  • Tuning of dielectric properties and magnetism of SrTiO3 by site-specific doping of Mn
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 84:12, s. 125124-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combining experiments with first-principles calculations, we show that site-specific doping of Mn into SrTiO(3) has a decisive influence on the dielectric properties of these doped systems. We find that phonon contributions to the dielectric constant invariably decrease sharply on doping at any site. However, a sizable, random dipolar contribution only for Mn at the Sr site arises from a strong off-centric displacement of Mn in spite of Mn being in a non-d(0) state; this leads to a large dielectric constant at higher temperatures and gives rise to a relaxor ferroelectric behavior at lower temperatures. We also investigate magnetic properties in detail and critically reevaluate the possibility of a true multiglass state in such systems.

  • Near-Room-Temperature Colossal Magnetodielectricity and Multiglass Properties in Partially Disordered La2NiMnO6
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 108:12, s. 127201-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report magnetic, dielectric, and magnetodielectric responses of the pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this compound is an intrinsically multiglass system with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8%-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150-300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative-spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions in a transition-metal oxide system. We discuss the role of antisite (Ni-Mn) disorder in emergence of these unusual properties.

  • Functional and genetic evidence that the Mal/TIRAP allele variant 180L has been selected by providing protection against septic shock.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 106:25, s. 10272-10277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adequate responses by our innate immune system toward invading pathogens were of vital importance for surviving infections, especially before the antibiotic era. Recently, a polymorphism in Mal (Ser180Leu, TIRAP rs8177374), an important adaptor protein downstream of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and 4 pathways, has been described to provide protection against a broad range of infectious pathogens. We assessed the functional effects of this polymorphism in human experimental endotoxemia, and we demonstrate that individuals bearing the TIRAP 180L allele display an increased, innate immune response to TLR4 and TLR2 ligands, but not to TLR9 stimulation. This phenotype has been related to an increased resistance to infection. However, an overshoot in the release of proinflammatory cytokines by TIRAP 180L homozygous individuals suggests a scenario of balanced evolution. We have also investigated the worldwide distribution of the Ser180Leu polymorphism in 14 populations around the globe to correlate the genetic makeup of TIRAP with the local infectious pressures. Based on the immunological, clinical, and genetic data, we propose that this mutation might have been selected in West Eurasia during the early settlement of this region after the out-of-Africa migration of modern Homo sapiens. This combination of functional and genetic data provides unique insights to our understanding of the pathogenesis of sepsis.

  • Experiments in creating online course content for signal processing education
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 2020 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 9220-9223
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The creation of the NPTEL platform in India has led to a vast population of engineering students getting access to quality online content for Signal Processing. These courses are globally accessible, free of cost, and also provide a means of obtaining certificates of proficiency by taking a proctored examination. Recently, a European Union funded project, MIELES, has supported the activity of creating online courses in the fields related to Signal Processing. This paper presents the details and experiences of creating course content and presents guidelines for prospective content creators.
