- This dissertation treats the choreographic works of Julian Algo (1899-1955), a ballet master in the Royal Opera house in Stockholm 1931-1952, whose experience and education were from Theatertanz, and Swedish dance history about his works. Theoretically it is inspired by post-modern historiography (Jenkins, Munslow, White), queer theory (Sedgwick, Doty, Rosenberg) and research about masculinities in dance (Burt). The first chapter is an introductory survey of Algo’s career in Germany. It shows that in Duisburg Algo was recognized as a choreographer with ballet skills, and like other choreographers within German “Theatertanz” he tried to establish new styles through mixing old ballet and modern dance. The chapter also answers question about reception and about whom Algo cooperated with. The second chapter consists of seven analyses in which I deal with the “gusto” and “playfulness” of Algo’s works in Stockholm 1931-1938. These ballet productions are analysed with focus on the concept of queer and gender, also pointing out their good reception and that they in Stockholm were described as modern. Some of the male characters are suggested to be related to dandyism. The chapter also shows that anti-Semitism and scepticism against foreign influences were expressed in the theatre magazine Scenen [The Stage] and that it is relevant to assume that these articles influenced the development in the Opera house. The third chapter shows that Algo’s ballet productions in the book The Swedish ballet (Rootzén1945) was described from a view of classical ballet’s preferences. Now, in 1945, Algo's choreographies from the 1930 were dismissed as being of mixed-genre and lacking ballet skills. Although this chapter in the book was criticised by contemporary critics, it is obvious that it has been of great influence for authors of ballet history in the 2.nd half of the century.

- The aim of this thesis is to characterise the shifting relationship between public and private education in nineteenth-century Sweden. It does so by a study of modern language teaching in Stockholm 1800–1880. Whereas modern languages had long been taught by private language masters, German, French and English were only officially recognised as subjects of public grammar schools in 1807.The study shows that, unlike the impression given by earlier studies, the introduction of public teaching of modern languages did not bring an end to private language instruction. The study further demonstrates that although private language teaching continued to thrive alongside the expanding public language education, the relationship between the two types of education changed over time. Until the 1840s, both private and public education operated as competitors in a local educational market, adjusting their language teaching to local demand and mutual competition. A crucial condition for this competition was the fact that state curriculums still had a relatively limited impact on the actual teaching of public schools.In the later part of the century, the language teaching within public schools became more influenced by the idea of formal education, leading to an increased focus on grammar. Simultaneously, the role of private language instruction evolved into complementing public teaching, primarily by providing the practical proficiency neglected in public schools.While the study questions the importance and effects of central reforms, especially in the earlier decades of the 19th century, it points to other significant factors that influenced the local education market. In particular, the gradual centralisation and systematisation of public schools diminished their ability to cater for local demand. But the growing importance of formal credentials meant that public schools had less need to compete for students. Students were no longer necessarily attracted by the practical usefulness of schooling, creating both the possibility of the specific form of language teaching that developed within public schools, as well as the need of supplementary private instruction.

- The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and analyze how the Royal House of Bernadotte maintained and strengthened its legitimacy in the united kingdoms of Sweden and Norway during the first half of the 19th century. Sweden’s repeated military setbacks during the first decade of that century had undermined the last vestiges of the autocratic monarchy’s legitimacy, and as a consequence King Gustav IV Adolf was deposed in a military coup in March 1809. In June parliament adopted a written constitution and the deposed king’s uncle, Prince Charles, ascended the throne as Charles XIII. Since Charles had no children, parliament in August 1810 elected Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, Marshal of the French Empire and Prince of Pontecorvo, as heir to the Swedish throne.Bernadotte, who in Sweden used the name Charles John and was adopted by Charles XIII, immediately became the country’s regent due to the king’s poor health. In that capacity he managed to restore the country’s bruised military confidence and dampen domestic political tensions. In 1813 he led the Northern Army that helped depose his former brother in arms and relative, Emperor Napoleon I. As a sign of appreciation, Sweden was awarded Norway that since the 1300s had been united with Denmark. When Charles XIII died in 1818, the former revolutionary general was proclaimed Charles XIV, king of Sweden and Norway.In older history writing, Charles John’s rule has been described as conservative, even reactionary. This dissertation is linked to research in recent decades that shows that this picture is oversimplified, and partly misleading. This thesis, which also comprises the reign of Oscar I, describes and analyzes how the first two Bernadotte kings interacted with the new societal formation – the civic society that during the 19th and 20th centuries gradually replaced the older elite-ruled society, first in Norway and later in Sweden. This is done through three substudies. The first shows how the royal house used the royal court as a meeting place and invited civic society representatives there. The second substudy describes how the royal house entered civic society by getting involved in so-called voluntary civic associations. The third, and final, substudy depicts how the heirs to the throne Oscar (I) and Charles (XV) and their siblings were readied for encounters with civic society. The dissertation ties in with two international research trends. On the one hand, the modern research on monarchies where British historian Peter Burke is one of the prominent advocates; and on the other, the interdisciplinary research closely linked to the German sociologist and philosopher Jürgen Habermas, which studies and describes various aspects of the emergence and expression of modern civic society. The dissertation’s overall conclusion is that the Royal House of Bernadotte, seen in an international context, during the period 1810–1860 appeared to be notably civic-minded with a clear civic profile.
