  • Figurative competence in narrative development: A longitudinal case study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Language Studies. - 2157-4898 .- 2157-4901. ; 12:4, s. 75-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The primary aim of this study was to examine the development of figurative competence in one individual´s narrative writing from elementary school through high school and beyond. The examination included faded metaphors, rhetorical style figures, and the so-called sensual imagery (e.g., the depiction of a setting to create a certain atmosphere). A secondary aim was to investigate the figurative competence in light of language advancedness. To this end the elaborated noun phrase (length and complexity) was studied. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. The results show that the development of figurative competence is a gradual and protracted process which continues well after graduation from high school, encompassing several, partly overlapping phases. The results also suggest that a number of both internal and external factors (e.g., linguistic repertoire, cognitive and emotional maturity, reader awareness, participation in literacy events and literary reading history) contribute to the development. As was hypothesized, the figurative competence follows a similar trajectory towards increasing maturity as does the elaborated noun phrase.

  • Students´ relational involvement in literary worlds: Levels of engagement when reading fiction in a first and second language
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Language Studies. - Ipswich, MA : EBSCO. - 2157-4898 .- 2157-4901. ; 14:1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The primary aim of this paper is to examine students´ relational engagement in a short story, as well as their use of mental state expressions in responding to it in three different writing assignments, one of which involved photo elicitation. A secondary aim is to examine and compare the relational engagement between students reading the story in Swedish (i.e., their L1) and English (i.e., their L2), respectively. The theoretical framework draws on research in relational engagement/transactional theory, the Appraisal system, Dual Code Theory (DCT), and the Linguistic Threshold Hypothesis. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. A total of 33 students participated in the study, half of whom read the story in Swedish, and half in English. The results show that the students used a wide range of mental state expressions, but also that these expressions changed in accordance with task formulation. The results also show that the photo-elicitation assignment yielded the strongest relational engagement. Furthermore, students reading the story in Swedish generally demonstrated a stronger relational engagement than students reading the story in English. © 2020 IJLS; Printed in the USA by Lulu Press Inc.

  • Theory of Mind development in narrative writing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics. - : Castledown Publishers. - 2209-0959. ; 1:3, s. 188-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to study the development of Theory of Mind capacities in one individual´s narrative writing from year 1 in elementary school through high school and onwards. To this end this longitudinal study focuses on evaluative expressions while drawing on the Appraisal theoretical frame work, developed by Martin (2000) and Martin and White (2005). Both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied. The findings illustrate clear developmental trends in the evaluative choices regarding Appraisal categories, as well as the amount and types of evaluations, and the linguistic realizations of the evaluations in the texts. The findings also display how the individual´s Theory of Mind capacities are inextricably linked to the level of advancement in linguistic repertoire and an increased complexity and sophistication in the organization of narrative structure. The paper concludes with a discussion of some pedagogical implications of the study.

  • L-lysine as adjunctive treatment in patients with schizophrenia: a single-blinded, randomized, cross-over pilot study.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: BMC medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1741-7015. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that the brain's nitric oxide (NO) signalling system may be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and could thus constitute a novel treatment target. The study was designed to investigate the benefit of L-lysine, an amino acid that interferes with NO production, as an add-on treatment for schizophrenia. METHODS: L-lysine, 6 g/day, was administered to ten patients with schizophrenia as an adjunctive to their conventional antipsychotic medication. The study was designed as a single-blinded, cross-over study where patients were randomly assigned to initial treatment with either L-lysine or placebo and screened at baseline, after four weeks when treatment was crossed over, and after eight weeks. RESULTS: L-lysine treatment caused a significant increase in blood concentration of L-lysine and was tolerated well. A significant decrease in positive symptom severity, measured by the Positive And Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), was detected. A certain decrease in score was also observed during placebo treatment and the effects on PANSS could not unequivocally be assigned to the L-lysine treatment. Furthermore, performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test was significantly improved compared to baseline, an effect probably biased by training. Subjective reports from three of the patients indicated decreased symptom severity and enhanced cognitive functioning. CONCLUSIONS: Four-week L-lysine treatment, 6 g/day, caused a significant increase in blood concentration of L-lysine that was well tolerated. Patients showed a significant decrease in positive symptoms as assessed by PANSS in addition to self-reported symptom improvement by three patients. The NO-signalling pathway is an interesting, potentially new treatment target for schizophrenia, however the effects of L-lysine need further evaluation to decide its' potentially beneficial effects on symptom severity in schizophrenia. Trial registration: NCT00996242.
