  • Event-by-event charged-neutral fluctuations in Pb plus Pb collisions at 158 A GeV
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 701:3, s. 300-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Charged particles and photons have been measured in central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 A GeV in a common (eta-phi)-phase space region in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The measured distributions have been analyzed to quantify the frequency with which phase space regions of varying sizes have either small or large neutral pion fraction. The measured results are compared with VENUS model simulated events and with mixed events. Events with both large and small charged-neutral fluctuations are observed to occur more frequently than expected statistically, as deduced from mixed events, or as predicted by model simulations, with the difference becoming more prominent with decreasing size of the A Delta eta-Delta phi region. • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 898, s. 14-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of direct photon production in p + Pb and p + C collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.4 GeV are presented. Upper limits on the direct photon yield as a function of p(T) are derived and compared to the results for Pb + Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.3 GeV. The production of the eta meson, which is an important input to the direct photon signal extraction, has been determined in the eta -> 2 gamma channel for p + C collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.4 GeV. • Pion freeze-out time in Pb plus Pb collisions at 158 AGeV/c studied via pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 48:2, s. 343-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the final state Coulomb interaction on particles produced in Pb + Pb collisions at 158AGeV/c has been investigated in the WA98 experiment through the study of the pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios measured as a function of T-m- (m)0. While the ratio for kaons shows no significant T-m dependence, the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio is enhanced at small T-m - (m)0 values with an enhancement that increases with centrality. A silicon pad detector located near the target is used to estimate the contribution of hyperon decays to the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio. The comparison of results with predictions of the RQMD model in which the Coulomb interaction has been incorporated allows to place constraints on the time of the pion freeze-out.

  • Suppression of high-p(T) neutral pion production in central Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN)=17.3 GeV relative to p+C and p+Pb collisions
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 100:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.4 GeV at midrapidity (2.3 less than or similar to eta(lab)less than or similar to 3.0) over the range 0.7 less than or similar to p(T)less than or similar to 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi(0) spectra measured in Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment. For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N-part less than or similar to 300), the yield of pi(0)'s with p(T)greater than or similar to 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N-coll), while for central Pb+Pb collisions with N-part greater than or similar to 350, the pi(0) yield is suppressed.

  • Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of collective flow in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions measured via inclusive photons
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 762:1-2, s. 129-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Directed and elliptic flow of inclusive photons near mid-rapidity in 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions has been studied. The data have been obtained with the photon spectrometer LEDA of the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The flow strength has been measured for various centralities as a function of p(T) and rapidity over 0. 18 < p(T) < 1.5 GeV/c and 2.3 < y < 2.9. The angular anisotropy has been studied relative to an event plane obtained in the target fragmentation region that shows the elliptic flow to be in-plane. The elliptic flow has also been studied using two-particle correlations and shown to give similar results. A small directed flow component is observed. Both the directed and elliptic flow strengths increase with p(T). The photon flow results are used to estimate the corresponding neutral pion flow.

  • Event-by-event fluctuations in particle multiplicities and transverse energy produced in 158A GeVPb plus Pb collisions
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 65:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and photons, and the total transverse energy in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions are studied for a wide range of centralities. For narrow centrality bins the multiplicity and transverse energy distributions are found to be near perfect Gaussians. The effect of detector acceptance on the multiplicity fluctuations has been studied and demonstrated to follow statistical considerations. The centrality dependence of the charged particle multiplicity fluctuations in the measured data has been found to agree reasonably well with those obtained from a participant model. However, for photons the multiplicity fluctuations have been found to be lower compared to those obtained from a participant model. The multiplicity and transverse energy fluctuations have also been compared to those obtained from the VENUS event generator.

  • Transverse mass distributions of neutral pions from Pb-208-induced reactions at 158 center dot A GeV
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 23:2, s. 225-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Results on transverse mass spectra of neutral pious measured at central rapidity are presented for impact parameter selected 158-A GeV Pb + Pb-1 and Pb + Nb collisions. The distributions cover the range 0.5 GeV/c(2) less than or equal to MT - Mo less than or equal to 4 GeV/c(2). The change of the spectral shape and the multiplicity with centrality is studied in detail. In going from p+p to semi-peripheral Pb+Pb collisions there is a nuclear enhancement increasing with transverse mass similar to the well known Cronin effect, while for very central collisions this enhancement appears to be weaker than expected.

  • Conductivity behaviour in novel quasi-solid-state electrolyte based on polyacrylonitrile and tetrahexylammonium iodide intended for dye sensitized solar cells
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka. - : Sri Lanka Journals Online (JOL). - 1391-4588 .- 2362-0161. ; 41:3, s. 175-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conduction of iodide ions in gel polymer electrolytes and the performance of dye sensitized solar cells containing such an electrolyte can be enhanced by incorporating a salt having a bulky cation. In this work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and Hex(4)N(+)I(-) based gel electrolytes with ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate as plasticizers have been studied. The variation of conductivity and molar conductivity with salt concentration has been discussed in order to understand the mechanism of iodide ion conductivity in this system. Out of the various compositions studied, the electrolyte containing 120 % salt with respect to weight of PAN showed the highest conductivity, 2.0 X 10(-3) Scm(-1) at 25 degrees C and a glass transition at - 102.3 degrees C. The electrolytes exhibit predominantly ionic behaviour and because of the bulky cation a negligible cationic transport is shown. A quasi-solid-state dye sensitized solar cell was fabricated employing the optimized gel electrolyte. This cell showed an energy conversion efficiency of 3.1 % and a short circuit current density of 8.1 mAcm(-2) under irradiation of 1000 Wm(-2).

  • Wound infiltration with ropivacaine and fentanyl: Effects on postoperative pain and PONV after breast surgery
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Anesthesia. - 1873-4529. ; 15:2, s. 113-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Study Objective: To determine whether Postoperative wound infiltration with local anesthetics combined with fentanyl improves analgesia following breast surgery; and to investigate awakening and Postoperative nausea/vomiting. Design: Prospectively randomized clinical study. Setting: University hospital. Patients: 45 ASA physical status I and II patients scheduled for breast surgery. Interventions: Patients were prospectively randomized and assigned to one of three treatments during general anesthesia: postsurgical wound infiltration with ropivacaine 0.375%; wound infiltration with ropivacaine 0.375% combined with fentanyl 0.5 mug/kg; and intravenous (IV) fentanyl 0.5 mug/kg before skin incision and no wound infiltration. Time to first verbal response, Pain at rest, Postoperative nausea and vomiting, and ketobemidone and dixyrazine utilization were compared. Measurements and Main Results: Time to first verbal response was significantly shorter in the IV fentanyl group compared to both infiltration groups (8.1 +/- 4.5 min vs. 15.3 +/- 4.3, and 12.0 +/- 5.0 min; p < 0.05, respectively). Postoperative Pain at rest, and nausea and vomiting occurred with similar frequencies in the groups. Ketobemidone utilization in both infiltration groups, (2.4 +/- 1.8 mg and 3.1 +/- 1.8 mg, respectively) was not different compared to the IV fentanyl group (2.9 +/- 2.0 mg; NS). There were no differences in Postoperative antiemetic requirements during the first, second and third two-hour periods postoperatively. The dixyrazine consumption was similar in the three groups, (0.9 +/- 1.5 mg, 0.8 +/- 1.3 mg, and 1.4 +/- 1.8 mg, respectively; NS). Conclusion: Postsurgical ropivacaine wound infiltration, with or without adding fentanyl, demonstrates no differences in postoperative Pain relief and nausea/vomiting compared to a balanced general anesthetic including IV fentanyl. • Breast conservation surgery, with and without radiotherapy, in women with lymph node-negative breast cancer: a randomised clinical trial in a population with access to public mammography screening.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European journal of cancer (Oxford, England : 1990). - 0959-8049. ; 39, s. 1690-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of postoperative radiotherapy after sector resection for stage I-II lymph node-negative breast cancer was evaluated in a patient population with access to public mammographical screening. 1187 women were randomised to no further treatment or postoperative radiotherapy following a standardised sector resection and axillary dissection. Radiation was administered to a dose of 48-54 Gy. Median age was 60 years, and median size of the detected tumours was 12 mm. Of the women 65% had their tumours detected by mammographical screening. The relative risk (RR) of ipsilateral breast recurrence was significantly higher in the non-irradiated patients compared with the irradiated patients, RR=3.33 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 2.13-5.19, P<0.001). The corresponding cumulative incidence at 5 years was 14% versus 4%, respectively. Overall survival (OS) was similar, RR=1.16 (95% CI 0.81-1.65, P=0.41), with 5 year probabilities of 93 and 94%, respectively. Recurrence-free survival (RFS) at 5 years was significantly lower in the non-irradiated women, 77% versus 88% (P<0.001). Although women above 49 years of age, whose tumours were detected with mammographical screening, had the lowest rate of ipsilateral breast recurrence in this study, the cumulative incidence of such event amounted to 10% at 5 years if radiotherapy was not given. Such a recurrence rate has been considered as unacceptably high, but is, however, in the same range as that reported after lumpectomy and postoperative radiotherapy in published series.

  • Systemic reduction of functionally suppressive CD4dimCD25highFoxp3+ T-regs in human second trimester pregnancy is induced by progesterone and 17 beta-estradiol
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Reproductive Immunology(ISSN 0165-0378), vol 81, issue 2. - : Elsevier BV. ; , s. 160-161
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CD4+CD25high regulatory T cells (Tregs) are implicated in maintenance of murine pregnancy. However, reports regarding circulating Treg frequencies in human pregnancy are inconsistent and the functionality and phenotype of these cells in pregnancy have not been clarified. The aim was to determine the frequency, phenotype and function of circulating Tregs in second trimester human pregnancy and the influence of progesterone and 17β-estradiol on Treg phenotype and frequency. Based on expression of Foxp3, CD127 and HLA-DR, as determined by multi-color flow cytometry, we defined a proper CD4dimCD25high Treg population and showed, in contrast to most previous reports, that this population was reduced in second trimester pregnancy. Unexpectedly, Foxp3 expression was decreased in the Treg, as well as in the CD4+ population. These changes could be replicated in an in vitro system resembling the pregnancy hormonal milieu, where 17β-estradiol, and in particular progesterone, induced, in line with the pregnancy situation, a reduction of CD4dimCD25highFoxp3+ cells in PBMC from non-pregnant women. By co-culturing FACS-sorted Tregs and autologous CD4+CD25- responder cells, we showed that Tregs from pregnant women still displayed the same suppressive capacity as non-pregnant women in terms of suppressing IL-2, TNF-α and IFN-γ secretion from responder cells while efficiently producing IL-4 and IL-10. Our findings support the view of hormones, particularly progesterone, as critical regulators of Tregs in pregnancy. Further, we suggest that in the light of the results of this study, early data on circulating Treg frequencies in pregnancy need re-evaluation.

  • Extracellular water and blood pressure in adults with growth hormone (GH) deficiency: a genotype-phenotype association study.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PloS one. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 9:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in adults is associated with decreased extracellular water volume (ECW). In response to GH replacement therapy (GHRT), ECW increases and blood pressure (BP) reduces or remains unchanged. Our primary aim was to study the association between polymorphisms in genes related to renal tubular function with ECW and BP before and 1 year after GHRT. The ECW measures using bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) were validated against a reference method, the sodium bromide dilution method (Br(-)).

  • Evaluation of filter parameters from direct observations of metal flow in aluminium castings
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The potential in mechanical properties for aluminium casting alloys are in many casting processes not fully utilised. One reason is the defect formation in the casting process. The defects could be oxide films, introduced during mould filling, and pore formation. This investigation has been focused on how the gravity mould filling could be controlled by using filter in the ingate system and the how the pressure drop over the filter can be evaluated. In gravity casting the metal flow velocity usually reaches several metres per second. Direct observations have shown that filters improve mould filling during casting. Additionally, filters cause a pressure loss, which decreases the speed of the metal and gives a smoother filling. In this paper, mould-filling experiments were recorded directly by a video camera through a transparent ceramic glass. Two different types of ceramic filters, reticulated foam filters and extruded filters with 10, 20 and 30 pores per inch and 100 and 300 cells per square inch respectively, were investigated. The influence of active filter area and filter size on the flow reduction has also been investigated. As the casting temperature influences the viscosity of the liquid metal, the pressure loss over the filter was evaluated at various temperatures.Using parameters for calculating flow loss caused by filter can help when designing ingate systems containing filters. The filter parameters can be used in two ways, either to control the speed of the metal or to design the active filter area in a way that the melt flux is not affected. Proper parameters are also important for computer simulations of mould filling. The parameters evaluated from these experiments have been used in computer simulation of mould filling and the results have been compared with experiments.

  • Influence of filter on the mould filling of aluminium melts in vacuum-sealded moulds
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The influence of filters on the mould filling behaviour has been investigated by direct observation experiments. The ingate system was moulded in a vertically parted vacuumsealed sand mould. How the filter in general, and how different filter locations, filter coarseness, active filter area and filter length influence the mould filling has been clarified. The direct observation method is a very powerful way to learn how different ingate system designs and filter conditions affect the mould filling. During mould filling the melt behaviour was recorded by a video camera through a glass wall, from which still images are presented. The general effect of filters is a better filling of the ingate system prior to the filter, and a reduction of the melt velocity, which in turn give smoother filling after the filter. Initially, the downsprue is completely filled at an early stage of the filling due to the back-pressure from the filter. The back-pressure is built up as a result of friction in the filter. An early filling of the downsprue prevents the melt from entraining oxide films or air inclusions. Secondly, the filling of the runner is improved by the use of a filter. The better filling of the runner is mainly an effect of the decreased velocity of the melt. The reduction of the melt velocity results in reduced surface turbulence and less splashing. Reduced surface turbulence and splashing of the melt prevents incorporation of oxide films and air in the melt, which has an overall beneficial effect on the quality of the castings. The location of the filter has been found to play an important role in the filling soundness.

  • Influence of ingate system design on mechanical properties for a cast A1-10Si-0.38Mg alloy
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this work the influence of the ingate system design on the as-cast mechanical properties of an Al-10Si-0.38Mg alloy have been clarified. The Weibull distribution has been seen to describe the spread in mechanical properties very well. The Weibull modulus has therefore been used as a measure of the soundness of an ingate system. Different ingate systems were investigated, including: expanding systems, pressurised systems, systems with and without filter, systems with different designs of the connection between the downsprue and the runner, and systems with and without an additional pocket at the end of the runner. The modification index of the microstructure was also measured in order to investigate if the spread in data is more dependent on the modification index than on the ingate system design. The results showed that a high Weibull modulus is more dependent on the ingate system design than on the modification index of the microstructure. The ultimate tensile strength was not significantly affected by the ingate system design, while the fracture elongation seemed to be more dependent on the melt quality than on the ingate system design. The Weibull modulus indicates that expanding systems are better than pressurised systems, and that the use of a filter in the runner is very beneficial. An additional pocket at the end of the runner has no beneficial effect when using a filter. The connection between the downsprue and the runner should have a rounded bend and the change in cross-section between the downsprue and the runner should be chamfered and not sharp.

  • Mould filling observations of aluminium melts in vacuum-sealed sand moulds
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In order to clarify how the ingate system design influences the mould filling behaviour of aluminium melts in vertically parted vacuum-sealed moulds, some direct observation experiments have been made. A detailed study of how the design of each component in the ingate system affects the mould filling behaviour has been made. The effect of different designs on downsprue-runner connections, runners and end-wall of the runners as well as the effect of wall friction was investigated. The mould filling process was studied through a glass wall and recorded by a video camera. Still images from the videotape are presented and evaluated. The direct observation method has been found to be a very powerful way to follow the melt behaviour during mould filling. To ensure a good filling of the downsprue the melt level in the pouring basin has to be above a certain level from the time when the stopper is removed and during the whole filling sequence. A perpendicular connection between the downsprue and the runner gives a larger flow loss than a rounded type. Due to the larger flow loss the perpendicular connection results in an earlier filling of the downsprue. A tapered runner results in almost simultaneous filling of the specimens compared to a runner with no tapering. On the other hand the tapered runner gives a more divergent melt front which increase the free melt surfaces in contact with air. An additional pocket at the end of the runner has a beneficial effect on the mould filling. A sharp angled pocket is better than a more rounded type. Decreasing the wall thickness increases the flow loss due to wall friction, and causes more significant heat losses.

  • Potential for improved mechanical properties in cast aluminium alloys
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this work is to investigate the potential to improve the mechanical properties of some aluminium alloys, in order to obtain castings with optimum properties. Experiments have been made with pure aluminium, aluminium alloyed with 1% Si and 0,9% Mg and four aluminium cast alloys with 7-12% Si and various amounts of iron, magnesium, copper and manganese. To achieve the best possible solidification, gradient solidification technology of tensile specimen has been used, in order to explore the limits of the mechanical properties in relation to the microstructure. The experiments show that it is not possible to obtain good fracture toughness in alloys with a high iron content. The results also show that many of the aluminium alloys frequently used today are not processed in a way that allows optimal mechanical properties to be achieved. The alloys with a maximum of 0,4% Fe can give 10-23% fracture elongation, depending on other alloying elements such as Si, Mg and Cu. For these alloys it is worthwhile to improve the melt treatment and the casting process to obtain properties close to, or even better than can be achieved in other manufacturing processes. The experiments have given results for both columnar and equiaxed primary solidification structures.

  • A comparison of Fourier vs. Newtonian thermal analyse and its influence on the inverse kinetic growth calculation
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Thermal analysis of cooling curves is a metallurgical process control tool. Any phase transformations and their kinetics are reflected in the cooling rate. An interpretation of the cooling rate and temperatures is coupled to critical parameters, which are needed to assure correct quality of the melt and to give recommendations to modify the melt. This paper was inspired by the question, how well does a thermal ana lysis with one or two thermocouples and subsequent numerical analysis reflect the real phase transformations which occur?Inverse kinetic analysis using Fourier Thermal Analysis and Newtonian Thermal Analysis has been investigated using simulated cooling curves. The present study uses a direct simulation including a kinetic model for simulation of a eutectic phase. In this case, since the solidification sequence is well defined the inverse kinetic analysis should recreate the relation between the growth rate and supercooling of the eutectic phase. The Newtonian Thermal Analysis is based on an interpretation of a single thermal point with respect to solidification and contains a series of assumptions which are not entirely undoubted physically.Consequently the inverse kinetic analysis results in random quality growth parameters. The Fourier Thermal Analysis is based on interpretation of temperature differences between two thermal points with respect to solidification. The calculations conducted, in combination with the inverse kinetic analysis reveal a stable procedure. The decisive parameter determining the quality of inverse analysis is the distance between the thermal points analysed. Closely situated thermal points assure the best quality. The Fourier Thermal Analysis reflects the solidification most correctly.

  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum. - : Trans Tech Publication, Switzerland. - 0255-5476 .- 1662-9752. ; 649, s. 517-522

    • The fracture mechanism of gray cast iron was investigated on tension loaded samples produced under different conditions. The parameters studied included the graphite morphology, the carbon content, the inoculation and the cooling condition. The observations made reveal the role of the microstructure on crack propagation. The cracks were found to always propagate parallel with the graphite flakes. The interaction between the metallic matrix precipitated as primary austenite and graphite has been interpreted by a simplified model of the austenite reinforced eutectic cell. The geometrical transcription gave a standard crack component configuration with known mathematical solution. The microstructure observed in the experiments has been analysed by means of a novel interpretation. The fictitious stress intensity at yield and the fictitious maximum stress intensity at failure are strongly related to the relative shape of the eutectic cell and the fraction primary austenite. A different slope is observed for the material cooled at high rate when the precipitation of primary carbide reduces the stress intensity. The observed relations indicate that the tensile strength of the grey cast iron is the result of the collaboration between the toughness of the metallic matrix precipitated as primary austenite and the brittleness of the graphite phase. The shape and distribution of the primary austenite and graphite can be influenced by chemical composition, by inoculation or by the cooling condition, but they will maintain equilibrium with respect to the stress intensity.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deterministic modelling is a classical method used for solidification simulation. A common procedure uses a kinetic model to describe the growth of solid phases. Formulation of the kinetic models used to be done by direct observation of the solidification process involving thermal analysis and microstructure investigation. Much effort has been invested in studying eutectic alloys and their solidification kinetics. Different growth parameters were observed which are assumed to depend on experimental conditions. The present study uses a direct simulation including a kinetic model for simulation of the eutectic phase. The simulated microstructure and cooling curves were used to carry out inverse thermal and inverse kinetic analyses. The inverse kinetic analysis method introduced indicates a strong equivalence between the direct solidification model and the inverse calculation. The position of the cooling curves used in the inverse analysis has been investigated and the best results are obtained when the cooling curves analysed are from locations closely positioned in space.

  • Microstructure and tensile properties of grey cast iron
  • 2004
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gray cast iron is a widely used construction material with a unique combination of properties such as very good thermal conductivity, vibration damping ability, and good machinability. The production method of casting is convenient to achieve a near final shape of complex geometries. A significant use of this beneficial construction materials can be found in diesel engine components, including cylinder heads, cylinder blocks and piston rings. Environmental and economic factors necessitate the development and optimization of engine components. The present paper summarizes a study of major process and material parameters to maximize and optimize the mechanical properties under static load of grey cast iron. The tensile strength of grey cast iron has been discussed by revealing the fracture mechanism of the material at failure. The ultimate tensile strength is clearly the result of the intimate collaboration between the graphite flake and the primary phases. Several parameters, including the graphi te morphology, carbon content, inoculation, and cooling conditions during solidification influence the ultimate tensile strength by affecting the equilibrium between the major constituents and cracks in the metallic matrix. A model to predict the ultimate tensile strength is developed based on the interpretation of the stress intensity behaviour in a eutectic cell.

    • Development. design and manufacturing of heavy truck engine parts require improved knowledge on solidification kinetics and development of material properties. A suitable tool to handle the complex shape and solidification kinetics is the computer simulation of the casting process. The result is dependent on the thermophysical properties used, boundcny condition and the quality of kinetic models implemented for calculation of resulting metallographical structure and material properties. The paper will present an analysis of the microstructure obtained in the cylinder head casting. The thermal analysis and cooling curves have been obtained through thermocouple measurements in the cylinder head. The microstructure analysis concerns both solidification and solid-state transformation The microstructure is related to the obtained mechanical properties as hardness. The filling, solidification and mechanical properties of the cylinder head have been simulared and compared with the results obtained from measurements. The calculated and measured cooling curves are compared as well.
