  • Detector developments at DESY
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Synchrotron Radiation. - 0909-0495 .- 1600-5775. ; 23, s. 111-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the increased brilliance of state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation sources and the advent of free-electron lasers (FELs) enabling revolutionary science with EUV to X-ray photons comes an urgent need for suitable photon imaging detectors. Requirements include high frame rates, very large dynamic range, single-photon sensitivity with low probability of false positives and (multi)-megapixels. At DESY, one ongoing development project-in collaboration with RAL/STFC, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, Diamond, and Pohang Accelerator Laboratory-is the CMOS-based soft X-ray imager PERCIVAL. PERCIVAL is a monolithic active-pixel sensor back-thinned to access its primary energy range of 250 eV to 1 keV with target efficiencies above 90%. According to preliminary specifications, the roughly 10 cm × 10 cm, 3.5k × 3.7k monolithic sensor will operate at frame rates up to 120 Hz (commensurate with most FELs) and use multiple gains within 27 μm pixels to measure 1 to ∼ 100000 (500 eV) simultaneously arriving photons. DESY is also leading the development of the AGIPD, a high-speed detector based on hybrid pixel technology intended for use at the European XFEL. This system is being developed in collaboration with PSI, University of Hamburg, and University of Bonn. The AGIPD allows singlepulse imaging at 4.5 MHz frame rate into a 352-frame buffer, with a dynamic range allowing single-photon detection and detection of more than 10000 photons at 12.4 keV in the same image. Modules of 65k pixels each are configured to make up (multi)megapixel cameras. This review describes the AGIPD and the PERCIVAL concepts and systems, including some recent results and a summary of their current status. It also gives a short overview over other FEL-relevant developments where the Photon Science Detector Group at DESY is involved. © 2016 International Union of Crystallography.

  • Magnetic anisotropy of ultrathin cobalt films on Pt(111) investigated with x-ray diffraction: Effect of atomic mixing at the interface
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 65:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With standard and resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction we investigate the magnetic properties of Pt atoms in a Co/Pt(111) system. It is shown, that, depending on the thickness of the Co films, the magnetic anisotropy as monitored by the Pt magnetism changes from perpendicular to parallel, mimicking the behavior of the Co overlayer. Adsorption of carbon monoxide on very thin films has been found to change the easy magnetization axis. Moreover, the critical film thickness for the flipping of the easy direction of magnetization depends markedly on the growth temperature even in the vicinities of 300 K, where bulk alloying does not occur. A brief annealing to similar to375 K of a parallel Co film suffices to reverse its easy direction to perpendicular. By analyzing the magnetic crystal truncation rods of the Pt surface, it is concluded that the change of anisotropy is due to site exchange between interfacial Co and Pt atoms. The site exchange which affects up to 4% of the interface atoms has been related to previous scanning tunneling microscopy findings on the same system. Comparison of magneto-optical and x-ray magnetic diffraction measurements on the same film show that the responses to the externally applied field are not identical. A possible explanation is suggested.

  • Screen-Based Simulation for Training and Automated Assessment of Teamwork Skills Comparing 2 Modes With Different Interactivity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Simulation in Healthcare. - : LIPPINCOTT WILLIAMS & WILKINS. - 1559-2332 .- 1559-713X. ; 16:5, s. 318-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The need for teamwork training is well documented; however, teaching these skills is challenging given the logistics of assembling individual team members together to train in person. We designed 2 modes of screen-based simulation for training teamwork skills to assess whether interactivity with nonplayer characters was necessary for in-game performance gains or for player satisfaction with the experience. Methods: Mixed, randomized, repeated measures study with licensed healthcare providers block-stratified and randomized to evaluation-participant observes and evaluates the team player in 3 scenarios-and game play-participant is immersed as the leader in the same 3 scenarios. Teamwork construct scores (leadership, communication, situation monitoring, mutual support) from an ontology-based, Bayesian network assessment model were analyzed using mixed randomized repeated measures analyses of variance to compare performance, across scenarios and modes. Learning was measured by pretest and posttest quiz scores. User experience was evaluated using chi(2) analyses. Results: Among 166 recruited and randomized participants, 120 enrolled in the study and 109 had complete data for analysis. Mean composite teamwork Bayesian network scores improved for successive scenarios in both modes, with evaluation scores statistically higher than game play for every teamwork construct and scenario (r = 0.73, P = 0.000). Quiz scores improved from pretest to posttest (P = 0.004), but differences between modes were not significant. Conclusions: For training teamwork skills using screen-based simulation, interactivity of the player with the nonplayer characters is not necessary for in-game performance gains or for player satisfaction with the experience.
