  • THE 2014 ALMA LONG BASELINE CAMPAIGN: AN OVERVIEW
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 808:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to similar to 15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from 2014 September to late November, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C 138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at similar to 350 GHz. Observing with ALMA on baselines of up to 15 km is now possible, and opens up new parameter space for submm astronomy.

  • Genetic architecture of spatial electrical biomarkers for cardiac arrhythmia and relationship with cardiovascular disease
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1, s. 1411-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 3-dimensional spatial and 2-dimensional frontal QRS-T angles are measures derived from the vectorcardiogram. They are independent risk predictors for arrhythmia, but the underlying biology is unknown. Using multi-ancestry genome-wide association studies we identify 61 (58 previously unreported) loci for the spatial QRS-T angle (N = 118,780) and 11 for the frontal QRS-T angle (N = 159,715). Seven out of the 61 spatial QRS-T angle loci have not been reported for other electrocardiographic measures. Enrichments are observed in pathways related to cardiac and vascular development, muscle contraction, and hypertrophy. Pairwise genome-wide association studies with classical ECG traits identify shared genetic influences with PR interval and QRS duration. Phenome-wide scanning indicate associations with atrial fibrillation, atrioventricular block and arterial embolism and genetically determined QRS-T angle measures are associated with fascicular and bundle branch block (and also atrioventricular block for the frontal QRS-T angle). We identify potential biology involved in the QRS-T angle and their genetic relationships with cardiovascular traits and diseases, may inform future research and risk prediction.

  • ICRF-code benchmark activity in the framework of the European task-force on integrated Tokamak Modelling
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : American Institute of Physics. - 9780735412101 ; , s. 291-294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The grand aim of the Integrated Tokamak Modelling (ITM) task-force is to provide a flexible, modular and reliable plasma simulator in view of planning and analyzing ITER discharges. Since radio-frequency (rf) heating in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) is foreseen as one of the main additional heating systems in ITER, physics modules that simulate ICRF wave propagation and absorption are necessary for the ITM project. Here, we report on the status of the benchmark activity of ICRF codes, already imported in ITM environment platform. We consider various scenarios for ITER, limiting the comparisons to wave propagation and absorption in Maxwellian plasmas.

  • Health-related quality of life and orthosis use in a Swedish population with arthrogryposis
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Prosthetics and Orthotics International. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0309-3646 .- 1746-1553. ; 42:4, s. 402-409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Joint contractures are the main characteristics for children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. Orthoses are often used to enable or facilitate walking. Objectives: To describe health-related quality of life in children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and satisfaction with orthoses in those using orthoses. Methods: A total of 33 children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita participated in the study. Questionnaires were used which measured health-related quality of life (Child Health Questionnaire-Parent Form and EQ-5D youth), mobility and self-care (Paediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory) and satisfaction with orthoses (Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology 2.0). Children were divided into groups based on the use of orthoses: Ort-D were dependent on orthoses for walking, Ort-ND used orthoses but were not dependent on them for walking and Non-Ort did not use orthoses. Results: Children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita had significantly lower Child Health Questionnaire scores in 9 of 12 subscales compared to healthy controls. The children's reported perceived health with EQ-5D youth did not show any difference between children using orthoses or children using only shoes. Paediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory showed less mobility in Ort-D than in Non-Ort. In total, both orthosis groups were quite satisfied' with their orthoses. Conclusion: Child Health Questionnaire-physical functioning was lowest in children who were dependent on orthoses (Ort-D) for walking. Both Ort-D and Ort-ND were similar satisfied with their orthoses. Clinical relevance This study contributes to knowledge about health-related quality of life in a group of ambulatory children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. For children using orthoses, it is relevant to capture their opinion about their orthoses but a questionnaire specifically for children should be developed.

  • Calibration of ALMA as a Phased Array. ALMA Observations During the 2017 VLBI Campaign
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. - : IOP Publishing. - 0004-6280 .- 1538-3873. ; 131:1001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a detailed description of the special procedures for calibration and quality assurance of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) mode. These procedures are required to turn the phased ALMA array into a fully calibrated VLBI station. As an illustration of these methodologies, we present full-polarization observations carried out with ALMA as a phased array at 3 mm (Band 3) and 1.3 mm (Band 6) as part of Cycle-4. These are the first VLBI science observations conducted with ALMA and were obtained during a 2017 VLBI campaign in concert with other telescopes worldwide as part of the Global mm-VLBI Array (GMVA, April 1-3) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT, April 5-11) in ALMA Bands 3 and 6, respectively.

  • A model for self-consistent simulation of ICRH suitable for integrating modelling
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 53:9, s. 093004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A self-consistent modelling of ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) is reviewed with the aim of obtaining a fast robust scheme suitable for routine simulation for transport codes and data analysis. Due to the complexity of calculating the wave field and the distribution function self-consistently simplifications are necessary. To improve modelling of the wave field, methods are developed to include higher order finite Larmor radius terms, up-and downshifts of the parallel wave number and to improve calculations of damping due to the transit time magnetic pumping in finite element wave codes without decomposing the wave locally into planar waves. A new code, SELFO-light, for self-consistent modelling of ion cyclotron heating suitable for routine calculations is developed. The code is based on coupling the global wave code LION with a simple one-dimensional time-dependent Fokker-Planck code. Both the wave and the Fokker-Planck codes use finite element representations. The importance of self-consistent modelling of ion cyclotron heating is illustrated by studying the effect on the power partition for a fast wave current drive scenario at lower harmonic resonances in a deuterium plasma. It is found that the fraction of the power absorbed on the deuterium and the time to reach the steady state vary strongly depending on the position of the resonances. It is found that the deuterium absorption becomes strongly localized to regions where the resonances are tangential to the magnetic flux surfaces.

  • EUROfusion-theory and advanced simulation coordination (E-TASC): programme and the role of high performance computing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6587 .- 0741-3335. ; 64:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a written summary of an overview oral presentation given at the 1st Spanish Fusion High Performance Computer (HPC) Workshop that took place on the 27 November 2020 as an online event. Given that over the next few years ITER24 will move to its operation phase and the European-DEMO design will be significantly advanced, the EUROfusion consortium has initiated a coordination effort in theory and advanced simulation to address some of the challenges of the fusion research in Horizon EUROPE (2021-2027), i.e. the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. This initiative has been called E-TASC, which stands for EUROfusion-Theory and Advanced Simulation Coordination. The general and guiding principles of E-TASC are summarized in this paper. In addition, an overview of the scientific results obtained in the pilot phase (2019-2020) of E-TASC are provided while highlighting the importance of the required progress in computational methods and HPC techniques. In the initial phase, five pilot theory and simulation tasks were initiated: towards a validated predictive capability of the low to high transition and pedestal physics; runaway electrons in tokamak disruptions in the presence of massive material injection; fast code for the calculation of neoclassical toroidal viscosity in stellarators and tokamaks; development of a neutral gas kinetics modular code; European edge and boundary code for reactor-relevant devices. In this paper, we report on recent progress made by each of these projects.

  • Status of the benchmark activity of ICRF full-wave codes within EUROfusion WPCD and beyond
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: RADIOFREQUENCY POWER IN PLASMAS. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 9780735413368
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As follow-up of the benchmark activity of ICRF full-wave codes within the EUROfusion Code Development for Integrated Modelling project (WPCD), a simple-to-complex approach has been devised for verification of the European ICRF codes, imported in the European-Integrated Modelling infrastructure, which represents a unique environment for input-data sharing and result analysis. This benchmark activity has been recently extended to non-European codes, in particular the ICRF full-wave AORSA code. Here we discussed the results of this benchmark.

  • Walking, orthoses and physical effort in a Swedish population with arthrogryposis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of children's orthopaedics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1863-2521 .- 1863-2548. ; 8:4, s. 305-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excessive movements during walking have been observed by gait analysis in children with arthrogryposis (AMC) using orthoses compared to children using only shoes. The aim of this study was to evaluate energy expenditure and functional exercise capacity in children with AMC. Methods Twenty-four children with AMC and 25 typically developing (TD) children underwent oxygen measurement and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Children were divided into AMC1 using knee–ankle–foot orthoses with locked knee joints (KAFO-LK); AMC2 KAFOs with open knee joints (KAFO-O) or ankle–foot orthoses (AFO); and AMC3 using shoes. Results The net non-dimensional oxygen cost (NNcost) was lower in TD (0.308) than in AMC2 (0.455, n = 10) ( p = 0.002). There were no differences in the net non-dimensional consumption (NNconsumption) or normalised walking velocity. The lowest NNconsumption (0.082), NNcost (0.385) and normalised walking velocity (0.214) were found in AMC1 ( n = 3), but no statistical calculation was performed. In the 6MWT, both AMC2 (402.7, n = 11) and AMC3 (476.8, n = 10) walked shorter distances (m) than TD (565.1) ( p < 0.001 and p = 0.043, respectively). AMC2 (0.435) had lower normalised walking velocity than TD (0.564) ( p < 0.001). Conclusions Children with AMC using open KAFOs or AFOs (AMC2) had higher energy effort represented by significantly higher NNcost than TD, whereas AMC children requiring only shoes (AMC3) did not differ significantly from TD. To maintain the NNconsumption at an acceptable level, children using locked KAFOs (AMC1) slowed down their walking velocity. Compared to TD, the exercise capacity was lower in children with AMC using open KAFOs or AFOs and shoes, represented by lower walking velocity and shorter distance walked during the 6MWT.

  • A dielectric response model for FEM solutions of ICRF wave fields
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics, Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 401:1, s. 012009-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelling of fast wave ICRF heating in large machines with high density such as DEMO is challenging because of the short wave lengths. Therefore, fast, efficient global wave solvers are necessary. A major difficulty with calculating the wave field in a spatial dispersive medium is that the dielectric tensor becomes a function of the local wave vector, which in its turn depends on the solution. Furthermore, the solution may consist of several waves co-existing at the same location subjected to separate response functions. In order to model upshift of the parallel wave vector, higher order FLR-effects on the cyclotron absorption and TTMP damping for the electron absorption methods based on iteration, suitable for FEM codes, are proposed.

  • Modeling ICRH and ICRH-NBI Synergy in High Power JET Scenarios Using European Transport Simulator (ETS)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 23rd topical conference on radiofrequency power in plasmas. - : AIP Publishing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Integrated Modelling effort (EU-IM) provides the European Transport Simulator (ETS) [1] which was designed to simulate arbitrary tokamak plasma discharges. Two new 1D Fokker-Planck solvers have recently been implemented within ETS: StixRedist [3] and FoPla [4]. To ensure the CPU time remains acceptable, the latter was parallelized with a generic and easy to implement method. In this paper, it will be shown how these modules were integrated in the ETS workflow in particular a first approach adopted to reach a consistency between wave and Fokker-Planck equation resolution. Also, the Verification and Validation efforts will be discussed. JET shots were analyzed and the ETS predictions were cross-checked against earlier validated codes external to the EU-IM effort, TRANSP [5] in particular, as well as against experimental neutron yield data. A good agreement was obtained, both when comparing the predictions with other codes for cases within their reach (minority or beam populations) and with experimental neutron yield data. Simulations illustrating the exploitation of the nonlinear collision operator when solving a set of coupled Fokker-Planck equations for cases when majority species play a key role will be also shown.

  • Gyrokinetic modelling of macro-instabilities in high performance tokamak plasmas
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 43, s. A207-A216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The modelling of Alfvenic instabilities is discussed from the point of view of mode-conversion, showing how the development of the theory affects the predictions as the limitations of the models are gradually relaxed. Conventional tokamak plasmas are relatively well understood and are used for the case of a kinetic Alfven eigenmode (AE) to assess the resonant wave-particle interactions along the magnetic field. The large safety factor in the core of deeply reversed shear plasmas and the low magnetic field of spherical tokamaks, however, bring the AEs down into the drift-frequency range; modifications of the spectrum through toroidal mode-conversion then creates a new class of drift-kinetic AEs that could affect the fast particle confinement. Experiments have been carried out to verify these predictions in JET. They confirm the presence of weakly damped modes, which do not follow the usual AEs scaling.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 40:7, s. 1343-1348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) with intermediate toroidal mode numbers are modelled using the global gyrokinetic PENN code to determine the stability of high performance tokamak discharges in the presence of energetic particles. A large plasma pressure and a weak magnetic shear in the core give rise to radially extended kinetic AEs, which are stabilized by the high shear at the edge of a divertor (X point) configuration. Large values for the safety factor and the ion Larmor radius in reversed shear operation may however trigger drift kinetic Alfven eigenmode instabilities that could affect the alpha particle confinement in a reactor.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the frame of the Biomass mission activities, this paper presents the challenges and recent results in the retrieval of forest biomass from polarimetric (PolSAR) and interferometric (PolInSAR) P-band SAR data. During the mission Phase A, critical issues in the biomass retrieval algorithms in boreal and tropical forests have been identified and addressed. In boreal forest, multi polarization backscatter data can be used to mitigate much of the variability due to environment effects. In high biomass tropical forest, because of the low sensitivity of the backscatter to biomass, appropriate correction methods were developed to mitigate the disturbing effects. Also to enhance the retrieval results, a combination of PolSAR and PolInSAR methods was proposed.

  • An idiosyncratic zonated stroma encapsulates desmoplastic liver metastases and originates from injured liver
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A perimetastatic capsule is a strong positive prognostic factor in liver metastases, but its origin remains unclear. Here, we systematically quantify the capsule's extent and cellular composition in 263 patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases to investigate its clinical significance and origin. We show that survival improves proportionally with increasing encapsulation and decreasing tumor-hepatocyte contact. Immunostaining reveals the gradual zonation of the capsule, transitioning from benign-like NGFR(high) stroma at the liver edge to FAP(high) stroma towards the tumor. Encapsulation correlates with decreased tumor viability and preoperative chemotherapy. In mice, chemotherapy and tumor cell ablation induce capsule formation. Our results suggest that encapsulation develops where tumor invasion into the liver plates stalls, representing a reparative process rather than tumor-induced desmoplasia. We propose a model of metastases growth, where the efficient tumor colonization of the liver parenchyma and a reparative liver injury reaction are opposing determinants of metastasis aggressiveness.
