- Under de senaste decennierna har Sverige genomgått stora demografiska och politiska förändringar. Tillsammans har dessa inneburit att Sverige idag samtidigt är ett av Europas mest sekulariserade och mest mångreligiösa länder. Den snabba demografiska förändring Sverige har genomgått har ställt många inför nya, stora och i vissa fall skyndsamma kunskapsbehov samtidigt är forskningen om situationen delvis eftersatt. I denna rapport identifieras hur den nya situationen relaterar till det lagstadgade uppdrag som svenskt polisväsende, vård, skola och offentlig förvaltning har. Den forskning som gjorts inom dessa områden sammanfattas och de viktigaste forskningsbehoven identifieras.

Living Shi'ism : Instances of Ritualisation among Islamist Men in Contemporary Iran

- Iranian Shi‘ism is, among other things, known for its rituals of sorrow. In the contemporary Iranian context, active participation in these rituals has become a sign of support for the Islamist regime. The aim of this study is to discuss the ritual activities in the lives of a group of supporters of the regime. It seeks to explore the purposes and meanings of intense ritual commitment among Islamist individuals on a grass-roots level. Based on interviews with five individuals and fieldwork in their mosque community in Esfahān during the years 1999–2003, the study characterises different levels of meaning in their ritual activity. To begin with, there is a canonical level of meaning, a framework of Islamic theology and law in which religiously prescribed conduct has its given place and purpose. In the community of my informants, this canonical meaning is conveyed at public gatherings that are lead by religious authorities. The paramount concept discussed at these meetings is virtue, taqvā. At lectures, Koran classes and prayer meetings ritual activity is related to ambition to uphold moral purity in a world of temptations. To a certain extent the values, ideas and modes of conduct that are promoted by the authorities become the thoughts and behaviour of the individual informants. This hap-pens through a social authorisation process. Although the informants are much aware of canonical meanings they also construe ritual activities in their own personal ways. They find meanings which, although they do not necessarily contradict the canonical ones, are related to the informants’ own life situations. Hence, there is also a self-referential level of meaning in the ritual activity. This level differs between the various individuals and may change from one time to another.Finally, there is an embodied meaning in ritual activity which is difficult to verbalise. Ritual is not only performed ideas, but also bodily experience in its own right. The strongly emotional rituals to which my informants are committed are clear examples of this as they are experienced in and expressed through the body. The meaning of ritual, then, is created through a conglomeration of the culturally conveyed canonical interpreta-tions of life and of the informants’ own embodied experiences.

Localising Salafism : Religious Change among Oromo Muslims in Bale, Ethiopia

- The political transition in 1991 and the new regime’s policy towards the ethnic and religious diversity in Ethiopia have contributed to increased activities from various Islamic reform movements. Among these, we find the Salafi movement which expanded rapidly throughout the 1990s, particularly in the Oromo-speaking south-eastern parts of the country such as Hararge, Arsi and Bale. This dissertation, based on findings from an extensive fieldwork, sheds light on the emergence and expansion of Salafism in Bale. Following the Salafi movement’s development from the 1960s to 2006, it first deals with its early arrival at the end of the Imperial period (late 1960s). Secondly, the study focuses on Salafism during the Marxist period (1974-1991) before discussing the rapid expansion of the movement in the 1990s. The movement’s dynamics and the controversies emerging as a result of the reforms are discussed, particularly with reference to different understandings of sources for religious knowledge and the role of Islamic literacy. The study demonstrates how the religious reforms were connected to wider political, socio-economic and cultural changes, in the sense that improved means of communication paved the way for increased travelling and flows of new ideas into Bale. The study underscores the significance of agents in the process of change, and focuses on the roles of local reformers and Islamic scholars returning from studies in Saudi Arabia in the late 1960s. It also sees the reciprocal process between agents and audience and between stimulus and response as crucial in the process of religious change. This is connected to the issue of localisation and the ways new ideas are coloured by the particularities of the context in which they are introduced. Although Salafism has the character of a trans-national movement, the ways it was remoulded in Bale demonstrates its diversity and points to the importance of locality in construing Salafism.

Living Simultaneity : On religion among semi-secular Swedes

- This thesis aims at contributing to a critical discussion on the supposedly far-reaching secularity of Sweden on the one hand, and on the incongruence and inconsistency of lived religion on the other. At the center are people referred to as semi-secular Swedes – a group that is often neglected in the study of religion. These people do not go to church or get involved in any other alternative organized spiritual activities, neither are they actively opposed to religion or entirely indifferent to it. Most of them describe the ways they are – or are not – religious as in line with the majority patterns in Swedish society.The study is qualitative in method and the material has been gathered through interviews and a questionnaire. It offers a close reading of 28 semi-secular Swedes’ ways of talking about and relating to religion, particularly in reference to their everyday lives and their own experiences, and it analyzes the material with a focus on incongruences.By exploring how the term religion is employed vernacularly by the respondents, the study pinpoints one particular feature in the material, namely simultaneity. The concept of simultaneity is descriptive and puts emphasis on a ‘both and’ approach in (1) the way the respondents ascribe meaning to the term religion, (2) how they talk about themselves in relation to different religious designations, and (3) how they interpret experiences that they single out as ‘out-of-the-ordinary’. These simultaneities are explained and theorized through analyses focusing on intersubjective and discursive processes.In relation to theorizing on religion and religious people this study offers empirical material that nuance a dichotomous understanding of ‘the religious’ and ‘the secular’. In relation to methodology it is argued that the salience of simultaneity in the material shows that when patterns of religiosity among semi-secular Swedes are studied there is a need to be attentive to expressions of complexity, contradiction and incongruity.

- Björn Skogar (f. 1942) är idéhistoriker, religionsdidaktiker och luthersk teolog. I avhandlingen Viva vox och den akademiska religionen behandlade han det tidiga 1900-talets svenska teologihistoria. Detta arbete har sedan följts upp av fortsatt forskning om teologin och det teologiska språkets möjlighet att tolka livet. Skogar har sedan 1976 varit verksam som lärarutbildare. Han har haft en avgörande roll för utformandet av en religionsvetenskaplig utbildning med didaktisk inriktning samt för skapandet av ett religionsdidaktiskt forskningsnätverk i Sverige. Den genomgående teoretiska grundansatsen i Björns gärning har i första hand varit den filosofiska hermeneutiken. Denna bok är en hyllning till Björn som vän, kollega och samtalspartner. Bidragen är skrivna av tjugosju personer som under olika perioder och i olika sammanhang haft privilegiet att få vara Björns kollegor.

Bokens bidrag rör sig över stora avstånd både i tid och rum, mellan olika ämnen och områden – men har det gemensamt att de behandlar framträdande kvinnor i olika religiösa sammanhang. Tanken bakom ämnesvalet är förstås att kvinnligt religiöst ledarskap är en röd tråd i Gunilla Gunners eget akademiska författarskap. Som framgår av flera av bokens bidrag har hon själv också spelat en framträdande roll både som ledargestalt och som inspirationskälla för vänner och kollegor i alla de olika sammanhang där hon rört sig.Gunilla Gunner är docent i religionsvetenskap och har sedan 2005 varit verksam i en rad olika roller på Södertörns högskola.

- Through field research in Sweden and Finland between 2017 and 2022, the thesis follows a burgeoning social movement in which connection with nature is seen as a means of both personal wellbeing and ecological sustainability at the societal level. The thesis describes and analyses ideas, practices, organisations, and literature in a contemporary cultural context in the borderland between health practice, environmental activism, and spirituality. It also examines participants' personal experiences and understands both the practice and its social milieu as a cultivation of experience, whereby experiences of nature as alive and communicative are maintained and enhanced. This leads into a discussion of animism in a contemporary Western context, where the thesis aims to develop a multidimensional understanding which takes into account not only ontology and cognitive-perceptual patterns, but also lays emphasis on emotional and ethical dimensions.The thesis employs the concept face, which, in the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, signifies the encounter with subjectivity outside of oneself. In contrast to objects, which can be grasped intellectually and thus controlled and incorporated, the face reveals a reality beyond conceptualisation to which one must relate ethically. The thesis arrives at an understanding of both health and spirituality as states of (relative) openness toward the world and its human and non-human inhabitants.

Searching for Authentic Living Through Native Faith : The Maausk Movement in Estonia

- The broad aim of this thesis is twofold: firstly, I contextualise the Maausk movement and its practitioners’ understandings in relation to history and the surrounding society; secondly, I analyse the affective and embodied experiences of being a Maausk practitioner from a phenomenological perspective.The thesis focuses on the formation and practice of Maausk, which is perceived to be deeply tied to the society and history where it exists. Relatedly, this study examines how Maausk identity formation and practices have been influenced by the Soviet legacy, romantic nationalism and Estonia’s current economic and political situation.In order to analyse the Maausk experiences and narratives, this study draws from various phenomenologically oriented theories of affect, embodiment and emotion, as well as cultural theories of place, identity, tradition and authenticity. I have used economic anthropology and globalisation theories as well as historical studies of Estonia’s Soviet past to contextualise the Maausk movement. Further, to place Maausk in the European religious landscape, this study refers to native faith and Neo-pagan studies.Through sensory ethnography, this study draws on the affective and emotional aspects of the research material to analyse how the complexity of emotional experiences of being a Maausk practitioner produces Maausk meanings and values. The study also examines the role and function of the body and emotions during the process of embodying the Maausk practices, both techniques and meanings of the practices.

- Bakgrund: Enligt WHO kännetecknas palliativ vård av helhetssyn med mål att möta fysiska, psykiska, sociala liksom religiösa, andliga och existentiella behov. Att möta existentiella behov förbättrar livskvaliteten men forskningen visar att många patienter i palliativ vård har otillräckligt mötta existentiella behov. Det saknas frågeformulär på svenska för att identifiera och möta existentiella behov i palliativ vård.Syfte: Att utvärdera patienters och personals erfarenheter av att använda en svensk översättning avfrågeformuläret H.O.P.E (Hope, Organized Religion, Personal practices, Effects on medical care) vid en palliativ slutenvårdsenhet.Metod: H.O.P.E översattes från engelska till svenska genom ”double back translation”. Sex patienter, en sjuksköterska, en läkare och en kurator deltog i djupintervjuer om erfarenheter av att använda H.O.P.E i samtal med patienter. Intervjuerna spelades in digitalt, transkriberades och analyserades med hermeneutisk ansats.Resultat: Patienter och personal upplevde att H.O.P.E var applicerbart, uppskattat och relevant att använda vidsamtal om religiösa, andliga och existentiella behov. H.O.P.E associerades med känslor av att ”känna sig sedd” och bidrog till att identifiera coping strategier hos patienterna. I samtalen identifierades och adresserades existentiella frågor som mening, hopp, skuld och ånger som följdes upp vid behov. Modifieringar föreslogs av språk som ibland kändes akademiska. Separering föreslogs av vissa frågor. Aspekter av existentiella behov som hopp/hopplöshet, mening/meningslöshet, skuld och ansvar skulle kunna adresseras ytterligare för att bättre möta en sekulär kontext.Betydelse: Studiens resultat visade att den svenska versionen av H.O.P.E är användbart, uppskattat och relevant vid samtal med patienter i palliativ vård om religiösa, andliga och existentiella behov. Modifiering avspråk, uppdelning i flera frågor och tillägg av fler frågor utifrån en sekulär kontext skulle ytterligare förbättra formuläret. Framtida studier behövs för utveckling och validering av formuläret.

- ObjectiveTo evaluate the Swedish version of the Eating Disorder Inventory for Children (EDI-C) from a gender and developmental perspective and to provide normative data.MethodsData were collected within seven cross-sectional projects. Completed questionnaires, from 2070 boys and 2655 girls in grades 4–12, were included.ResultsThe psychometric properties of EDI-C in non-clinical groups of girls and adolescent boys resemble those found for adolescent girls with an eating disorder. Significant differences were found between genders, grades and pre-adolescent and adolescent groups. An increase in drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction and problems with interoceptive awareness and impulse regulation characterized the adolescent girls. Maturity fears, interpersonal distrust and social insecurity decreased during adolescence for both genders.ConclusionsThe results indicate that the EDI-C could well be used for both boys and girls, although separate norms are recommended for pre-adolescents and adolescents as well as for boys and girls.

- I den här studien har forskare vid Södertörns högskola och Uppsala universitet undersökt religion och sekularisering hos svenskar med muslimsk respektive kristen familjebakgrund, med särskilt fokus på vilket sätt svenskar med muslimsk familjebakgrund ser på religion.Under 2018 bjöds 2800 deltagare i Medborgarpanelen in till en enkätdatainsamling för att studera detta. Deltagarna hade i en tidigare undersökning i Medborgarpanelen angett att de har muslimsk, kristen eller sekulär familjebakgrund.Ett tema som undersöktes var vad deltagarna associerade till begreppen ”kristen”, ”sekulär” och ”muslim”. Resultaten visade att identiteterna sekulär och kristen i hög utsträckning ses som ett individuellt ställningstagande medan identiteten muslim i högre utsträckning förstås som en grupptillhörighet. Därutöver fann forskarna att deltagarna med en kristen familjebakgrund har en starkare koppling till sitt religiösa arv än de med muslimsk familjebakgrund.Resultaten visade att islam är en religion som många tar avstånd från, även hos personer som själva har denna religion i sin egen familjebakgrund. Sekulariseringsgraden, i motsats till förväntningarna, visade sig alltså vara högre bland de med muslimsk familjebakgrund än bland de med kristen.

- Är svenskarna världens mest sekulariserade folk? Hur kommer det sig att många känner sig obekväma med att kalla sig kristna trots att de firar jul och är medlemmar i en kyrka? Varför finns det till och med något lite genant över innerlig kristen tro? Och varför upplever många att buddhismen känns sympatisk medan islam – trots att man vet att det är viktigt att inte generalisera – känns hotfull och främmande?Det gudlösa folket söker svaret på dessa frågor i den svenska religionshistorien. Boken handlar om den sekulära svenska majoritetskulturen och om den historia som ligger bakom de hållningar, tankar och föreställningar om religion som finns inom denna grupp. Från reformationen på 1500-talet – via pietismen, upplysningen, teosofin och kolonialismen – till 2000-talets religionsdebatter, följs uppkomsten och utvecklingen av de idéer om religion som vanliga svenskar idag tar för givna. De historiska exposéerna förankras i vanliga svenskars berättelser insamlade genom ett hundratal intervjuer med stockholmare utförda 2009-2012. Resultatet är en berättelse om vilka vi – de sekulära svenskarna – är, varför vi tänker som vi gör och om hur vår internationellt sett unika religionssituation har uppkommit.Boken vänder sig till en intresserad allmänhet men kommer också kunna användas som kurslitteratur för högskolor och universitet, företrädelsevis inom ämnet religionsvetenskap.

- Vad är detta märkliga som jag känner igen som religion? Varför tycks det spela en så stor roll i mänsklig kultur? Och varför skrämmer och lockar det mig på samma gång?Genom historien har religion format världsbilder, livshållningar och samhällen, gjort tillvaron svårtolkad, mångbottnad och motsägelsefull för människor, men också levande och meningsfull. - A Pentecostal revival is sweeping the Romani communities of Europe. The dominant religious orientation of European Roma, Pentecostalism has become one of the major factors behind Romani social development in the wake of the discrimination, marginalization, and growing anti-ziganist sentiments of the latest decades. Through this form of charismatic Protestant Christianity, Roma have overcome social problems and internal conflicts as well as battle against the hostility and exclusion of the 'macro gajo' (non-Roma) society.Based on interviews and field work, this original ethnographic study offers a unique presentation and analysis of the Pentecostal revival in one of Europe's many Romani communities - the Kaale Roma of Finland and Sweden.
