  • Management learning and the unsettled humanities : Introduction to the special issue
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Management Learning. - : SAGE Publications. - 1350-5076 .- 1461-7307. ; 52:2, s. 135-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This special issue engages with the unsettling of the humanities to further explore its relevance for management learning and education. It explores how themes traditionally belonging to the humanities have spurred critical inquiry and raised theoretical issues within other disciplines, following the crisis of the classical humanist ideal as ‘the measure of all things’. It focuses on how the tensions resulting from this crisis can be constructively thematized in the field of management and organization studies, and how the unsettling of the humanities’ privileged access to studying the ‘especially human’ can be taken into the classroom. In this manner, the special issue engages with questions related to the Anthropocene, posthumanism and transhumanism, and raises issues concerning the human possibilities for knowing, learning and living in entangled ways. Additionally, it helps us understand the critical role of the humanities in making sense of the reciprocities between imagination, information and the human crafting of meaningful knowledge.

  • Everyday strategic preparedness : the role of practical wisdom in organizations
  • 2007
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book identifies, illustrates and reflects over the role of practical wisdom in organizations for organizations' preparedness. As the need for preparedness stretches the limits of what is thinkable and possible for organizations, the importance of value judgements, i,e, ethics, becomes increasingly clear, which challenges conventional strategy practice. The ancient concept of practical wisdom provides a framework that can guide managers as they balance ethical demands with demands for practical effectiveness. Practical wisdom can be developed through 'playful' activities such as storytelling, reflective dialogue and aesthetic experience. By cultivating practical wisdom, the authors argue, people in organizations can develop the 'everyday strategic preparedness' needed to deal with a complex and uncertain world.

  • After Herzog : blurring fact and fiction in visual organizational ethnography
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Ethnography. - 2046-6749 .- 2046-6757. ; 5:3, s. 202-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to introduce the unique artistic approach of film-maker Werner Herzog as an inspiration to rethink ethnographic studies in general and the notion of reflexivity in particular. Design/methodology/approach - This paper reviews the particularities of Werner Herzog's approach to filmmaking, linking them to the methodological tradition of visual ethnography and especially the debate about the role of reflexivity and performativity in research. Findings - Herzog's conceptualization of meaning as ecstatic truth offers an avenue for visual organizational ethnographers to rethink reflexivity and performativity, reframe research findings and reorganize research activities. The combination of multiple media and the strong authorial involvement exhibited in Herzog's work, can inspire and guide the development of meaningful organizational ethnographies. Originality/value - The paper argues that practicing visual organizational ethnography after Herzog offers researchers an avenue to engage creatively with their research in novel and highly reflexive ways. It offers a different way to think through some of the challenges often associated with ethnographic research.
