  • Caucasus Studies : Migration, Society and Language. Papers from the conference, November 28-30 2008, Malmö University
  • 2011
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The volume includes papers presented at the multidisciplinary conference Caucasus Studies: Migration – Society – Language, held on November 28-30 2008 at Malmö University, shortly after the dramatic events of the Georgian-Russian war. Researchers on the Caucasus from a variety of disciplinary perspectives gathered around the themes: Armed conflicts and conflict resolution, The Caucasus and global politics, Identities in transition, Migration and identity, Language contact and migration, and Diaspora studies. Papers from this broad spectrum of topics are represented in the volume. The languages of the conference were English and Russian, and the volume therefore includes papers in both these languages. The organizing of this international conference and the presence of a large number of participants from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and North Caucasus would not have been possible without the generous support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

  • On olfactory terminology in Georgian and other Kartvelian languages
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Linguistics of Olfaction. - Amsterdam : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 9789027260178 - 9789027208408 ; , s. 113-135
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present chapter is a study of the system of olfactory expressions in Georgian, Megrelian, and other Kartvelian languages, including questions of etymology and semantic extensions. Olfactory expressions in the Kartvelian languages are explored with Viberg (1984) as a point of departure, making a division into activity, experience and copulative (source-based) expressions. The study largely relies on data from text corpora of Standard Georgian as well as Georgian dialects. The Kartvelian languages are shown to exhibit specific olfactory terminology, but show numerous examples of expressions being used in several perception modalities.

  • Case marking in infinitive (ad-form) clauses in Old Georgian
  • 1997
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A specific feature of both Modern and Old Georgian is that case marking of subjects and objects is sensitive to the choice of tense/aspect. This paper focuses on a construction that was found in complementation in Old Georgian (5th-11th centuries) where alongside with finite forms, an infinitive began to develop. Generally, this was a verb-noun in the adverbial case (-(a)d): tesva ‘sowing’ –> tesva-d ‘sow’. As the infinitive lacks expression of tense/aspect it is not able to assign case to its arguments in the same way as a finite verb does in Georgian. In this paper we will show that case marking of the direct object (and sometimes of the subject) of the infinitive is determined by the tense/aspect of the matrix verb.

  • Ėrgativnost' v čerkesskich jazykach
  • 2006
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The monograph is a study of clause structure in the closely related Circassian languages, Adyghe and Kabardian, two minority languages spoken in Northern Caucasus. The Circassian languages exhibit ergative patterns in both case marking and the alignment of personal prefixes in the verb. Both these domains of grammar are studied extensively in the book, as are issues relating to ergative/absolutive marking in clauses with different types of verb (intransitive, transitive, labile, inversive). Another topic is ergative marking in complex constructions, including coordination and subordination. The monograph is the result of joint research conducted in Russia and Sweden. The basis for this research has been the project ‘Ergativity in the Circassian languages’ (with support from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences). The institutions involved are the Institute of Linguistics at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Lund University and the School of International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER) at Malmö University.

  • Ergative case in the Circassian languages
  • 1996
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Circassian languages (Northwest Caucasian) exhibit ergative patterns both in case marking and in the alignment of agreement markers in the verb. Ergative/absolutive case marking is restricted to certain types of nominals, which thus results in split-ergativity. The paper examines the marking of ergative/absolutive case in various types of nominals and relates the distribution to the Nominal Hierarchy. The Circassian languages Adyghe (West Circassian) and Kabardian (East Circassian) belong to the West Caucasian languages. They are spoken by 568.000 in the Caucasus and also by great numbers in Turkey and other neighbouring countries. The problem of ergativity in the Circassian languages is treated in works such as Jakovlev & Ashkhamaf 1941, Rogava & Kerasheva 1966, Taov 1967, Zekokh 1967, Kumakhov 1971, 1989, Gishev 1985, Kumakhov & Vamling to appear.

  • Fifteen minutes of fame long gone : Circassian activism before and after the Sochi Olympics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445. ; 20:4, s. 505-517
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we discuss the effects of the Sochi Olympics on the indigenous Circassian population in North Caucasus. The Circassian situation was paradoxical in the sense that whereas this indigenous group fiercely opposed the organization of the Winter Games in Sochi, the Games themselves denoted a rare opportunity for them to make their voices heard internationally. During the run-up to the Olympics they all of a sudden had a global audience for their claims for recognition of their cause. This was quite simply their ‘fifteen minutes of fame’, a rare and short-lived period of celebrity and worldwide attention. The paper will look into whether the anti-Sochi activism helped to unite Circassians in the diaspora and abroad around common claims, and to what extent the Circassians managed to use media attention to make their cause more widely known by international society.

  • Vanished in the Haze : White Elephants, Environmental Degradation and Circassian Marginalization in Post-Olympics Sochi
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Mega Events in Post-Soviet Russia. - New York : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137490940 ; , s. 59-76
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we will turn our attention to three areas that before the Sochi Olympics were often discussed as particularly acute problems in relation to the Olympics. The first one of these is related to infrastructural investments in the area and the risk of them being turned into so-called white elephants, costing a lot of money and being of no actual use, neither by the local population nor by tourists to the region. The second theme regards the feared environmental degradation due to the organization of the mega-event and the extent to which the prognosticated problems have come to materialize. These two are matters that in one shape or another seem to be brought up in relation to all Olympics in contemporary times, possibly with the exception of the Lillehammer Olympics of 1994. The third theme, which enjoyed substantial attention before the Olympics, is however specially related to the Sochi Olympics. It deals with the indigenous Circassian population and the extent to which its members were maltreated, marginalized and squeezed out from the geographical area which constitutes their homeland. Despite their seeming disparity, the basic reason for bringing up the three subjects in the chapter is the same: to argue the need for continued attention to perceived trouble-spots even after the close of the Games.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445. ; :4, s. 455-460
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, were during the preparations and run-up phase intensely followed by the global community and were generally associated with a vast array of problems: political, democratic, economic, ecological and securityrelated. When the hosting of a mega-event such as the Olympic Games has been awarded to a site in an authoritarian state, the global community has moral responsibilities to live up to. There is a need and an obligation to raise one’s voice and criticize where criticism is due also after the Games are concluded. For Sochi, as for sites of all major sports events, continued critical attention is therefore warranted also after the competitions. It is essential to try to gauge the extent to which predicted problems materialized, what happened afterwards, and what have been the more long-term consequences and local effects. This is the general perspective that brought the authors of this special issue together.

  • The Sochi Predicament : Contexts, Characteristics and Challenges of the Olympic Winter Games in 2014
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For a variety of political, climatic, ecological, security-related and other resons, the Russian summer resort of Sochi by the Black Sea would seem a most unlikely candidate for the Olympic Winter Games. Despite this, the Games will be held there in February 2014, and the Russian leaders regard the Games as a highly prestigious project underlining Russia's return to a status of great power in the contemporary world. This book conducts a thorough inventory of the contexts, characteristics and challenges facing the Sochi Games. It deals with the problems from Russian, Georgian, Abkhazian and Circassian pespectives and makes in-depth analyses of profound challenges related to matters such as identity, security, and ethnic relations. The book brings together an international group of eminent scholars representing different disciplinary perspectives, including political science, sports science, ethics, ethnology, and Caucasian studies.

  • Display window or tripwire? : the Sochi winter games, the Russian great power ideal and the legitimacy of Vladimir Putin
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Euxeinos. - : Center for Governance and Culture in Europe, University of S:t Gallen. - 2296-0708. ; :12, s. 6-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • President Vladimir Putin’s claim and policies to resurrect Russia as a great power have been a cornerstone for the construction of the hegemonic position of power that he has for so long successfully exerted and upheld. This paper discusses the Russian great power ambitions in relation to national identity and popular appeal, and puts them in relation to the upcoming Winter Games in Sochi in 2014. The paper examines how this mega-event is discursively constructed as a manifestation of Russia’s return to great power status, and as such is meant to convey certain messages internally as well as externally. The successful carrying out of the Games would no doubt constitute an important component in the undergirding of the – otherwise visibly dwindling - legitimacy of President Putin. They would be an important display window for manifesting the prowess of the Russian great power, and the location of the Games to the Caucasian city of Sochi in the Russian South would have a deeply symbolical aspect. If the Games can be successfully carried out in a region that has for so long been experienced as volatile and unruly, then it must surely mean that internal order has been restored in the Russian great power. However, it is argued in the article that there are several potential tripwires on the way towards achieving these symbolically important goals. Problems of security, terrorism, geopolitical volatility, large-scale corruption and inter-ethnic tension loom large, and may all turn out to be formidable obstacles and render the hosting of the Games a counter-productive enterprise. The paper puts official discourse (as in official speeches, media interviews, et cetera) in relation to scholarly analyses of the problems and potentialities of the Sochi Olympics, all in the general framework of Russia’s self-image and identity as a great power.

  • Identifying the Caucasus as a region in a historical perspective : A corpus-based study on the uses of the concept ‘Caucasus’
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Congress of Caucasian Studies, Tbilisi, October 3-5, 2022. - Tbilisi. ; , s. 1-10
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The paper addresses the question of when the understanding of the Caucasus region started to emerge in Europe, that is, when ‘Caucasus’ was used with respect to a region and not only referred to a mountain range. A closely related issue is the extent of the region that ‘Caucasus’ refers to, its territorial spread. My perspective is an outsider’s perspective: how the region was perceived and reported on by outsiders. It is not about how the Caucasus was perceived from the inside of the region, about what makes the Caucasus a region – its historical, linguistic and cultural common roots and identity. My starting point is to take a closer look at how the concept of the Caucasus region developed. I focus on the development in Sweden, a country on the European periphery. Studies of the Caucasus were more developed and more well-known in central European countries such as Germany, France and the UK. That is also a reason why it is interesting to explore the understanding of the Caucasus in the European periphery. It’s well-known that the Caucasus mountain range was a well-established geographical entity already in antiquity and the Middle Ages and it regularly appeared on early maps. This study is based on the use of the term ‘Caucasus’ and closely related concepts in a digital corpus of Swedish newspapers from the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition, as a wider frame of reference, a corpus of old European maps of the region from the same period was compiled and is also discussed.

  • New Initiatives in Diachronic Linguistics : Atlases of Language and Culture
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Festschrift for Academician Thomas Gamkrelidze – Akademikosi Tamaz Gamqrelidze 90. - : Tbilisi University Press. - 9789941138829 ; , s. 151-161
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper deals with two recent initiatives within diachronic linguistics, where earlier seminal work by Academician Prof. Tamaz Gamkrelidze and his colleagues (Gamkrelidze and Ivanov 1984, Gamkrelidze, Ivanov and Winter 1995) have been of fundamental importance: the database project Diachronic Atlas of Comparative Linguistics (DiACL) and the Mouton Atlas of Languages and Cultures (Carling, 2019). The scope of the DiACL database and the Mouton Atlas is languages and cultures in Eurasia, with a focus on the Indo-European languages and cultures. DiACL covers data from 500 languages (in Eurasia, South America, Austronesia) and the Mouton Atlas deals with almost 200 languages (all in Eurasia). Both the DiACL database and the Mouton Atlas have been developed at the Centre for Languages and Literature at Lund University with Dr. Gerd Carling as principal investigator and project leader. The DiACL database and the Atlas include a substantial amount of material from the languages of the Caucasus. Apart from Kartvelian, Nakho-Dagestanian and Northwest Caucasian data, Turkic (Azerbaijani, Balkar-Karachai), Armenian and Iranian (Ossetic, Tat, Talysh) materials have been included. The empirical data in this part of the DiACL database and the Atlas rely primarily on a close cooperation with specialists at academic centres in the Caucasus, in particular with professors Merab Chukhua, Teimuraz Gvantseladze, Madzhid Khallilov and Acherdan Abregov (all contributors cannot be mentioned here, but are credited in the publications). Work on the Caucasian data has been coordinated by myself and Revaz Tchantouria at the Section for Caucasus Studies at Malmö University (Sweden) together with visiting researchers Elnur Aliyev, Maka Tetradze and Tamuna Lomadze during the years 2013-2018. The current work is a study spanning grammatical, lexical and cultural data, and “follows in the footsteps of a much older tradition: historical-comparative handbooks on the aspects and consequences of language reconstruction” (2019, 1), referring to (Gamkrelidze and Ivanov 1984) and a few other publications. However, a marked difference in approaches between such earlier studies and the current work is the reliance on quantitative methods and computerized statistical analyses of DiACL and the Mouton Atlas. For instance, the grammatical and typological information is analyzed in terms of absence versus presence of distinct grammatical features. GIS-technique (Geographic Information Systems) is widely used throughout the database and the atlas to represent and visualize spatio-geographic patterning of grammatical and typological as well as lexical data. Approaching the question of Eurasian prehistory, Carling (2019, 180) supports the position that “[t]he unrelatedness of Eurasian isolates such as Basque, Caucasian families, Etruscan, Sumerian, or Hattian, provide a strong argument in favor of a high diversity predating the large, migrating families, i.e. Indo-European, Uralic and Turkic.” She notes that previous (substrate) linguistic material potentially could occur in the data and that “[w]e are also attracted by the theory of ancient convergence areas (Gamkrelidze and Ivanov 1984), where lexemes and concepts may have been distributed, borrowed, and migrated over language boundaries in prehistory.” (Carling 2019, 180). • For a variety of political, climatic, ecological, security-related and other reasons, the Russian summer resort of Sochi by the Black Sea would seem a most unlikely candidate for the Olympic Winter Games. Despite this, the Games will be held there in February 2014, and the Russian leaders regard the Games as a highly prestigious project underlining Russia’s return to a status of great power in the contemporary world. This book conducts a thorough inventory of the contexts, characteristics and challenges facing the Sochi Games. It deals with the problems from Russian, Georgian, Abkhazian and Circassian perspectives and makes in-depth analyses of profound challenges related to matters such as identity, security, and ethnic relations. The book brings together an international group of eminent scholars representing different disciplinary perspectives, including political science, sports science, ethics, ethnology, and Caucasian studies.
