    • The Suaineadh project aims at testing the controlled deployment and stabilization of space web. The deployment system is based on a simple yet ingenious control of the centrifugal force that will pull each of the four daughters sections apart. The four daughters are attached onto the four corners of a square web, and will be released from their initial stowed configuration attached to a central hub. Enclosed in the central hub is a specifically designed spinning reaction wheel that controls the rotational speed with a closed loop control fed by measurements from an onboard inertial measurement sensor. Five other such sensors located within the web and central hub provide information on the surface curvature of the web, and progression of the deployment. Suaineadh is currently at an advanced stage of development: all the components are manufactured with the subsystems integrated and are presently awaiting full integration and testing. This paper will present the current status of the Suaineadh project and the results of the most recent set of tests. In particular, the paper will cover the overall mechanical design of the system, the electrical and sensor assemblies, the communication and power systems and the spinning wheel with its control system.

    • Increasing engine power to volume density is under investigation and being analysed extensively. Turbocharger, which is used to boost volumetric efficiency, also raises cylinder temperature and pressure, thus resulting in thermal distortions and reducing clearances in tribo-contacts, thereby compromising engine life. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have shown potential to provide remedies to reduce heat losses, hazardous emissions, and heat flow toward the piston skirt in an internal combustion engine. In this study, a detailed thermo-mechanical analysis was performed for a diesel engine piston with a novel yttrium barium zirconate (YBZ) coating and then compared with other TBCs with varying thicknesses. The results revealed a notable decrease in piston substrate surface temperature when coated with various TBCs, with YBZ coating demonstrating superior performance over others. The 0.2 mm coating of YBZ-coated piston exhibited significant reductions of 15% and 10.3% in temperature and thermal stress respectively, thus enhancing piston durability. The better performance of the novel YBZ coating could be attributed to its stable thermal and elastic properties and lower thermal conductivity than other TBC materials. YBZ coating provides a promising solution to improve engine efficiency while extending engine life, making it an attractive option for the automotive industry.

    • Contribution: In this study, we accumulated the knowledge and generated evidence on how and in what context CDIO framework has been used in software engineering (SE) education. The aggregated evidence will enable SE academics in making informed decisions while adopting CDIO for SE education and build upon it. Background: CDIO framework is relevant for SE as it focuses on enabling engineering graduates in conceiving, designing, implementing, and operating complex systems and products. We were not able to find any study that identifies and aggregates the evidence on the use of CDIO for SE education. Research Questions: This study attempts to answer the following research questions: 1) how CDIO has been used in SE education? and 2) what are the experiences of academics in applying the CDIO framework in SE education? Methodology: Using a mixed-method approach (systematic mapping study and interview study with experienced academics in SE), we established the state of the art and practice on the use of CDIO in SE education. Findings: Getting a commitment from the higher management, teachers, and students is a major challenge in the adoption of the CDIO initiative followed by a lack of competence, finance, and resources. Ownership, motivation, persistence, and training of teachers and students are required not only to adopt CDIO for SE but also to sustain it.
