  • Loess and geotourism potential of the Braničevo District (NE Serbia) : From overexploitation to paleoclimate interpretation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Open Geosciences. - 2391-5447. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of loess as a resource for paleoclimatic research is quite well established. In Serbia, a significant number of loess sequences have been preserved in old brickyards. The results of the previously conducted research indicate extremely valuable data that enable a better understanding of the mid- to late Pleistocene climatic evolution in this part of Europe, as well as human dispersal from Africa to Europe via the so-called Danubian migration corridor. The aim of this study is to evaluate the geotourism potentials of the loess profiles in Pożarevac (northeastern Serbia). The goal is to determine their geotourism potential for paleoclimate interpretation. The Modified Geoheritage Assessment Model method has identified exceptional geotourism potentials that can be implemented in the tourism market. Paleoclimatic data can serve as indicators for the development of scientific visitor centers for the promotion and popularization of paleoclimate science and museums, which will affirm sustainable socio-economic development through multidisciplinary interpretation. By combining geological, paleoclimatic, archaeological, biological, and other values that reveal natural and anthropogenic events from the distant past, it is possible to create a very competitive geotourism destination, whose sustainability can be passed on to future generations.

  • Multiscale in modelling and validation for solar photovoltaics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EPJ Photovoltaics. - : EDP Sciences. - 2105-0716. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photovoltaics is amongst the most important technologies for renewable energy sources, and plays a key role in the development of a society with a smaller environmental footprint. Key parameters for solar cells are their energy conversion efficiency, their operating lifetime, and the cost of the energy obtained from a photovoltaic system compared to other sources. The optimization of these aspects involves the exploitation of new materials and development of novel solar cell concepts and designs. Both theoretical modeling and characterization of such devices require a comprehensive view including all scales from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Therefore, multiscale modeling has found particular interest in the photovoltaics community, as a tool to advance the field beyond its current limits. In this article, we review the field of multiscale techniques applied to photovoltaics, and we discuss opportunities and remaining challenges.

  • Local Differentiation in the Loess Deposition as a Function of Dust Source : Key Study Novo Orahovo Loess Paleosol Sequence (Vojvodina, Serbia)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Quaternary. - : MDPI AG. - 2571-550X. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Typical patterns of the Late Pleistocene loess–paleosol units are preserved in the Novo Orahovo brickyard, Northern Serbia. Presented preliminary luminescence chronology supports the chronostratigraphic interpretations of global isotopic marine climate reconstructions. Magnetic susceptibility and sedimentological evidence exhibit general similarities with the marine oxygen-isotope stratigraphy. These records provide new insights into the dust accumulation regimes over the eastern side of the Bačka loess plateau and offer new paleoenvironmental information for the region. They represent an important step forward towards the establishment of a catena from the thin loess-like sediments of the Banat foothills in the east towards the thicker and seemingly more complete loess sections of the southeastern and central Carpathian Basin. Grain-size data from the loess record of Nova Orahovo explain the regional differentiation in dust deposition.

  • Time to consider a new treatment protocol for aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Acta Ophthalmologica. - : Wiley. - 1755-375X .- 1755-3768. ; 91:2, s. 170-175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To discuss treatment modalities for aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (AP-ROP).Methods: The medical charts of all infants with AP-ROP at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden, during a 2-year period (2009 and 2010) were reviewed. Eight infants (16 eyes) with a mean gestational age of 23.8 weeks and a mean birth weight of 592 g were treated with laser and/or intravitreal injections of bevacizumab (0.4 and 0.625 mg). RetCam photography was used to document the retinal appearance before and after treatment. Results: All infants (16 eyes) had AP-ROP in zone I. Mean time at initial treatment was 34 weeks postmenstrual age. Two eyes (one infant) were only treated with laser, and six eyes (three infants) were treated with laser therapy or cryopexy and, because of lack of regression, with bevacizumab as salvage therapy. Eight eyes (four infants) were treated with a first-line bevacizumab injection and four of these eyes (two infants) with additional laser ablation for continued disease progression in zone II. Macular dragging occurred in one eye of one infant primarily treated with laser. Conclusions: Given the high complication rate of the extensive laser treatment for zone I ROP, it is worth considering anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment as an alternative therapy. Further knowledge concerning side effects and long-term ocular and systemic outcome is warranted before this drug becomes general clinical practice.

  • A two-year prospective study comparing lidocaine 2% jelly versus peribulbar anaesthesia for 25G and 23G sutureless vitrectomy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Graefe's Archives for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0721-832X .- 1435-702X. ; 245:9, s. 1253-1258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To evaluate the efficacy of topical lidocaine 2% gel with or without peroral preoperative sedation as an alternative anaesthetic method in sutureless vitreoretinal surgery.A prospective study was designed to assess the intraoperative and postoperative pain, using a visual analogue scale (VAS) in three groups of patients, comprised of 23 patients each. The first group included cases that were operated with 25-gauge (25G) instruments under topical anaesthesia with lidocaine jelly, the second group with 23-gauge (23G) under the same topical anaesthesia and finally the third group (control group) with sutureless (23- or 25-gauge) vitrectomy under peribulbar anaesthesia. Mann Whitney U test was used to compare the results. The subjective surgeon's opinion about the difficulty of each procedure was recorded on a 1-5 scale and the results were evaluated with a chi-square test.No statistically significant difference in the level of pain was detected between the three groups. Topical anaesthesia vitrectomy procedures were performed more easily (p = 0.0002) with 23-gauge than with 25-gauge instruments. The painful steps of the surgery that were capable of causing moderate to severe pain were endolaser, scleral indentation and peribulbar injection. The goal of the operations was accomplished in all cases.Lidocaine 2% jelly with or without peroral preoperative morphine and dixyrazine offers adequate analgesia to perform sutureless vitrectomy. Lack of akinesia does not prevent a successful surgical result.

  • Combined phacoemulsification and pars plana vitrectomy for macular hole treatment.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1395-3907 .- 1600-0420. ; 83:2, s. 172-175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE To assess the outcome of simultaneous phacoemulsification, pars plana vitrectomy and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in eyes with macular hole. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted in 38 eyes (36 patients) after combined phacoemulsification, insertion of a posterior capsule IOL and pars plana vitrectomy. RESULTS The macular hole was successfully closed in 32 of the 38 eyes (84%). In six eyes (16%) the hole failed to close and one eye underwent a second operation. Vision improved by two or more Snellen lines in 29 eyes (73%), there was no change in seven eyes (18%), and visual acuity decreased in two eyes (5%). Intraoperative and postoperative complications included retinal tears in nine eyes (24%), posterior capsule rupture in two eyes (5%), transient postoperative increase of intraocular pressure in eight eyes (21%), and posterior capsule opacification in five eyes (13%). CONCLUSION Combining phacoemulsification, IOL insertion and pars plana vitrectomy for macular hole repair can reduce the need for cataract surgery in the future, decrease costs, shorten postoperative recovery time and allow for clearer intraoperative visualization, making the procedure safer and more effective.
