  • Variational Bayesian Framework for Receiver Design in the Presence of Phase Noise in MIMO Systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC. - 1525-3511. - 9781467304375 ; , s. 347-352
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, the problem of receiver design for phasenoise estimation and data detection in the presence of oscillator phase noise in a point-to-point multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is addressed. First, we discuss some interesting and challenging aspects in receiver design for MIMO systems in thepresence of Wiener phase noise. Then, using the variational Bayesian (VB) framework, a joint iterative phase noise estimator and symbol detector are developed based on inverse Gibbs or variational free energy maximization. Further, the symbol error probability (SEP) of the newly proposed iterative scheme is compared with the optimal ML detector with perfect phase information for 16-PSK and 16-QAM modulation schemes.

  • Towards systems beyond 3G based on adaptive OFDMA transmission
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE. - 0018-9219 .- 1558-2256. ; 95:12, s. 2432-2455
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High data rates, high spectral efficiency, flexibility, and low delays over the air interface will be important features in next-generation wireless systems. The overall challenge will be packet scheduling and adaptive radio transmission for multiple users, via multiple antennas and over frequency-selective wideband channels. This problem needs to be structured to obtain feasible solutions. The basic simplifying assumptions used here are clustering of antennas into cells, orthogonal transmission by use of cyclic-prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and a time-scale separation view of the total link adaptation, scheduling and intercell coordination problem. Based on these assumptions, we survey techniques that adapt the transmission to the temporal, frequency, and spatial channel properties. We provide a systematic overview of the design problems, such as the dimensioning of the allocated time-frequency resources, the influence of duplexing schemes, adaptation control issues for downlinks and uplinks, timing issues, and their relation to the required performance of channel predictors. Specific design choices are illustrated by recent research within the Swedish Wireless IP program and the EU IST-WINNER project. The presented results indicate that high-performance adaptive OFDM transmission systems are indeed feasible, also for challenging scenarios that involve vehicular velocities, high carrier frequencies, and high bandwidths

  • Design and Performance of Constrained Envelope Continuous Phase Modulation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings IEEE 4th International Waveform Diversity and Design Conference, Orlando, Florida, USA. - 9781424429714 ; , s. 312-316
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have developed a coded modulation system withcontinuous phase and a small controlled envelope variation called Constrained Envelope Continuous Phase Modulation (ceCPM). For the spectrally efficient scenarios, within the ceCPM framework it is possible to find schemes with an SNR gain up to 2.5 dB over Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) at symbol error probability 10−3, under the same requirement on spectral confinement and spectral efficiency as for the best CPM scheme. In this paper we discuss the design process for how to obtain such ceCPM schemes, and we elaborate on the properties of these ceCPM schemes.

  • Evaluations of a 4G Uplink System Based on Adaptive Single-Carrier TDMA
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference Fall, Dallas, Texas, USA. - 1550-2252. - 0780391527 ; 3, s. 1667-1671
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2005 IEEE. Recent research has shown that a single-carrier system with frequency domain equalization can be a potential alternative to an OFDM-based system in a single user case. In this paper we propose and evaluate an adaptive single-carrier TDMA uplink with scheduling for broadband cellular packet data systems. Frequency division duplex (FDD) is assumed. Multiuser channel estimation and channel prediction are considered. The adaptive modulation scheme is optimized to maximize the throughput including also the ARQ part of the transmission. Frequency domain equalization is employed to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI). With the proposed design, the simulation results show that the multiuser diversity gain in spectral efficiency is limited in a wideband system, which indicates that an OFDM based system might be a more favorable candidate.

  • Considerations and consequences of allowing DNA sequence data as types of fungal taxa
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IMA Fungus. - : INT MYCOLOGICAL ASSOC. - 2210-6340 .- 2210-6359. ; 9:1, s. 167-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN.

  • 2004
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In D3.1 the first concept for a WINNER radio network deployment mainly focused on relay basedconcepts are proposed. Further the concept of an radio and protocol architecture is presented that takes upthe relaying approach as well as the idea of having different WINNER radio interface modes to servedifferent user and usage scenarios in an optimal manner. Thereby the presented protocol concept is basedon generic and mode specific user an control plane functionalities, where the common functions fordifferent modes are generalised and provide a common interface towards upper layer functions/protocols.Further some relaying concepts for urban hot area coverage including mesh networks are presentedaccompanied by promising simulation results. In addition to the relaying concepts benchmarks have beenproduced to allow a comparison of new concepts against today’s systems.

  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Following the WINNER vision of a ubiquitous radio system providing wireless access for a wide range ofservices and applications across all environments D3.2 has consequently continued the work of D3.1towards a WINNER deployment concept. To cover the requirements of a WINNER RAN the flexiblenode architecture has been further elaborated. The envisaged WINNER modes are taken into account bymulti-mode protocol architecture that allows to exploit commonalities between different modes leading toa very flexible protocol and a close integration of the WINNER modes. The first steps towards concepts harmonisation are presented by categorising the large number ofdeployment concept proposals coming from D3.1 into logical groups. Further results on the comparisonbetween single-hop and multi-hop are shown in D3.2 accompanied by the presentation and assessment ofrelated routing strategies. Also the cooperative relaying concept has been driven forward and new resultshave been achieved in this field.Next to multi-hop, the single hop based deployment concepts have been elaborated partly with respect tonew air interface technologies. Finally D3.2 describes a system level simulation methodology to simulatethe deployment concepts based on the new WINNER air interface taking the agreed scenarios intoaccount.

  • Analysis of nanoparticle-protein coronas formed in vitro between nanosized welding particles and nasal lavage proteins.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nanotoxicology. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-5390 .- 1743-5404. ; 10:2, s. 226-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Welding fumes include agglomerated particles built up of primary nanoparticles. Particles inhaled through the nose will to some extent be deposited in the protein-rich nasal mucosa, and a protein corona will be formed around the particles. The aim was to identify the protein corona formed between nasal lavage proteins and four types of particles with different parameters. Two of the particles were formed and collected during welding and two were manufactured iron oxides. When nasal lavage proteins were added to the particles, differences were observed in the sizes of the aggregates that were formed. Measurements showed that the amount of protein bound to particles correlated with the relative size increase of the aggregates, suggesting that the surface area was associated with the binding capacity. However, differences in aggregate sizes were detected when nasal proteins were added to UFWF and Fe2O3 particles (having similar agglomerated size) suggesting that yet parameters other than size determine the binding. Relative quantitative mass spectrometric and gel-based analyses showed differences in the protein content of the coronas. High-affinity proteins were further assessed for network interactions. Additional experiments showed that the inhibitory function of secretory leukocyte peptidase inhibitor, a highly abundant nasal protein, was influenced by particle binding suggesting that an understanding of protein function following particle binding is necessary to properly evaluate pathophysiological events. Our results underscore the importance of including particles collected from real working environments when studying the toxic effects of particles because these effects might be mediated by the protein corona.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Administration and Policy in Mental Health. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 0894-587X .- 1573-3289. ; 40:2, s. 145-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet-based mental health services increase rapidly. However, national surveys are incomplete and the consequences for such services are poorly discussed. This study describes characteristics of 60 Internet-based mental health services in Norway and Sweden and discusses their social consequences. More than half of the services were offered by voluntary organisations and targeted towards young people. Professionals answered service users questions in 60% of the services. Eight major themes were identified. These characteristics may indicate a shift in the delivery of mental health services in both countries, and imply changes in the understanding of mental health.

  • Vardagsliv och boendestöd : En studie om människor med psykiska funktionshinder
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the wake of deinstitutionalization, people with psychiatric disabilities are, to a great extent, living in the community. In this thesis everyday life of people with psychiatric disabilities, living in independent housing with community-based social support to manage their daily life, is investigated. Special attention is paid to the characteristics and meaning of community-based social support. Through participating observational studies, interviews and time-geographic diaries, data have been gathered about everyday life of seventeen men and women. It is the interpersonal social conditions that have been the main target of the study, addressed as social networks and social support. Everyday life conditions are dependent on social as well as physical and material circumstances. Although the social conditions are emphasized in the study they are not looked upon as isolated dimensions but as part of everyday life circumstances. The everyday life perspective offers an opportunity to reveal the structures within which everyday life takes place. The time-geographic concepts “community-organized projects” and “individual-organized projects” were used to investigate the structures of everyday life, resulting in four substructures. Four types of everyday life and four patterns of networks connected to the different substructures were identified, showing great variations. The characteristics of community-based social support can be summarized as “the doing”, “the talking” and “the being with” in a reciprocal type of relationship. The meaning of support is shortly described as solution of and relieving problems, social companionship, security, protection and control. Community-based social support show similar importance regardless of the type of everyday life when it comes to solution of problems and different importance when it comes to aspects of support such as social companionship.

  • Constrainedly fair job assignments under minimum wages
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Games and Economic Behavior. - : Elsevier BV. - 0899-8256. ; 68:2, s. 428-442
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A number of jobs are to be assigned to a greater number of workers. While having to abide by the law of minimum wages, firms must determine who should be assigned which job and at what Salary. In Such situations fair (envy-free) allocations usually fail to exist. To cope with this Situation, this paper proposes a new concept of fairness, called constrained fairness. Among the set of constrainedly fair allocations, the so-called constrainedly fair and minimal allocations are of particular interest. The reason for this is that the salaries are not only compatible with the minimum wages; they are also optimal from the standpoint of cost-minimizing firms and the assignment of jobs is efficient from the viewpoint of workers. A convergent dynamic procedure that identifies constrainedly fair and minimal allocations is proposed. Furthermore, strategic properties of the mechanism are derived, and two notions of efficiency are evaluated. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • Gale's Fixed Tax for Exchanging Houses
  • 2018
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We consider the taxation of exchanges among a set of agents where each agent owns one object. Agents may have different valuations for the objects and they need to pay taxes for exchanges. Using basic properties, we show that if pairwise (or some) exchanges of objects are allowed, then all exchanges (in any possible manner) must be feasible. Furthermore, whenever any agent exchanges his object, he pays the same fixed tax (a lump sum payment which is identical for all agents) independently of which object he consumes. Gale's top trading cycles algorithm finds the final allocation using the agents' valuations adjusted with the fixed tax. Our mechanisms are in stark contrast to Clarke-Groves taxation schemes or the max-med schemes proposed by Sprumont (2013).

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider taxation of exchanges among a set of agents in which each agent owns one object. Agents may have different valuations for the objects, and they need to pay taxes for exchanges. We show that, if a rule satisfies individual rationality, strategy-proofness, constrained efficiency, weak anonymity, and weak consistency, then it is either the no-trade rule or a fixed-tax core rule. For the latter rules, whenever any agent exchanges an object, the agent pays the same fixed tax (a lump sum payment that is identical for all agents) independently of which object the agent consumes. Gale’s top trading cycles algorithm finds the final assignment using the agents’ valuations adjusted with the fixed tax if the induced preferences are strict.

  • Non-Manipulable House Allocation with Rent Control Revisited
  • 2015
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper considers a house allocation problem with no initial ownership and where prices are bounded from below and above by exogenously given price restrictions. This type of housing market contains, e.g., the "assignment market" and the "student placement problem" as special cases. A mechanism called the minimal RPE mechanism is defined, and two main results are obtained. First, it is demonstrated that the mechanism is manipulable at some profile in the full preference domain. Second, it is proved that there is a subset of the full domain, containing almost all profiles in the full domain, such that the minimal RPE mechanism is strategy-proof in that subset.

  • Non-Manipulable House Exchange under (Minimum) Equilibrium Prices
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We consider a market with indivisible objects, called houses, and money. On this market, each house is initially owned (or rented) by some agent and each agent demands precisely one house. The problem is to identify the complete set of direct allocation mechanisms that can be used to reallocate the houses among the agents. The focus is on price mechanisms, i.e., mappings of preference profiles to price equilibria, that are strategy-proof and satisfy an individual rationality condition. We prove that the only mechanism that satisfies these conditions is a price mechanism with a minimal equilibrium price vector. The result is not true in full preference domain. Instead, we identify a smaller domain, that contains almost all profiles, where the result holds.

  • Sequential Rules for House Allocation with Price Restrictions
  • 2015
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper considers a housing market with price restrictions. On such markets, the existence of a unique minimum rationing equilibrium price vector has been established for each preference profile on a general preference domain that contains almost all preference profiles. This vector can be used as a key ingredient in a direct and strategy-proof allocation mechanism. The main contribution of this paper is to provide two price sequences, one with increasing prices and one with decreasing prices, that both terminate to a minimal rationing equilibrium price vector in a finite number of steps. These sequences are demonstrated to play key-roles in an English auction and a Dutch auction, respectively, for the considered housing market with price restrictions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers a housing market with price restrictions. On such market, price equilibrium may be excluded for certain preference profiles. However, the existence of a unique minimal rationing price equilibrium has previously been established on a general preference domain that contains “almost all” preference profiles. This type of equilibrium has been demonstrated to be an important ingredient in a direct and strategy-proof allocation mechanism for housing markets with price restrictions. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a finite ascending price sequence that terminates to a minimal rationing price equilibrium. This sequence is demonstrated to play a key-role in an Iterative English Auction Rule for housing markets with price restrictions.

  • Transferring Ownership of Public Housing to Existing Tenants: A Market Design Approach
  • 2015
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores a housing market with an existing tenant in each house and where the existing tenants initially rent their houses. The idea is to identify equilibrium prices for the housing market given the prerequisite that a tenant can buy any house on the housing market, including the one that he currently is possessing, or continue renting the house he currently is occupying. The main contribution is the identification of an individually rational, equilibrium selecting, and group non-manipulable price mechanism in a restricted preference domain that contains almost all preference profiles. In this restricted domain, the identified mechanism is the equilibrium selecting mechanism that transfers the maximum number of ownerships to the existing tenants. We also argue that the theoretical model represents an extension and an improvement of the U.K. Housing Act 1980 whose main objective is to transfer the ownership of the houses to the existing tenants.

  • Transferring Ownership of Public Housing to Existing Tenants: A Mechanism Design Approach
  • 2014
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores the situation when tenants in public houses, in a specific neighborhood, are given the legislated right to buy the houses they live in but can choose to remain in their houses and pay the regulated rent. This type of legislation has been passed in many European countries in the last 30-35 years (U.K. Housing Act 1980 is a leading example). The main objective with this type of legislation is to transfer the ownership of the houses from the public authority to the tenants. To achieve this goal, the selling prices of the public houses are typically heavily subsidized. The legislating body then faces a trade-off between achieving the goals of the legislation and allocating the houses efficiently. This paper investigates this specific trade-off and identifies an allocation rule that is individual rational, equilibrium selecting, and group non-manipulable in a restricted preference domain that contains "almost all" preference profiles. In this restricted domain, the identified rule is the equilibrium selecting rule that transfers the maximum number of ownerships from the public authority to the tenants. This rule is also weakly preferred to the current U.K. system by both the existing tenants and the public authority. Finally, a dynamic process that finds the outcome of the identified rule, in a finite number of steps, is provided.

    • Future 5G systems have set a goal to support mission-critical Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications and they contribute to an important step towards connected and automated driving. To achieve this goal, the communication technologies should be designed based on a solid understanding of the new V2X applications and the related requirements and challenges. In this regard, we provide a description of the main V2X application categories and their representative use cases selected based on an analysis of the future needs of cooperative and automated driving. We also present a methodology on how to derive the network related requirements from the automotive specific requirements. The methodology can be used to analyze the key requirements of both existing and future V2X use cases.

  • Performance evaluation of memory-less and Kalman-based channel estimation for OFDMA
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, Barcelona, Spanien, April 26-29, 2009. - 9781424425167 ; , s. 2314-2318
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The next generation wireless systems based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) need to operate in widely different deployment and usage scenarios. Thus, support for flexible resource allocation is important. In this paper we investigate the performance or different memory-less and memory-based channel estimators for different OFDMA subcarrier allocation schemes and different pilot patterns. We evaluate the performance in various fading environments and for different user terminal velocities. The results show that channel estimation can perform well enough for time-frequency localized resources as small as 22 channel symbols with two pilots in many important scenarios. The results provided can be used to identify appropriate subcarrier allocations for the next generation OFDMA based wireless systems.

  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The deliverable describes the second set of best innovations proposed in the framework of the WP1 on system aspect of advanced Radio Resource Management (RRM) approved by the System Group. These concepts consist of promising innovative techniques and include an initial evaluation of the performance and benefits as far as already available. A brief description of each technique together with the relevant state of the art is provided. Moreover, first considerations about the requirements on the system, especially regarding measurements, signalling, architecture and protocols are described. The last set of innovations will be ready for the final deliverable of proof of concept evaluation.

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A radio-interface concept for a ubiquitous WINNER radio system is presented and assessed, both in terms of performance and in terms of implementation complexity. The developed radio-interfaceconcept is a packet-oriented, user-centric, always-best concept targeting 100 Mbps sector-throughput forwide-area coverage and 1 Gbps for local-area coverage. It defines a scalable and flexible radio interfacebased on adaptive and compatible system modes that are tailored to particular situations such as the radioenvironment, the usage scenario, the economic model, etc. In contrast to the deliverable D7.6, whichfocuses on the functional architecture of the overall WINNER system concept, and D3.5, which describesprotocols and deployment concepts, the present deliverable focuses on the actual design of the radiointerface, primarily its lower layers, in order to enable optimisation and evaluation of performance. Results of extensive simulations on link, multi-link, and system levels are presented, supporting importantsystem design choices, exemplifying favourable configurations of the radio interface in differentscenarios, and providing an initial system performance estimation. Analyses of system complexity andimplementation issues are found not to reveal any major showstoppers that would prevent a cost-efficientimplementation at the time of deployment of the WINNER system.
