  • Nuclear astrophysics with radioactive ions at FAIR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

  • Influence of multiple sources on the two-neutron correlation function in Ni-induced, intermediate energy, heavy ion reactions
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 64:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The strength of the neutron-neutron correlation function from the E=45AMeV58Ni+27Al, natNi, and 197Au reactions depends on the neutron parallel velocity. This indicates the presence of multiple sources of neutron emission. We find these sources consistent with a dissipative, binary reaction mechanism as it is described by, e.g., Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck calculations.

  • Response to discussion by Ertsen on Westerberg et al. “Perceptual models of uncertainty for socio-hydrological systems".
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Hydrological Sciences Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0262-6667 .- 2150-3435. ; :63, s. 13–14-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ertsen discusses the representation of reality and uncertainty in our paper, raising three critical points. In response to the first, we agree that discussion of different interpretations of the concept of uncertainty is important when developing perceptual models – making different uncertainty interpretations explicit was a key motivation behind our method. Secondly, we do not, as Ertsen suggests, deny anyone who is not a “certified” scientist to have relevant knowledge. The elicitation of diverse views by discussing perceptual models is a basis for open discussion and decision making. Thirdly, Ertsen suggests that it is not useful to treat socio-hydrological systems as if they exist. We argue that we act as “pragmatic realists” in most practical applications by treating socio-hydrological systems as an external reality that can be known. But the uncertainty that arises from our knowledge limitations needs to be recognized, as it may impact on practical decision making and associated costs.

  • Fluid flow through porous media with dual scale porosity
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 19th International Symposium on Transport Phenomena (ISTP-19). - : University of Iceland, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flow in two scale porous media takes place in applications such as advanced composites manufacturing. Knowledge of this flow is of general importance and is crucial for filtration mechanisms when functional filler-particles are added to the liquid resin impregnating the fibrous preform. Means to model and experimentally visualise this flow is here investigated. In particular simulations performed with computational fluid dynamics and the boundary element method are compared to micro particle image velocimetry in a model geometry.

  • A chromosome-level assembly of the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus genome with annotation of its repetitive elements
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: G3. - : Oxford University Press. - 2160-1836. ; 14:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Callosobruchus maculatus is a major agricultural pest of legume crops worldwide and an established model system in ecology and evolution. Yet, current molecular biological resources for this species are limited. Here, we employ Hi-C sequencing to generate a greatly improved genome assembly and we annotate its repetitive elements in a dedicated in-depth effort where we manually curate and classify the most abundant unclassified repeat subfamilies. We present a scaffolded chromosome-level assembly, which is 1.01 Gb in total length with 86% being contained within the 9 autosomes and the X chromosome. Repetitive sequences accounted for 70% of the total assembly. DNA transposons covered 18% of the genome, with the most abundant superfamily being Tc1-Mariner (9.75% of the genome). This new chromosome-level genome assembly of C. maculatus will enable future genetic and evolutionary studies not only of this important species but of beetles more generally.

  • Phosphorylation of WASp is a key regulator of activity and stability in vivo
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 1091-6490. ; 106:37, s. 15738-15743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASp) is a key cytoskeletal regulator in hematopoietic cells. Covalent modification of a conserved tyrosine by phosphorylation has emerged as an important potential determinant of activity, although the physiological significance remains uncertain. In a murine knockin model, mutation resulting in inability to phosphorylate Y293 (Y293F) mimicked many features of complete WASp-deficiency. Although a phosphomimicking mutant Y293E conferred enhanced actin-polymerization, the cellular phenotype was similar due to functional dysregulation. Furthermore, steady-state levels of Y293E-WASp were markedly reduced compared to wild-type WASp and Y293F-WASp, although partially recoverable by treatment of cells with proteasome inhibitors. Consequently, tyrosine phosphorylation plays a critical role in normal activation of WASp in vivo, and is indispensible for multiple tasks including proliferation, phagocytosis, chemotaxis, and assembly of adhesion structures. Furthermore, it may target WASp for proteasome-mediated degradation, thereby providing a default mechanism for self-limiting stimulation of the Arp2/3 complex.

  • Twenty-three unsolved problems in hydrology (UPH) - a community perspective
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Hydrological Sciences Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0262-6667 .- 2150-3435. ; 64:10, s. 1141-1158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by a need for stronger harmonisation of research efforts. The procedure involved a public consultation through online media, followed by two workshops through which a large number of potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite of the diversity of the participants (230 scientists in total), the process revealed much about community priorities and the state of our science: a preference for continuity in research questions rather than radical departures or redirections from past and current work. Questions remain focused on the process-based understanding of hydrological variability and causality at all space and time scales. Increased attention to environmental change drives a new emphasis on understanding how change propagates across interfaces within the hydrological system and across disciplinary boundaries. In particular, the expansion of the human footprint raises a new set of questions related to human interactions with nature and water cycle feedbacks in the context of complex water management problems. We hope that this reflection and synthesis of the 23 unsolved problems in hydrology will help guide research efforts for some years to come.

  • CHICSi - a compact ultra-high vacuum compatible detector system for nuclear reaction experiments at storage rings. III. readout system
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 516:2-3, s. 327-347
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (CHICSi) Celsius Heavy Ion Collaboration Si detector system is a high granularity, modular detector telescope array for operation around the cluster-jet target/circulating beam intersection of the CELSIUS storage ring at the The. Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden. It is able to provide identity and momentum vector of up to 100 charged particles and fragments from proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies, 50-1000A MeV. All detector telescopes as well as the major part of electronic readout system are placed inside the target chamber in ultra-high vacuum (UHV, 10(-9)-10(-7) Pa). This requires Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) microchip for the spectroscopic signal processing and the generation and transport of digital control signals. Eighteen telescopes, read out with chip-on-board technique by ceramics Mother Boards (MB) and corresponding 18 microchips are mounted on a 450 x 45 mm(2) Grand Mother Board (GMB), processed on FR4 glass-fibre material. Each of these 28 GMB units contains a daisy-chain organisation of the VLSI chips and associated protection circuits. Analogue-to-digital conversion of the spectroscopic signals is performed on a board outside the chamber which is connected on one side to a power distribution board, directly attached to a UHV mounting flange, and on the other side to the VME-based data acquisition system (CHICSiDAQ). This in its turn is connected via a fibre-optic link to the general TSL acquisition system (SVEDAQ), and in this way data from auxiliary detector systems, read out in CAMAC mode, can be stored in coincidence with CHICSi data.

  • Positron emission tomography with 11C-D-deprenyl in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Evaluation of knee joint inflammation before and after intra-articular glucocorticoid treatment
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology. - 0300-9742 .- 1502-7732. ; 26:1, s. 43-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seven patients with arthritic disease and with clinical signs of inflammation of the knee joint, were investigated with positron emission tomography (PET) after injection of [N-methyl-11C]-D-deprenyl. Two healthy volunteers were included as controls. In five patients the investigation was repeated after an intra-articular injection of glucocorticoids. All patients showed very high uptake of the tracer in the paraarticular structures of the joint. After treatment there was approximately a 50% reduction of the uptake in the treated knees, both in the high uptake regions and in the surrounding soft tissues. No change was observed in the non-treated knees. In the healthy volunteers, only soft tissue surrounding the joint showed an uptake of the tracer, but at a magnitude which was 6-8 times lower than the high uptake regions in the arthritis patients. Although the mechanisms for the high uptake of 11C-D-deprenyl in affected joints of patients with arthritis is not clear, the present work points to a potential of PET for the assessment of disease intensity and monitoring of treatment.

  • Intraperitoneal influx of neutrophils in response to IL-33 is mast cell-dependent
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 0006-4971 .- 1528-0020. ; 121:3, s. 530-536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IL-33 is a recently discovered cytokine involved in induction of Th2 responses and functions as an alarmin. Despite numerous recent studies targeting IL-33, its role in vivo is incompletely understood. Here we investigated inflammatory responses to intraperitoneal IL-33 injections in wild-type and mast cell–deficient mice. We found that wild-type mice, but not mast cell–deficient Wsh/Wsh mice, respond to IL-33 treatment with neutrophil infiltration to the peritoneum, whereas other investigated cell types remained unchanged. In Wsh/Wsh mice, the IL-33–induced innate neutrophil response could be rescued by local reconstitution with wild-type but not with T1/ST2−/− mast cells, demonstrating a mast cell–dependent mechanism. Furthermore, we found this mechanism to be partially dependent on mast cell–derived TNF, as we observed reduced neutrophil infiltration in Wsh/Wsh mice reconstituted with TNF−/− bone marrow–derived mast cells compared with those reconstituted with wild-type bone marrow–derived mast cells. In agreement with our in vivo findings, we demonstrate that humanneutrophils migrate toward the supernatant of IL-33–treated human mast cells. Taken together, our findings reveal that IL-33 activates mast cells in vivo to recruit neutrophils, a mechanism dependent on IL-33R expression on peritoneal mast cells. Mast cells activated in vivo by IL-33 probably play an important role in inflammatory reactions.

  • Exposure of volunteers to microgravity by dry immersion bed over 21 days results in gene expression changes and adaptation of T cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - 2375-2548. ; 9:34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The next steps of deep space exploration are manned missions to Moon and Mars. For safe space missions for crew members, it is important to understand the impact of space flight on the immune system. We studied the effects of 21 days dry immersion (DI) exposure on the transcriptomes of T cells isolated from blood samples of eight healthy volunteers. Samples were collected 7 days before DI, at day 7, 14, and 21 during DI, and 7 days after DI. RNA sequencing of CD3(+) T cells revealed transcriptional alterations across all time points, with most changes occurring 14 days after DI exposure. At day 21, T cells showed evidence of adaptation with a transcriptional profile resembling that of 7 days before DI. At 7 days after DI, T cells again changed their transcriptional profile. These data suggest that T cells adapt by rewiring their transcriptomes in response to simulated weightlessness and that remodeling cues persist when reexposed to normal gravity.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 516:2-3, s. 492-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the details of an experiment on light particle interferometry. In particular, we focus on a time-of-flight technique which uses a cyclotron RF signal as a start and a liquid scintillator time signal as a stop, to measure neutron energy in the range of En approximate to 1.8-150 MeV. This dynamic range (up to 300 ns) is much larger than the beam bunch separation (54 ns) of the AGOR cyclotron (KVI). However, the problem of a short burst period is overcome by using the time information obtained from a fast projectile fragment phoswich detector. The complete analysis procedure to extract the final neutron kinetic energy spectra, is discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Isospin effects on two-particle correlation functions in E/A=61 MeV Ar-36+Sn-112,Sn-124 reactions
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 69:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-angle, two-particle correlation functions have been measured for Ar-36+Sn-112,Sn-124 collisions at E/A=61 MeV. Total momentum gated neutron-proton (np) and proton-proton (pp) correlations are stronger for the Sn-124 target. Some of the correlation functions for particle pairs involving deuterons or tritons (nd, pt, and nt) also show a dependence on the isospin of the emitting source.

    • The very first data from MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden on pion photoproduction at threshold energies are presented. The decrease of the total π+ yield in γ+12C, 27Al reactions below 200 MeV as well as the dσ/dΩ cross-section data essentially follow the predictions of an intranuclear-cascade model with an attractive potential for the pion–nucleus interaction. However, View the MathML source, cross-section data at 176 MeV show deviations which call for refinements of the model and possibly also for the inclusion of coherent pion-production mechanisms.

  • Assessment of in vivo mast cell reactivity in patients with systemic mastocytosis.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Allergy. - : Wiley. - 0954-7894 .- 1365-2222. ; 47:7, s. 909-917
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Patients with systemic mastocytosis (SM) have clinical signs of mast cell (MC) activation and increased levels of MC mediators. It is unclear whether the increased mediator levels are caused by increased numbers of tissue MCs, or whether these cells in affected individuals have a hyperactive phenotype.OBJECTIVE: To determine reactivity of the skin and the airways to directly acting mediators and indirectly acting mast cell secretagogues in subjects with SM.METHODS: were measured, as well as ex vivo basophil histamine release.RESULTS: Mast cell mediators in the blood and urine were significantly higher in patients with SM than in HC and A controls. Responsiveness to local activation of skin MCs (by morphine) and airway MCs (by mannitol) was similar in SM and HC groups. Likewise, end-organ responsiveness in the skin to histamine, and in the airways to methacholine, was similar in all three subject groups. There was no evidence of increased basophil reactivity in SM patients.CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mast cells in the skin and airways of subjects with SM do not exhibit hyper-reactivity towards the MC-activating stimuli morphine and mannitol, respectively. Therefore, the highly elevated baseline levels of MC mediators in SM are most likely due to increased MC numbers, rather than altered MC responsiveness. The underlying mechanisms could involve leakage of MC mediators, or dysfunctions in mediator synthesis, storage and release. One clinical implication of our study is that there is no contraindication to perform skin tests using morphine in subjects with mastocytosis.
