  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Simultaneous operation of two soft x-ray free-electron lasers driven by one linear accelerator
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extreme-ultraviolet to x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) in operation for scientific applications are up to now single-user facilities. While most FELs generate around 100 photon pulses per second, FLASH at DESY can deliver almost two orders of magnitude more pulses in this time span due to its superconducting accelerator technology. This makes the facility a prime candidate to realize the next step in FELs-dividing the electron pulse trains into several FEL lines and delivering photon pulses to several users at the same time. Hence, FLASH has been extended with a second undulator line and self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) is demonstrated in both FELs simultaneously. FLASH can now deliver MHz pulse trains to two user experiments in parallel with individually selected photon beam characteristics. First results of the capabilities of this extension are shown with emphasis on independent variation of wavelength, repetition rate, and photon pulse length.

  • The determination of ecological status in shallow lakes - a tested system (ECOFRAME) for implementation of the European Water Framework Directive
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems. - : Wiley. - 1052-7613. ; 13:6, s. 507-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. The European Water Framework Directive requires the determination of ecological status in European fresh and saline waters. This is to be through the establishment of a typology of surface water bodies, the determination of reference (high status) conditions in each element (ecotype) of the typology and of lower grades of status (good, moderate, poor and bad) for each ecotype. It then requires classification of the status of the water bodies and their restoration to at least 'good status' in a specified period. 2. Though there are many methods for assessing water quality, none has the scope of that defined in the Directive. The provisions of the Directive require a wide range of variables to be measured and give only general guidance as to how systems of classification should be established. This raises issues of comparability across States and of the costs of making the determinations. 3. Using expert workshops and subsequent field testing, a practicable pan-European typology and classification system has been developed for shallow lakes, which can easily be extended to all lakes. It is parsimonious in its choice of determinands, but based on current limnological understanding and therefore as cost-effective as possible. 4. A core typology is described, which can be expanded easily in particular States to meet local conditions. The core includes 48 ecotypes across the entire European climate gradient and incorporates climate, lake area, geology of the catchment and conductivity. 5. The classification system is founded on a liberal interpretation of Annexes in the Directive and uses variables that are inexpensive to measure and ecologically relevant. The need for taxonomic expertise is minimized. 6. The scheme has been through eight iterations, two of which were tested in the field on tranches of 66 lakes. The final version, Version 8, is offered for operational testing and further refinement by statutory authorities.

  • Giant magneto-optical Faraday effect of graphene on Co in the soft x-ray range
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 98:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using polarization analysis of linearly polarized synchrotron radiation we demonstrate the existence of a giant magneto-optical Faraday effect at the carbon 1s edge of single-layer graphene on Co, reaching Faraday rotation angles of 2.9 x 10(5)deg/mm. This value is of the order of those observed at the Co 3p and 2p edges. Using element-selective magnetic hysteresis curves we find that graphene on Co exhibits ferromagnetic order. The magnetism in graphene is found to be carried by and be strongly enhanced by aligned n orbitals of carbon atoms. It is induced by hybridization with the Co 3d(z)2 orbitals while carbon a bonds show negligible magnetism due to insignificant hybridization with Co. From additional x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and transversal magneto-optical Kerr effect spectra a magnetic moment of 0.14 mu(B) is estimated for graphene. From Faraday spectra the complete set of x-ray magneto-optical constants of graphene has been deduced which allows for future modeling of magneto-optical devices based on graphene. The strong magnetism in graphene results from hybridization of carbon p(z) and metal 3d orbitals. Atoms of the graphene sublattice A, placed on top of Co, lead to strongest hybridization with Co 3d(z)( )(2)orbitals. Carbon atoms of sublattice B, and those of rotated graphene domains without Co atoms beneath, hybridize with each other and with 3d(xy) and 3d(yz) orbitals of neighboring Co atoms forming tilted p(z) bonds. We show that the related reduction of A-B symmetry leads to a splitting of the spin-polarized density of conduction-band states which is responsible for the strong magneto-optical Faraday effect.

  • Magneto-optical reflection spectroscopy on graphene/Co in the soft x-ray range
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics, Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 903
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The existence of ferromagnetic ordering in graphene on cobalt is demonstrated by means of resonant magnetic reflection spectroscopy exploiting the transversal magneto-optical Kerr-effect (T-MOKE). Using linearly polarized synchrotron radiation in the soft x-ray range with energies spanning the carbon 1s edge, the π- and σ- bonds of graphene were excited individually, showing that magnetism in graphene is carried by the π – orbitals. Magnetic signals were detected over a wide energy range from 257 – 340 eV with a T-MOKE peak value of 1.1 % at the π – resonance energy near 285 eV. By comparison with corresponding spectra measured at the 2p edges of the Co substrate, a large induced magnetic moment of 0.14 μB was derived for graphene. Individual hysteresis curves monitored at the Co 2p and C 1s edges show that the carbon magnetism is induced by the Co substrate.

  • Assessment of the management of carcinomatous meningitis from breast cancer globally: a study by the Breast International Group Brain Metastasis Task Force
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ESMO Open. - : Elsevier BV. - 2059-7029. ; 7:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Carcinomatous meningitis (CM) is a severe complication of breast cancer. The Breast International Group (BIG) carried out a survey to describe the approach to CM internationally. Patients and methods: A questionnaire on the management of CM was developed by the Brain Metastases Task Force of BIG and distributed to its groups, requesting one answer per group site. Results: A total of 241 sites responded, 119 from Europe, 9 from North America, 39 from Central/South America, 58 from Asia, and 16 in Australia/New Zealand, with 24.5% being general hospitals with oncology units, 44.4% university hospitals, 22.4% oncology centers, and 8.7% private hospitals. About 56.0% of sites reported seeing <5 cases annually with 60.6% reporting no increase in the number of cases of CM recently. Nearly 63.1% of sites investigate for CM when a patient has symptoms or radiological evidence, while 33.2% investigate only for symptoms. For diagnosis, 71.8% of sites required a positive cerebrospinal fluid cytology, while magnetic resonance imaging findings were sufficient in 23.7% of sites. Roughly 97.1% of sites treat CM and 51.9% also refer patients to palliative care. Intrathecal therapy is used in 41.9% of sites, mainly with methotrexate (74.3%). As many as 20 centers have a national registry for patients with breast cancer with central nervous system metastases and of those 5 have one for CM. Most (90.9%) centers would be interested in participating in a registry as well as in studies for CM, the latter preferably (62.1%) breast cancer subtype specific. Conclusions: This is the first study to map out the approach to CM from breast cancer globally. Although guidelines with level 1 evidence are lacking, there is a high degree of homogeneity in the approach to CM globally and great interest for conducting studies in this area.

  • Involvement of eccentric muscle actions in giant slalom racing.
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. - 0195-9131 .- 1530-0315. ; 27:12, s. 1666-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Joint angular movements and muscle activation (EMG), were determined in male elite racers while performing the giant slalom. Movement cycles averaged 3.5 +/- 0.6 s (left plus right turn), and knee angle ranged 66-114 degrees (180 degrees = straight leg). Knee extensor muscle use was dominated (rectified EMG; P < 0.05) by the leg controlling the outside (downhill) ski during the turn. Time spent while decreasing knee angle (eccentric muscle action) of outside leg averaged 1.0 +/- 0.2 s. This phase was longer (P < 0.05) than the average push-off (concentric muscle action) phase of 0.5 +/- 0.1 s. Moreover, EMG activity of the outside leg during eccentric muscle actions exceeded (P < 0.05) that of concentric actions and was similar to that attained during maximum isometric knee extension in laboratory tests. Knee and hip angular movement ranged 20-50 degrees. Average joint velocities equalled 20-40 degrees.s(-1) during the turning phase. Thus, competitive giant slalom skiing is dominated by slow eccentric muscle actions performed at near maximum voluntary force. Because of their greater ability to generate force, eccentric muscle actions may be warranted or even required to resist the G-forces induced during the turn phase.

  • Signal intensity of MR-images of thigh muscles following acute open- and closed chain kinetic knee extensor exercise – index of muscle use
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Applied Physiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1439-6319 .- 1439-6327. ; 94:4, s. 357-363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exercise-induced shifts in signal intensity (SI) of magnetic resonance (MR) images were examined to assess indirectly muscle use in closed- and open-chain knee extensor exercises. Eight men performed five sets of 8–12 repetitions in the leg press (LP) and the seated knee extension (KE) exercises at 50, 75 and 100%, respectively of the 5·10 repetition maximum (RM) load. Prior to exercise and after each load setting, images of the thigh were obtained. The increase in SI (D SI) of the quadriceps at 100% load was greater (P<0.05) after KE (32.1±9.0%) than after LP (21.9±9.2%). Regardless of load, the four individual muscles of the quadriceps showed similar changes in SI after LP. The three vastii muscles showed comparable increases in SI after KE. M. rectus femoris showed greater (P<0.05) D SI than the vastii muscles at 100%. Neither exercise produced increase in SI of mm. semimembranosus, semitendinosus, gracilis or biceps femoris. Mm. adductor magnus and longus showed increased (13.3±6.5%; P<0.05) SI after LP, but not after KE, at 100% load. The present data also infer greater involvement of the quadriceps muscle in the open-chain knee extension than in the closedchain leg press exercise. The results of the current investigation also indicate similar over-all use among the three vastii muscles in LP and KE, but ifferential m. rectus femoris use between the two exercises. This report extends the merits of the MR imaging technique as an aid to study individual muscle involvement in a particular exercise task.

  • Influence of the crystal structure of thin Co films on X-ray magnetic linear dichroism-Comparison of ab initio theory and reflectometry experiments
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 115:17, s. 17E132-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report an investigation of the influence of the crystal structure of Co thin films on the X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) spectrum. We compare XMLD spectra measured in reflection at the 3p-edges for two distinct orientations of the magnetization in the crystalline Co film with ab initio calculated spectra. The latter was computed for the face-centered cubic as well as the hexagonal-close packed crystal structures of Co. We find that the XMLD signal is strongly dependent on the magnetization direction with respect to the crystal axes as well as strongly influenced by the crystal structure. • Interference Effects in T-MOKE Spectra of Fe Thin Films at the 3p Edges - Theory and Experiment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. A. - 0587-4246 .- 1898-794X. ; 127:2, s. 466-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present combined first-principle calculations and experimental results of the transversal magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE) of thin Fe films across the 3p edges using linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. We show that the experimental T-MOKE spectra at the 3p edges of Fe exhibit clear signals that are strongly influenced by interference effects. Ab initio calculated T-MOKE asymmetry spectra confirm the importance of interference effects. The comparison of experimental with calculated spectra reveals some differences that we attribute to metal/metal interface roughness that is not taken into account in the calculations.

  • Differential expression of nitric oxide synthases (NOS 1-3) in human skeletal muscle following exercise countermeasure during 12 weeks of bed rest.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: The F A S E B Journal. - 0892-6638. ; 18:11, s. 1228-1230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nitric oxide (NO) generated from NO synthases mediates normal skeletal muscle functions. Biosynthesis of NO apparently is linked to muscle activity, but the distribution and expression of the three major NO synthase 1-3 isoforms under conditions of extended muscle disuse and exercise are still unclear. Our aim was to elucidate whether protein levels and the cellular or subcellular localization patterns of NO synthases underwent significant changes in a mixed fast/slow and slow type skeletal muscle after prolonged disuse in a long-term bed rest study, a useful experimental paradigm of simulated microgravity in ground-based space research. We examined whether resistance exercise performed regularly as a countermeasure to progressive atrophy within 12 wk of strict bed rest would support expression of one or more isoforms of NOS, thereby maintaining normal skeletal muscle functions during immobilization in clinical settings or in human spaceflight.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 89:14, s. 140404-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • X-ray magnetic linear dichroism spectra measured in reflection (XMLD-R) on crystalline bcc Fe thin films across the 3 p absorption edges are reported. A series of measurements with varying orientation of the electric field vector of the linear polarized synchrotron radiation with respect to the crystal axes reveals a strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the XMLD-R spectra. The spectra agree well with theoretical spectra calculated within the framework of the density-functional theory accounting for the spin-orbital and exchange splitting of the 3 p semicore states on an equal footing.
