  • Defining and Analyzing “Resistance”: Possible Entrances to the Study of Subversive Practices
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Alternatives: Global, Local, Political. - THOUSAND OAKS, CA 91320 USA : SAGE Publications. - 0304-3754 .- 2163-3150. ; 41:3, s. 137-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the meaning of “resistance” and suggests a new path for “resistance studies,” which is an emerging and interdisciplinary field of the social sciences that is still relatively fragmented and heterogeneous. Resistance has often been connected with antisocial attitudes, destructiveness, reactionary or revolutionary ideologies, unusual and sudden explosions of violence, and emotional outbursts. However, we wish to add to this conceptualization by arguing that resistance also has the potential to be productive, plural and fluid, and integrated into everyday social life. The first major part of the article is devoted to discuss existing understandings of resistance with the aim of seeking to capture distinctive features and boundaries of this social phenomenon. Among other things, we will explore resistance in relation to other key concepts and related research fields. We then, in the article’s second major part, propose a number of analytical categories and possible entrances aiming at inspire more in-depth studies of resistance.

  • Researching Resistance and Social Change: A Critical Approach to Theory and Practice
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Resistance has often been connected with anti-social attitudes, destructiveness, reactionary or revolutionary ideologies, unusual and sudden explosions of violence and emotional outbursts. This book goes beyond these conventions. Exploring various key questions, ranging from concept definitions of affect and temporality, to complex entanglements of various social dimensions and ethical questions, this accessible guide provides a robust theoretical and methodological framework for researching of resistance and social change. By drawing connections between resistance and politics, between performance and everyday strategies, and between the juridical and its counter-strategies, this book provides students with a transdisciplinary understanding of contemporary debates in this emerging field.

  • Resistance Studies as an Academic Pursuit
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Resistance Studies. - 2001-9947. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Journal of Resistance Studies Number 1 - Volume 3 - 2017 10 Resistance Studies as an Academic Pursuit Baaz 1 , Lilja 2 & Vinthagen 3 ABSTRACT Resistance is both a common and somewhat unusual concept. It appears often in political debates and the media. Members of various non-govern-mental organizations and social movements also frequently use resistance when they refer to their various activities. In spite of the significant growth regarding the use of resistance during recent years, the discussion about the meaning and content of the concept, the ways resistance activities can be understood, as well as their potential impact, et cetera, is still rather divided and under-developed within academia. Hence, in spite of offer-ing a necessary addition to the earlier focus on ‘power’ within the social sciences, the rapidly growing field of resistance studies is still very much in its infancy. This article is an attempt to introduce some of our main ideas on researching resistance in a systematized and structured fashion. One of the main arguments put forward in the article is that what qualifies as resistance is very much dependent on context, as the aim of various resistance practices also varies very much; so, does its different articula-tions as well as the ability of various activities to challenge political, legal, economic, social and cultural structures in society—ultimately to achieve ‘social change’

  • The ABC of resistance: towards a new analytical framework
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two significant developments – (1) the rapidly changing world order, and (2) significant gaps in current social science scholarship – call for a further exploration of resistance theories. In this paper, we identify some of the gaps and inconsistencies within the current bulk of research, and seek to contribute to the understanding of resistance, its applications and complexity. In short, this paper discusses three interacting and supporting forms of resistance, including various overlaps and interlinkages between them, which together constitute what we would like to call the ABC of resistance; that is, avoidance resistance, breaking resistance, and constructive resistance.

  • Resisting resettlement in Rwanda: rethinking dichotomies of “survival”/“resistance” and “dominance”/“subordination”
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Eastern African Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-1055 .- 1753-1063. ; 11:4, s. 734-750
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article problematizes the dichotomies between “survival” and “resistance,” and between “dominance” and “subordination.” Based on fieldwork in Rwanda among peasants who experienced the country’s large-scale villagization program, the article shows how some poor farmers – motivated by survival needs – negotiate the reform pressures in a way that amounts to “everyday resistance,” while the local reform implementers – as a result of their “in-between position” as leaders and members of the local communities – navigate between resistance and dominance in ambivalent ways. In this way, our empirical data contribute to the field of resistance studies, particularly to explorations of “everyday resistance,” by (1) questioning the conventional focus on the political consciousness (or “class antagonism”) of subalterns, as well as (2) destabilizing the binary class model of dominant superiors and resisting subalterns.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 8:1, s. 109-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article applies our earlier proposed theoretical framework on everyday resistance in the case of Palestinian Sumūd (steadfastness) in relation to the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories and the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Our original framework rests on the dimensions of: (I) repertoires of everyday resistance; (II) relationships of agents; as well as the (III) spatialization and (IV) temporalization of everyday resistance. The already existing complex theoretical debates as well as the rich body of empirical work regarding the Israel/Palestine conflict give us an opportunity to illustrate and explore the possibilities as well as the limits of the proposed framework. Our hope is that in this way, we encourage more systematic research on and a more nuanced understanding of everyday resistance.

  • Dimensions of Everyday Resistance: An Analytical Framework
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Critical Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0896-9205 .- 1569-1632. ; 42:3, s. 417-435
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since James Scott introduced the concept of everyday resistance' in 1985, research has grown within partly overlapping fields. Existing studies utilize very different definitions, methodologies and understandings of everyday resistance', which makes a systematic development of the field difficult. In previous work, the authors have suggested a theoretical and definitional framework where everyday resistance is understood as a specific kind of resistance that is done routinely yet is not publicly articulated with political claims or formally organized. A more comprehensive and systematic exploration of this challenging phenomenon is possible through an analysis where: repertoires of everyday resistance are taken into account, together with relations between actors, as well as the spatialization and temporalization of resistance. These analytical dimensions are explained and motivated through illustrations from existing research. Finally, it is argued all four dimensions need to be studied in intersections.

  • The visible effects of 'invisible politics': 'everyday forms of resistance' and possible outcomes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 13:3, s. 418-438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We evaluate existing case studies of 'everyday forms of resistance' and explore the possibilities for a systematic research on its political impacts. Due to its elusive nature, the impact of this less visible resistance has rarely been studied. We only find single case studies that make references to varied outcomes in a particular context. Main theorists within the field do suggest a loose hypothesis of 'cumulative' effects in which (thousands of) individual acts can have a significant impact over time, with triggered mobilization of 'scale shifts' into public mass actions. Our exploration points to a potential for establishing knowledge of immediate outcomes, particularly through comparative case studies.

  • Beyond “Individual” or “Collective” Resistance: A Critical Assessment towards an Agenda for Future Research on Dissent
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Resistance Studies. - 2001-9947. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We argue that studies of resistance have suffered from a bifurcation of fields, whereby some focus on organized forms (social movements, civil society or revolutions), while others are concerned with individual types (everyday, local and dispersed) of resistance. This de facto academic division has unwittingly obscured the links, dynamics, hybridity and entanglements between different forms of resistance. In order to stimulate a more complex and nuanced understanding of resistance, we propose a new research agenda for transdisciplinary studies of resistance and present some connections between individual and more collective/organized forms of resistance that need to be systematically explored in future research. Overall, this article argues for the need to recognize both the variation in forms of resistance, and the (often hybrid) linkages between them. The recognition that individual acts of resistance are fundamentally entangled with collective or organized dissent is necessary for shifting our understanding of resistance.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 11:2, s. 211-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACT Revisiting James C. Scott’s classification of forms of resistance, this paper argues that (hidden, subtle) everyday resistance is only one of many types of small-scale or individual resistance practices. We propose the concept of ‘dispersed resistance’, which might be ‘everyday’ and subtle, or loud and extraordinary. In addition, draw- ing on Foucault’s works, we suggest at least two ways of concep- tualizing dispersed resistance: as ‘productive’ resistance (related to disciplinary power and biopower) and ‘counter-repressive’ resis- tance (related to repressive and sovereign power). Finally, since power-relations are often composed by an assemblage of repres- sion, discipline and biopower, resistance practices assemble too.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 6:2, s. 201-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article will examine irrationality in relation to the concept of resistance. Is there such a thing as an irrational resistance? While one tendency has been to irrationalise the ‘other’ and their resistance in order to construct a subaltern identity position, within the social sciences, an opposing tendency can also be identified; there is a trend to try to rationalise what seems to be people’s irrational behaviours. In this article, however, we will take a different stance by arguing that resistance is generally both irrational and rational depending on its relation to power.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Identity: Representation & Practices - Lisbon, 11-12 September, 2014 Faculty of Humanities – University of Lisbon, Portugal.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper aims to add to the discussion on ‘civil society’, resistance and environmental politics by departing from the concepts of affects, time and temporality. In essence, the paper suggests two things. Firstly, when theorizing civil society, we argue that we should depart from the idea that the present is not a singular, linear moment, but comprises affective relations to other times and peoples situated within them. By this, we will show how the ‘doing’ of various civil societies is performed in relation to people of the past as well as the future—that is, how late or unborn bodies of the past and the future, respectively, contribute to create the present in an alternative way. Secondly, we will display how civil society actors are carrying out various forms of resistance against global warming by suggesting multiple temporalities, which are operating simultaneously. By reviewing interviews with local representatives of the environmental movement in Tokyo, the promotion of another temporality prevails as a form of resistance or as a means to resist, in order to negotiating current discourses and future prospects. To further understand this embracing of time, the paper is inspired by affective theory and takes temporality in queer studies as starting point to display different strategies of resistance. Overall, the paper highlights the importance of adding the affects/time nexus to the analysis of national and transnational civil societies.

  • How resistance encourages resistance: theorizing the nexus between power, 'Organised Resistance' and 'Everyday Resistance'
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 10:1, s. 40-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lately, the concept of 'resistance' has gained considerable traction as a tool for critically exploring subaltern practices in relation to power. Few researchers, however, have elaborated on the inter-linkage of shifting forms of resistance; and above all, how acts of everyday resistance entangle with more organized and sometimes mass-based resistance activities. In this paper, these entanglements are analysed by taking into consideration the connections between articulations of resistance and technologies of power. Empirical observations from Cambodia are theorized in order to provide better theoretical tools for searching and investigating the inter-linkage between different resistance forms that contribute to social change. In addition, it is argued that modalities of power and its related resistance must be understood, or theorized, in relation to the concepts of 'agency', 'selfreflexivity' and 'techniques of the self'.

    • [About the book:] This is an important historical period in which to develop communication models aimed at creating opportunities for citizens to find a voice for new experiences and social concerns. Such basic social problems as inequality, poverty, and discrimination pose a constant challenge to policies that serve the health and income needs of children, families, people with disabilities, and the elderly. Important changes both in individual values and civic life are occurring in the United States and in many other nations. Recent trends such as the globalization of commerce and consumer values, the speed and personalization of communication technologies, and an economic realignment of industrial and information-based economies are often regarded as negative. Yet there are many signs --from the WTO experience in Seattle to the rise of global activism aimed at making biotechnology accountable --that new forms of citizenship, politics, and public engagement are emerging. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Activism and Social Justice presents a comprehensive overview of the field with topics of varying dimensions, breadth, and length. The Encyclopedia is designed for readers to understand the topics, concepts, and ideas which motivate and shape the fields of activism, civil engagement, and social justice as well as short biographies of the major thinkers and leaders who have influenced and continue to influence the study of activism. This 3 volume encyclopedia will be multidisciplinary in appeal: education; communication studies; political science; leadership studies; social work; social welfare; environmental studies; health care; social psychology; sociology; etc.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Political Power. - 2158-379X .- 2158-3803. ; 7:1, s. 107-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article outlines a framework of a possible understanding of Foucault and resistance, by linking Foucauldian power forms with its corresponding resistance. If resistance is a reaction to power, then the characteristics of the power strategy/relation affect the kinds of resistance that subsequently prevail. And if resistance is a response and thereby shaped by relations of power, it becomes interesting to discuss what kinds of resistance are linked to or emanate from what kinds of power. We discuss this relationship between power and resistance by drawing on three different power forms as outlined by Foucault: (I) sovereign power; (II) disciplinary power; and (III) biopower. Departing from these forms of power, we discuss how different power techniques need to serve as the corresponding reference point for possible resistance techniques, where the peculiarities of power decide how resistance can be conducted.

  • A call for a nonviolent strategy of the global peace & justice movement
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: War Resisters International (website).
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We live in a historical time of social change. While the economy, state regimes and wars are being globalized, the social forces of people's movements are as well. At least 15 millions demonstrated worldwide against the war in Iraq 2003. The gathering of "the global movement of movements" at the World Social Forum continues to grow, the latest in Brazil with 150 000 participants. This global peace & justice movement has drawn the conclusions of earlier strategies of reform through national parties and elections and revolution through armed rebellion, and is searching for a nonviolent strategy of social change. We need to explore how to bring the knowledge and experience of the more than one century old nonviolent resistance tradition into the present global movement. War Resisters' International is calling for a mobilization of nonviolent activists, trainers, organizers and scholars in order to build a long term plan. A major occasion to discuss this is the international conference "Globalising Nonviolence" in Germany, July 2006

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the Swedish conference on development research "Fattiga och rika", Lund University.

    • This paper present an alternative approach in the discourse of nonviolent action, dominated by the sociologist Gene Sharp (1973) and the “technique approach” which emphasise the law-guided effectiveness of various universal methodological principles (McCarthy, Ackerman & Kruegler). In nonviolent action studies movement organisations which use non-armed forms of struggle in order to effect social change is the object of exploration. It is an interdisciplinary field of academics, consisting of researchers from sociology, international relations, state politics, feminism, peace research etc. Instead of focusing on the ideals or argumentative logic of nonviolence like the literature before 1973 – and instead of focusing on showing the strategic effectiveness of possible nonviolent struggle techniques like Sharp et al; a social constructivist approach would focus on the construction of nonviolent resistance as a complex and dynamic social process of interaction (Vinthagen & Chabot 2002. McAdam, Tarrow, and Tilly 2001).

  • Ickevåldsaktion: en social praktik av motstånd och konstruktion : Nonviolent Action - A Social Practice of Resistance and Construction
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This research project is a conceptual exploration of a specific social phenomenon - nonviolent action. Within the discipline of peace and development studies the dissertation explores how peace with peaceful means is possible to conceptualize. Earlier theories about nonviolence (mainly Gandhi and Sharp) are discussed in the perspective of late modern sociology (Bourdieu, Foucault, Goffman, Habermas et al) in an attempt to develop a social and practical description system. The concept of nonviolence combines 'without-violence' and 'against-violence', differing from the better known concepts of 'peaceful' or 'pacifism'. Contrary to earlier research, nonviolence is described as a multidimensional rationality and contradictory action repertoire transforming conflicts through dialectical creativity. Nonviolence seeks consensus between parties - it is argued - even in conflicts plagued by power relations, enemy images, institutionalised violence, competing truth claims, dysfunctional social relations and cultural differences of groups. The repertoire of nonviolence is a combination of resistance and construction, expressed through dialogue facilitation, normative regulation, power breaking and utopian enactment. Nonviolent action's overriding goal is to facilitate consensus and common universal truth (Satyagraha). Contrary to earlier research this study highlights truth-regimes, power production, manipulation and other inherent contradictions of nonviolence, while maintaining the possibility of liberation struggles against organised violence and oppression. Based on a resulting apparatus of social concepts (summarised in conceptual maps) a number of possible research options and development alternatives of nonviolent practices are suggested. Taken together they point towards the possibilities of a relational, constructivist and pragmatic school of nonviolence studies and an increased potential of peaceful change in difficult conflicts and oppression systems.
