- The paper explores the possibility of understanding music as a contribution to an emerging cultural trauma. The case being explored is the Pulitzer Prize and Grammy winning piece of music On the Transmigration of Souls written by the American composer John Adams – the most frequently performed living American composer in the sphere of classical music. The piece concerns Adams’ response to September 11. It can, briefly so, be described as a sense of a spiritual journey integrating prerecorded street sounds with two choruses, large orchestra and the reading of, among other things, the names of victims. For Adams the artist is someone who uses his gift, as an autonomous art creator, and, at the same time, as a servant and craftsman, tries to lift the spirit of the listeners. While doing that he redefines his expressions in a rich dialogue with the past and challenges current times. In dialogue with the cultural trauma theory, as it is laid out within the strong program in cultural sociology, and with Michael Waltzer’s understanding of social criticism, the paper tries to tease out a cultural sociological understanding of how music as a historically embedded cognitive, moral and aesthetic expression could be part of an emerging cultural trauma, and hence how music, as art with relevance to life as it is lived and experienced, generates capacities for feelings for suffering others, social criticism, and democratic integration.

- In recent years, a large number of refugee children have arrived in Sweden. In this article, 15 Afghan boys tell us about their normative longing for education and schooling ( should ), their experiences of school as an opportunity structure ( being ) and the resilience of their personal agency as regards succeeding in school ( doing ). Our empirical data indicate that, particularly thanks to the efforts of many individual teachers, the boys’ should , being and doing are connected and relatively strong. Nevertheless, school as an opportunity structure also entails challenges: an overly one-sided concentration on the Swedish language as well as frequent absence of multilingual classroom assistants, native language instruction, and inclusion. At the same time, the boys long for and work hard to achieve school success. Strong resilience is not individual, however; it works in connection with a preserved should and a strongly developed, activating being.

- In this chapter the author describes the dissolution of teacher authority as the greatest challenge facing the education system. He focuses on three structural conditions that to a great extent frame adolescence today, and that also mark young people's relationship with all spheres of life, such as school and education, the labour market, economy, family, relationships, housing, sports and the arts. The first condition is that the youth phase has been extended. The second structural condition is the changes in 'the grammar of relationships', which is the cultural expectations and codes that enact the relationships between people in a society. The third structural condition is authority. A successful teacher must be both academically and pedagogically skilled and must become an appealing and long-lasting authority as a result of her relationship capital. The students who indicate that they have good student relationships at the school are also more likely to say the teachers are good.

- Nearly one in three students living in the segregated, multicultural city of Malmo ̈ , Sweden, fails to finish school with a completed diploma. To remedy this situation, students can attend introductory programs, but only some students who do so end up with a diploma. The aim of this article is to understand why young people from a migration background drop out of secondary school and why some of them drop back in and become school achievers. We explore what makes learning matter among youth who drop back into schooling. In seeking possible answers to this question, we listened to and learned from the students themselves. We hope readers will learn about the elementary forms of an enabling opportunity structure for school achievement, about the significance of relational capital, and about the deeply associated meanings of family and friendship and their importance to school success. The article is framed by the interdependencies of two conditioned temporalities: the temporality of the past — that is, the dropping-out process — and the temporality of the present, that is, the dropping-back-in process. We argue that school failure is not an inevitable phenomenon, and show that young people who are supported to drop back into schooling can discover that they are capable of learning with passion and perseverance.

- The article provides a critical interrogation into two categories that to a great extent seems to permeate the field of childhood studies, namely becoming and being. It starts out by an analytic description of the meaning of the two thought categories. This is done in terms of an ideal type-like construction. The actual categories are then being critically deconstructed through the lens of five different but interrelated forms of critic. The category of becoming is being defended while the category of being to a great extent is being denounced. However, the article also argues that there is a specific core meaning within the category of being that undoubtedly needs to be fully accepted. The contribution, then, ends with a bringing together of the defended aspects of becoming and the gratified core meaning of being. Accordingly, the theoretical practices of construction and deconstruction end with an integrative reconstruction: a being in becoming and a becoming in being.

- This article demonstrates what ethnography can do for cultural sociology by investigating the struggles of Muslim immigrants for multicultural integration in Sweden, and native Swedish resistance to it. The discussion is based on the presupposition that data can speak to us, even “surprise” us, due to the theoretical attentiveness the ethnographer can bring to them. Such notion makes it possible for the reader to see that all possible aspects of encounters in everyday life “carry a meaning other than the simple fact of their existence.” The article considers the position of “cultural autonomy” in what less culturally musical sociologists take to be merely divisive material conflicts over boundary position. It shows that many Muslim immigrants, despite their anger and resentment, still yearn for recognition and for the success of Sweden’s social democratic ideals.

- The paper is an answer to Colin Campbell’s intriguing paper “‘All Those Words They Seem to Slip Away’: How the Intentional Fallacy Prevents Serious Study of the Beatles’ Lyrics”. Two questions, it is argued, drives Campbell’s paper. One is about genius: Why is the art of Beatles so great? The other concerns their popularity: Why is the art of Beatles so popular? To Campbell it is the genius of their art, not to forget the lyrics, that explains their popularity. The paper’s critical examination of Campbell’s explanatory turn, to let art explain popularity, is being conceived of as a well-needed cultural sociological one. However, the paper argues, there is a lot more we need to understand if we want to have the art of the Beatles to explain their popularity. Thus, it is a too thin of a description to move from intrinsic qualities of lyrics to affects of listeners.

- In this paper the author himself tells an auto-ethnographical tale about how he came to read and understand Paul Willis's Learning to Labour (1977) in the late 1970s as a 22-year-old non-qualified junior high school teacher of Finnish 'lads' whose parents had come to Sweden as industrial workers in the late 1960s and early1970s. While most of these 'lads' came to reproduce class, the author himself continued to higher education to become a 'class traveller'. Hence, cultural production and cultural autonomy can work in more than one way, even at the very same time.

- I essäboken En fremmed på benken bjuder sociologen Willy Pedersen läsarna på självanalys. Vi tas med på en resa som flätar samman betydelsebärande nedslag i hans liv i och utanför akademin. De flesta av oss har en gång lärt att våra privata liv ska skrivas ut ur våra sociologiska gärningar. Uppgiften är att skriva andras liv in i deras begränsande eller, till och från, möjliggörande omständigheter. Sociologer drivs alltså ofta av begäret att blottlägga ”detta något” som formar och begränsar respondenter på ett sätt som de inte själva, men väl sociologer, förstår. Om denna avslöjande praktik inte upprättar alltför stort avstånd mellan sociolog och läsare kan den senare avtäcka sitt eget vara och känna igen sig själv på ett nytt sätt: ”aha!” ”Också jag”, som exempel, ”är nog en sådan där klassresenär”. Vår sociologiska doxa har alltså sin våta dröm. Sitt kvasikliniska syfte. Om det inte uppfylls är det varken doxa eller dröm som brister. Vi står bara inför individer eller sociala kategorier som till följd av hur deras omständigheter har präglat dem inte förmår uppleva igenkännandets ”aha-effekt”. Just därför tenderar teorier inom alla sociologiska traditioner rymma begrepp som avser att blottlägga vardagliga aktörers oförmåga att i överensstämmelse med en andra ordningens tolkning förstå sig själva. Listan på sådana begrepp kan göras lång. Några exempel: det omedvetna, falskt medvetande, anomi, latent funktion, ond tro, partiellt genomskådande, misskännandets princip, självkonfirmerat handlande, repetitiv performativitet.

- Abstract. Idrottsrörelsens idébudskap om barns- och ungdomars delaktighet är entydigt. Alla unga ska ha rätt att vara föreningsidrottare på olika och föränderliga sätt (idrottens normativa rum). Samtidigt vägleds ungas föreningsidrott med stigande ålder av övertygelsen att endast de bästa ska vara med och träna och tävla (idrottens interna kärnlogik). I detta bidrag görs en presentation och analys av poeten Bengt Cidden Anderssons dikter om fotboll. Syftet är affektivt och normativt: att med litterär föreställningsförmåga som metod vinna läsarens empati och sympati för en rationalitet som ger alla unga rätt till full delaktighet i föreningsidrotten. - The article focuses on the African-American painter Horace Pippin (1888-1946). By using a cultural sociologically informed approach it connects his life – how Pippin became an artist –and art – what his art can mean to us – with the aim of understanding how an art for art’s sake (konstens egenvärde) can be related to, yes, even make up the presupposition for, an art for art’s surplus value (konstens mervärde) concerning issues of race, politics, the arts and diversity. The guiding question is what we can learn from the African-American philosopher Cornell West’s analysis of the meaning of Pippin’s art, which in turn is deeply informed by the sociologist W.E.B Du Bois’ (1868-1963) concept of “double consciousness”; how Pippin paints an African-American everyday life beyond the white gaze. Through such an understanding of Pippin’s, in his own words, “art’s life history, that is my art”, the article also provides an idea of what art didactics might be.

- This article is an introduction to a Special Issue dedicated to Paul Willis’s classic Learning to Labour at its 40th anniversary, and beyond. His theoretically informed and theorizing ethnographic study is read, explored, and utilized all around the globe. Its use also stretches across the borders of social, cultural and educational sciences and to manifold research areas and settings. Besides laying out its main content, that is, the answers to the question of how working-class kids let themselves get working-class jobs, this article argues that the most significant contribution of Willis’s study is the way it illuminates, both theoretically and empirically, the meaning of cultural production and cultural auton- omy in the midst of ongoing social reproduction of class. This introduction ends by presenting the eight contributions to the actual Special Issue, and with an invitation to Paul Willis himself to take issue with cultural production and cultural autonomy.
