  • Extending the environmental lifetime of unpackaged perovskite solar cells through interfacial design
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 4:30, s. 11604-11610
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solution-processed oxo-functionalized graphene (oxo-G1) is employed to substitute hydrophilic PEDOT:PSS as an anode interfacial layer for perovskite solar cells. The resulting devices exhibit a reasonably high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.2% in the planar inverted architecture with oxo-G1 as a hole transporting material (HTM), and most importantly, deploy the full open-circuit voltage (Voc) of up to 1.1 V. Moreover, oxo-G1 effectively slows down the ingress of water vapor into the device stack resulting in significantly enhanced environmental stability of unpackaged cells under illumination with 80% of the initial PCE being reached after 500 h. Without encapsulation, ∼60% of the initial PCE is retained after ∼1000 h of light soaking under 0.5 sun and ambient conditions maintaining the temperature beneath 30 °C. Moreover, the unsealed perovskite device retains 92% of its initial PCE after about 1900 h under ambient conditions and in the dark. Our results underpin that controlling water diffusion into perovskite cells through advanced interface engineering is a crucial step towards prolonged environmental stability.

  • Novel genetic associations for blood pressure identified via gene-alcohol interaction in up to 570K individuals across multiple ancestries
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public library science. - 1932-6203. ; 13:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heavy alcohol consumption is an established risk factor for hypertension; the mechanism by which alcohol consumption impact blood pressure (BP) regulation remains unknown. We hypothesized that a genome-wide association study accounting for gene-alcohol consumption interaction for BP might identify additional BP loci and contribute to the understanding of alcohol-related BP regulation. We conducted a large two-stage investigation incorporating joint testing of main genetic effects and single nucleotide variant (SNV)-alcohol consumption interactions. In Stage 1, genome-wide discovery meta-analyses in approximate to 131 K individuals across several ancestry groups yielded 3,514 SNVs (245 loci) with suggestive evidence of association (P <1.0 x 10(-5)). In Stage 2, these SNVs were tested for independent external replication in individuals across multiple ancestries. We identified and replicated (at Bonferroni correction threshold) five novel BP loci (380 SNVs in 21 genes) and 49 previously reported BP loci (2,159 SNVs in 109 genes) in European ancestry, and in multi-ancestry meta-analyses (P < 5.0 x 10(-8)). For African ancestry samples, we detected 18 potentially novel BP loci (P< 5.0 x 10(-8)) in Stage 1 that warrant further replication. Additionally, correlated meta-analysis identified eight novel BP loci (11 genes). Several genes in these loci (e.g., PINX1, GATA4, BLK, FTO and GABBR2 have been previously reported to be associated with alcohol consumption. These findings provide insights into the role of alcohol consumption in the genetic architecture of hypertension.

  • Preparation and dielectric properties of La doped NBCCTO ceramics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electroceramics. - : Springer Nature. - 1385-3449 .- 1573-8663. ; 48:3, s. 117-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics have great dielectric constant, excellent temperature stability and good frequency stability. However, due to high dielectric loss, its practical application in engineering is hindered. In this paper, Na0.25Bi0.25LaxCa0.5-3x/2Cu3Ti4O12 (NBLCCTO) ceramics were prepared by solid phase synthesis. The effects of sintering temperature and La content on dielectric properties of NBLCCTO ceramics were studied. The results show when the sintering temperature is 1030celcius and La content is 0.05, NBLCCTO ceramics show better dielectric properties. Its dielectric constant has epsilon(r) = 22,231 at 1 kHz and its dielectric loss is 0.0546 at 10 kHz. Appropriate doping of La can lead to grain refinement and enlarge specific surface area of grain boundary, thus increasing resistivity and reducing dielectric loss. Therefore, NBLCCTO ceramics have lower dielectric loss than Na0.25Bi0.25Ca0.5Cu3Ti4O12 (NBCCTO).

    • Cell therapy has been shown to be a key clinical therapeutic option for central nervous system diseases or damage. Standardization of clinical cell therapy procedures is an important task for professional associations devoted to cell therapy. The Chinese Branch of the International Association of Neurorestoratology (IANR) completed the first set of guidelines governing the clinical application of neurorestoration in 2011. The IANR and the Chinese Association of Neurorestoratology (CANR) collaborated to propose the current version "Clinical Cell Therapy Guidelines for Neurorestoration (IANR/CANR 2017)". The IANR council board members and CANR committee members approved this proposal on September 1, 2016, and recommend it to clinical practitioners of cellular therapy. These guidelines include items of cell type nomenclature, cell quality control, minimal suggested cell doses, patient-informed consent, indications for undergoing cell therapy, contraindications for undergoing cell therapy, documentation of procedure and therapy, safety evaluation, efficacy evaluation, policy of repeated treatments, do not charge patients for unproven therapies, basic principles of cell therapy, and publishing responsibility.

  • Directional dominance on stature and cognition in diverse human populations
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 523:7561, s. 459-462

    • Homozygosity has long been associated with rare, often devastating, Mendelian disorders, and Darwin was one of the first to recognize that inbreeding reduces evolutionary fitness. However, the effect of the more distant parental relatedness that is common in modern human populations is less well understood. Genomic data now allow us to investigate the effects of homozygosity on traits of public health importance by observing contiguous homozygous segments (runs of homozygosity), which are inferred to be homozygous along their complete length. Given the low levels of genome-wide homozygosity prevalent in most human populations, information is required on very large numbers of people to provide sufficient power. Here we use runs of homozygosity to study 16 health-related quantitative traits in 354,224 individuals from 102 cohorts, and find statistically significant associations between summed runs of homozygosity and four complex traits: height, forced expiratory lung volume in one second, general cognitive ability and educational attainment (P < 1 × 10(-300), 2.1 × 10(-6), 2.5 × 10(-10) and 1.8 × 10(-10), respectively). In each case, increased homozygosity was associated with decreased trait value, equivalent to the offspring of first cousins being 1.2 cm shorter and having 10 months' less education. Similar effect sizes were found across four continental groups and populations with different degrees of genome-wide homozygosity, providing evidence that homozygosity, rather than confounding, directly contributes to phenotypic variance. Contrary to earlier reports in substantially smaller samples, no evidence was seen of an influence of genome-wide homozygosity on blood pressure and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, or ten other cardio-metabolic traits. Since directional dominance is predicted for traits under directional evolutionary selection, this study provides evidence that increased stature and cognitive function have been positively selected in human evolution, whereas many important risk factors for late-onset complex diseases may not have been.

  • Visions of Social Competence: Comparing Engineering Education Accreditation in Australia, China, Sweden, and the United States
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition, Conference Proceedings. - 2153-5965.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on a cross-cultural analysis of central accreditation requirements for engineering programs—focusing especially on issues related to social impact, social responsibility, and social analysis—in four different countries: Australia, China, Sweden and the United States. Upon comparing and contrasting the accreditation requirements documents and their treatment of “social” capabilities, we found that: I. Accreditation requirements in all four countries are similarly oriented to specific student-learning outcomes, where technical and social capabilities represent roughly equal proportions of the total number of requirements. II. Social capabilities represent a wide range of competencies, including very high-order social-analytic competencies (e.g., understanding the relationship between engineering and its social context). III. Important variations can be identified in how social capabilities are understood, with four distinct categories emerging: Social capabilities 1) as constraints, 2) as awareness, 3) as responsibility, and 4) as cultivation. After reviewing, categorizing, and analyzing the key ways social-analytic competencies are articulated and understood in the four countries’ accreditation documents, we identify key opportunities and challenges facing those seeking better integration of social competencies in engineering education. We conclude the paper with a review of our findings and our next steps.

  • Implicating genes, pleiotropy, and sexual dimorphism at blood lipid loci through multi-ancestry meta-analysis.

  • Ingår i: Genome biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1474-760X .- 1465-6906 .- 1474-7596. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic variants within nearly 1000 loci are known to contribute to modulation of blood lipid levels. However, the biological pathways underlying these associations are frequently unknown, limiting understanding of these findings and hindering downstream translational efforts such as drug target discovery. To expand our understanding of the underlying biological pathways and mechanisms controlling blood lipid levels, we leverage a large multi-ancestry meta-analysis (N=1,654,960) of blood lipids to prioritize putative causal genes for 2286 lipid associations using six gene prediction approaches. Using phenome-wide association (PheWAS) scans, we identify relationships of genetically predicted lipid levels to other diseases and conditions. We confirm known pleiotropic associations with cardiovascular phenotypes and determine novel associations, notably with cholelithiasis risk. We perform sex-stratified GWAS meta-analysis of lipid levels and show that 3-5% of autosomal lipid-associated loci demonstrate sex-biased effects. Finally, we report 21 novel lipid loci identified on the X chromosome. Many of the sex-biased autosomal and X chromosome lipid loci show pleiotropic associations with sex hormones, emphasizing the role of hormone regulation in lipid metabolism.Taken together, our findings provide insights into the biological mechanisms through which associated variants lead to altered lipid levels and potentially cardiovascular disease risk.

  • One thousand plant transcriptomes and the phylogenomics of green plants
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 574:7780, s. 679-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green plants (Viridiplantae) include around 450,000-500,000 species(1,2) of great diversity and have important roles in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Here, as part of the One Thousand Plant Transcriptomes Initiative, we sequenced the vegetative transcriptomes of 1,124 species that span the diversity of plants in a broad sense (Archaeplastida), including green plants (Viridiplantae), glaucophytes (Glaucophyta) and red algae (Rhodophyta). Our analysis provides a robust phylogenomic framework for examining the evolution of green plants. Most inferred species relationships are well supported across multiple species tree and supermatrix analyses, but discordance among plastid and nuclear gene trees at a few important nodes highlights the complexity of plant genome evolution, including polyploidy, periods of rapid speciation, and extinction. Incomplete sorting of ancestral variation, polyploidization and massive expansions of gene families punctuate the evolutionary history of green plants. Notably, we find that large expansions of gene families preceded the origins of green plants, land plants and vascular plants, whereas whole-genome duplications are inferred to have occurred repeatedly throughout the evolution of flowering plants and ferns. The increasing availability of high-quality plant genome sequences and advances in functional genomics are enabling research on genome evolution across the green tree of life.

  • Incorporation of Designed Donor−Acceptor−Donor Segments in a Host Polymer for Strong Near-Infrared Emission from a Large-Area Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cell
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Energy Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2574-0962. ; 1:4, s. 1753-1761
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cost-efficient thin-film devices that emit in the nearinfrared (NIR) range promise a wide range of important applications. Here, the synthesis and NIR application of a series of copolymers comprising poly[indacenodithieno[3,2- b ]thiophene-2,8-diyl] (PIDTT) as the host and different donor−acceptor−donor (DAD) segments as the guest are reported. We find that a key design criterion for efficient solid-state host-to-guest energy transfer is that the DAD conformation is compatible with the conformation of the host. Such host−guest copolymers are evaluated as the emitter in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) and organic light-emitting diodes, and the best performance is invariably attained from the LEC devices because of the observed balanced electrochemical doping that alleviates issues with a noncentered emission zone. An LEC device comprising a host−guest copolymer with 4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4 H -silolo[3,2- b :4,5- b′ ]dithiophene as the donor and benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazole as the acceptor delivers an impressive near-infrared (NIR) performance in the form of a high radiance of 1458 μ W/cm2 at a peak wavelength of 725 nm when driven by a current density of 500 mA/cm2, a second-fast turn-on, and a good stress stability as manifested in a constant radiance output during 3 days of uninterrupted operation. The high-molecular-weight copolymer features excellent processability, and the potential for low-cost and scalable NIR applications is verified through a spray-coating fabrication of a >40 cm2 large-area device, which emits intense and uniform NIR light at a low drive voltage of 4.5 V.

  • A multi-ancestry genome-wide study incorporating gene-smoking interactions identifies multiple new loci for pulse pressure and mean arterial pressure
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press. - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 28:15, s. 2615-2633
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elevated blood pressure (BP), a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, is influenced by both genetic and lifestyle factors. Cigarette smoking is one such lifestyle factor. Across five ancestries, we performed a genome-wide gene–smoking interaction study of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and pulse pressure (PP) in 129 913 individuals in stage 1 and follow-up analysis in 480 178 additional individuals in stage 2. We report here 136 loci significantly associated with MAP and/or PP. Of these, 61 were previously published through main-effect analysis of BP traits, 37 were recently reported by us for systolic BP and/or diastolic BP through gene–smoking interaction analysis and 38 were newly identified (P < 5 × 10−8, false discovery rate < 0.05). We also identified nine new signals near known loci. Of the 136 loci, 8 showed significant interaction with smoking status. They include CSMD1 previously reported for insulin resistance and BP in the spontaneously hypertensive rats. Many of the 38 new loci show biologic plausibility for a role in BP regulation. SLC26A7 encodes a chloride/bicarbonate exchanger expressed in the renal outer medullary collecting duct. AVPR1A is widely expressed, including in vascular smooth muscle cells, kidney, myocardium and brain. FHAD1 is a long non-coding RNA overexpressed in heart failure. TMEM51 was associated with contractile function in cardiomyocytes. CASP9 plays a central role in cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Identified only in African ancestry were 30 novel loci. Our findings highlight the value of multi-ancestry investigations, particularly in studies of interaction with lifestyle factors, where genomic and lifestyle differences may contribute to novel findings.

  • Reduction of the sintering temperature and dielectric loss of the CCTO ceramic by doping tellurite glass
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ceramics International. - : Elsevier. - 0272-8842 .- 1873-3956. ; 47:7, Part A, s. 10006-10012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics can be modified by a multi-component glass system, which shows an influence on the improvement of the sintering process and dielectric properties. In this work, we fabricate the low dielectric loss CCTO ceramics at a low sintering temperature by using the tellurite glass of TBZCBS (TeO2-B2O3-ZnO-CaO-BaO-SrO) as an additive. The study manifests that the sintering temperature of TBZCBSdoped CCTO ceramics could be reduced to 1030 degrees C when the amount of TBZCBS glass is 10 wt%, decreasing 70 degrees C compared to the CCTO ceramic without using an additive. Simultaneously, its loss tangent value at 1 kHz can also decline to similar to 0.0174 from similar to 0.1783. Moreover, we also concluded that the electric properties of TBZCBS-doped CCTO ceramics relate to the amount of TBZCBS glass. The nonlinear J-V properties and breakthrough electric field are improved with an increase of the TBZCBS glass content, confirming the dielectric properties and the electric properties are mainly relevant to the grain boundary properties of CCTO ceramics.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Chemistry of Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5002 .- 0897-4756. ; 29:18, s. 7750-7759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the synthesis, characterization, and application of a series of metal-free near-infrared (NIR) emitting alternating donor/acceptor copolymers based on indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene (IDTT) as the donor unit. A light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC), comprising a blend of the copolymer poly[indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,8-diyl-alt-2,3-diphenyl-5,8-di(thiophen-2-y1)- quinoxaline-5,5'-diy1] and an ionic liquid as the single-layer active material sandwiched between two air-stable electrodes, delivered NIR emission (lambda(peak) = 705 nm) with a high radiance of 129 mu W/cm(2) when driven by a low voltage of 3.4 V. The NIR-LEC also featured good stress stability, as manifested in that the peak NIR output from a nonencapsulated device after 24 h of continuous operation only had dropped by 3% under N-2 atmosphere and by 27% under ambient air. This work accordingly introduces IDTT-based donor/acceptor copolymers as functional metal-free electroluminescent materials in NIR-emitting devices and also provides guidelines for how future NIR emitters should be designed for further improved performance.

  • Technical-Social Integration in Engineering Education: Comparing Accreditation Requirements in Australia, China, Sweden, and the United States
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Presented at 5th Annual Symposium on Engineering & Liberal Education. June 1-3, 2012. Union College, Schenectady, NY..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This project analyzes accreditation documents in four countries—Australia, China, Sweden, and the US—as a way to explore opportunities for and barriers to integrating technical and social aspects of engineering education. The cross-national comparison also seeks to shed light on the following two questions: 1. How can accreditation facilitate the education of socially competent engineers through encouraging the integration of technical and social aspects of engineering education? 2. What capabilities do different nations expect from engineers?

  • Coverage Performance of Joint Transmission for Moving Relay Enabled Cellular Networks in Dense Urban Scenarios
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - 2169-3536 .- 2169-3536. ; 5, s. 13001-13009
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Communication plays a significant role in terms of providing connectivity for urban users as well as sensors in smart cities. It has been shown that better communication capability for vehicular users can be obtained by introducing moving relays (MRs). With MRs, it is possible for macro base stations and moving relays to serve non-vehicular macro-users by performing coordinated multipoint (CoMP) joint transmission (JT). A bias-based CoMP scheme for MR enabled cellular network is analyzed in this paper. Motivated by antenna design constraints, in this paper, we assume that the outdoor antenna system of the MR can only be used for the moving backhaul link, i.e., the in-vehicle antenna system is also serving the non-vehicular macro-users. Using the stochastic geometry approach, a tractable model of the network is proposed. Based on the proposed model, integral expressions for CoMP-JT probability and coverage probability of non-vehicular macro user equipment are derived. Simulations verify the accuracy of the derived expressions. The results show that the probability for macro user equipment to be served with CoMP-JT is up to 70% when the intensity of MRs is ten times that of MBSs. This paper also includes a performance comparison among the analyzed scheme and related works. CoMP-JT with MRs provides better coverage performance for nearby macro user equipment. It can be found that the coverage gain of CoMP increases when the intensity of MRs increases within a certain range. Simulation results provide insights for practical system design in smart cities, such as the optimal MR intensity and the feasibility for opening access of MRs to macro user equipment.

  • Preparation and characterization of SiC-ZAC composite material for immobilizing the simulated radioactive graphite
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Progress in nuclear energy (New series). - : Elsevier. - 0149-1970 .- 1878-4224. ; 143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the safe treatment and disposal of radioactive graphite, SiC-ZAC (ZAC: ZnO-Al2O3-CaO glass-ceramic) composite materials were designed, in which ZAC is used as a sintering additive. The performance of ZAC was firstly studied by ASTM C1285 leaching test to obtain a formula composition with high chemical stability. Then, using the optimized formula of ZAC, the SiC-ZAC composites were prepared by vacuum calcination at 1350 degrees C-1410 degrees C for the immobilizing of simulated radioactive graphite, and the structure and compositions of SiC-ZAC composites were studied by XRD, SEM, EDS. The material Gibbs free energy function method was used to calculate the thermodynamics of SiC-ZAC composites to investigate the reaction ways among Si, C and ZAC. The results show the Z30 (30 wt% ZnO, 44.91 wt% Al2O3, 25.09 wt% CaO) glass-ceramic is the applicable formula composition due to its high chemical stability, in which the normalized elemental mass loss of Zn, Al, Ca are 10(-)(6) g/m(2)-10(-)(5) g/m(2), 10(-1) g/m(2), 10(-1) g/m(2) respectively. Calcined at 1350 degrees C for 2 h, the B-Z30(0)-1(70.05 wt% Si, 29.95 wt% C) sample can be obtained with the phase compositions of beta-SiC, alpha-SiC and a small amount of residual graphite. Moreover, the formations of Ca2Al2SiO7 and CaAl4O7 crystalline phase had a negative effect on the immobilization of simulated radioactive graphite in SiC-ZAC composites.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 890
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The safe treatment and disposal of radioactive graphite waste is becoming an important issue worldwide. The objective of this paper is to prepare the SiC-ZAC (ZAC: ZnO-Al2O3-CaO) composite ceramic for immobilizing radioactive graphite, where ZAC is as sintering additives. The effects of the sintering system and ZAC content on the phase compositions, microstructure, and properties of SiC-ZAC composite ceramic are studied by XRD, SEM-EDS, TEM-EDS, linear shrinkage, Vickers hardness, and thermal conductivity. By vacuum hot pressing sintering at 1600 degrees C for 1 h, the results show that the S-35-160 0 (65 wt% SiC, 10.5 wt% ZnO, 15.72 wt% Al2O3, 8.78 wt% CaO) sample is the potentially applicable formula composition due to its better performance, in which the Vickers hardness and the thermal conductivity are 165.2 HV10, 14.6 W m(-1) k(-1) respectively, and the normalized elemental mass loss of Si, Al and Ca are 0.0064-0.0108 g/m(2), 21.4784-24.7837 g/m(2), 56.9108-67.5637 g/m(2) after 42 days at pH = 5/7/9 solution, respectively. Importantly, ZAC sintering additives can form the bond phases of CaAl4O7, CaAl2O4, Ca3Al2(OH)(12), and Ca2Al2SiO7 under relatively low temperatures to reduce the sintering temperature for SiC ceramics. Meanwhile, the existing form of the Zn element is revealed: one part of the Zn forms glass phase, and the other part volatilized by carbothermic reduction.
