  • Corporate crowdfunding
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Crowdfunding has thus far been run by stand-alone crowdfunding platforms, many of them formed by for-profit companies. However, a number of universities have begun to start their own platforms. These «corporate crowdfunding» platforms are likely to have more resources at their disposal than stand-alone platforms but less flexibility as the overarching organization exerts control and decision-making over crowdfunding projects. This paper examines a university-operated crowdfunding platform called CrowdUni. It discusses existing literature around platforms and the creation of platform ecosystems, before linking the platform to corporate entrepreneurship. It then goes on to theorize around the impact that being housed inside an existing organization may have on the functioning of the platform and resulting platform ecosystem, before presenting some initial findings.

  • Crowdfunding in Action: How Institutional Logics Encourage and Constrain Affordance Perception
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A number of crowdfunding platforms have emerged in recent years, reaching 800 in 2012. However, these platforms have arisen in different countries and contexts, subject to different institutional norms and logics. The perceived affordances of crowdfunding are affected by these differing contexts and these institutional norms and logics may act as constraints on affordance perception. This paper examines one such case, the case of reward-based crowdfunding in Sweden, where the prevailing norms and logics shaped ICT entrepreneurs perceptions of crowdfunding, constraining their perception of crowdfunding as providing either a viable form of funding, or of publicity.

  • Introduction to the Crowdfunding and the "Wisdom of the Crowds Minitrack
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Crowdfunding research thus far has largely examined its link to entrepreneurship, despite the phenomenon's digital nature. This mini-track calls for papers that delve into the digital, or information systems, involved in crowdfunding.

  • Solving the puzzle of crowdfunding : Solving the puzzle of crowdfunding
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Crowdfunding has been embraced by entrepreneurs across the globe as an alternative to traditional sources of funding. However, it is not clear that ICT entrepreneurs in Sweden have embraced it as warmly, despite the potential benefits it offers. This paper explores this empirical puzzle in light of two complementary theoretical literatures: institutional entrepreneurship and technology affordances. It first examines existing institutional logics around startup investment before turning to the features of crowdfunding and whether ICT entrepreneurs perceive these as affordances. We discuss the tension among these affordances, institutional logics, and the crowdfunding platform providers' attempts as an institutional entrepreneur to become "taken for granted" as a legitimate part of the Swedish start-up institutional field. © 2014 IEEE.

  • Designed entrepreneurial legitimacy: the case of a Swedish crowdfunding platform
  • 2019

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital entrepreneurs face the liability of newness, like any other entrepreneur. However, this liability of newness is manifested differently: it is mediated by an artefact, in this case a platform. This paper examines how a digital entrepreneur mediated by a platform can build legitimacy, something hitherto thought to be embedded within a social relationship (that is, one that a digital platform may be unable to have). Based on a qualitative research design, we develop the concept of “designed legitimacy”, and we point to how trust may not be enough to overcome the liability of newness. Rather, legitimacy is needed to attract users and resources, and thus for growth and success. We further highlight the means through which a platform may come to be seen as legitimate, namely by designing with legitimacy in mind: by using symbols in design, asymmetric legitimacy building, and sequential two-stage legitimacy building. We end the paper with propositions for further study and the implications of this research for digital entrepreneurship and platforms.

  • Expanding the horizons of digital social networks: Mixing big trace datasets with qualitative approaches
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Information and Organization. - : Elsevier: 24 months. - 1471-7727. ; 26:1-2, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of social networks has attracted much interest from the IS community in recent years, driven mainly by the accessibility of trace data that remain as a by-product of interactions conducted through technology-enabled platforms. Despite its rapidly growing influence, we have some concerns about the current trajectory of social network research in the IS field. Our purpose in this commentary piece is to accentuate for the new generation of social network researchers, who are au fait with mathematical techniques for analyzing massive digital datasets, how the combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches can enrich our understanding of networks. First we highlight how the social network perspective has contributed to our understanding of IS phenomena. Next we review mixed methods research in IS social network research. An agenda for future IS social network research is then presented where we suggest how qualitative approaches can best complement trace data in addressing focal social network questions. We conclude by discussing the challenges of conducting mixed method studies of digitally enabled social network.

  • Digital Organizing for Social Impact: Current Insights and Future Research Avenues on Collective Action, Social Movements, and Digital Technologies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Information and organization. - : Elsevier BV. - 1471-7727. ; 29:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital technologies such as social media have drastically transformed the contexts and processes associated with collective action. New actors have gotten involved in efforts at changing the societal status quo, existing actors have adjusted to new ways of organizing digitally, and original forms of social movements have emerged and grown. All these developments do not, however, hold the potential for unequivocally positive societal impact. New forms of abuse and many unintended consequences have also multiplied. It is high time to take stock of the insights from current scholarship on these important issues. Here we bring together major findings from existing scholarship and introduce the papers of this special issue. We also propose an agenda for future research by highlighting ongoing debates and issues that require further consideration. Questions associated with the increasingly intricated participation of human and technological agents deserve attention, for instance. Careful considerations of the actual impact of digital organizing at different levels (e.g., individual, group, organization, society) also require further scholarship. We finally caution researchers to be ethical and to remain careful of the potential for use and misuse of their scholarship on these important and often polemical topics.
