  • Cross-comparison of global simulation models applied to Mercury's dayside magnetosphere
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first comparison of multiple global simulations of the solar wind interaction with Mercury's dayside magnetosphere, conducted in the framework of the international collaborative project SHOTS - Studies on Hermean magnetosphere Oriented Theories and Simulations. Two 3D magnetohydrodynamic and two 3D hybrid simulation codes are used to investigate the global response of the Hermean magnetosphere without its exosphere to a northward-oriented interplanetary magnetic field. We cross-compare the results of the four codes for a theoretical case and a MESSENGER orbit with similar upstream plasma conditions. The models agree on bowshock and magnetopause locations at 2.1 ± 0.11 and 1.4 ± 0.1 Mercury planetary radii, respectively. The latter locations may be influenced by subtle differences in the treatment of the plasma boundary at the planetary surface. The predicted magnetosheath thickness varies less between the codes. Finally, we also sample the plasma data along virtual trajectories of BepiColombo's Magnetospheric and Planetary Orbiter. Our ability to accurately predict the structure of the Hermean magnetosphere aids the analysis of the onboard plasma measurements of past and future magnetospheric missions.

  • Optical signatures of dopants in GaN
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Materials Science in Semiconductor Processing. - : Elsevier BV. - 1369-8001 .- 1873-4081. ; 9:1-3, s. 168-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The characteristic optical spectra for shallow donors and acceptors in GaN are discussed. The most accurate photoluminescence (PL) data are obtained from samples grown on freestanding GaN substrates, where strain shifts are absent and a low spectroscopic line width is obtained. Recent PL data for excitons bound to the O and Si donors are discussed in some detail, giving accurate values for the binding energies and excited bound donor states. The Mg-acceptor is the most important one for p-doping, but the related optical spectra are controversial. We show that there are two acceptors present in Mg-doped GaN, with two different acceptor bound exciton peaks, and also two corresponding lower energy donor-acceptor pair spectra. We give tentative evidence for their interpretation. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Vitreous metabolomics profiling of proliferative diabetic retinopathy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0012-186X .- 1432-0428. ; 64, s. 70-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims/hypothesis Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) with retinal neovascularisation (NV) is a leading cause of vision loss. This study identified a set of metabolites that were altered in the vitreous humour of PDR patients compared with non-diabetic control participants. We corroborated changes in vitreous metabolites identified in prior studies and identified novel dysregulated metabolites that may lead to treatment strategies for PDR. Methods We analysed metabolites in vitreous samples from 43 PDR patients and 21 non-diabetic epiretinal membrane control patients from Japan (age 27-80 years) via ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We then investigated the association of a novel metabolite (creatine) with retinal NV in mouse oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR). Creatine or vehicle was administered from postnatal day (P)12 to P16 (during induced NV) via oral gavage. P17 retinas were quantified for NV and vaso-obliteration. Results We identified 158 metabolites in vitreous samples that were altered in PDR patients vs control participants. We corroborated increases in pyruvate, lactate, proline and allantoin in PDR, which were identified in prior studies. We also found changes in metabolites not previously identified, including creatine. In human vitreous humour, creatine levels were decreased in PDR patients compared with epiretinal membrane control participants (false-discovery rate <0.001). We validated that lower creatine levels were associated with vascular proliferation in mouse retina in the OIR model (p = 0.027) using retinal metabolomics. Oral creatine supplementation reduced NV compared with vehicle (P12 to P16) in OIR (p = 0.0024). Conclusions/interpretation These results suggest that metabolites from vitreous humour may reflect changes in metabolism that can be used to find pathways influencing retinopathy. Creatine supplementation could be useful to suppress NV in PDR.

  • Tourism, animals & the vacant niche : a scoping review and pedagogical agenda
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Tourism. - : Routledge. - 1368-3500 .- 1747-7603. ; , s. 1-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The topic of animal ethics has advanced in tourism studies since its inception in 2000, based on a diverse range of studies on species involvement, types of uses and contexts, level of engagement, states of animals, and theoretical perspectives. While there is still considerable scope to amplify research on animal-based tourism, a gap exists in tourism pedagogy amidst the field’s emphasis on a new expanding consciousness platform. We review the depth of existing scholarship on animal ethics in tourism and develop an agenda for advancing animal ethics pedagogy for the future. Our intent is to issue a call to action for curriculum committees, programme administrators, and educators to recognise and act on this critical moral domain in tourism education.

  • Tuning order-by-disorder multiferroicity in CuO by doping
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 90:1, s. 014437-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high Curie temperature multiferroic compound CuO has a quasidegenerate magnetic ground state that makes it prone to manipulation by the so-called "order-by-disorder" mechanism. First principle computations supplemented with Monte Carlo simulations and experiments show that isovalent doping allows us to stabilize the multiferroic phase in nonferroelectric regions of the pristine material phase diagram with experiments reaching a 250% widening of the ferroelectric temperature window with 5% of Zn doping. Our results allow us to validate the importance of a quasidegenerate ground state on promoting multiferroicity on CuO at high temperatures and open a path to the material engineering of multiferroic materials. In addition we present a complete explanation of the CuO phase diagram and a computation on the incommensurability in excellent agreement with experiment without free parameters.

  • Evidence for Two Mg Related Acceptors in GaN
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:23, s. 235501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The optical signatures of Mg-related acceptors in GaN have been revisited in samples specifically grown on bulk GaN templates, to avoid strain broadening of the optical spectra. Bound-exciton spectra can be studied in these samples for Mg concentrations up to [Mg]approximate to 2x10(19) cm(-3). Contrary to previous work it is found that instabilities in the photoluminescence spectra are not due to unstable shallow donors, but to unstable Mg-related acceptors. Our data show that there are two Mg-related acceptors simultaneously present: the regular (stable) substitutional Mg acceptor, and a complex acceptor which is unstable in p-GaN.

  • Hyaluronan synthase in trabecular meshwork cells.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Br J Ophthalmol. - 0007-1161. ; 87:3, s. 357-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hyaluronan is present in the trabecular meshwork where it is involved in the pathophysiology of aqueous outflow environment. In this study, the expression and regulation of hyaluronan synthase (HAS), which is the enzyme synthesising hyaluronan, in trabecular meshwork cells were investigated. METHODS: Cultured bovine trabecular meshwork cells (BTMCs) were used. HAS expression in BTMCs was examined by RT-PCR. The effects of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) and platelet derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) on HAS expression in BTMCs were examined by quantitative RT-PCR. The HAS2 expression by TGF-beta and PDGF-BB at the protein level was also confirmed immunohistochemically. The production of hyaluronan from BTMCs was detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). RESULTS: Three HAS isoforms were expressed in BTMCs at the mRNA level. Among HAS isoforms, only the expression of HAS2 mRNA was increased by the administration of TGF-beta or PDGF-BB. HAS2 upregulation by these growth factors was also confirmed at the protein level. Further, hyaluronan production from BTMCs was stimulated by TGF-beta or PDGF-BB. CONCLUSION: Expression of HAS in trabecular meshwork may maintain the hyaluronan content in the aqueous outflow pathway. Its production is regulated by TGF-beta and PDGF-BB. The regulation of the expression of HAS in trabecular meshwork might be useful for modulating the aqueous outflow environment.

  • Macromolecular organic matter in samples of the asteroid (162173) Ryugu
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science. - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 379:6634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu were collected and brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We investigated the macromolecular organic matter in Ryugu samples and found that it contains aromatic and aliphatic carbon, ketone, and carboxyl functional groups. The spectroscopic features of the organic matter are consistent with those in chemically primitive carbonaceous chondrite meteorites that experienced parent-body aqueous alteration (reactions with liquid water). The morphology of the organic carbon includes nanoglobules and diffuse carbon associated with phyllosilicate and carbonate minerals. Deuterium and/or nitrogen-15 enrichments indicate that the organic matter formed in a cold molecular cloud or the presolar nebula. The diversity of the organic matter indicates variable levels of aqueous alteration on Ryugus parent body.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in samples of Ryugu formed in the interstellar medium
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Science. - : AMER ASSOC ADVANCEMENT SCIENCE. - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 382:6677, s. 1411-1415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contain less than or similar to 20% of the carbon in the interstellar medium. They are potentially produced in circumstellar environments (at temperatures greater than or similar to 1000 kelvin), by (similar to 10 kelvin) interstellar clouds, or by processing of carbon-rich dust grains. We report isotopic properties of PAHs extracted from samples of the asteroid Ryugu and the meteorite Murchison. The doubly-C-13 substituted compositions (Delta 2x(13)C values) of the PAHs naphthalene, fluoranthene, and pyrene are 9 to 51 parts per thousand higher than values expected for a stochastic distribution of isotopes. The Delta 2x(13)C values are higher than expected if the PAHs formed in a circumstellar environment, but consistent with formation in the interstellar medium. By contrast, the PAHs phenanthrene and anthracene in Ryugu samples have Delta 2x(13)C values consistent with formation by higher-temperature reactions.
