  • Design of the study : Selecting societies of settlement and immigrant groups
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Immigrant Youth in Cultural Transition. - New York : Routledge. - 9781003309192 - 9781032313269 - 9781032313276 ; , s. 15-46
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter describes the design and the contextual backgrounds of the societies of settlement and the immigrant groups involved in the ICSEY project. The cultural principle requires the elaboration of some features of the societies of settlement, and of the immigrant groups that have come to settle in them, and an account of the nature of their intercultural relationships. Although the percentage of immigrants residing in a society is one indicator of cultural diversity, other indicators are available in the literature. Australia has a high level of immigration, with 24.6% of the population of nearly 20 million not born in the country. Israel is a country of high immigration, with 37.4% of its population of almost 6 million having been born abroad. Israel is thus high on actual diversity. Two thirds of the US population believe that rates of immigration should be reduced.

  • Missing values in peer assessment of social behavior using the RCP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Social Behavior and Personality. - 0301-2212. ; 29:1, s. 71-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with probable causes for missing values when using the Revised Class Play instrument for peer assessment of social behavior. The study was conducted with 10-13 year old primary school children in Sweden. The findings reveal that missing values may be caused by the cognitive and linquistic complexity of the instrument (RCP), as well as by gender stereotypes. The results indicated that investigatin the causes of missing values provides valuable information about the validity of the RCP. This information can be used to improve the instructions on how and when to use the RCP.

  • Immigration, acculturation and the paradox of adaptation in Europe
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Developmental Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1740-5629 .- 1740-5610. ; 5:2, s. 138-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing from the International Comparative Study of Ethnocultural Youth (ICSEY) dataset, this paper examines the immigrant paradox phenomenon among a group of immigrant youth in five European countries. The sample consisted of over 2700 immigrant and 1400 national youth (age range 13-18 years) living in Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden. At the core of the immigrant paradox is the counterintuitive finding that immigrants often show better adaptation outcomes than their national peers in spite of poorer socioeconomic status. However, the paper argues for a more conservative position based on three criteria for concluding the existence of the paradox. On the bases of these criteria, the paper found mixed support for the immigrant paradox. Whereas the pattern of socio-cultural adaptation for first- and second-generation immigrants resembled the immigrant paradox, results for psychological adaptation were opposite to the paradox. Reasons for the mixed findings are discussed.

  • The Relation Between the Bifactor Model of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory and Conduct Problems in Adolescence : Variations Across Gender, Ethnic Background, and Age
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 29:8, s. 1065-1070
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current study examines how the bifactor model of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory (YPI) is related to conduct problems in a sample of Dutch adolescents (N = 2,874; 43% female). It addresses to what extent the YPI dimensions explain variance over and above a General Psychopathy factor (i.e., one factor related to all items) and how the general factor and dimensional factors are related to conduct problems. Group differences in these relations for gender, ethnic background, and age were examined. Results showed that the general factor is most important, but dimensions explain variance over and above the general factor. The general factor, and Affective and Lifestyle dimensions, of the YPI were positively related to conduct problems, whereas the Interpersonal dimension was not, after taking the general factor into account. However, across gender, ethnic background, and age, different dimensions were related to conduct problems over and above the general factor. This suggests that all 3 dimensions should be assessed when examining the psychopathy construct.

  • Variants of Psychopathy and the Dependence on Gender, Age, and Ethnic Background
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Personality Disorders. - : Guilford Publications. - 0885-579X .- 1943-2763. ; 32:6, s. 721-737
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current study examines variants of psychopathy in a community sample of Dutch adolescents (N = 2,855, 57% male) using three dimensions of psychopathy and trait anxiety. Five subgroups were identified, two with high levels of psychopathic traits. The first seemed consistent with primary psychopathy, high on all dimensions, with additional low levels of anxiety, whereas the second showed elevated levels of anxiety, consistent with secondary psychopathy. Two variants low on psychopathic traits were identified: a low-risk variant and an anxious variant. Further, a moderate-risk group was found, with slightly above average psychopathy traits and average levels of mental health problems. The secondary psychopathy and the anxious variant reported the most problem behaviors. Boys, younger adolescents, and non-Western immigrant youth were overrepresented in the secondary group. These findings show that in a community sample psychopathy is a heterogeneous phenomenon.
