  • Cortical abnormalities in bipolar disorder: An MRI analysis of 6503 individuals from the ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Working Group

    • Despite decades of research, the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD) is still not well understood. Structural brain differences have been associated with BD, but results from neuroimaging studies have been inconsistent. To address this, we performed the largest study to date of cortical gray matter thickness and surface area measures from brain magnetic resonance imaging scans of 6503 individuals including 1837 unrelated adults with BD and 2582 unrelated healthy controls for group differences while also examining the effects of commonly prescribed medications, age of illness onset, history of psychosis, mood state, age and sex differences on cortical regions. In BD, cortical gray matter was thinner in frontal, temporal and parietal regions of both brain hemispheres. BD had the strongest effects on left pars opercularis (Cohen's d='0.293; P=1.71 × 10 '21), left fusiform gyrus (d='0.288; P=8.25 × 10 '21) and left rostral middle frontal cortex (d='0.276; P=2.99 × 10 '19). Longer duration of illness (after accounting for age at the time of scanning) was associated with reduced cortical thickness in frontal, medial parietal and occipital regions. We found that several commonly prescribed medications, including lithium, antiepileptic and antipsychotic treatment showed significant associations with cortical thickness and surface area, even after accounting for patients who received multiple medications. We found evidence of reduced cortical surface area associated with a history of psychosis but no associations with mood state at the time of scanning. Our analysis revealed previously undetected associations and provides an extensive analysis of potential confounding variables in neuroimaging studies of BD. © 2018 Macmillan Publishers Limited, part of Springer Nature.     • The association between low socioeconomic status and poor health is well established. Empirical studies suggest that psychosocial factors are important mediators for these effects, and that the effects are mediated by psychobiological mechanisms related to stress physiology. The objective of this paper is to explore these psychobiological mechanisms. Psychobiological responses to environmental challenges depend on acquired expectancies (learning) of the relations between responses and stimuli. The stress response occurs whenever an individual is faced with a challenge. It is an essential element in the total adaptive system of the body, and necessary for adaptation, performance and survival. However, a period of recovery is necessary to rebalance and to manage new demands. Individuals with low social status report more environmental challenges and less psychosocial resources. This may lead to vicious circles of learning to expect negative outcomes, loss of coping ability, strain, hopelessness and chronic stress. This type of learning may interfere with the recovery processes, leading to sustained psychobiological activation and loss of dynamic capacity to respond to new challenges. Psychobiological responses and health effects in humans and animals depend on combinations of demands and expected outcomes (coping, control). In studies of humans with chronic psychosocial stress, and low SES, cortisol baseline levels were raised, and the cortisol response to acute stress attenuated. Low job control was associated with insufficient recovery of catecholamines and cortisol, and a range of negative health effects. Biological effects of choice of lifestyle, which also depends on the acquired outcome expectancies, reinforce these direct psychobiological effects on health. The paper concludes that sustained activation and loss of capacity to respond to a novel stressor could be a cause of the higher risk of illness and disease found among people with lower SES.

  • Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover

    • Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural dines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale.

    • Graphene was shown to reveal intriguing properties of its relativistic two-dimensional electron gas; however, its implementation to microelectronic applications is missing to date. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of epitaxial graphene on technologically relevant and in a standard CMOS process achievable Ge(100) epilayers grown on Si(100) substrates. Crystalline graphene monolayer structures were grown by means of chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and in situ surface transport measurements, we demonstrate their metallic character both in momentum and real space. Despite numerous crystalline imperfections, e.g., grain boundaries and strong corrugation, as compared to epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001), charge carrier mobilities of 1 × 104 cm2/Vs were obtained at room temperature, which is a result of the quasi-charge neutrality within the graphene monolayers on germanium and not dependent on the presence of an interface oxide. The interface roughness due to the facet structure of the Ge(100) epilayer, formed during the CVD growth of graphene, can be reduced via subsequent in situ annealing up to 850 °C coming along with an increase in the mobility by 30%. The formation of a Ge(100)-(2 × 1) structure demonstrates the weak interaction and effective delamination of graphene from the Ge/Si(100) substrate.

  • Revealing the electronic band structure of trilayer graphene on SiC: An angle-resolved photoemission study

    • In recent times, trilayer graphene has attracted wide attention owing to its stacking and electric-field-dependent electronic properties. However, a direct and well-resolved experimental visualization of its band structure has not yet been reported. In this paper, we present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data which show with high resolution the electronic band structure of trilayer graphene obtained on alpha-SiC(0001) and beta-SiC(111) via hydrogen intercalation. Electronic bands obtained from tight-binding calculations are fitted to the experimental data to extract the interatomic hopping parameters for Bernal and rhombohedral stacked trilayers. Low-energy electron microscopy measurements demonstrate that the trilayer domains extend over areas of tens of square micrometers, suggesting the feasibility of exploiting this material in electronic and photonic devices. Furthermore, our results suggest that, on SiC substrates, the occurrence of a rhombohedral stacked trilayer is significantly higher than in natural bulk graphite.

  • A narrow bandwidth extreme ultra-violet light source for time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

    • Here, we present a high repetition rate, narrow bandwidth, extreme ultraviolet photon source for time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The narrow bandwidth pulses Δ E = 9, 14, and 18 meV for photon energies h ν = 10.8, 18.1, and 25.3 eV are generated through high harmonic generation using ultra-violet drive pulses with relatively long pulse lengths (461 fs). The high harmonic generation setup employs an annular drive beam in tight focusing geometry at a repetition rate of 250 kHz. Photon energy selection is provided by a series of selectable multilayer bandpass mirrors and thin film filters, thus avoiding any time broadening introduced by single grating monochromators. A two stage optical-parametric amplifier provides < 100 fs tunable pump pulses from 0.65 μm to 9 μm. The narrow bandwidth performance of the light source is demonstrated through angle-resolved photoemission measurements on a series of quantum materials, including high-temperature superconductor Bi-2212, WSe2, and graphene.

    • This overview of four evidence maps is based on systematic reviews of assessment and interventions in social work practice. The aim was to investigate the evidence and evidence gaps within four important areas for social work research and practice. Descriptive data on search strategies and domains were collected from four evidence maps, on Social Assistance, Substance Dependence, Care for older adults respectively for persons with disabilities. The scientific quality and scientific evidence were assessed. Key findings were summarised by analyzing and discussing common and specific elements in the evidence maps. The overview was undertaken in close collaboration between researchers with expertise in the field and a government agency. The overview identified both evidence and evidence gaps with respect to effects and experiences of interventions and assessment methods in four evidence maps. Evidence maps provide a comprehensive picture of the state of social services research and can thereby be of use to both researchers and practitioners, and in the production of evidence based social work.

    • Background: Women who have been treated for cervical cancer have persistent changes in their sexual function, which result in considerable distress. The aim of this study was to investigate the morphology of the vaginal epithelium in cervical cancer survivors treated with radiotherapy and its correlation to serum levels of sex steroid hormones and sexual function.Material and methods: We included 34 patients treated for cervical cancer with radiotherapy and 37 healthy age-matched control women scheduled for benign gynecological surgery. After inspection and grading of vaginal atrophy, vaginal biopsies were taken. Epithelial structures were analyzed by measuring epithelial thickness as well as the number, height and width of the dermal papillae and the dermal papillae distance. Sex steroid hormone levels were analyzed and a questionnaire designed to assess sexual function was filled out.Results: In the cervical cancer survivors treated with radiotherapy, the vaginal epithelium volume was reduced compared to control women. Longer distance between the dermal papillae (p<.001) and a shorter distance from basal layer to epithelial surface (p<.05) were measured. Mucosal atrophy was observed in 91% of the survivors. There was no difference in serum estradiol between cancer survivors and control women, implying that the cancer survivors were sufficiently substituted. The epithelial thickness correlated to serum levels of estradiol. The cervical cancer survivors reported more physical sexual symptoms. The highest relative risk (RR) was found for insufficient vaginal lubrication (RR 12.6), vaginal inelasticity (RR 6.5), reduced genital swelling when sexually aroused (RR 5.9), and for reduction of vaginal length during intercourse (RR 3.9).Conclusion: We found that cervical cancer treatment including radiotherapy is associated with vaginal epithelial atrophy and sexual dysfunction. To hamper the atrophic process affecting the sexual function, an early start of local estrogen after therapy might be of importance.

    • Background: Cervical cancer survivors treated with radiotherapy report vaginal inelasticity and decreased lubrication that may affect their sexual health, but it is unknown which normal tissue reactions mediate these symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the morphology of the connective tissue of the vaginal wall in cervical cancer survivors treated with radiotherapy.Material and methods: We recruited 34 cervical cancer survivors treated with radiotherapy and 37 age-matched controls. Via clinical examination the degree of vaginal atrophy and pelvic fibrosis were estimated. We collected vaginal biopsies, which underwent morphometric analysis focused on elastin and collagen. Additionally, radiation dose at biopsy site were calculated and correlated to the clinical and morphological findings.Results: The survivors had marked morphological vaginal changes, most prominent in the survivors that had received the highest radiation dose at the biopsy site. Mucosal atrophy was observed in 91% and pelvic fibrosis in 97%. A shorter vagina was measured; 7.0cm versus 10.3cm in controls (p<0.001). The area fraction of elastin was greater in survivors; 10.0% (range 5.8-12.9), compared with controls; 3.4% (range 1.8-5.8), p<0.001. The survivors had signs of elastosis with thick aggregated elastin fibers irregularly scattered throughout the connective tissue, while the controls had elastin fibers in a thin sub-epithelial layer. The area fraction of high density collagen in the connective tissue was larger among the survivors (p<0.001). The collagen with the highest density (fibrosis) was more common in the group of cancer survivors that had received external radiation.Conclusions: We found drastic differences in the vaginal wall between the irradiated cervical cancer survivors and the controls, indicating that radiotherapy-induced vaginal symptoms are mediated by connective tissue fibrosis and elastosis. Our results also support that patients treated with external radiation have the highest risk of developing vaginal fibrosis with impairment of their sexual health.   • Formation and structural analysis of twisted bilayer graphene on Ni(111) thin flims

    • We synthesized twisted bilayer graphene on single crystalline Ni(111) thin films to analyze the statistical twist angle distribution on a large scale. The twisted bilayer graphene was formed by combining two growth methods, namely the catalytic surface reaction of hydrocarbons and carbon segregation from Ni. Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) investigations directly revealed dominant twist angles of 13 degrees, 22 degrees, 38 degrees, and 47 degrees. We show that the angle distribution is closely related to the sizes of Moire superlattices which form at commensurate rotation angles. In addition to the commensurate angles, quasi-periodic Moire structures were also formed in the vicinity of the dominant angles, confirmed by microscopic observations with low energy electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The quasi-periodic Moire patterns are presumably caused by insufficient mobility of carbon atoms during the segregation growth while cooling. Micro-LEED studies reveal that the size of single twisted domains is below 400 nm. Atomic-scale characterization by STM indicates that the twisted layer grown by segregation is located underneath the layer grown by surface reaction, i.e. between the Ni surface and the top single-crystal graphene layer.
