    • The purpose of this article is to analyse how education and schooling took part in handling the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in eight European countries (Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Poland and Sweden). The focus is on primary education and on decisions to close schools, or not. Our research was informed by assemblage theory in order to analyse how different components interacted in developing societal responses to mitigate the pandemic. The research was designed as a comparative case study of practical reasoning in diverse contexts. Data sources were the mass media and statements from governments and authorities. Our analyses showed that decisions to close schools, or not, were based on two alternative discourses on schooling. Closing primary schools was a preventive measure underlined by discourses of schools as places for infection. Keeping primary schools open was underlined by a discourse in which schools were conceived of as a place for social supportive measures and caring. Furthermore, the closing alternative was often combined with attempts to replace school practices by distance learning or computerized instruction. Legal constitutions and lawmaking were of significant importance in selecting discourses and the relative impact of different components, mostly political or medical, in responding to the pandemic.

  • Mandibular resection in patients with head and neck cancer : acute and long-term complications after reconstruction

    • Background: The treatment of head and neck cancer is an intensive multimodal treatment that has a great impact on the individual patient.Aims/Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate acute and long-term complications associated with mandibular resections and reconstructions.Material and Methods: We retrospectively retrieved data on complications and recurrences among patients that underwent mandibular resections and reconstructions for treating oral cavity cancer (n = 190 patients) and osteoradionecrosis (ORN, n = 72). Reconstructions included composite grafts (n = 177), soft tissue flaps (n = 61), or primary closure without any graft (n = 24).Results: Forty-two patients that underwent reconstructions with composite grafts displayed serious complications (Clavien–Dindo ≥ IIIa). The complication rates were similar between patients treated for oral cavity cancer and patients treated for ORN. Patients that underwent a primary closure without any graft, had a significantly lower risk of complications compared to patients that underwent the other treatments. After hospitalization, 181 patients (69%) had at least one complication.Conclusions: A majority of patients undergoing resection and reconstruction due to oral cancer/ORN suffered from postoperative complications regardless of indication, comorbidity status or reconstruction technique. The risk of Clavien–Dindo grade IIIa–V events was significantly lower for patients treated with primary closure without grafts. Significance: The results from this study clarifies the importance of in-depth analyse prior to decision of treatment for patients with head and neck cancer.

  • SENCOs’ lived experiences of working through the COVID-19 pandemic in Swedish upper secondary schools

    • This article explores nine SENCOs’ lived experiences of the changes, challenges and opportunities which arose when working in Swedish upper secondary schools through the spring term of 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article provides further insights into the particulars of the SENCOs’ line of work and also aims to say something about the existential aspects of the SENCO profession. The study draws on empirical material generated from semi-structured lifeworld interviews and open-ended diaries. The study design and analysis were conceived and performed using a lifeworld phenomenological approach and hermeneutics. The lived experiences of the SENCOs reveal that they took on new tasks during the pandemic and, at the same time, long-standing issues regarding their professional role seem to have been exacerbated. These findings give insights into the difficulties faced by SENCOs in claiming professional jurisdiction and ask whether SENCOs inadvertently contribute to this problem when driven by a sense of moral obligation towards students with special educational needs. This moral obligation might stand at the heart of what it means to be a SENCO, and is possibly thoroughly intertwined with SENCOs’ agency.
