  • On the economic interdependence between China and Japan : Challenges and possibilities
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Asia Pacific Viewpoint. - : Wiley. - 1360-7456 .- 1467-8373. ; 50:2, s. 198-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract The paper presents an analysis of the economic relationship between the two most important economies in Asia. Over the last decades, the Chinese and Japanese economies have become more economically interdependent, a development which will, in the long run, impact the countries’ political relationship. The paper seeks to answer the question: How can China and Japan gain from the current economic situation, further enhance their relationship and increase their synergies for regional economic development? Data on trade and Foreign Direct Investment are used in combination with primary data from interviews with Japanese and Chinese companies on how they perceive the current business situation and future potential. The result of the data analysis shows that the countries have much to gain from their economic interdependence. The firms see great potential in their respective markets but are concerned about political turbulence. Three possible scenarios for the future economic relationship are presented, including fierce competition on all markets and a leveraging of resources for mutual development between Chinese and Japanese companies.

  • Regional reconfiguration of the multinational companies in the knowledge economy
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The European Association for Research on Services, Annual conference 2015, proceedings. Septermber 10-12 2015, Köpenhamn. Organiserat av Roskilde Universitet..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • EU member states compete among each other and with the rest of the world for foreign direct investments. Reconfiguration of MNCs’ activities is therefore important for the development of a European policy framework creating an attractive environment for these FDI. Employment in foreign controlled enterprises in European Member States is affected by the way MNCs allocate restructuring, which can be affected by national governments only to a limited extent. From this perspective it is clear that the way restructuring is managed in MNCs has important implications for European policy making. MNC restructuring is driven by concerns for employment protection; MNC strategic developments, the availability of specific restructuring measures, the development in the local market, and the nature of competition in the specific industry. In the knowledge driven economy, dominated by advanced manufacturing and various forms of services that combined creates value at specific locations, reconfiguration of MNC activities is also vital for future competitiveness. Competition for talent in relation to the development of products and services help to transform the economic geography of the EU Single Internal Market. Firms are expanding and changing their industrial foot- print in order to best sustain and develop their competitive advantage. This combines industrial policy with the development of public policy towards facilitating this industrial reconfiguration in a positive way for regions and municipalities. The objectives of the paper are based on this discussion; 1) to study the reasons for MNC spatial reconfiguration, and impact of MNC spatial reconfiguration for industrial policy and employment regimes, and 2) establish a conceptual contribution to the understanding of the connection between advanced manufacturing and business services that help to drive this reconfiguration.

  • On the waterfront : studying the development of residences and work-places at Norra Älvstranden, Gothenburg, Sweden
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Local Economy. - : Sage Publications. - 0269-0942 .- 1470-9325. ; 29:4-5, s. 429-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following economic restructuring, waterfront redevelopment emerges as a post-industrial option for struggling cities and regions that will boost economic growth. If functioning according to plan, publicly initiated and privately executed waterfront redevelopment will attract educated and high-income earning residents as it simultaneously transforms derelict industrial grounds into residential areas and science parks. The recent financial crisis of 2008 has seen severe turbulence in the urban economy resulting in for example foreclosures and drops in real-estate value. Drawn on this background, the aim of this paper is to shed light on whether a specific place-based activity: the establishment of a redeveloped waterfront in Gothenburg, Sweden facilitating residences and workplaces, has attracted human capital in the form of residents and workers often termed ‘talented’ and ‘creative’. This paper uses a unique longitudinal micro database (GILDA) containing information on residence, work, age etc. covering the entire Swedish population between the years 1990 and 2008 and focuses on flows of in- and out-migration of two human capital sub-groups; the arts-educated bohemians and the engineering-educated consultants. Results show that the waterfront attracts resident consultants and not bohemians, while the growth of workplaces stagnate and decline following the global economic recession of 2008. The paper contributes to knowledge on the complexity of redevelopment and how difficult it is to manage this process.

  • A conceptualization of the product/service interface : Case of the packaging industry in Japan
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Service Science Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2092-5204 .- 2093-0720. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the globalized economy, companies compete on their value-added service offer. Japanese firms have a long tradition of outstanding manufacturing quality. However, the Japanese service industry is less developed in comparison with other OECD countries. Services have often been bundled together with products or internalized in manufacturing firms without separate visibility. We argue that this service bundling can be highly valuable in certain industries where there is a need to increase the service content. The paper uses the interface between product and package to show the potential strengths of the Japanese firms in terms of increasing value-added service in the value-chain. It offers a theoretical contribution to the discussion on the service economy and gives empirical examples from an industry in Japan.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Service Industries Journal. - : Routledge. - 0264-2069 .- 1743-9507. ; 32:4, s. 641-655
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a critical analysis of European service research. The paper reviews the state of service research in 1991 and critically evaluates the subsequent two decades of academic research. The paper then identifies key research challenges that must be addressed over the next decade. The key issues identified include: the development of new conceptual frameworks; the creation of new metaphors that might supplant the dominance of the networking metaphor; research that would explore the production of translocal distributed co-produced service expertise; further work on embodied expertise/labour; research on services and manufacturing; modifications to national statistics and a critical analysis of the relationship between knowledge and business, and professional services.

  • Differentiation in digital creative industry cluster dynamics: the growth and decline of the Japanese video game software industry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler Series B-Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0435-3684 .- 1468-0467. ; 100:3, s. 263-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of digital creative industries has received increasing interest in economic geography, but our knowledge of factors shaping the longer-term growth and decline of digital creative industry clusters remains limited. We address this issue through a longitudinal case study of the Japanese video game software industry during the last three decades. Drawing on a theoretical framework emphasizing the link between differentiation of game intellectual properties (IPs) and competitiveness in creative industries, we suggest that an important role in the growth and subsequent decline of the Japanese video game industry could be attributed to enabling and constraining changing technological and market conditions related to the Japanese cluster's ability to produce differentiated game IPs. A previously highly competitive system lost much of its competitiveness. Technological change in the industry made it difficult for the Japanese cluster to maintain previous levels of differentiation when facing increasing development costs and less cross-sectoral cultural skill transfer.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Games and Culture. - : SAGE Publications. - 1555-4120 .- 1555-4139. ; 3, s. 98-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The policies and regulations of governments affect the online game industry in a variety of ways, especially in countries with extensive state involvement and a low degree of transparency in the economy. This article examines the influence of governmental policies on the development and operation of online games in China. The stance of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) toward online games has been influenced by three aspects of state policy: (a) information control, (b) technonationalism, and (c) social fears/pragmatic nationalism. CCP's specific policies toward the online game industry were put forward by CCP ministries and the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) as a response to the economic potential and increasing influence of the rapidly growing online game industry in China. The interaction of these different policy fields has had complementary and contradictory elements shaping their implementation.

  • Ingår i: Nature Neuroscience. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1097-6256 .- 1546-1726. ; 17:6, s. 801-803

    • It has been unclear whether ischemic stroke induces neurogenesis or neuronal DNA rearrangements in the human neocortex. Using immunohistochemistry; transcriptome, genome and ploidy analyses; and determination of nuclear bomb test-derived (14)C concentration in neuronal DNA, we found neither to be the case. A large proportion of cortical neurons displayed DNA fragmentation and DNA repair a short time after stroke, whereas neurons at chronic stages after stroke showed DNA integrity, demonstrating the relevance of an intact genome for survival.

  • Asian varieties of service capitalism?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Geoforum. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7185. ; 90, s. 119-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is currently only limited empirical research and theoretical conceptualisation of the role of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) in the economies of Asia within economic geography or elsewhere in the wider sodal scientific literature. This paper argues that existing theoretical understandings of KIBS are inadequate to conceptualise the nature of ongoing KISS development in Asian economies - both emerging and mature - and seeks to address this absence by developing a theoretical framework that draws on a range of existing theoretical approaches within and beyond economic geography. To do this, it proposes the concept of 'service capitalism', developed from work concerned with varieties of capitalism (VoC), variegated capitalism and advanced service industries. The paper elaborates its theoretical argument by presenting research into two forms of Asian service capitalism through two case studies examining respectively the specific nature of Japanese KISS and the development of KIBS in China. Using the case studies, it demonstrates how service industry development in both these Asian economies exhibits distinctive characteristics that are a consequence of both local institutional, corporate, and socio-cultural contexts but are also interconnected the wider global economy in complex ways. The paper thus presents a significant and disruptive challenge to existing theories of KISS development as based on the western experience, and contemporary deployments of the varieties of capitalism and variegated capitalism approaches.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The contributions in this Handbook show the complexity of the green economy in a variety of ways. At the conceptual and theoretical level, the concept remains contested and, in many ways, unclear. Its overlaps with the related ideas of sustainable development and green growth remain areas of significant debate. Equally, the concept of the green economy is being deployed across a huge variety of industries and, more broadly, dimensions of economic activity. In drawing this book to a close, it is therefore impossible and indeed undesirable for us to seek to impose a sense of full coherence on research on the green economy overall. However, based on the various contributions in different parts of this book, we would argue that it is possible to draw out a few concluding issues and themes, and also to generate a set of avenues for future research.

  • The Rise of Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS) in Asian emerging economies
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The European Association for Research on Services, Annual conference 9-12 September 2015 Copenhagen, Denmark, proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: Whilst economic geographers have been at the forefront of pointing to the importance of understanding the rise of services in emerging economies, and have argued that this the rapid increase in relocation of service activities from the developed western economies to Asia has initiated a “second global shift” (Bryson, 2007), the focus has to date largely been concerned with lower order service industries (e.g. work on offshoring, software, or customer services) rather than KIBS. The entry point of this paper is to argue that there is a substantial gap in current social scientific understanding, both empirical and theoretical, in relation to the nature of KIBS in emerging economies. This gap is reflected by the disconnect between the social science literature and recent policy and media commentaries which indicate both the presence and increasing sophistication of domestic KIBS industries within emerging economies. The paper therefore has three main goals: to question the veracity of this historical conceptualisation of KIBS in the global economy, to contest current understanding of the nature of KIBS within emerging economies and to argue furthermore that current theoretical approaches to understanding the nature and role of KIBS in the global economy are ill-equipped in relation to the current rapid rise of new KIBS activity in emerging economies. In relation to this last goal, we argue also from the perspective of economic geography that there is a lack of a conceptual, theoretical and empirical work related to the development of the spatial distribution pattern of the knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) in Asia. The literature on global economic development is yet to effectively deal with this issue in order to better understand and explain the nature of business service sector development in emerging economies below the aggregate level of trade and FDI (Daniels et al., 2012), and it is difficult to predict the future development trajectory (Noland et al., 2012). RESER – September 2015 164 METHODOLOGY: The paper builds on primary and secondary data on the development of the KIBS industry in mature and emerging markets. It involves data from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, EU Commission as well as from industry associations in the respective markets. The primary data builds on interviews made with policy makers and company representatives at location in Asia and Europe. These interviews are constructing the base for a case discussion on how KIBS firms perceive the development in emerging markets but also in relation to their competitive situation in the home market. These insights can then be connected to the more general pattern that we can find in regional and international statistics. EXPECTED RESULTS: The service industry in Asia is to a larger extent internalized than in the west. The industry is also characterized by service bundling within both manufacturing and services in general. Manufacturing firms supply services to clients based on long term relationships and financial institutions provide funding as well as other services to clients. The geographical dynamics within the region are complex due to the high degree of regional production networks demanding the most varied types of services. The agglomeration effect within the KIBS appears to be strong in Asia. The rapid development of new economic centers in the region will impact on the location choice, competitiveness and internationalization of KIBS firms. This relates to both firms entering the region from mature economies, but more importantly regionally based firms. The economic geography of the KIBS industry is also highly dependent on the regulatory and policy environment. Current national policies aim at fostering capital regions and other larger cities as service or knowledge hubs. This development leads to competition between different cities and regions. However, to take full advantage of the economic potential within KIBS in Asia further integration of the markets is required. Research also points to the need of a continuous up-grading of the workforce within KIBS. A strong competence structure is a prerequisite in order to boost regional value-added activities. Domestic capacity building in Asia is based on different market structures, which may lead to a competitive challenge for current and future prospects of foreign service providers in the region. The continued growth path in East Asia to large extent hinges on further development of the service industry.

  • The service sector in the free-trade agreement between the EU and Singapore: closing the gap between policy and business realities.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Asia Europe Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1610-2932 .- 1612-1031. ; 15:1, s. 75-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to investigate how new rules and practices in multilateral, regional and bilateral trade negotiations related to the services industries can be adopted and implemented at the business level, using the recently concluded free-trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between the EU and Singapore as an illustrative case. The purpose is to put the services sector into the larger framework of business service interaction between the EU and the outside world by identifying crucial sub-sectors within the services industries and their relations to physical, ‘visible’ production and trade. Furthermore, to assess the prospects of ‘multilateralising’ regional trade agreements within the service sector, through the ambitions by both parties to make bilateral and interregional FTAs and EPAs more compatible and mutually comparable with the multilateral GATS’ rules. The EU-Singapore FTA is an agreement that became a ‘second-best’ solution of the stalled interregional EU-ASEAN negotiation, taking place 2006–2009. It can nevertheless be seen as a ‘WTO-plus’ endeavour, since it aims at reaching beyond what is under negotiation in the likewise stalled Doha Development Agenda within the WTO framework, particularly in the fields of business services, public procurement, intellectual property rights, trade-related investment measures, and, generally, competition rules. Since both parties already apply low or zero tariffs in most sectors of manufacturing, the main issues in the negotiations were related to services in general and knowledge-intensive business services in particular, with an emphasis on technical barriers to trade. To what extent will there be a true mutual opening up of the service markets between the two parties as a result of the agreement, and what technical and mental barriers remain? This FTA, if successfully implemented, can also pave the way for a revitalisation of the ‘paused’ EU-ASEAN talks, in which issues related to services were most controversial. Furthermore, it should also be seen in the global context of parallel and overlapping existing agreements or proposed talks, e.g. FTAAP, RCEP, TTIP and TPP, as well as the plurilateral TiSA initiative. In this respect, it can also be considered a test of the EU ‘Global Europe’ initiative, launched in 2006, and its follow-up communications from the Commission—the latest so far by the ‘Trade-for-All’ document in October 2015. The paper takes a combined policy- and firm-level approach, by investigating the already reached as well as the potential future impacts by the actors at both sides of the agreement through interviews with diplomatic officials representing EU, ASEAN and separate member-states within both parties, as well as with EU-originated service firms operating in Singapore. A major conclusion is that the business sector sees little direct impact of the future FTA, and that most companies stick to an ‘ad-hoc’ approach to meet and to overcome trade barriers rather than building a comprehensive strategy regarding how to behave after that the agreement has come into force. On the other hand, most companies are positive to the agreement as such but would welcome resumed EU-ASEAN talks, since the most troublesome remaining barriers are related to doing business with neighbouring countries in the region, using Singapore as the hub for transfer of knowledge-based services.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Asia Pacific Management Review. - 1029-3132. ; 19:3, s. 299-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper examines the growing trend of Chinese FDI into Japan. The purpose of this study is to investigate the pattern and characteristics of the Chinese mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in Japan in terms of motives, aims for the investments and the nationality composition of the post-M&A management team. By investigating the Chinese outward FDIs to Japan, defined for the purpose of this study as M&As, since the initiation of the "Going out" strategy in 2000, we attempt to identify the motives and post-acquisition ownership structure of these M&As, and also reflect our findings on contemporary empirical research on Chinese outward FDI. Our results suggest that the Chinese M&As in Japan are a result of well-considered investment decisions, which seem to follow a conscious strategy of aiming for strategic assets and resources that is used to strengthen the competitive position or attaining superior competitive advantage on the Chinese home market.

  • Ingår i: The AJBS 2014 Conference, Vancouver, Canada.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The increasing integration of the Japanese and Chinese economies has become an important part of the regional economic development in East Asia. China is today the most important trading partner for Japan and the Japanese investments in China, by expanding regional production networks, have been vital for developing the industrial base in both countries. While, the Japanese FDIs in China are well documented in the literature, the increasing FDI from China to Japan is, however, little known and discussed in the literature. We study the development of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) between Chinese and Japanese firms after the implementation of the “Going Out” policy. The aim of the paper is to give an account of the development and context for these M&As, as well as analyzing the preliminary results of these investments. Grounded in this study we will also examine the spatial dynamics and influence of regional institutional support on this type of FDI in Japan. By adding these dimensions, the paper aims to generate a contribution to the management geography literature. Empirical examination of the Chinese inward M&As shows a tremendous increase in the amount of cases during the last few years. Chinese investors are seeking strategic assets and new markets, and earlier research shows that investments are conducted in industries where the Chinese government has put special priority. Our findings suggest that regional incentive schemes outside the large urban areas tend not to influence Chinese M&A and location decisions in any significant manner. Furthermore, we conclude that Chinese investors are investing equally in bankrupted as well as healthy firms, and the management of these companies is in almost all cases continued to be run by Japanese, but the Chinese investors seem to take an active role in the board.

    • Purpose. China is today the most important trading partner for Japan and the Japanese investments in China, by expanding regional production networks, have been vital for developing the industrial base in these countries. However, while the Japanese FDIs in China are well documented in the literature, FDI from China to Japan is little known and discussed in the literature. Design/methodology/approach. We study the cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) between Chinese and Japanese firms after the implementation of the “Go Global” policy. The aim of the paper is to give an account of the motives and context for these M&As, as well as analyzing quantitatively the aims and results of these investments from managerial and locational aspects. Findings. Empirical examinations of Chinese M&As in Japan show an increasing trend over the last few years. Chinese investors are seeking strategic assets and new markets, and investments are conducted in strategic industries designated by the Chinese government. We conclude that Chinese investors are investing equally in bankrupted as well as healthy firms, and these companies is in almost all cases continued to be run by Japanese. Furthermore, our findings suggest that regional incentive schemes outside the large urban areas do not influence M&A decisions in any significant manner. Research implication. Investments in regional or peripheral areas can help to strengthen core-cities and would possibly receive support from local governments in a way to strengthen the local economic base. Thus, by adding this spatial dimension, the paper contributes to the literature in management geography.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The 39th EAMSA2023 conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Originally a vision launched by the Japanese government in 2016, the Smart cities concept or Society 5.0 has attracted attention not only in Japan, but also in the EU in connection to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the UN. This development can be seen in the light of increasing climate challenges and the debate on how society needs a broader transformation, aided by digital means, to achieve a sustainable future. The transition has different connotations through policy development and is initiated with both a bottom-up and top-down perspective. In addition, this development coincides with the complexity of technological development and the evolution of society at large. These endeavors are, and will not, develop in an isolated context, but rather through globalization in trade and investment, bringing the economies of Japan and the EU closer together. The recent Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA), and the Green Alliance are involving issues such as climate change and connectivity. Using Japan-EU relations and digitalization of the Japanese society as the units for discussion, this paper aims at studying challenges in the economic and business contexts associated with the Smart Cities and Society 5.0 concepts. Developing sustainable society and urban formations based on information and communication technology (ICT) requires a critical assessment on what stakeholders can bring in relation to the transition towards a green economy and how the public sector and private business can contribute in such a transformation. This development relates to the issue of how policy is being developed and anchored within a society.

    • The turmoil after the Brexit vote in 2016 lead to many Japanese MNCs revaluating their presence in the UK for the benefit of European Single Market by relocating their activities out of the UK. However, Japanese MNCs have a long history of investments in the continental Europe. These Japanese FDIs to the EU are also important tokens of an organizational and managerial reorientation of the Japanese corporate landscape that did start by mid-1990s as a direct result of the end of the Bubble economy. In this context, Japanese acquisitions at the periphery of the EU is little known. In this study, we are taking Sweden as an example of a highly developed European industrial nation, home of several world-leading companies. We are analyzing four major Swedish companies acquired by large Japanese MNCs in the 2000s from locational, managerial, and R&D perspectives. Our results suggest that the Japanese parent MNCs have let the acquired Swedish firms be highly autonomous, allowing them to independently decide on operational issues, business decisions and R&D. We observe high level of trust and respect for the Swedish firms’ market and product knowledge and competencies while refraining from a heavy-handed HQ management by control and fiat.

  • Japanese Business Reinvention in Europe: The case of Sweden
  • 2021

  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the turmoil associated with the Brexit vote in 2016, many Japanese MNCs started to prepare for relocating their activities out of the UK. Japanese MNCs had already a long history of investments in Europe. Japanese FDIs, ranging from being natural resource-seeking to strategic asset-seeking investments, to the EU can also be seen as a result of an organizational and managerial reorientation of the Japanese corporate landscape that did start by mid-1990s as a direct result of the bursting of the Bubble economy.

  • Japanese Economic Engagement With the EU: Geopolitics Meets Business
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Business and Economics. - : North American Business Press. - 1499-691X. ; 24:2, s. 24-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the recent years the world has experienced a shift towards complex relations being formed in the growinginterlacing between geoeconomics and geopolitics. This paper aims at bringing geoeconomics and geopolitics onthe macroeconomic level together with the potential implications for Japanese firms operating in Europe andmore specifically within the EU Single Market. The paper grounds the analysis within international politicaleconomy, international business and economic geography. This broad, eclectic theoretical foundation enables theanalysis to contribute to a deeper understanding of how firms respond to and potentially drive the politicaldevelopment of trade and investment relations. Hence, the paper strives to examine how geopolitics alter theflows of trade and investments, but also to map a new configuration taking place in parallel on the firm level ofindustrial dynamics and economic geographical footprint.

  • THE CHINESE FIRMS’ UTILIZATION OF FOREIGN ACQUISITIONS IN PERIPHERAL INDUSTRIALIZED REGIONS FOR ENHANCING INNOVATION CAPABILITIES
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 4th Global Conference on Economic Geography. 19-23 August 2015..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since the initiation of the”Going Out” strategy in 2000, China has become the most important emerging economy foreign direct investor of the world. In 2012, China became the 3rd largest foreign investor in the world (UNCTAD, 2013), and in 2014 the outgoing investments are for the first time expected to exceed the incoming FDI (Financial Times, 22 Oct., 2014). The Chinese outward foreign direct investments (OFDIs) have been targeting both mature and developing economies in parallel in order to make use of different competitive and locational advantages. New forms of regional economic interconnectedness are being developed in different spatial contexts. The question of where in space innovation and value-‐added is generated has become a central part of the complexity of the economy where advanced manufacturing and services are intertwined (EU, 2014). By using the case of the Baltic Sea region, the combined approach of internationalization theory, innovation management theory and location theory will create a better conceptual framework to understand the Chinese undertakings. The increasing integration of Chinese industries into the world economy is recognized as being an important contributor to regional economic development (e.g., Alon et al, 2012; Alvstam et al, 2009). This paper aims to make a systematic investigation of the current state of the innovation capability-‐building dimensions of Chinese OFDIs in peripheral industrialized regions such as the countries in the Baltic Sea region. By expanding their regional production networks to include also European firms and production units, as well as utilizing them to create new capabilities, the Chinese firms represent a concrete example of the strength in ownership integration between China on one hand and the Baltic Sea region on the other.

  • The EU/Japan EPA – taking stock and looking ahead
  • 2021
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The world has been through different stages of trade negotiations during the last decade. With the fundamental insight that the world trade order in the wake of the Doha round stalled, countries and established trading areas such as the EU looked for more constructive solutions to bring trade forward. Before the Trump administration took office, the EU and the US were negotiating the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). In the Pacific, the US was engaged in negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) framework, capturing most trade outside China. With the Trump administration, the US view on trade relations and trade negotiations changed drastically. With the US currently withdrawn from both the TTIP and the TPP negotiation frameworks but with the UK applying to join the ‘replacement version’ of the TPP called the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the playing field of international political economy and trade relations is profoundly altered. In the wake of the post-Trump position of the US and continuing tense relations with China, the world has rapidly seen geoeconomics as a new field with strong repercussions on the international political scene.
