  • Molecular Engineering of Perylene Diimide Polymers with a Robust Built-in Electric Field for Enhanced Solar-Driven Water Splitting
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The built-in electric field of the polymer semiconductors could be regulated by the dipole moment of its building blocks, thereby promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and achieving efficient solar-driven water splitting. Herein, three perylene diimide (PDI) polymers, namely oPDI, mPDI and pPDI, are synthesized with different phenylenediamine linkers. Notably, the energy level structure, light-harvesting efficiency, and photogenerated carrier separation and migration of polymers are regulated by the orientation of PDI unit. Among them, oPDI enables a large dipole moment and robust built-in electric field, resulting in enhanced solar-driven water splitting performance. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, oPDI exhibits the highest photocurrent of 115.1 mu A cm-2 for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution, which is 11.5 times that of mPDI, 26.8 times that of pPDI and 104.6 times that of its counterparts PDI monomer at the same conditions. This work provides a strategy for designing polymers by regulating the orientation of structural units to construct efficient solar energy conversion systems. Three perylene diimide (PDI) polymers were designed and synthesized such that the molecular orientation of the PDI units was regulated to create and modulate their built-in electric fields. Due to the large dipole moment and interfacial electric field, oPDI enables an extraordinary photocurrent density of 115.1 mu A & sdot; cm-2, which is 11.5 and 26.8 times that of mPDI and pPDI, respectively.image

  • Cartography of opportunistic pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes in a tertiary hospital environment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1078-8956 .- 1546-170X. ; 26, s. 941-951
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although disinfection is key to infection control, the colonization patterns and resistomes of hospital-environment microbes remain underexplored. We report the first extensive genomic characterization of microbiomes, pathogens and antibiotic resistance cassettes in a tertiary-care hospital, from repeated sampling (up to 1.5 years apart) of 179 sites associated with 45 beds. Deep shotgun metagenomics unveiled distinct ecological niches of microbes and antibiotic resistance genes characterized by biofilm-forming and human-microbiome-influenced environments with corresponding patterns of spatiotemporal divergence. Quasi-metagenomics with nanopore sequencing provided thousands of high-contiguity genomes, phage and plasmid sequences (>60% novel), enabling characterization of resistome and mobilome diversity and dynamic architectures in hospital environments. Phylogenetics identified multidrug-resistant strains as being widely distributed and stably colonizing across sites. Comparisons with clinical isolates indicated that such microbes can persist in hospitals for extended periods (>8 years), to opportunistically infect patients. These findings highlight the importance of characterizing antibiotic resistance reservoirs in hospitals and establish the feasibility of systematic surveys to target resources for preventing infections. Spatiotemporal characterization of microbial diversity and antibiotic resistance in a tertiary-care hospital reveals broad distribution and persistence of antibiotic-resistant organisms that could cause opportunistic infections in a healthcare setting.

  • Long-term androgen excess induces insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in PCOS-like rats.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of steroid biochemistry and molecular biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1220 .- 0960-0760. ; 208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are at higher risk for metabolic disorders compared to healthy women, and about 51 % of women with PCOS suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Investigation into the pathological mechanism behind this association will provide insights for the prevention and treatment of this complication.Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a nonaromatic androgen, was used to mimic the pathological conditions of hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, Oil Red O staining, immunofluorescent staining, Western blots, and qRT-PCR were used to verify the hepatic steatosis and inflammation, and the latter two methods were also used for energy and mitochondrion-related assays. ELISA was used to measure the level of reactive oxygen species.Twelve weeks of DHT exposure led to obesity and insulin resistance as well as hepatic steatosis, lipid deposition, and different degrees of inflammation. The expression of molecules involved in respiratory chain and aerobic respiration processes, such as electron transfer complex II, pyruvate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit A, was inhibited. In addition, molecules associated with apoptosis and autophagy were also abnormally expressed, such as increased Bak mRNA, an increased activated caspase-3 to caspase-3 ratio, and increased Atg12 protein expression. All of these changes are associated with the mitochondria and lead to lipid deposition and inflammation in the liver.Long-term androgen excess contributes to insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis by affecting mitochondrial function and causing an imbalance in apoptosis and autophagy, thus suggesting the pathogenesis of NAFLD in women with PCOS.

  • Tuning the composition of heavy metal-free quaternary quantum dots for improved photoelectrochemical performance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 9:9, s. 5825-5832
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks towards the development of cost-effective and high-efficiency photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Unfortunately, the frequent use of QDs possessing heavy metals (e.g. Cd and Pb) in state-of-the-art QD-based PEC technologies is a major obstacle regarding their future commercial perspective. In this work, we synthesized heavy metal-free quaternary CuZnInS3 (CZIS) with variable Cu : Zn ratios and fabricated corresponding QDs-PEC devices via a facile chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique. It is revealed that the tuned CZIS (1Zn) QDs (i.e. Cu : Zn ratio of 1 : 1) can result in optimized optical properties including enhanced quantum yield, suppressed nonradiative recombination and extended excitonic lifetime. Accordingly, as-fabricated CZIS (1Zn) QD-based photoanodes demonstrated increased charge transfer rate and decreased electron transport resistance for improved PEC performance. The results indicate that tuning the composition of heavy metal-free multinary QDs is one of the promising pathways to achieve eco-friendly and high-performance PEC systems for solar hydrogen production.

  • Near-infrared, eco-friendly ZnAgInSe quantum dots-sensitized graphene oxide-TiO2 hybrid photoanode for high performance photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising building-blocks for the manufacture of cost-effective photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells towards efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Nevertheless, the state-of-the-art QDs-based PEC systems still suffer from the frequent utilization of highly toxic elements in QDs (Cd and Pb), hindering their future practical applications and potential commercialization. Here, we report a PEC device fabricated using eco-friendly, near-infrared (NIR) ZnAgInSe (ZAISe) QDs and hybrid TiO2/graphene oxide (GO) film. Based on the synergistic effect of QD’s broad light absorption and excellent charge extraction/transport properties of TiO2/GO film, as-assembled QDs-photoanode exhibits an outstanding saturated photocurrent density of ∼6.7 mA/cm2 with good stability under standard 1 sun illumination. The introduction of functional GO can lead to the reduced charge transfer resistance, suppressed charge recombination, and enhanced electron transport within the QDs-TiO2 photoanodes. The results offer a facile and effective method to enhance the performance of environmentally friendly QDs-based PEC devices and shed light on the development of low-cost, “green” and high-efficiency solar-to-hydrogen conversion system.

  • Endogenous Ovarian Angiogenesis in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome-Like Rats Induced by Low-Frequency Electro-Acupuncture: The CLARITY Three-Dimensional Approach. : Ovarian angiogenesis in PCOS-like rats
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International journal of molecular sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 1422-0067. ; 19:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We sought to determine the role of ovarian vascularity and neo-angiogenesis in the development of mature follicles in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to identify any changes induced by low-frequency electro-acupuncture (EA). Twenty-eight 21-day-old female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups-Control, Obesity, PCOS-like, and PCOS-like-EA (n = 7/group). Rats in the Obesity group were fed a high-fat diet throughout the experiment. Rats in the PCOS-like and PCOS-like-EA groups were implanted with a sustained-release tube containing 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) beneath the skin of the neck. Rats in the PCOS-like-EA group received low-frequency EA treatment starting at 70 days for 30 min five times a week for four weeks. At the end of the experiment, all rats were euthanized and perfused with hydrogel. The ovaries were collected for clarification and imaging, and ovarian vascularity and neo-angiogenesis were analyzed. Compared with Control and Obesity rats, the ovaries in DHT-induced PCOS-like rats were smaller in size and had fewer mature follicles and corpora lutea. EA increased angiogenesis in the antral follicles of PCOS-like rats, which in turn promoted follicle maturation, ovulation, and CL formation. Therefore, endogenous ovarian angiogenesis plays a very important role in follicular maturation and might be one of the peripheral and direct mechanisms of EA on PCOS.

  • Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural dines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale.

  • How to choose the suitable animal model of polycystic ovary syndrome?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Traditional Medicine and Modern Medicine. - 2575-9000 .- 2575-9019. ; 1:2, s. 95-113
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a gynecological metabolic and endocrine disorder with uncertain etiology. To understand the etiology of PCOS or the evaluation of various therapeutic agents, different animal models have been introduced. Considering this fact that is difficult to develop an animal model that mimics all aspects of this syndrome, but, similarity of biological, anatomical, and/or biochemical features of animal model to the human PCOS phenotypes can increase its application. This review paper evaluates the recently researched animal models and introduced the best models for different research purposes in PCOS studies. During January 2013 to January 2017, 162 studies were identified which applied various kinds of animal models of PCOS including rodent, primate, ruminant and fish. Between these models, prenatal and pre-pubertal androgen rat models and then prenatal androgen mouse model have been studied in detail than others. The comparison of main features of these models with women PCOS demonstrates higher similarity of these three models to human conditions. Thereafter, letrozole models can be recommended for the investigation of various aspects of PCOS. Interestingly, similarity of PCOS features of post-pubertal insulin and human chorionic gonadotropin rat models with women PCOS were considerable which can make it as a good choice for future investigations.

  • Boosting the performance of eco-friendly quantum dots-based photoelectrochemical cells via effective surface passivation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nano Energy. - : Elsevier. - 2211-2855 .- 2211-3282. ; 76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells fabricated using environment-friendly colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising optoelectronic devices for future practical solar-to-hydrogen conversion. However, the majority of current eco-friendly QDs-based PEC cells exhibited low efficiency mainly due to the charge trapping at QDs’ surface states and interfacial recombination processes in devices. Here, eco-friendly AgInS2 (AIS) QDs-based PEC cells passivated with variable ZnS layers were fabricated and the effects of ZnS surface passivation on corresponding device performance were investigated. It is demonstrated that optimizing the thickness of the ZnS passivation layers can largely suppress the charge trapping/recombination and enhance the electron injection efficiency in the PEC devices, leading to a saturated photocurrent density of ∼5.7 mA/cm2 under standard AM 1.5 G solar illumination. Increasing the thickness of ZnS passivation layers can further inhibit the photocorrosion and give rise to higher device stability. These results indicate that ZnS surface passivation is a facile and efficient technique to boost the performance of eco-friendly QDs-based PEC cells.

  • Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Innovation. - 2666-6758. ; 5
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

  • Environmentally friendly Mn-alloyed core/shell quantum dots for high-efficiency photoelectrochemical cells
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 8:21, s. 10736-10741
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal quantum dot (QD)-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells are cost-effective devices showing remarkable solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency. However, the extensive use of highly toxic elements (e.g. Pb and Cd) in QDs' synthesis and device fabrication is still a major challenge towards their practical development. Herein, we fabricate a solar-driven PEC cell based on environmentally friendly Mn-alloyed CuInS2 (MnCIS)/ZnS core/shell QDs, showing more favorable band alignment, efficient charge transfer, reduced charge recombination and lower charge transfer resistance with respect to the control device fabricated using unalloyed CuInS2 (CIS)/ZnS core/shell QDs. An unprecedented photocurrent density of ∼5.7 mA cm−2 with excellent stability was obtained for the as-fabricated MnCIS/ZnS core/shell QD-based PEC device when operated under standard one sun irradiation (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2). These results indicate that the transition metal-alloyed environmentally friendly core/shell QDs are promising for next-generation solar technologies.

  • Surface Reconstruction on Uniform Cu Nanodisks Boosted Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Materials Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2639-4979. ; 4, s. 650-656
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Haber-Bosch (HB) process has provided most of commercial ammonia at the expense of high energy consumption and high CO2 emission. Nitrate electroreduction is showing great potential as an alternative route for the green and scale-up synthesis of ammonia at ambient conditions. However, the performance has lagged due to lack of efficient electrocatalysts. In this work, we present the facile synthesis of uniform Cu nanodisks with exposed (111) facets as highly active electrocatalyst for electrochemical ammonia synthesis, delivering a high ammonia yield of 2.16 mg mg-1cat h-1 and a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 81.1% at -0.5 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The remarkable activity is originated from the surface reconstructed triatomic Cu clusters due to the cathodic deoxygenation process. As a result, the reconstructed surface shows enhanced affinity to the adsorption of nitrate ions which undergo successive break of three N-O bonds, followed by subsequent formation of three N-H bonds to finally form NH3. The present study provides the feasible preparation of Cu based advanced catalysts and a unique insight into the mechanism of nitrate electroreduction.

  • Synergistic tailoring of band structure and charge carrier extraction in "€œgreen"€ core/shell quantum dots for highly efficient solar energy conversion
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 442:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environment-friendly colloidal core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with controllable optoelectronic characteristics are promising building blocks for future commercial solar technologies. Herein, we synergistically tailor the electronic band structure and charge carrier extraction of eco-friendly AgInS2 (AIS)/ZnS core/shell QDs via Mn-alloying and Cu-doping in the core and shell, respectively. It is demonstrated that the Mn-alloying in AIS core can broaden the band gap to facilitate delocalization of photogenerated electrons into the shell and further incorporation of Cu in the ZnS shell enables the creation of Cu-related states that capture the photogenerated holes from core, thus leading to charge carrier recombination and accelerated transfer of photogenerated electrons in the core/shell QDs. As-prepared Mn-AIS/ZnS@Cu QDs were assembled as light harvesters in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) device for light-driven hydrogen evolution, delivering a maximum photocurrent density of ∼6.4 mA cm-2 with superior device stability under standard one sun irradiation (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm-2). Our findings highlight that simultaneously engineering the band alignment and charge carrier dynamics of “green” core/shell QDs endow the feasibility to design future high-efficiency and durable solar hydrogen production systems.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2045-7758. ; 14:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new species of Papaveraceae, Corydalis sunhangii, in the section Trachycarpae, is described and illustrated from Nyingchi City, Xizang, China. The new species has some resemblance to Corydalis kingdonis, but differs by radical leaves prominent, usually several, blade tripinnate (vs. insignificant, few, blade bi- to triternate); cauline leaf usually one, much smaller than radical leaves, usually situated in lower half of stem (vs. usually two, larger than radical leaves, concentrated in upper third of stem); racemes densely 13-35-flowered (vs. rather lax, 4-11-flowered); claw of lower petal shallowly saccate (vs. very prominently and deeply saccate); capsule oblong, with raised lines of dense papillae (vs. broadly obovoid, smooth). Phylogenetic analysis, based on 68 protein-coding plastid genes of 49 samples, shows that C. sunhangii is not closely related to any hitherto described species, which is consistent with our morphological analysis.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The drawbacks of amorphous hard carbon are its low conductivity and structural instability, due to its large volume change and the occurrence of side reactions with the electrolyte during cycling. Here, we propose a simple and rapid method to address these disadvantages; we used an emulsion solvent-evaporation method to create hierarchically structured microparticles of hard carbon nanoparticles, derived from soot, and multi-walled-carbon-nanotubes at a very low threshold of 2.8 wt%. These shrub-ball like microparticles have well-defined void spaces between different nanostructures of carbon, leading to an increased surface area, lower charge-resistance and side reactions, and higher electronic conductivity for Na+ insertion and de-insertion. They can be slurry cast to assemble Na+ anodes, exhibiting an initial discharge capacity of 713.3 mA h g(-1) and showing long-term stability with 120.8 mA h g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) after 500 cycles, thus outperforming neat hard carbon nanoparticles by an order of magnitude. Our work shows that hierarchical self-assembly is attractive for increasing the performance of microparticles used for battery production.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-3263 .- 1520-6904. ; 78:11, s. 5328-5338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the purpose of developing readily synthesized CHEF (chelation-enhanced fluorescence) type Zn2+ probes with relatively simple molecular structures and excellent sensing behavior, p-anisoyl chloride was used for the acylation of 5-(pentafluorophenyl)dipyrromethane. Interestingly, the alpha,beta'-diacylated product PS2 with a unique substitution mode was obtained in high yield in addition to the normal a-substituted mono- and diacylated products PSI and PS3. Further oxidation of PS1-PS3 afforded dipyrrins S1-S3. Crystal structure and H-1 NMR measurements of S2 demonstrate the existence of a pure tautomer, which is consistent with DFT calculations. S1-S3 show highly Zn2+ selective "turn-on" fluorescence based on a CHEF mechanism by the formation of 2:1 (probe:metal) Zn2+ complexes. The emission colors can be easily tuned from green to red by changing the dipyrrin substitution modes. Furthermore, these probes demonstrate fast responses and wide applicable pH ranges. Among them, S2 shows the highest Zn2+ sensitivity, with a detection limit of 4.4 x 10(-8) M.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Organic and biomolecular chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-0520 .- 1477-0539. ; 11:16, s. 2685-2692
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most reported Zn2+ probes suffer from the interference of background fluorescence originated from the conjugated structures of commonly utilized fluorophores. In this work, three novel meso-hydroxyl group substituted dipyrromethanes DPMOH1-DPMOH3 were synthesized and found to be colourless and nonfluorescent due to the interruption of the conjugated p system by an sp(3) carbon between the two pyrrolic units. Interestingly, only the addition of Zn2+ to the solutions of DPMOH1-DPMOH3 promoted their oxidation to dipyrrin forms, and bright fluorescence "turn on" was observed due to the formation of corresponding dipyrrin complexes with the dipyrrin : zinc stoichiometry of 2 :1. Zn2+ detection mechanism was investigated by UV-Vis, fluorescence, H-1 NMR and HRMS analyses, which can be ascribed to the CHEF type fluorescence enhancement, resulting from good rigidity of the dipyrrin complexes. Hence, DPMOH1-DPMOH3 can be used as fluorescence turn-on Zn2+ probes with the advantage of no background fluorescence.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: CHI PLAY 2022. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ; , s. 246-252
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has shown that children with autism face severe social collaboration challenges such as having issues with turn-taking, which is essential when developing social skills. However, few digital interventions have provided visual support for the development of turn-taking behaviour. To visually manifest the process of turn-taking, this research transformed a pong game into a two-player tablet game, i.e., StarRescue. In this paper, we introduce StarRescue's game design decisions and preliminary findings gathered from semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents of pre-school children with high-functioning autism. The results demonstrated that StarRescue has the potential to help children with autism improve their social behaviors. Furthermore, this research shed light on future tablet game design to enhance turn-based collaboration for children with autism.

  • Engineering Interfacial Structure in “Giant” PbS/CdS Quantum Dots for Photoelectrochemical Solar Energy Conversion
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nano Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-2855. ; 30, s. 531-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interfacial structure in “giant” PbS/CdS quantum dots (QDs) was engineered by modulating the Cd:S molar ratio during in situ growth. The control of the gradient interfacial layer could facilitate hole transfer, regulate the transition from double- to single-color emission, as a consequence. These QDs are optically active close-to-the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region and are candidates as absorber materials in solar energy conversion. Photoinduced charge transfer from “giant” QDs to electron scavenger can still take place despite the ultra-thick (~5 nm) shell. The hybrid architecture based on a TiO2 mesoporous framework sensitized by the “giant” QDs with alloyed interface can produce a saturated photocurrent density as high as ~5.3 mA/cm2 in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell under 1 Sun illumination, which is around 2 times higher than that of bare PbS and core/thin-shell PbS/CdS QDs sensitizer. The as-prepared PEC device presented very good stability thanks to the “giant” core/shell QDs architecture with tailored interfacial layer and a further coating of the ZnS shell. 78% of the initial current density is kept after 2-hour irradiation at 1 Sun. Engineering of electronic band structure plays a key role in boosting the functional properties of these composite systems, which hold great potential for H2 production in PEC devices.

    • This paper reports the demonstration of high-speed PAM-4 transmission using a 1.5-μm single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser (SM-VCSEL) over multicore fiber with 7 cores over different distances. We have successfully generated up to 70 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signals with a VCSEL in optical back-to-back, and transmitted 50 Gbaud PAM-4 signals over both 1-km dispersion-uncompensated and 10-km dispersion-compensated in each core, enabling a total data throughput of 700 Gbps over the 7-core fiber. Moreover, 56 Gbaud PAM-4 over 1-km has also been shown, whereby unfortunately not all cores provide the required 3.8 × 10$^-3$bit error rate (BER) for the 7% overhead-hard decision forward error correction (7% OH HDFEC). The limited bandwidth of the VCSEL and the adverse chromatic dispersion of the fiber are suppressed with pre-equalization based on accurate end-to-end channel characterizations. With a digital post-equalization, BER performance below the 7% OH-HDFEC limit is achieved over all cores. The demonstrated results show a great potential to realize high-capacity and compact short-reach optical interconnects for data centers.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A highly efficient photocoupling agent, based on perfluorophenylazide (PFPA)-conjugated polyallylamine (PAAm), was developed for the efficient immobilization of polymers, nanoparticles, graphene, and small molecules. The conjugate, PAAm–PFPA, was synthesized, and the percentage of the photoactive moiety, PFPA, can be controlled by the ratio of the two components in the synthesis. By treating epoxy-functionalized wafers with PAAm–PFPA, photoactive surfaces were generated. Compared with the PFPA surface, these polymer-based photocoupling matrix resulted in significantly enhanced immobilization efficiencies, especially for nanomaterials and small molecules. Thus, polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) and alkyl-functionalized silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were successfully immobilized on the PAAm–PFPA surface, resulting in a high material density. Graphene flakes patterned on the PAAm–PFPA surface showed improved feature resolution in addition to a higher material density compared to that of flakes immobilized on the PFPA surface. Furthermore, 2-O-α-d-mannopyranosyl-d-mannopyranose (Man2) immobilized on the PAAm–PFPA surface exhibited significantly enhanced signals when treated with lectin concanavalin A (Con A).

  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 11:1, s. 855-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cognitive decline is one of the complications of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Intermittent fasting (IF) is a promising dietary intervention for alleviating T2D symptoms, but its protective effect on diabetes-driven cognitive dysfunction remains elusive. Here, we find that a 28-day IF regimen for diabetic mice improves behavioral impairment via a microbiota-metabolites-brain axis: IF enhances mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism gene expression in hippocampus, re-structures the gut microbiota, and improves microbial metabolites that are related to cognitive function. Moreover, strong connections are observed between IF affected genes, microbiota and metabolites, as assessed by integrative modelling. Removing gut microbiota with antibiotics partly abolishes the neuroprotective effects of IF. Administration of 3-indolepropionic acid, serotonin, short chain fatty acids or tauroursodeoxycholic acid shows a similar effect to IF in terms of improving cognitive function. Together, our study purports the microbiota-metabolites-brain axis as a mechanism that can enable therapeutic strategies against metabolism-implicated cognitive pathophysiologies.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims: Concerns regarding adverse events associated with the use of acid suppressants have increased. However, the impact of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine‐2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) on the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains unknown. This study aimed to estimate the risk of ASCVD in association with the use of PPIs and H2RAs. Methods: This prospective cohort study included participants without cardiovascular diseases or anti-hypertensive treatment at baseline (2006–2010) in the UK Biobank. The outcomes were ASCVD and each subtype (coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, peripheral artery disease, and ischemic stroke). The association was estimated by Cox proportional-hazards models. Results: Among 316,730 individuals (aged 50–88 years), during a median of 12.5 years of follow-up, we documented 13,503 (4.3%) incident ASCVD. Regular PPIs use was associated with a higher risk of ASCVD (HR: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.09–1.23) and every subtype of ASCVD. Among each type of PPIs, omeprazole (HR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.11–1.28), lansoprazole (HR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.02–1.22), and pantoprazole (HR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.00–1.97) were associated with a higher risk of ASCVD. Stratification analysis showed that PPIs use was associated with a higher risk of ASCVD among individuals without indications of medications for PPIs. In addition, use of H2RAs was not related to the risk of ASCVD (HR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.85–1.11). Conclusions: PPIs were associated with increased risk of ASCVD, particularly amongst participants without indications for medication. Our findings are of important practical significance and suggest that clinicians should be cautious in prophylactic use of PPIs.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are xenobiotics that mimic the interaction of natural hormones and alter synthesis, transport, or metabolic pathways. The prospect of EDCs causing adverse health effects in humans and wildlife has led to the development of scientific and regulatory approaches for evaluating bioactivity. This need is being addressed using high-throughput screening (HTS) in vitro approaches and computational modeling.OBJECTIVES: In support of the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) led two worldwide consortiums to virtually screen chemicals for their potential estrogenic and androgenic activities. Here, we describe the Collaborative Modeling Project for Androgen Receptor Activity (CoMPARA) efforts, which follows the steps of the Collaborative Estrogen Receptor Activity Prediction Project (CERAPP).METHODS: The CoMPARA list of screened chemicals built on CERAPP's list of 32,464 chemicals to include additional chemicals of interest, as well as simulated ToxCast (TM) metabolites, totaling 55,450 chemical structures. Computational toxicology scientists from 25 international groups contributed 91 predictive models for binding, agonist, and antagonist activity predictions. Models were underpinned by a common training set of 1,746 chemicals compiled from a combined data set of 11 ToxCast (TM)/Tox21 HTS in vitro assays.RESULTS: The resulting models were evaluated using curated literature data extracted from different sources. To overcome the limitations of single-model approaches, CoMPARA predictions were combined into consensus models that provided averaged predictive accuracy of approximately 80% for the evaluation set.DISCUSSION: The strengths and limitations of the consensus predictions were discussed with example chemicals; then, the models were implemented into the free and open-source OPERA application to enable screening of new chemicals with a defined applicability domain and accuracy assessment. This implementation was used to screen the entire EPA DSSTox database of similar to 875,000 chemicals, and their predicted AR activities have been made available on the EPA CompTox Chemicals dashboard and National Toxicology Program's Integrated Chemical Environment.

    • BACKGROUND: Genomic DNA reference materials are widely recognized as essential for ensuring data quality in omics research. However, relying solely on reference datasets to evaluate the accuracy of variant calling results is incomplete, as they are limited to benchmark regions. Therefore, it is important to develop DNA reference materials that enable the assessment of variant detection performance across the entire genome.RESULTS: We established a DNA reference material suite from four immortalized cell lines derived from a family of parents and monozygotic twins. Comprehensive reference datasets of 4.2 million small variants and 15,000 structural variants were integrated and certified for evaluating the reliability of germline variant calls inside the benchmark regions. Importantly, the genetic built-in-truth of the Quartet family design enables estimation of the precision of variant calls outside the benchmark regions. Using the Quartet reference materials along with study samples, batch effects are objectively monitored and alleviated by training a machine learning model with the Quartet reference datasets to remove potential artifact calls. Moreover, the matched RNA and protein reference materials and datasets from the Quartet project enables cross-omics validation of variant calls from multiomics data.CONCLUSIONS: The Quartet DNA reference materials and reference datasets provide a unique resource for objectively assessing the quality of germline variant calls throughout the whole-genome regions and improving the reliability of large-scale genomic profiling.

    • Many studies on microtextures have focused on the effect of laser processing parameters on microtextured morphology from the experimental point of view, and not on its influence on the physical field and stress field around the microtextures. This has resulted in the lack of accurate predictions on micropit diameters, thus reducing the processing efficiency. In order to address these problems, the effects of laser processing parameters on the precision machining, physical field, and stress field of micropit textures for a ball-end milling cutter were studied by experiments and simulation. The optimum laser processing parameters include laser power of 70%, scanning speed of 1700 mm/s, and scanning of seven times. Based on the optimized data of a support vector machine, the prediction models of micropit diameters for laser machining were established. The errors of the models are less than 10%, thus verifying their accuracy. This study can serve as a theoretical reference for the efficient processing of titanium alloys.

    • Photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation based on colloidal quantum dots (QDs) is very promising because of its high solar energy to fuel conversion efficiency and low fabrication costs. However, its commercial development is hindered by various challenges, including the widespread use of toxic heavy metal–based QDs as sensitizers. We report an environmentally friendly, high efficiency PEC device in which the photoanode consists of a mesoporous TiO2 film sensitized with heavy metal-free, near-infrared (NIR) colloidal CuInSexS2-x (CISeS) QDs. To reduce surface-related traps, we grew an ultrathin ZnS shell on the CISeS core QDs by cation exchange. The PEC cell based on this core/shell CISeS/ZnS QDs exhibits suppressed charge recombination and a saturated photocurrent density of ~5.3 mA/cm2 under one sun illumination (AM 1.5 G, 100 mW/cm2). In addition, the as-prepared PEC device shows an outstanding stability, exhibiting a drop of only 23% after 9 h illumination. The success in using such core/shell CISeS/ZnS QDs paves the way to realize environment-friendly, high efficiency and cost-effective PEC devices for hydrogen production.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Manufacturing Research. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1750-0591. ; 16:2, s. 122-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cutting speed at the lowest point of a ball-end milling cutter is zero, which results in poor workpiece surface quality and serious cutter wear. To alleviate this problem, a micro-texture can be processed on the rake face of a ball-end milling cutter to provide an anti-friction and anti-wear mechanism. The objective of the work reported here is to reduce cutter wear and optimise workpiece surface quality. By using a mathematical model of row spacing to analyse the differential geometric relationship between cutters and surfaces at their contact point, we have been able to obtain optimal cutter orientation. This was verified by simulating concave surface machining. Experiments were then conducted to verify the approach and the results showed that when the cutter orientation is adjusted to its optimum, the surface quality of the workpiece processed by a micro-textured ball-end milling cutter is at its best. • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 932, s. 167526-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution of single crystals with low La doping, LaxY1-xVO3 (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2), has been studied using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, specific heat, mag-netization, and Raman-scattering techniques. It is found that substituting Y3+ by La3+ increases the de-generacy of the yz/zx orbitals and decreases the Jahn-Teller distortion. These weakens the G-type (antiphase ordering along the c axis) orbital ordering phase. Meanwhile, the substituting decreases the magnetism entropy, indicating the shrinking of the t2g and eg orbital hybridization, eventually destabilizing the C-type (in-phase ordering along the c axis) antiferromagnetic ordering phase. In addition, the mechanism for the shrinking of the diamagnetism with increasing x is analyzed. It may attribute to the competition between the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the single-ion anisotropy.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal core/shell heterostructured quantum dots (QDs) possessing quasi-type II band structure have demonstrated effective surface passivation and prolonged exciton lifetime, leading to enhanced charge separation/transfer efficiencies that are promising for photovoltaic device applications. Herein, we synthesized CuInS2 (CIS)/CdS core/shell heterostructured QDs and manipulated the optoelectronic properties via controlling the CdS shell thickness. The shell-thickness-dependent optical properties indicate the existence of a quasi-type II band structure in such core/shell QDs, which was verified by ultrafast spectroscopy and theoretical simulations. These quasi-type II core/shell QDs having various shell thicknesses are used as light absorbers for the fabrication of solar-driven QDs-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices, exhibiting an optimized photocurrent density of ∼6.0 mA/cm2 and excellent stability under simulated AM 1.5G solar illumination. The results demonstrate that quasi-type II CIS/CdS core/shell heterostructured QDs with tailored optoelectronic properties are promising to realize high-performance QDs-based solar energy conversion devices for the production of solar fuels.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 607, s. 816-825
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introducing polymerizable monomers into a binary hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) template is a straightforward way for retaining the nanostructure but will decrease attractive intra-and inter aggregate interactions. It is therefore crucial to understand the interfacial interactions at nanoscale after introducing the monomers but prior to polymerization. Herein, active species, poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), were introduced into hexagonal LLC of dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide and water to explore the structural variables, dimensional stabil-ity, and dynamic property. At a proper volume ratio of PEGDA/HEMA (1/4), the system presents excellent homogeneity with a higher dimensional stability and lower dynamic property from rheological assess-ments, thereby achieving robust, free-standing, and transparent membranes after photo -polymerization. The unique property of the system also lies in the much lower order-disorder transition temperature (45 degrees C) that facilitates the reorientation of mesochannels. They are in contrast inaccessible for the ternary system only with PEGDA, though the nanostructure for both systems could be retained. An insight into subtle variations in these parameters allows us to prepare a polymerizable template possess-ing higher dimensional stability and suitable flexibility via molecular design, thereby enabling simulta-neous structural alignment and retention for the development of functional nanomaterials. • Organic nanocrystals induced surface passivation towards high-efficiency and stable perovskite solar cells
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nano Energy. - : ELSEVIER. - 2211-2855 .- 2211-3282. ; 89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface passivation has played a critical role for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells by reducing surface defects, promoting charge transport, and preventing the penetration of degrading agents. State-of-the-art passivation approaches mainly rely on the formation of a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite layer or the deposition of an ultrathin layer based on the molecular design. Here, we demonstrated a novel nanocrystal-pinning passivation by dripping 2-bromoethyltrimethylammonium bromide (BETAB) colloidal solution onto perovskite films. Theoretical simulation and kinds of experimental results confirm that BETAB nanocrystals can effectively reduce the defect density of perovskite films. Impressively, the resulting FA1-xMAxPbI3 based planar devices exhibit a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.04% (certified: 22.10%) with a voltage loss of only 390 mV. Besides, the BETAB nanocrystals could simultaneously increase the hydrophobic property of perovskite films and prevent the reaction and formation of 2D perovskites during device operation. Correspondingly, the resulted devices exhibit excellent stability under moisture, heating, and operational tracking conditions.

  • Porous Carbon Membrane-Supported Atomically Dispersed Pyrrole-Type Fe-N-4 as Active Sites for Electrochemical Hydrazine Oxidation Reaction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Small. - : Wiley. - 1613-6810 .- 1613-6829. ; 16:31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rational design of catalytically active sites in porous materials is essential in electrocatalysis. Herein, atomically dispersed Fe-N-x sites supported by hierarchically porous carbon membranes are designed to electrocatalyze the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR), one of the key techniques in electrochemical nitrogen transformation. The high intrinsic catalytic activity of the Fe-N-x single-atom catalyst together with the uniquely mixed micro-/macroporous membrane support positions such an electrode among the best-known heteroatom-based carbon anodes for hydrazine fuel cells. Combined with advanced characterization techniques, electrochemical probe experiments, and density functional theory calculation, the pyrrole-type Fe-N-4 structure is identified as the real catalytic site in HzOR.

  • Co-recovery of physical size and cognitive ability from infancy to adolescence : A twin study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Child Development. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0009-3920 .- 1467-8624. ; 95:4, s. 1367-1383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study tested phenotypic and biometric associations between physical and cognitive catch-up growth in a community sample of twins (n = 1285, 51.8% female, 89.3% White). Height and weight were measured at up to 17 time points between birth and 15 years, and cognitive ability was assessed at up to 16 time points between 3 months and 15 years. Weight and length at birth were positively associated with cognitive abilities in infancy and adolescence (r's =.16–.51). More rapid weight catch-up growth was associated with slower, steadier cognitive catch-up growth. Shared and nonshared environmental factors accounted for positive associations between physical size at birth and cognitive outcomes. Findings highlight the role of prenatal environmental experiences in physical and cognitive co-development.

  • Simultaneous copper incorporation in core/shell-structured eco-friendly quantum dots for high-efficiency photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nano Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2211-2855 .- 2211-3282. ; 122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rational design of elemental incorporation in colloidal eco-friendly core/shell quantum dots (QDs) holds the potential to synergistically tailor their electronic band structure and carrier kinetics for applications in forthcoming “green” and high-efficiency solar energy conversion. Herein, we have conducted simultaneous Cu incorporation in both the core and shell regions of environment-benign AgInSe (AISe)/ZnSe core/shell QDs to realize high-efficiency solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen evolution. It is verified that Cu incorporation in AISe core enables an upward shift in the position of the band edge relative to the ZnSe shell, which promoted the electron delocalization and extended the lifetime of exciton. Simultaneously, Cu incorporation in the ZnSe shell further results in the trapping of photoinduced holes from AISe core, leading to a decelerated recombination of carriers. The prepared Cu-AISe/ZnSe:Cu QDs with optimized optoelectronic properties have been successfully employed to fabricate QDs-PEC devices, delivering a maximum photocurrent density of 9.1 mA cm−2 under standard AM 1.5 G illumination (100 mW cm−2). Our findings indicate that synchronous elemental incorporation in eco-friendly core/shell QDs is a promising strategy to achieve future high-performance solar-to-hydrogen conversion systems.

  • Toward best practice in cancer mutation detection with whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Biotechnology. - : Springer Nature. - 1087-0156 .- 1546-1696. ; 39:9, s. 1141-1150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recommendations are given on optimal read coverage and selection of calling algorithm to maximize the reproducibility of cancer mutation detection in whole-genome or whole-exome sequencing. Clinical applications of precision oncology require accurate tests that can distinguish true cancer-specific mutations from errors introduced at each step of next-generation sequencing (NGS). To date, no bulk sequencing study has addressed the effects of cross-site reproducibility, nor the biological, technical and computational factors that influence variant identification. Here we report a systematic interrogation of somatic mutations in paired tumor-normal cell lines to identify factors affecting detection reproducibility and accuracy at six different centers. Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and whole-exome sequencing (WES), we evaluated the reproducibility of different sample types with varying input amount and tumor purity, and multiple library construction protocols, followed by processing with nine bioinformatics pipelines. We found that read coverage and callers affected both WGS and WES reproducibility, but WES performance was influenced by insert fragment size, genomic copy content and the global imbalance score (GIV; G > T/C > A). Finally, taking into account library preparation protocol, tumor content, read coverage and bioinformatics processes concomitantly, we recommend actionable practices to improve the reproducibility and accuracy of NGS experiments for cancer mutation detection.

  • Changes in different land cover areas and NDVI values in northern latitudes from 1982 to 2015
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advances in Climate Change Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1674-9278. ; 12:4, s. 456-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate warming leads to vast changes in the land cover types and plant biomass in the northern high-latitude regions. The overall trend is of shrubland and tree lines moving northwards, while changes in different land cover types and vegetation growth in response to climate change are largely unknown. Here, we selected land areas with latitudes higher than 50°N as the study area. We compared the land cover type changes and explored relationships between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values of different land cover types, air temperature, and precipitation during 1982–2015 based on dynamic grid. The results indicated that forest and shrubland areas increased as a large area of grassland shifted to forest and shrubland. The snow/ice, tundra and grassland largely have decreased from 1982 to 2015. Although approximately 277.3 × 103 km2 of barren land (6.2% of the total barren land area in 1982) changed to tundra, the tundra area still decreased because some tundra shifted to forest and grassland. The NDVI values of tundra significantly increased, but the shrubland showed a decreasing trend. Temperature in the growing season (June to September) showed the largest positive correlation coefficients with the NDVI values of forest, tundra, grassland, and cropland. However, due to shrubification processes and plant mortality in shrubland areas, the shrubland NDVI showed negative relationship with annual temperature but positively correlated with monthly t. Taken together, although there is large room for improvement of the land cover type data accuracy, our results suggested that the land cover types in high-latitude regions changed significantly, while the NDVI values of the different land cover types showed different responses to climate change.

  • The guide block structure design of boring and trepanning association (BTA) deep hole drilling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. - : SPRINGER LONDON LTD. - 0268-3768 .- 1433-3015. ; 99:1-4, s. 911-918
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the process of boring and trepanning association (BTA) deep hole drilling, the guide block plays the role of guiding, balancing the cutting force and extruding and polishing the machined surface. In this paper, the trapezoidal guide block and the spiral guide block are designed on the basis of ordinary guide block. With simulation and experiment, the cutting force, cutting vibration, and cutting temperature of guide blocks of different shapes during drilling process have been analyzed. When the spiral guide block deep hole drilling is compared with ordinary and trapezoidal guide blocks, it ensures effective cutting performance of BTA deep hole drilling. It also improves the quality of machined surface of the workpiece, reduces the tool wear, and forms stable chips.
