  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Photostability and Photodegradation Processes in Colloidal CsPbI3 Perovskite Quantum Dots
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 10:45, s. 39222-39227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All-inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted intense attention for their successful application in photovoltaics (PVs) and optoelectronics that are enabled by their superior absorption capability and great photoluminescence (PL) properties. However, their photostability remains a practical bottleneck and further optimization is highly desirable. Here, we studied the photostability of as-obtained colloidal CsPbI3 QDs suspended in hexane. We found that light illumination does induce photodegradation of CsPbI3 QDs. Steady-state spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and transient absorption spectroscopy verified that light illumination leads to detachment of the capping agent, collapse of the CsPbI3 QD surface, and finally aggregation of surface Pb0. Both dangling bonds containing surface and Pb0 serve as trap states causing PL quenching with a dramatic decrease of PL quantum yield. Our work provides a detailed insight about the correlation between the structural and photophysical consequences of the photodegradation process in CsPbI3 QDs and may lead to the optimization of such QDs toward device applications.

  • Fluorenyl Indoline as an Efficient Electron Donor for Concerted Companion Dyes: Enhanced Light-Harvesting and Photocurrent
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 13:42, s. 49828-49839
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Concerted companion dyes (CC dyes) like XW61 have been demonstrated to be an effective platform for developing efficient DSSCs. However, the moderated phenothiazine-based electron donor in XW61 results in unsatisfactory J(sc). To address this problem, a stronger fluorenyl indoline-based electron donor has been used to construct porphyrin dye XW68 and organic dyes Y1-Y2. The stronger electron-donating character of the fluorenyl indoline unit leads to an enhanced J(sc) value (20.48 mA.cm(-2)) for the individual dye XW68. On this basis, CC dyes XW69-XW70-C8 have been designed and synthesized by combining the frameworks of Y1 and Y2 with XW68. The complementary absorption characters of the porphyrin and the organic dye moieties lead to panchromatic absorption with a strong light-harvesting capability from 350 to 700 nm and the onset wavelength extended to ca. 840 nm in the IPCE curves. As a result, excellent J(sc) values have been achieved (>22 mA.cm(-2)). In addition to the advantages of high J(sc), bulky octyl groups have been introduced into the donor of XW70-C8 to reduce dye aggregation and suppress charge recombination. Finally, a highest PCE of 11.1% with a satisfactory J(sc) (22.25 mA.cm(-2)) and an enhanced V-oc (750 mV) has been achieved upon coadsorption of XW70-C8 with CDCA. In addition, the CC dye XW70-C8-based solar cells exhibit excellent long-term photostability. These results provide an effective method for rationally improving the photovoltaic behavior, especially the J(sc) of CC dyes, by introducing strong electron donor moieties with suitable substituents.

  • Digital Nanoelectromechanical Non-Volatile Memory Cell
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Electron Device Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0741-3106 .- 1558-0563. ; 45:4, s. 728-731
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanoelectromechanical relays are inherently radiation hard and can operate at high temperatures. Thus, they have potential to serve as the building blocks in non-volatile memory that can be used in harsh environments with zero standby power. However, a reprogrammable memory cell built entirely from relays that can be operated with a digital protocol has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we demonstrate a fully mechanical digital non-volatile memory cell built from in-plane silicon nanoelectromechanical relays; a 7-terminal bistable relay utilizes surface adhesion forces to store binary data without consuming any energy, while 3-terminal relays are used for read and write access without the need for CMOS. We have optimized the designs to prevent collapse to the substrate under actuation and recorded voltages of 13, 13.2 and 27V for programming, read and reprogramming operations. This non-volatile memory cell can potentially be used to build embedded memories for edge applications that have stringent temperature, radiation and energy constraints.

  • Design and fabrication of a 4-terminal in-plane nanoelectromechanical relay
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present 4-terminal (4-T) silicon (Si) nanoelectronmechanical (NEM) relays fabricated on silicon-oninsulator (SOI) wafers. We demonstrate true 4-T switching behavior with isolated control and signal paths. A pull-in voltage as low as 11.6 V is achieved with the miniaturized design. 4-T NEM relays are a very promising candidate for building ultra-low-power logic circuits since they enable novel circuit architectures to realize logic functions with far fewer devices than CMOS implementations, while also allowing the dynamic power consumption to be reduced by body-biasing.

  • Integrated 4-terminal single-contact nanoelectromechanical relays implemented in a silicon-on-insulator foundry process
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Integrated nanoelectromechanical (NEM) relays can be used instead of transistors to implement ultra-low power logic circuits, due to their abrupt turn-off characteristics and zero off-state leakage. Further, realizing circuits with 4-terminal (4-T) NEM relays enables significant reduction in circuit device count compared to conventional transistor circuits. For practical 4-T NEM circuits, however, the relays need to be miniaturized and integrated with high-density back-end-of-line (BEOL) interconnects, which is challenging and has not been realized to date. Here, we present electrostatically actuated silicon 4-T NEM relays that are integrated with multi-layer BEOL metal interconnects, implemented using a commercial silicon-on-insulator (SOI) foundry process. We demonstrate 4-T switching and the use of body-biasing to reduce pull-in voltage of a relay with a 300 nm airgap, from 15.8 V to 7.8 V, consistent with predictions of the finite-element model. Our 4-T NEM relay technology enables new possibilities for realizing NEM-based circuits for applications demanding harsh environment computation and zero standby power, in industries such as automotive, Internet-of-Things, and aerospace.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 22nd International Conference on Solid-State Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems, Transducers 2023. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. ; , s. 537-541
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NEM relay-based circuits can operate in harsh environmental conditions, high temperatures and high levels of radiation, without consuming energy in standby mode. These attributes make NEM relay technology very attractive for edge computing applications in industrial and manufacturing sectors. Here we describe a complete hardware platform for designing and fabricating densely integrated NEM relay circuits, and discuss the design of several prototypes we are developing to showcase this technology.

  • Highly Stable Perovskite Supercrystals via Oil-in-Oil Templating
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 20:8, s. 5997-6004
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inorganic perovskites display an enticing foreground for their wide range of optoelectronic applications. Recently, supercrystals (SCs) of inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been reported to possess highly ordered structure as well as novel collective optical properties, opening new opportunities for efficient films. Here, we report the large-scale assembly control of spherical, cubic, and hexagonal SCs of inorganic perovskite NCs through templating by oil-in-oil emulsions. We show that an interplay between the roundness of the cubic NCs and the tension of the confining droplet surface sets the superstructure morphology, and we exploit this interplay to design dense hyperlattices of SCs. The SC films show strongly enhanced stability for at least two months without obvious structural degradation and minor optical changes. Our results on the controlled large-scale assembly of perovskite NC superstructures provide new prospects for the bottom-up production of optoelectronic devices based on the microfluidic production of mesoscopic building blocks.

  • Inorganic Ions Assisted the Anisotropic Growth of CsPbCl3 Nanowires with Surface Passivation Effect
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 10:35, s. 29574-29582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All-inorganic halide perovskite nanowires (NWs) exhibit improved thermal and hydrolysis stability and could thus play a vital role in nanoscale optoelectronics. Among them, blue-light-based devices are extremely limited because of the lack of a facile method to obtain high-purity CsPbCl3 NWs. Herein, we report a direct and facile method for the synthesis of CsPbCl3 NWs assisted by inorganic ions that served both as a morphology controlling agent for the anisotropic growth of nanomaterials and a surface passivation species modulating the surface of nanomaterials. This new approach allows us to obtain high-purity and size-uniform NWs as long as 500 nm in length and 20 nm in diameter with high reproducibility. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultrafast spectroscopic measurements confirmed that a reduced band gap caused by the surface species of NWs relative to nanocubes (NCs) was achieved at the photon energy of 160 eV because of the hybrid surface passivation contributed by adsorbed inorganic ions. The resulting NWs demonstrate significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical performances, 3.5-fold increase in the photocurrent generation, and notably improved stability compared to their NC counterparts. Our results suggest that the newly designed NWs could be a promising material for the development of nanoscale optoelectronic devices.

  • Lead-free double halide perovskite Cs 3 BiBr 6 with well-defined crystal structure and high thermal stability for optoelectronics
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7534 .- 2050-7526. ; 7:11, s. 3369-3374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Halide perovskites have continued to rise as attractive light absorber materials, mainly driven by their potential wide applications in the fields of solar cells, photodetectors, lasers and others. However, Pb-containing perovskites are poisonous and could cause serious potential problems to our environment. Thus, there is a strong desire to develop lead-free perovskites as environmentally friendly alternatives. Here, we have shown a successful synthesis of a non-toxic single crystalline double-halide perovskite, Cs 3 BiBr 6 , and analysed its structural characteristics in detail. This perovskite represents a new structure in terms of double-halide perovskites. The crystal structure features isolated BiBr 6 polyhedra forming a zero-dimensional halide perovskite. The bandgap of this compound is measured to be 2.55 eV. High thermal stability is also clearly shown in the Cs 3 BiBr 6 single crystal. A photodetector based on this compound is fabricated and tested, which exhibits an impressive detectivity of 0.8 × 10 9 Jones and low dark current under 400 nm light illumination. Overall, our results show that the Cs 3 BiBr 6 perovskite as a lead-free perovskite has interesting structures and promising properties for optoelectronic devices.

  • Photodetector Based on Spontaneously Grown Strongly Coupled MAPbBr3/N-rGO Hybrids Showing Enhanced Performance
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 12:1, s. 858-867
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, metal-halide perovskites have emerged as a candidate for optoelectronic applications such as photodetectors. However, the poor device performance and instability have limited their future commercialization. Herein, we report the spontaneous growth of perovskite/N-rGO hybrid structures using a facile solution method and their applications for photodetectors. In the hybrid structures, perovskites were homogeneously wrapped by N-rGO sheets through strong hydrogen bonding. The strongly coupled N-rGOs facilitate the charge carrier transportation across the perovskite crystals but also distort the surface lattice of the perovskite creating a potential barrier for charge transfer. We optimize the addition of N-rGO in the hybrid structures to balance interfacial structural distortion and the intercrystal conductivity. High-performance photodetection up to 3 × 104 A/W, external quantum efficiency exceeding 105%, and detectivity up to 1012 Jones were achieved in the optimal device with the weight ratio between perovskites and N-rGO to be 8:1.5. The underlying mechanism behind the optimal N-rGO addition ratio in the hybrids has also been rationalized via time-resolved spectroscopic studies as a reference for future applications.

  • Evaluation of precipitable water vapor from four satellite products and four reanalysis datasets against GPS measurements on the Southern Tibetan Plateau
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Climate. - 0894-8755. ; 30, s. 5699-5713
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017 American Meteorological Society. The southern Tibetan Plateau (STP) is the region in which water vapor passes from South Asia into the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The accuracy of precipitable water vapor (PWV) modeling for this region depends strongly on the quality of the available estimates of water vapor advection and the parameterization of land evaporation models. While climate simulation is frequently improved by assimilating relevant satellite and reanalysis products, this requires an understanding of the accuracy of these products. In this study, PWV data from MODIS infrared and near-infrared measurements, AIRS Level-2 and Level-3, MERRA, ERA-Interim, JRA-55, and NCEP final reanalysis (NCEP-Final) are evaluated against ground-based GPS measurements at nine stations over the STP, which covers the summer monsoon season from 2007 to 2013. The MODIS infrared product is shown to underestimate water vapor levels by more than 20% (1.84 mm), while the MODIS near-infrared product overestimates them by over 40% (3.52 mm). The AIRS PWV product appears to be most useful for constructing high-resolution and high-quality PWV datasets over the TP; particularly the AIRS Level-2 product has a relatively low bias (0.48 mm) and RMSE (1.83 mm) and correlates strongly with the GPS measurements (R = 0.90). The four reanalysis datasets exhibit similar performance in terms of their correlation coefficients (R = 0.87-0.90), bias (0.72-1.49 mm), and RMSE (2.19-2.35 mm). The key finding is that all the reanalyses have positive biases along the PWV seasonal cycle, which is linked to the well-known wet bias over the TP of current climate models.
