  • Element-specific magnetic moment profile in BCC Fe/Co superlattices
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 284, s. 273-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BCC Fe/Co superlattices with individual layer thicknesses in the range of 2–9 monolayers have been investigated byX-ray magnetic circular dichroism in combination with SQUID magnetometry in order to study the magnetic momentdistribution in the superlattices. The magnetic moment for Co was found to remain constant, within 0:1 mB=atom, at1:6 mB=atom for all the superlattices. The Fe atoms at the interface have an enhanced moment of about 3:0 mB=atom. Inaddition, a complex dependence of the size of the moments on the thickness of the Fe layer was found and attributed tointerface roughness effects. Element-specific hysteresis curves were also recorded. These measurements show that themagnetic moments of Fe and Co were, as expected, coupled during reversal of the magnetic moment direction.

  • Competing Exchange Interactions in Magnetic Multilayers
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 96, s. 057205-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied alloying of the nonmagnetic spacer layer with a magnetic material as a method of tuning the interlayer coupling in magnetic multilayers. We have specifically studied the Fe/V(100) system by alloying the spacer V with various amounts of Fe. For some Fe concentrations in the spacer, it is possible to create a competition between antiferromagnetic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida exchange and direct ferromagnetic exchange coupling. The exchange coupling and transport properties for a large span of systems with different spacer concentrations and thicknesses were calculated and measured experimentally and good agreement between observations and theory was observed. A reduction in magnetoresistance of about 50% was observed close to the switchover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic coupling.

  • Magnetic moments and exchange interactions in Fe0.82Ni0.18/V bcc(001) multilayers
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 70:9, s. 094421-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic ordering and average magnetization of multilayers are greatly affected by the interface structure of the system. In this paper, interface effects are discussed, and their impact on the amplitude and period of the interlayer exchange coupling and the magnetic moments are investigated for the Fe0.82Ni0.18∕V body-centered-cubic (001) system. By modeling these effects by first principles calculations we find good agreement with experiments over the whole investigated range of layer thicknesses. In addition, as different interface effects give different fingerprints on the interlayer exchange coupling and magnetization, we are able to make an estimate of the interface structure of the different experimental samples by comparing experiment to theory.

  • Magnetism of Semiconductors and Metallic Multilayers
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Magnetic properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors and magnetic metallic multilayers are investigated by SQUID magnetometry. By doping GaAs with magnetic Mn2+ ions under well defined growth conditions, one obtains a diluted magnetic semiconductor, (Ga,Mn)As, in which the randomly-distributed magnetic ions act as acceptor centers. At high enough dopant and hole concentration a carrier-induced ferromagnetic state results between the magnetic ions. Due to peculiarities of the growth process sizable amounts of donor defects, such as Mn interstitials and As antisites, are also introduced into the GaAs host. The magnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As are altered by the presence of such defects through the compensation effect of the holes. The Mn interstitials are thermally unstable above a certain threshold temperature and therefore their concentration can be controlled by post-growth annealing. The influence of the interfaces on the magnetic moment of FeNi/V and FeNi/Co superlattices has been studied. A decrease of the `FeNi' magnetic moment at the interfaces is observed for FeNi/V superlattices while in case of FeNi/Co an enhanced magnetic moment is obtained at the interfaces. Changes of the interlayer exchange coupling have been studied in a series of Fe/V(Fe) multilayers in which the V spacer was alloyed with small amounts of Fe. The dynamic magnetic properties of discontinuous metal-insulator multilayers of Ni81Fe19/Al2O3 have been investigated. By varying the thickness of the insulator the system exhibits a superferromagnetic, a 3d spin-glass-like and a superparamagnetic behavior.
