindingsA trend towards using more established, “middle- range” theories, is evident. Nevertheless, the use of theoretical approaches is not evenly spread between the different phases of disaster relief. A strong emphasis on SCM as a background discipline is also mirrored in the choice of theories used, which indicates the solidification of humanitarian logistics as a primarily supply chain discipline. The lack of use of other theoretical perspectives and grand theories is, however, still evident, which provides an interesting research agenda for future research.Research limitations/implicationsThe use of the bibliography limits the generalisation of the findings although some trends are evident.Originality/valueThis is a first review of theories used in humanitarian supply chain management. It provides an overview of the state of the art of humanitarian SCM research but contributes to the maturation of research in this field.
