    • For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D-T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D-T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D-T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D-T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D-T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D-T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfven eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems...) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D-T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D-T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

  • On the ability of the 802.11p MAC method and STDMA to support real-time vehicle-to-vehicle communications
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. - New York : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 1687-1472 .- 1687-1499. ; 2009:902414, s. 1-14

    • Traffic safety applications using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is an emerging and promising area within the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) sphere. Many of these new applications require real-time communication with high reliability, meaning that packets must be successfully delivered before a certain deadline. Applications with early deadlines are expected to require direct V2V communications, and the only standard currently supporting this is the upcoming IEEE 802.11p, included in the wireless access in vehicular environment (WAVE) stack. To meet a real-time deadline, timely and predictable access to the channel is paramount. However, the medium access method used in 802.11p, carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), does not guarantee channel access before a finite deadline. In this paper, we analyze the communication requirements introduced by traffic safety applications, namely, low delay, reliable, real-time communications. We show by simulation of a simple, but realistic, highway scenario, that vehicles using CSMA/CA can experience unacceptable channel access delays and, therefore, 802.11p does not support real-time communications. In addition, we present a potential remedy for this problem, namely, the use of self-organizing time division multiple access (STDMA). The real-time properties of STDMA are investigated by means of the same highway simulation scenario, with promising results.

  • Development of MPPC-based detectors for high count rate DT campaigns at JET
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 123, s. 940-944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The products of fusion reactions at JET are measured using different diagnostic techniques. One of the methods is based on measurements of gamma-rays, originating from reactions between fast ions and plasma impurities. During the forthcoming deuterium-tritium (DT) campaign a particular attention will be paid to 4.44 MeV gamma-rays emitted in the Be-9(alpha,n gamma)C-12 reaction. Gamma-ray detectors foreseen for measurements in DT campaigns have to be able to register spectra at high count rates, up to approximately 500 kHz. For the Gamma-ray Camera at JET a new setup will be based on scintillators with a short decay time, e.g., CeBr3, and a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC). We present two methods of output signal shortening in modules based on MPPC. A short detector output signal is necessary in order to minimize the number of pile up events at high count rates. One method uses a passive RC circuit with a pole zero cancellation, whereas an active transimpedance amplifier is used in the other one. Due to the strong dependence of MPPC properties on temperature variation, a special device MTCD@NCBJ was designed and produced to stabilize the gain in MPPC-based scintillation detectors. We show that this device guarantees stable working conditions.

  • Fast H isotope and impurity mixing in ion-temperature-gradient turbulence
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 58:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) driven turbulence, the resonance condition leads to ion particle turbulent transport coefficients significantly larger than electron particle turbulent transport coefficients. This is shown in nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations and explained by an analytical quasilinear model. It is then illustrated by JETTO-QuaLiKiz integrated modelling. Large ion particle transport coefficients implies that the ion density profiles are uncorrelated to the corresponding ion source, allowing peaked isotope density profiles even in the absence of core source. This also implies no strong core accumulation of He ash. Furthermore, the relaxation time of the individual ion profiles in a multi-species plasma can be significantly faster than the total density profile relaxation time which is constrained by the electrons. This leads to fast isotope mixing and fast impurity transport in FM regimes. In trapped-electron- mode (TEM) turbulence, in presence of electron heating about twice the ion heating, the situation is the inverse: ion particle turbulent transport coefficients are smaller than their electron counterpart.

    • The Nordic Centre of Excellence CRAICC (Cryosphere-Atmosphere Interactions in a Changing Arctic Climate), funded by NordForsk in the years 2011-2016, is the largest joint Nordic research and innovation initiative to date, aiming to strengthen research and innovation regarding climate change issues in the Nordic region. CRAICC gathered more than 100 scientists from all Nordic countries in a virtual centre with the objectives of identifying and quantifying the major processes controlling Arctic warming and related feedback mechanisms, outlining strategies to mitigate Arctic warming, and developing Nordic Earth system modelling with a focus on short-lived climate forcers (SLCFs), including natural and anthropogenic aerosols. The outcome of CRAICC is reflected in more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications, most of which are in the CRAICC special issue of the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. This paper presents an overview of the main scientific topics investigated in the centre and provides the reader with a state-of-the-art comprehensive summary of what has been achieved in CRAICC with links to the particular publications for further detail. Faced with a vast amount of scientific discovery, we do not claim to completely summarize the results from CRAICC within this paper, but rather concentrate here on the main results which are related to feedback loops in climate change-cryosphere interactions that affect Arctic amplification.

  • Divertor currents optimization procedure for JET-ILW high flux expansion experiments
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 129, s. 115-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with a divertor coil currents optimized procedure to design High Flux Expansion (HFE) configurations in the JET tokamak aimed to study the effects of flux expansion variation on the radiation fraction and radiated power re-distribution. A number of benefits of HFE configuration have been experimentally demonstrated on TCV, EAST, NSTX and DIII-D tokamaks and are under investigation for next generation devices, as DEMO and DTT. The procedure proposed here exploits the linearized relation between the plasma-wall gaps and the Poloidal Field (PF) coil currents. Once the linearized model is provided by means of CREATE-NL code, the divertor coils currents are calculated using a constrained quadratic programming optimization procedure, in order to achieve HFE configuration. Flux expanded configurations have been experimentally realized both in ohmic and heated plasma with and without nitrogen seeding. Preliminary results on the effects of the flux expansion variation on total power radiation increase will be also briefly discussed.

  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6587 .- 0741-3335. ; 59:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quasilinear turbulent transport models are a successful tool for prediction of core tokamak plasma profiles in many regimes. Their success hinges on the reproduction of local nonlinear gyrokinetic fluxes. We focus on significant progress in the quasilinear gyrokinetic transport model QuaLiKiz (Bourdelle et al 2016 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 58 014036), which employs an approximated solution of the mode structures to significantly speed up computation time compared to full linear gyrokinetic solvers. Optimisation of the dispersion relation solution algorithm within integrated modelling applications leads to flux calculations x 10(6-7) faster than local nonlinear simulations. This allows tractable simulation of flux-driven dynamic profile evolution including all transport channels: ion and electron heat, main particles, impurities, and momentum. Furthermore, QuaLiKiz now includes the impact of rotation and temperature anisotropy induced poloidal asymmetry on heavy impurity transport, important for W-transport applications. Application within the JETTO integrated modelling code results in 1 s of JET plasma simulation within 10 h using 10 CPUs. Simultaneous predictions of core density, temperature, and toroidal rotation profiles for both JET hybrid and baseline experiments are

  • Antenna Evaluation for Vehicular Applications in Multipath Environment
  • 2017
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Antennas are essential components in any wireless communication system. To evaluate them is challenging, especially when new technologies are emerging.Future intelligent transport systems, where vehicular communications play an important role will cover important aspects such as traffic safety and traffic efficiency. These applications will be covered by technologies such as IEEE 802.11p and LTE. For these emerging technologies, traditional methods for measuring the vehicular antennas such as anechoic chamber measurements or expensive and time-consuming field measurements may not be enough or suitable. Thus a new method for evaluating the antennas performance is desirable. A method that includes the multipath environment to give an idea of the antenna performance in the whole system and at the same time be able to be applied at early stages of product development. This thesis aims to provide such method. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part contains an overview and background of important concepts needed for development of methods for evaluation of vehicular antennas. In the second part, the papers that constitute the core of this work are appended. In Paper A, we evaluate the vehicle’s antenna performance using only simulations. We start by defining the multipath environment for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) communication. Then, the V2X environment is simulated using a multipath simulation tool to evaluate the vehicle’s antennas radiation patterns placed at different positions on the vehicle. This will result in the received power cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) for the voltage samples at the receiving antennas port. In Paper B, we present the design and evaluation of an antenna module for IEEE 802.11p and LTE technologies. The module is designed taking into consideration the available space and suitable placement on the vehicle. The proposed module is in accordance with the requirements for LTE and IEEE 802.11p technologies. This is validated with the analysis of the antenna efficiencies, S-parameters, radiation patterns, and diversity performance for the simulated and measured antenna module. Finally, Paper C presents a method for the evaluation of V2V antennas in a simulated measurement-based multipath environment. Here, a measurement campaign is performed to obtain the parameters (i.e., the angular received power spectrum) that define a realistic V2V multipath environment. These parameters are then introduced in a multipath simulation tool where the antennas radiation patterns are evaluated. Results are expressed in terms of received power CDFs. This method is validated by comparing the simulated and measured received power for two roof-top vehicle antennas.

  • Clinical trial : colectomy after rescue therapy in ulcerative colitis-3-year follow-up of the Swedish-Danish controlled infliximab study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. - : Wiley. - 0269-2813 .- 1365-2036. ; 32:8, s. 984-989
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The long-term efficacy of infliximab as rescue therapy in steroid-refractory ulcerative colitis is not well described. Aim To examine the long-term efficacy of infliximab as a rescue therapy through a 3-year follow-up of a previous placebo-controlled trial of infliximab in acute steroid-refractory ulcerative colitis. Method In the original study, 45 patients were randomized to a single infusion of infliximab 5 mg/kg or placebo, and at 3 months, 7/24 patients given infliximab were operated vs. 14/21 patients given placebo. Three years or later, patients were asked to participate in a clinical follow-up. Results Another seven patients underwent colectomy during follow-up: five in the infliximab group and two in the placebo group. After 3 years, a total of 12/24 (50%) patients given infliximab and 16/21 (76%) given placebo (P = 0.012) had a colectomy. None of eight patients in endoscopic remission at 3 months later had a colectomy compared with 7/14 (50%) patients who were not in remission (P = 0.02). There was no mortality. Conclusion The benefit of rescue therapy with infliximab in steroid-refractory acute ulcerative colitis remained after 3 years. The main advantage of infliximab treatment occurred during the first 3 months, whereas subsequent colectomy rates were similar in the two groups. Mucosal healing at 3 months influenced later risk of colectomy.

  • Multi-machine scaling of the main SOL parallel heat flux width in tokamak limiter plasmas
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 58:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As in many of today's tokamaks, plasma start-up in ITER will be performed in limiter configuration on either the inner or outer midplane first wall (FW). The massive, beryllium armored ITER FW panels are toroidally shaped to protect panel-to-panel misalignments, increasing the deposited power flux density compared with a purely cylindrical surface. The chosen shaping should thus be optimized for a given radial profile of parallel heat flux, q(parallel to) in the scrape-off layer (SOL) to ensure optimal power spreading. For plasmas limited on the outer wall in tokamaks, this profile is commonly observed to decay exponentially as q(parallel to) = q(0)exp (-r/lambda(omp)(q)), or, for inner wall limiter plasmas with the double exponential decay comprising a sharp near-SOL feature and a broader main SOL width, lambda(omp)(q). The initial choice of lambda(omp)(q), which is critical in ensuring that current ramp-up or down will be possible as planned in the ITER scenario design, was made on the basis of an extremely restricted L-mode divertor dataset, using infra-red thermography measurements on the outer divertor target to extrapolate to a heat flux width at the main plasma midplane. This unsatisfactory situation has now been significantly improved by a dedicated multi-machine ohmic and L-mode limiter plasma study, conducted under the auspices of the International Tokamak Physics Activity, involving 11 tokamaks covering a wide parameter range with R = 0.4-2.8 m, B-0 = 1.2-7.5T, I-p = 9-2500 kA. Measurements of lambda(omp)(q) in the database are made exclusively on all devices using a variety of fast reciprocating Langmuir probes entering the plasma at a variety of poloidal locations, but with the majority being on the low field side. Statistical analysis of the database reveals nine reasonable engineering and dimensionless scalings. All yield, however, similar predicted values of lambda(omp)(q) mapped to the outside midplane. The engineering scaling with the highest statistical significance, lambda(omp)(q) = 10(P-tot/V(W m(-3)))(-0.38)(a/R/kappa)(1.3), dependent on input power density, aspect ratio and elongation, yields lambda(omp)(q) = [7, 4, 5] cm for I-p = [2.5, 5.0, 7.5] MA, the three reference limiter plasma currents specified in the ITER heat and nuclear load specifications. Mapped to the inboard midplane, the worst case (7.5 MA) corresponds to lambda(omp)(q) similar to 57 +/- 14 imp mm, thus consolidating the 50 mm width used to optimize the FW panel toroidal shape.

  • Escaping alpha-particle monitor for burning plasmas
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 58:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a diagnostic system, gamma-ray alpha-particle monitor (GRAM), for continuous monitoring of deuterium-tritium fusion alpha-particles in the MeV energy range escaped from the plasma to the first wall. The diagnostic is based on the detection of gamma-rays produced in nuclear reactions. The reactions Be-9(alpha,eta,gamma)C-12 and B-10(alpha,p,gamma)C-13 have been selected. For that purpose, Be- or B-10-target is placed on the first wall, where the alphas are expected to be mostly lost. Striking the target, the lost alphas generate specific gamma-rays, if their energy E-alpha > 1.5 MeV. To measure this gamma-ray emission, the target should be in the field of view of a collimated detector, which is protected from neutrons and background gammas. The calibrated detector could deliver absolute values of the lost alpha-particle flux with a temporal resolution depending on intensity of losses. A high-performance gamma-ray spectrometer with a novel architecture, GRITER, is proposed to be used in GRAM. It consists of a stack of the optically isolated high-Z fast scintillators with independent signal readout. GRITER is supposed to be operated at count-rates substantially exceeding the capability of a single crystal detector of the same size. The GRAM diagnostic system consists of two identical spectrometers, which measure both gamma-rays due to alpha-particle loss and gamma-ray background ensuring reliable data in a harsh reactor environment. GRAM could be tested during the non-DT plasma operation monitoring lost DD fusion products, neutral beam heating D-ions (E-D > 0.5 MeV) and ICRF accelerated H- and He-3-ions through the detection of gamma-rays resulting from nuclear reactions. The use of GRAM on JET and ITER, including events with extremely high loss rates, is discussed.

  • 14 MeV calibration of JET neutron detectors-phase 1: Calibration and characterization of the neutron source
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 58:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In view of the planned DT operations at JET, a calibration of the JET neutron monitors at 14 MeV neutron energy is needed using a 14 MeV neutron generator deployed inside the vacuum vessel by the JET remote handling system. The target accuracy of this calibration is 10% as also required by ITER, where a precise neutron yield measurement is important, e.g. for tritium accountancy. To achieve this accuracy, the 14 MeV neutron generator selected as the calibration source has been fully characterised and calibrated prior to the in-vessel calibration of the JET monitors. This paper describes the measurements performed using different types of neutron detectors, spectrometers, calibrated long counters and activation foils which allowed us to obtain the neutron emission rate and the anisotropy of the neutron generator, i.e.The neutron flux and energy spectrum dependence on emission angle, and to derive the absolute emission rate in 4π sr. The use of high resolution diamond spectrometers made it possible to resolve the complex features of the neutron energy spectra resulting from the mixed D/T beam ions reacting with the D/T nuclei present in the neutron generator target. As the neutron generator is not a stable neutron source, several monitoring detectors were attached to it by means of an ad hoc mechanical structure to continuously monitor the neutron emission rate during the in-vessel calibration. These monitoring detectors, two diamond diodes and activation foils, have been calibrated in terms of neutrons/counts within ± 5% total uncertainty. A neutron source routine has been developed, able to produce the neutron spectra resulting from all possible reactions occurring with the D/T ions in the beam impinging on the Ti D/T target. The neutron energy spectra calculated by combining the source routine with a MCNP model of the neutron generator have been validated by the measurements. These numerical tools will be key in analysing the results from the in-vessel calibration and to derive the response of the JET neutron detectors to DT plasma neutrons starting from the response to the generator neutrons, and taking into account all the calibration circumstances.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NBI-heated L-mode plasmas have been obtained in JET with the Be/W ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) in H and D, with matched profiles of the dimensionless plasma parameters, rho*, nu*, beta and q in the plasma core confinement region and same T-i/T-e and Z(eff). The achieved isotope identity indicates that the confinement scale invariance principle is satisfied in the core confinement region of these plasmas, where the dominant instabilities are Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) modes. The dimensionless thermal energy confinement time, Omega(i) tau(E,th), and the scaled core plasma heat diffusivity, A chi(eff)/B-T, are identical in H and D within error bars, indicating lack of isotope mass dependence of the dimensionless L-mode thermal energy confinement time in JET-ILW. Predictive flux driven simulations with JETTO-TGLF of the H and D identity pair is in very good agreement with experiment for both isotopes: the stiff core heat transport, typical of JET-ILW NBI heated L-modes, overcomes the local gyro-Bohm scaling of gradient-driven TGLF, explaining the lack of isotope mass dependence in the confinement region of these plasmas. The effect of E x B shearing on the predicted heat and particle transport channels is found to be negligible for these low beta and low momentum input plasmas.

  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The full scale realisation of nuclear fusion as an energy source requires a detailed understanding of power and energy balance in current experimental devices. In this we explore whether a global power balance model in which some of the calibration factors applied to the source or sink terms are fitted to the data can provide insight into possible causes of any discrepancies in power and energy balance seen in the JET tokamak. We show that the dynamics in the power balance can only be properly reproduced by including the changes in the thermal stored energy which therefore provides an additional opportunity to cross calibrate other terms in the power balance equation. Although the results are inconclusive with respect to the original goal of identifying the source of the discrepancies in the energy balance, we do find that with optimised parameters an extremely good prediction of the total power measured at the outer divertor target can be obtained over a wide range of pulses with time resolution up to similar to 25 ms.

    • In this paper we discuss results from the study of the energy balance in JET based on calculated heating energies, radiated energy from bolometry and tile calorimetry. Recent data enables us to be more confident in the numbers used and to exclude certain possibilities but the overall energy imbalance which typically amounts to 25% of total input remains unexplained. This shows that caution is required in interpreting fractional radiated powers which are commonly used to measure the effectiveness of impurity seeded scenarios at reducing divertor heat load.

  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In October 2014, JET completed a scoping study involving high power scenario development in preparation for DT along with other experiments critical for ITER. These experiments have involved intentional and unintentional melt damage both to bulk beryllium main chamber tiles and to divertor tiles. This paper provides an overview of the findings of concern for machine protection in JET and ITER, illustrating each case with high resolution images taken by remote handling or after removal from the machine. The bulk beryllium upper dump plate tiles and some other protection tiles have been repeatedly flash melted by what we believe to be mainly fast unmitigated disruptions. The flash melting produced in this way is seen at all toroidal locations and the melt layer is driven by j x B forces radially outward and upwards against gravity. In contrast, the melt pools caused while attempting to use MGI to mitigate deliberately generated runaway electron beams are localized to several limiters and the ejected material appears less influenced by j. x. B forces and shows signs of boiling. In the divertor, transient melting of bulk tungsten by ELMs was studied in support of the ITER divertor material decision using a specially prepared divertor module containing an exposed edge. Removal of the module from the machine in 2015 has provided improved imaging of the melt and this confirms that the melt layers are driven by ELMs. No other melt damage to the other 9215 bulk tungsten lamellas has yet been observed.

  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The migration of wall material or seeding impurities plays an important role in the formation of mixed materials, the impurity contamination of the plasma and tritium retention. First, this work presents an improved model for the sputtering from mixed material surfaces in WallDYN. Second, we present dynamic SDTrimSP and WallDYN simulations of the nitrogen implantation in Be and the migration of nitrogen in tokamaks with a Be main wall. The simulations with the binary collision code SDTrimSP predict that N accumulates directly at the surface and that the Be erosion decreases with increasing N surface content. A first application of WallDYN to the nitrogen migration with an ITER-like wall indicates that the Be main wall may cause wall pumping of N by co-deposition with Be.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of analysis of triton burn-up process using the data from diamond detector. Neutron monitor based on CVD diamond was installed in JET torus hall close to the plasma center. We measure the part of 14 MeV neutrons in scenarios where plasma current varies in a range of 1-3 MA. In this experiment diamond neutron monitor was also able to detect strong gamma bursts produced by runaway electrons arising during the disruptions. We can conclude that CVD diamond detector will contribute to the study of fast particles confinement and help predict the disruption events in future tokamaks. Published by AIP Publishing.

  • Sensitivity Analysis of Linear DS-CDMA Detectors to Propagation Delay Estimation Errors
  • 1995

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An asynchronous direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication system operating over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered. In many applications, the near-far problem can be the limiting factor. Several near-far resistant receivers have therefore been proposed (e.g., the decorrelating receiver). These receivers assume perfect knowledge of the propagation delay from all users to the receiver. In practice, the delays are estimated and therefore subject to estimation errors. The performance penalty these errors impose on linear detectors, especially the decorrelating detector, is evaluated

    • In this paper, an asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) communication system operating over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered. The performance degradation these errors impose on linear detectors, especially the decorrelating detector, is the topic of this paper.

  • A First Analysis of JET Plasma Profile-Based Indicators for Disruption Prediction and Avoidance
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0093-3813 .- 1939-9375. ; 46:7, s. 2691-2698
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable algorithms for disruption avoidance and prediction are foreseen to play a fundamental role in the JET control system for the successful operation of the machine in the upcoming deuterium-tritium campaigns. The integration of such algorithms is expected to be a key part also in the implementation of the ITER plasma control system. So far, most of the effort has been devoted to the prediction of disruptions, which is required to mitigate the effects of these transient events, protecting the integrity of in-vessel components. Nevertheless, in order to put in place recover strategies or to have the possibility of a soft landing for the plasma current, the paradigm must be shifted to avoiding disruptions. In this paper, plasma profile-based indicators will be statistically analyzed showing their potential in such a perspective, where warning times and reliability of detection are crucial.

  • Global optimization driven by genetic algorithms for disruption predictors based on APODIS architecture
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 112, s. 1014-1018
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since year 2010, the APODIS architecture has proven its accuracy predicting disruptions in JET tokamak. Nevertheless, it has shown margins for improvements, fact indisputable after the enhanced performances achieved in posterior upgrades. In this article, a complete optimization driven by Genetic Algorithms (GA) is applied to it aiming at considering all possible combination of signals, signal features, quantity of models, their characteristics and internal parameters. This global optimization targets the creation of the best possible system with a reduced amount of required training data. The results harbor no doubts about the reliability of the global optimization method, allowing to outperform the ones of previous versions: 91.77% of predictions (89.24% with an anticipation higher than 10 ms) with a 3.55% of false alarms. Beyond its effectiveness, it also provides the potential opportunity to develop a spectrum of future predictors using different training datasets. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Predictable and Scalable Medium Access Control for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This licentiate thesis work investigates two medium access control (MAC) methods, when used in traffic safety applications over vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The MAC methods are carrier sense multiple access (CSMA), as specified by the leading standard for VANETs IEEE 802.11p, and self-organizing time-division multiple access (STDMA) as used by the leading standard for transponders on ships. All vehicles in traffic safety applications periodically broadcast cooperative awareness messages (CAMs). The CAM based data traffic implies requirements on a predictable, fair and scalable medium access mechanism. The investigated performance measures are channel access delay, number of consecutive packet drops and the distance between concurrently transmitting nodes. Performance is evaluated by computer simulations of a highway scenario in which all vehicles broadcast CAMs with different update rates and packet lengths. The obtained results show that nodes in a CSMA system can experience unbounded channel access delays and further that there is a significant difference between the best case and worst case channel access delay that a node could experience. In addition, with CSMA there is a very high probability that several concurrently transmitting nodes are located close to each other. This occurs when nodes start their listening periods at the same time or when nodes choose the same backoff value, which results in nodes starting to transmit at the same time instant. The CSMA algorithm is therefore both unpredictable and unfair besides the fact that it scales badly for broadcasted CAMs. STDMA, on the other hand, will always grant channel access for all packets before a predetermined time, regardless of the number of competing nodes. Therefore, the STDMA algorithm is predictable and fair. STDMA, using parameter settings that have been adapted to the vehicular environment, is shown to outperform CSMA when considering the performance measure distance between concurrently transmitting nodes. In CSMA the distance between concurrent transmissions is random, whereas STDMA uses the side information from the CAMs to properly schedule concurrent transmissions in space. The price paid for the superior performance of STDMA is the required network synchronization through a global navigation satellite system, e.g., GPS. That aside since STDMA was shown to be scalable, predictable and fair; it is an excellent candidate for use in VANETs when complex communication requirements from traffic safety applications should be met.

    • Considers an asynchronous direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication system over an AWGN channel. The authors are interested in reducing the computational complexity of a receiver by lowering the dimensionality of the received vector. Dimension reduction has previously been done in an ad hoc manner by several researchers. The present authors derive an optimum form of dimension reduction. The optimality criteria is that the Cramer-Rao bound on estimators of propagation delay, received phase and power are invariant to the reduction transform.

  • DS-CDMA synchronization in time-varying fading channels
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8716 .- 1558-0008. ; 14:8, s. 1636-1642
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, the problem of estimating propagation delays of the transmitted signals in a direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system operating over fading channels is considered. Even though this study is limited to the case when the propagation delays are fixed during the observation interval, the channel gain and phase are allowed to vary in time. Special attention is given to the near-far problem which is catastrophic for the standard acquisition algorithm. An estimator based on subspace identification techniques is proposed, and the Cramer-Rao bound, which serves as an optimality criterion, is derived. The Cramer-Rao bound is shown to be independent of the near-far problem, which implies that there is no fundamental reason for propagation delay estimators to be near-far limited. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is experimentally shown to be robust against the near-far problem.

  • Near-Far Resistant Propagation Delay Estimators for Asynchronous Direct-Sequence Code Division Multiple Access Systems
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science: Mobile Communications, Proceedings 1994 International Zurich Seminar on Digital Communications. - : Springer-Verlag. ; , s. 251-260
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers an asynchronous direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication system over an AWGN channel. We are interested in estimating the propagation delay from the different users to the receiver. The Cram'er-Rao bound for such an estimator is derived and compared with the measured variance of three algorithms. The performance of the classical correlation-based estimator is demonstrated to be quite good in a noise-limited scenario. However, in a near-far situation, i.e., when the multiple access interference becomes dominant, the performance of the classical method is severely degraded. We therefore propose two new algorithms which are shown to be near-far resistant.

  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 44:1, s. 84-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple access CDS-CDMA) communication system, the parameter estimation problem, i.e., estimating the propagation delay, attenuation and phase shift of each user's transmitted signal, may be complicated by the so-called near-far problem. The near-far problem occurs when the amplitudes of the users' received signals are very dissimilar, as the case might be in many important applications, In particular, the standard method for estimating the propagation delays will fail in a near-far situation, Several new estimators, the maximum likelihood, an approximative maximum likelihood and a subspace-based estimator, are therefore proposed and are shown to be robust against the near-far problem, No knowledge of the transmitted bits is assumed, and the proposed estimators can thus be used for both acquisition and tracking. In addition, the Cramer-Rao bound is derived for the parameter estimation problem.

    • The problem considered is of estimating propagation delays of the transmitted signals in a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system operating over fading channels. Special attention is given to the near-far problem. An estimator based on subspace identification techniques is proposed. The Cramer-Rao bound is presented and used as a benchmark when evaluating the performance of the estimator.
