- This book analyses the waves of protests, from spontaneous uprisings to well-organized forms of collective action, which have shaken European cities over the last decade. It shows how analysing these protests in connection with the structural context of neoliberal urbanism and its crises is more productive than standard explanations. Processes of neoliberalisation have caused deeply segregated urban landscapes defined by deepening social inequality, rising unemployment, racism, securitization of urban spaces and welfare state withdrawal, particularly from poor peripheral areas, where tensions between marginalized youth and police often manifest in public spaces. Challenging a conventional distinction made in research on protest, the book integrates a structural analysis of processes of large scale urban transformation with analyses of the relationship between 'riots' and social movement action in nine countries: France, Greece, England, Germany, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Sweden and Turkey.

- Det här är en handbok som skrivits för att användas praktiskt i kampen om hyresrättens framtid. Boken har växt fram ur gemensamma erfarenheter av att ta strid mot renoveringar med höga hyreshöjningar som följd. Det har gett oss både kunskaper om lokal organisering och en övertygelse om vikten av att hyresgäster ska ha rätt till att påverka framtiden i de bostadsområden de bor i. De senaste åren har vi kunnat se hur hyreslägenheter renoveras med omfattande hyreshöjningar som följd. Konsekvenserna har blivit att många hyresgäster har tvingats flytta, ibland från bostadsområden de bott i under lång tid, då de inte längre har råd att betala hyran. Om inte hyresgäster går samman och kräver sina rättigheter kommer inget förändras och flera tusentals människor tvingas flytta. Den här handboken ska användas som ett praktiskt verktyg för lokal organisering. Vi som har gjort den här boken är engagerade i olika rörelser, några av oss är också forskare med inriktning mot bostad- spolitik och stadsutveckling. Boken har tillkommit genom en kollektiv process, där många varit inblandade för att bidra med sina erfarenheter och perspektiv. En lista med alla medverkande inklusive de rörelser som står bakom den här boken finns lägst bak.

- I samband med det forskningsprojektet Ingrepp genomfördes en Ingreppfestival med avseende på att i ett öppet publikt sammanhang diskutera utgångspunkterna forskningsgruppen formulerat i tabloiden Ingrepp – en tidning om städer, planering och konst, vilket delades ut gratis en vecka innan festivalen. I tidningen hittade man läsning kring städer, stadsutveckling, konst och konstnärlig forskning vilken hade bäring på den utvecklingsprocess som pågick och pågår på Södra Älvstranden i Göteborg. Både tabloiden och festivalen var ett direkt uttryck för gruppen vilja att ta ut diskussionen på gatan och i sitt sammanhang, men också ett sätt att pröva konstens och akademins möjligheter att gripa in och delta i samhälleliga skeenden. Festivalen vilken turnerade runt på fyra platser under fyra dagar längs Södra Älvstranden innefattade allt ifrån inbjudna samtal/debatter/seminarier till workshops kring Södra Älvstrandens framtid till tipspromenader, picnics och olika former av performativa iscensättningar under bar himmel.

- The original AIDAH environment intends to generate cross-disciplinary research and implementation projects for a sustainable built environment that confront three major challenges. (1) Increasingly diverse demands on the housing market call for flexibility and adaptability in resilient ways. (2) An ageing society requires new residential models that combine dignity and appropriate care but also provide good working environments for personnel. (3) Profound changes in technical conditions for caring and medical treatment necessitate rethinking traditional healthcare situations, developing new situations ranging from complex care in residence to intensive care units in hospital and patient hotels. Sustainability issues at stake in patterns of residential behaviour must be considered to have paramount importance in any strategy for a resilient urban future. The involved teams provide different and complementary perspectives focusing on the common notion of quality of residence considered in architectural, spatial and experiential properties of built environments for housing and healthcare contexts. The applied conceptual and theoretical framework focuses on architectural and caring innovations for reconfigured spatial situations that enhance sustainable caring, and improve health, welfare, and living quality. Our research effort will focus on identifying and characterizing strategies directed towards the integration of different ways of residing. The scientific integration in conceptual and methodological terms between architecture qualitative research, sociology of residence, and caring sciences is intended to bridge gaps and initiate cross disciplinary approaches. Objectives include identifying and articulating new resilient qualities in designs supporting care processes and healing environments, thereby providing new operational knowledge developed in close collaboration with diverse stakeholders. International exchanges will provide further strategic evidence-based design support for decision makers in planning, building and healthcare services. The cross-disciplinary teams of researchers from architectural design, social and caring sciences are based at the Centre for Healthcare Architecture and the CIB W069 Residential Studies, both hosted by Chalmers.

- Among a number of proposals regarding ‘late’ forms of urban neoliberalism, it has recently been argued that urban entreprenurialism has become ‘common sense’ or even ‘dull compulsion’. In this article, we contribute to this discussion by exploring the structural conditions and local strategies for normalizing city-centre-oriented urban entrepreneurialism in a Swedish context. In doing so, we return to an important but sometimes overlooked aspect of David Harvey's original concept: the delicate act of organizing urban entrepreneurialism across public and private spheres of the local polity. From this perspective, the act of making urban entrepreneurialism normal is far from ‘dull compulsion’. Drawing on longitudinal case studies of two different public-private partnerships related to city centre development in the two largest Swedish cities, we highlight the active use of sly, or cunning, de-politicization strategies among local elite actors. Our analysis leads to the more general claim that we should expect similar sly de-politicization strategies to be necessary for normalizing urban entrepreneurialism in political contexts characterized by relatively strong local authorities, and in relation to spaces and topics of interest to many and diverse actors.

- The varying conditions for different groups of people - men, women, couples and families - risking eviction and in a situation of homelessness have not attracted much attention as a research area in Sweden, although their needs are an issue which is emphasized among practitioners. This article deals with the ultimately political question of how the assumed special needs and characteristics of homeless people are discussed and responded to in existing social services and housing provisions. It presents, specifically, an analysis of the way in which constructions of gender differences affect formal and informal Swedish homelessness policies, as well as the outcome of these policies for the homeless people concerned. Discourse theory and the concepts of street-level bureaucracy and gender are the main theoretical tools. The article focuses on the intersection of discourses on homelessness and gender in order to understand the organization of help offered to households risking eviction and to homeless people.

- Changes underway in the global economy have changed the governance of cities where private and public partnerships plays a central role in planning the city. Cities must market themselves in order to attract investments, tourism and not least, the creative class. Public spaces in the city centres are increasingly seen as integral parts of regeneration strategies focused on developing positive images. One of the most obvious changes is the turn towards so-called cultural strategies that range from the promotion of cultural gentrification to the implementation of various “quality-of-life projects.” All of these strategies attach great importance to design and visual symbols. For former industrial cities bigger events such as for example sports championships play an important role in the transformation to post-industrial cities. This article discusses how public space of the city centre of Göteborg was used during the European Athletic Championship 2006 to market Göteborg as a city. The article ends up with a discussion of the meaning of public space in the age of entrepreneurialism.
