  • Anomalous photoluminescence in InP1-xBix
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322 .- 2045-2322. ; 6, s. Art. no. 27867-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Low temperature photoluminescence (PL) from InP1-xBix thin films with Bi concentrations in the 0-2.49% range reveals anomalous spectral features with strong and very broad (linewidth of 700 nm) PL signals compared to other bismide alloys. Multiple transitions are observed and their energy levels are found much smaller than the band-gap measured from absorption measurements. These transitions are related to deep levels confirmed by deep level transient spectroscopy, which effectively trap free holes and enhance radiative recombination. The broad luminescence feature is beneficial for making super-luminescence diodes, which can theoretically enhance spatial resolution beyond 1 ?m in optical coherent tomography (OCT).

  • Genetic Effects of NDUFAF6 rs6982393 and APOE on Alzheimer’s Disease in Chinese Rural Elderly : A Cross-Sectional Population-Based Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Clinical Interventions in Aging. - 1176-9092 .- 1178-1998. ; 17, s. 185-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To investigate the associations of genotypes of NDUFAF6 rs6982393 and APOE and their combined genotypes with the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in Chinese rural elderly. Methods: This cross-sectional population-based study included 5096 older adults (age ≥ 60 years, 57.1% female). Genotypes of NDUFAF6 rs6982393 and APOE were detected using the multiple-polymerase chain reaction amplification. We diagnosed AD following the criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the fourth edition and diagnosed MCI following the Petersen’s criteria MCI. Data were analyzed using the logistic regression model. Results: The overall prevalence of AD and MCI was 3.57% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.040, 0.053) and 22.65% (95% CI: 0.223, 0.247), separately. The TT versus CC/CT genotype of NDUFAF6 rs6982393 was related to a higher risk of AD with the multi-adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) being 1.61 (1.02, 2.54) in the total sample, 3.36 (1.48, 7.60) in those aged 60– 69, and 1.24 (0.71, 2.17) in those aged 70 years and above. The interaction between genotype of NDUFAF6 rs6982393 with age groups (60– 69 versus ≥ 70 years) was significant on the risk of AD. The presence of APOE ϵ4 was not significantly associated with the risk of AD. Carrying both NDUFAF6 TT and APOE ϵ4 was related to a higher risk of AD with the multi-adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) being 2.69 (1.10, 2.56). In addition, there was no significant association between the above genotypes and MCI.Conclusion: In Chinese rural elderly, the TT versus CT/CC genotype of NDUFAF6 rs6982393 was associated with an increased likelihood of AD; such an association only existed among young-old adults. Carrying both NDUFAF6 rs6982393-TT and APOE ϵ4 was related to a higher risk of AD. This finding highlights the importance of considering age and combined genotype in studying the genetic profiles of AD.

  • All Roads Lead to Rome? : Genes Causing Dravet Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome-Like Phenotypes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Neurology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-2295. ; 13
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a severe epileptic encephalopathy mainly caused by haploinsufficiency of the gene SCN1A, which encodes the voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1. 1 in the brain. While SCN1A mutations are known to be the primary cause of DS, other genes that may cause DS are poorly understood. Several genes with pathogenic mutations result in DS or DS-like phenotypes, which may require different drug treatment approaches. Therefore, it is urgent for clinicians, especially epilepsy specialists to fully understand these genes involved in DS in addition to SCN1A. Particularly for healthcare providers, a deep understanding of these pathogenic genes is useful in properly selecting and adjusting drugs in a more effective and timely manner. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify genes other than SCN1A that may also cause DS or DS-like phenotypes. Methods: A comprehensive search of relevant Dravet syndrome and severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy was performed in PubMed, until December 1, 2021. Two independent authors performed the screening for potentially eligible studies. Disagreements were decided by a third, more professional researcher or by all three. The results reported by each study were narratively summarized. Results: A PubMed search yielded 5,064 items, and other sources search 12 records. A total of 29 studies published between 2009 and 2021 met the inclusion criteria. Regarding the included articles, seven studies on PCDH19, three on SCN2A, two on SCN8A, five on SCN1B, two on GABRA1, three on GABRB3, three on GABRG2, and three on STXBP1 were included. Only one study was recorded for CHD2, CPLX1, HCN1 and KCNA2, respectively. It is worth noting that a few articles reported on more than one epilepsy gene. Conclusion: DS is not only identified in variants of SCN1A, but other genes such as PCDH19, SCN2A, SCN8A, SCN1B, GABRA1, GABRB3, GABRG2, KCNA2, CHD2, CPLX1, HCN1A, STXBP1 can also be involved in DS or DS-like phenotypes. As genetic testing becomes more widely available, more genes associated with DS and DS-like phenotypes may be identified and gene-based diagnosis of subtypes of phenotypes in this spectrum may improve the management of these diseases in the future.

  • KIBRA regulates amyloid β metabolism by controlling extracellular vesicles secretion
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: EBioMedicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-3964. ; 78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Previous research has revealed that KIBRA controls secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by inhibiting the proteasomal degradation of Rab27a and EVs play an important role in amyloid β (Aβ) metabolism and transmission during Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Here, we further test the hypothesis that KIBRA regulates Aβ metabolism via the endosomal-lysosomal system. Methods We generated KIBRA knockout mice on a 5XFAD background and KIBRA knockdown cells in murine HT22 cells with stably overexpressing APP. Various forms of Aβ and quantification of EVs were analyzed by biochemical methods and nanoparticle tracking analysis, respectively. Multivesicular bodies (MVBs) were visualized by electron microscopy and confocal fluorescent microscopy. In a population-based cohort (n = 1419), KIBRA genotypes and plasma Aβ levels were analyzed using multiple-PCR amplification and Simoa, respectively.Findings Multiple forms of Aβ were dramatically attenuated in KIBRA knockout mouse brain, including monomers, oligomers, and extracellular deposition, but KIBRA knockout had no effect on intraneuronal APP C-terminal fragment β (APP-CTFβ)/Aβ levels. KIBRA depletion also decreased APP-CTFβ/Aβ-associated EVs secretion and subsequently enhanced MVBs number. Furthermore, we found that excessive accumulation of MVBs harboring APP-CTFβ/Aβ promoted the MVBs-lysosome fusion for degradation and inhibition of lysosomal function rescued secretion of APP-CTFβ/Aβ-associated EVs. More importantly, whole exon sequencing of KIBRA in a large population-based cohort identified the association of KIBRA rs28421695 polymorphism with plasma Aβ levels.Interpretation These results demonstrate that KIBRA regulates Aβ metabolism via controlling the secretion of APP-CTFβ/Aβ-associated EVs.

  • A comprehensive dataset of luminescence chronologies and environmental proxy indices of loess-paleosol deposits across Asia
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: npj Climate and Atmospheric Science. - : Springer Nature. - 2397-3722. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Loess-paleosol sequences have been used in Asia to study climate and environmental changes during the Quaternary. The scarcity of age control datasets and proxy indices analysis data for Asian loess has limited our understanding of loess depositional processes and the reconstruction of paleoclimatic changes from loess-paleosol records. In this study, we present a dataset that includes 1785 quartz optically stimulated luminescence ages and 1038 K-feldspar post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence ages from 128 loess-paleosol sequences located in different regions of Asia. We generate 38 high-resolution age-depth models of loess records based on the provided datasets. We provide data on 12,365 grain size records, 14,964 magnetic susceptibility records, 2204 CaCO3 content records, and 3326 color reflection records. This dataset contains the most detailed and accurate chronologies and proxy index data for loess records in Asia yet published. It provides fundamental data for understanding the spatial-temporal variations in loess depositional processes and climatic changes across the continent during the mid-late Quaternary.

  • Photoluminescence of InGaAs/GaAsBi/InGaAs type-II quantum wells grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Semiconductor Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6641 .- 0268-1242. ; 32:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • InxGa1-xAs/GaAs1-yBiy/InxGa1-xAs (0.20 ≤x ≤0.22, 0.035 ≤y ≤0.045) quantum wells (QWs) were grown on GaAs substrates by gas source molecular beam epitaxy for realizing the type-II band edge line-up. Both type-I and type-II transitions were observed in the Bi containing W QWs and the photoluminescence intensity was enhanced in the sample with a high Bi content, which is mainly due to the improvement of carrier confinement. The 8 band k • p model was used to analyze the electronic properties in the QWs and the calculated transition energies fit well with the experiment results. Our study shows that the proposed type-II QW is a promising candidate for realizing GaAs-based near infrared light emitting devices near 1.3 μm

  • Molecular beam epitaxy growth of AlAs 1-x Bi x
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Semiconductor Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6641 .- 0268-1242. ; 34:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High quality AlAs 1-x Bi x layers with Bi composition of 3%-10.5% have been successfully grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The Bi incorporation is confirmed by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. For a 400 nm thick AlAsBi layer, the strain relaxation occurs when the Bi composition is larger than 6.5%. Flux ratio is calculated from Knudsen-cell model and Maxwell equation, according to the geometrical relationship of our equipment. The Bi incorporation increases with increasing the As-Al flux ratio as well as the Bi flux. The extrapolation lattice constant of hypothetic zincblende AlBi alloy is about 6.23 Å.

  • Association between anthropometric indicators of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors among adults in Shanghai, China
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : BMC. - 1471-2458. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: To determine the optimal cut-off values and evaluate the associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-height ratio (WHtR) with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Methods: A large-scale cross-sectional survey was conducted among 35,256 adults aged 20-74 years in Shanghai between June 2016 and December 2017. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were conducted to assess the optimal cut-off anthropometric indices of CVD risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and hyperuricemia. Multivariate Logistic regression models were preformed to evaluate the odds ratio of CVD risk factors. Results: The area under the curve (AUC) of WHtR was significantly greater than that of BMI or WC in the prediction of hypertension and diabetes, and AUCs were higher in women than men. The optimal cut-off values of WHtR were approximately 0.51 in both sexes, while the cut-off values of BMI and WC were higher for men compared with women. The optimal cutoff values of BMI and WC varied greatly across different age groups, but the difference in WHtR was relatively slight. Among women, the optimal threshold of anthropometric indices appeared to increase with age for hypertension and diabetes. The odds ratio between anthropometric indices and CVD risk factors were attenuated with age. WHtR had the greatest odds ratio for CVD risk factors among adults under 60 years old except for women with hypertension, while among 60-74 years, BMI yielded the greatest odds ratio in terms of all CVD outcomes except for women with diabetes. Conclusions: WHtR had the best performance for discriminating hypertension and diabetes and potentially be served as a standard screening tool in public health. The associations between three anthropometric indices and CVD risk factors differed by sex and decreased with age. These findings indicated a need to develop age- and gender-specific difference and make effective strategies for primary prevention of CVDs.

  • An attention-based deep learning approach for inertial motion recognition and estimation in human-robot collaboration
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of manufacturing systems. - : Elsevier BV. - 0278-6125 .- 1878-6642. ; 67, s. 97-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In line with a human-centric smart manufacturing vision, human-robot collaboration is striving to combine robots' high efficiency and quality with humans' rapid adaptability and high flexibility. In particular, perception, recognition and estimation of human motion determine when and what robot to collaborate with humans. This work presents an attention-based deep learning approach for inertial motion recognition and estimation in order to infer when robotic assistance will be requested by the human and to allow the robot to perform partial human tasks. First, in the stage of motion perception and recognition, quaternion-based calibration and forward kinematic analysis methods enable the reconstruction of human motion based on data streaming from an inertial motion capture device. Then, in the stage of motion estimation, residual module and Bidirectional Long ShortTerm Memory module are integrated with proposed attention mechanism for estimating arm motion trajectories further. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in achieving better recognition and estimation in comparison with traditional approaches and existing deep learning approaches. It is experimentally verified in a laboratory environment involving a collaborative robot employed in a small part assembly task.

  • Bidirectional Mendelian Randomisation Analysis Provides Evidence for the Causal Involvement of Dysregulation of CXCL9, CCL11 and CASP8 in the Pathogenesis of Ulcerative Colitis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Crohn's & Colitis. - : Oxford University Press. - 1873-9946 .- 1876-4479. ; 17:5, s. 777-785
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aims Systemic inflammation is well recognised to be associated with ulcerative colitis [UC], but whether these effects are causal or consequential remains unclear. We aimed to define potential causal relationship of cytokine dysregulation with different tiers of evidence. Methods We first synthesised serum proteomic profiling data from two multicentred observational studies, in which a panel of systemic inflammatory proteins was analysed to examine their associations with UC risk. To further dissect observed associations, we then performed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomisation [TSMR] analysis from both forward and reverse directions using five genome-wide association study [GWAS] summary level data for serum proteomic profiles and the largest GWAS of 28 738 European-ancestry individuals for UC risk. Results Pooled analysis of serum proteomic data identified 14 proteins to be associated with the risk of UC. Forward MR analysis using only cis-acting protein quantitative trait loci [cis-pQTLs] or trans-pQTLs further validated causal associations of two chemokines and the increased risk of UC: C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 9 [CXCL9] [OR 1.45, 95% CI 1.08, 1.95, p = 0.012] and C-C motif chemokine ligand 11 [CCL11] [OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.09, 1.18, p = 3.89 x 10(-10)]. Using both cis- and trans-acting pQTLs, an association of caspase-8 [CASP8] [OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.03, 1.05, p = 7.63 x 10(-19)] was additionally identified. Reverse MR did not find any influence of genetic predisposition to UC on any of these three inflammation proteins. Conclusion Pre-existing elevated levels of CXCL9, CCL11 and CASP8 may play a role in the pathogenesis of UC.

  • Bi-Induced Electron Concentration Enhancement Being Responsible for Photoluminescence Blueshift and Broadening in InAs Films
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi (B): Basic Research. - : Wiley. - 1521-3951 .- 0370-1972. ; 256:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoluminescence (PL) study is conducted on InAs films molecular beam epitaxially grown on GaAs substrates with different Bi flux levels. A PL peak blueshift accompanied by linewidth broadening is found with the increase of Bi/As flux ratio, in contrast to the common Bi isoelectronic incorporation or surfactant effect. It is, with detailed lineshape analysis and the evidence of PL peak splitting in a magnetic filed, attributed to the electron concentration enhancement induced by Bi flux. The electron concentration in InAs film is evaluated, which is about 5-fold enhanced as Bi/As flux ratio rises up from 0 to 1x10(-3). The temperature dependence of the PL spectrum indicates that the carrier redistribution augments while the carrier-phonon Frohlich scattering weakens in InAs films with high Bi/As flux ratios. These findings reveal a novel Bi effect of electron concentration enhancement, and contribute to the basic knowledge of Bi in III-V semiconductors.

  • Ingår i: Separation and Purification Technology. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 1383-5866 .- 1873-3794. ; 329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing novel sorbents is essential for biogas upgrading. In this study, mixed sorbents of aqueous porous carbons were developed to separate CO2 from the biogas, where the porous carbon with the developed micropore structure was identified as the most desirable constituent. Both thermodynamics and kinetics were studied experimentally, and Henry’s constant (KH) and the liquid-side mass-transfer coefficient (kL) of CO2 in the mixed sorbent as well as the selectivity of CO2/CH4 were obtained accordingly. Furthermore, the CO2 separation performance was evaluated with a proposed index, and the cost of biogas upgrading using the mixed sorbent was estimated and compared. The results showed that the porous carbon with the developed micropore structure led to better performance on KH and kL of CO2 in the mixed sorbent, and the mixed sorbent with 3.03 wt% porous carbon exhibited the best CO2 separation performance, reducing 36.2 % in cost compared to the current technologies.

  • Associations of Blood Absolute Neutrophil Count and Cytokines With Cognitive Function in Dementia-Free Participants : A Population-Based Cohort Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The journals of gerontology. Series A, Biological sciences and medical sciences. - 1079-5006 .- 1758-535X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The relationships of neutrophils and cytokines with cognitive dysfunction are poorly defined. We aimed to investigate the association of peripheral blood absolute neutrophil count (ANC) with cognitive function in older adults and to further explore the mediating role of serum cytokines in this association. Methods: This population-based cohort study included 1 666 dementia-free participants (age ≥60 years) derived from baseline examinations (March–September 2018) of the Multimodal Intervention to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China (MIND-China); of these, 1 087 participants completed follow-up examinations in October–December 2019. We used a neuropsychological test battery to assess episodic memory, verbal fluency, attention, and executive function at the baseline and follow-up examinations. We used Mindray BC-6800 automated hematology analyzer to measure ANC and Meso Scale Discovery to measure serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and eotaxin-3.Results: The linear regression analysis of cross-sectional data at baseline (n = 1 666) suggested that increased ANC was significantly associated with a lower episodic memory z score (β coefficient: −0.149, 95% CI: −0.274 to −0.023) and lower long-delayed free recall z score (−0.216, −0.361 to −0.070). Serum IL-6 and eotaxin-3 could mediate 16.16% to 20.21% and 7.55% to 9.35%, respectively, of these associations. The analysis of longitudinal data (n = 1 087) showed a J-shaped relationship of ANC with decline in episodic memory z score (p for nonlinear = .049), and a U-shaped relationship between ANC and decline in long-delayed free recall z score (p for nonlinear = .043).Conclusions: Increased neutrophils are associated with poor cognitive performance and accelerated decline in episodic memory, and the cross-sectional association is partly mediated by serum cytokines.

  • Alterations of Elastic Property of Spastic Muscle With Its Joint Resistance Evaluated From Shear Wave Elastography and Biomechanical Model
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Neurology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-2295. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to quantify passive muscle stiffness of spastic wrist flexors in stroke survivors using shear wave elastography (SWE) and to correlate with neural and non-neural contributors estimated from a biomechanical model to hyper-resistance measured during passive wrist extension. Fifteen hemiplegic individuals after stroke with Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) score larger than one were recruited. SWE were used to measure Young's modulus of flexor carpi radialis muscle with joint from 0 degrees (at rest) to 50 degrees flexion (passive stretch condition), with 10 degrees interval. The neural (NC) and non-neural components i.e., elasticity component (EC) and viscosity component (VC) of the wrist joint were analyzed from a motorized mechanical device NeuroFlexor (R) (NF). Combining with a validated biomechanical model, the neural reflex and muscle stiffness contribution to the increased resistance can be estimated. MAS and Fugl-Meyer upper limb score were also measured to evaluate the spasticity and motor function of paretic upper limb. Young's modulus was significantly higher in the paretic side of flexor carpi radialis than that of the non-paretic side (p < 0.001) and it increased significantly from 0 degrees to 50 degrees of the paretic side (p < 0.001). NC, EC, and VC on the paretic side were higher than the non-paretic side (p < 0.05). There was moderate significant positive correlation between the Young's Modulus and EC (r = 0.565, p = 0.028) and VC (r = 0.645, p = 0.009) of the paretic forearm flexor muscle. Fugl-Meyer of the paretic forearm flexor has a moderate significant negative correlation with NC (r = -0.578, p = 0.024). No significant correlation between MAS and shear elastic modulus or NF components was observed. This study demonstrated the feasibility of combining SWE and NF as a non-invasive approach to assess spasticity of paretic muscle and joint in stroke clinics. The neural and non-neural components analysis as well as correlation findings of muscle stiffness of SWE might provide understanding of mechanism behind the neuromuscular alterations in stroke survivors and facilitate the design of suitable intervention for them.

  • Association and interaction of TOMM40 and PVRL2 with plasma amyloid-β and Alzheimer's disease among Chinese older adults : a population-based study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Neurobiology of Aging. - : Elsevier BV. - 0197-4580 .- 1558-1497. ; 113, s. 143-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic studies have identified Alzheimer's disease (AD)-associated SNPs in TOMM40 and PVRL2 genes, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. We examined their associations and interactions with AD risk and plasma biomarkers among Chinese older adults. This population-based study included 4876 participants. TOMM40(rs2075650) and PVRL2(rs6859) polymorphisms were detected using multiple-polymerase chain reaction amplification. Plasma Aβ40, Aβ42, and t-tau concentrations were measured using SIMOA in a subsample (n = 1257). AD was diagnosed following the international criteria. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic and general linear models. AD was diagnosed in 182 participants. The multiadjusted odds ratio of AD was 6.24 (95% CI 1.73–22.48) for TOMM40GG, 1.47 (0.89–2.42) for PVRL2AA, and 12.87 (3.97–41.73) for having both risk alleles (Pinteraction = 0.0003). Among APOEε3/ε3 carriers, the multiadjusted odds ratio of AD associated with TOMM40AG was 2.90(1.15–7.31). In biomarker subsample, TOMM40GG was significantly associated with lower plasma Aβ42 and the Aβ42-to-Aβ40 ratio (p < 0.05). TOMM40 genotype is differentially associated with AD risk depending on APOE genotype. TOMM40 and PVRL2 genes could interact to substantially increase AD risk, possibly through influencing Aβ metabolism.

  • Exosomal miR-532-5p induced by long-term exercise rescues blood–brain barrier function in 5XFAD mice via downregulation of EPHA4
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Aging Cell. - : Wiley. - 1474-9718 .- 1474-9726. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The breakdown of the blood–brain barrier, which develops early in Alzheimer's disease (AD), contributes to cognitive impairment. Exercise not only reduces the risk factors for AD but also confers direct protection against cognitive decline. However, the exact molecular mechanisms remain elusive, particularly whether exercise can liberate the function of the blood–brain barrier. Here, we demonstrate that long-term exercise promotes the clearance of brain amyloid-β by improving the function of the blood–brain barrier in 5XFAD mice. Significantly, treating primary brain pericytes or endothelial cells with exosomes isolated from the brain of exercised 5XFAD mice improves cell proliferation and upregulates PDGFRβ, ZO-1, and claudin-5. Moreover, exosomes isolated from exercised mice exhibit significant changes in miR-532-5p. Administration or transfection of miR-532-5p to sedentary mice or primary brain pericytes and endothelial cells reproduces the improvement of blood–brain barrier function. Exosomal miR-532-5p targets EPHA4, and accordingly, expression of EphA4 is decreased in exercised mice and miR-532-5p overexpressed mice. A specific siRNA targeting EPHA4 recapitulates the effects on blood–brain barrier-associated cells observed in exercised 5XFAD mice. Overall, our findings suggest that exosomes released by the brain contain a specific miRNA that is altered by exercise and has an impact on blood–brain barrier function in AD.

  • Ingår i: Journal of The American Geriatrics Society. - : Wiley. - 0002-8614 .- 1532-5415. ; 70:11, s. 3138-3151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The longitudinal associations of sleep timing and time in bed (TIB) with dementia and cognitive decline in older adults are unclear. Methods: This population-based cohort study used data from 1982 participants who were aged >= 60 years, free of dementia, and living in rural communities in western Shandong, China. At the baseline (2014) and follow-up (2018) examinations, sleep parameters were assessed using standard questionnaires. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Dementia was diagnosed following the DSM-IV criteria, and the NIA-AA criteria for Alzheimer disease (AD). Data were analyzed using restricted cubic splines, Cox proportional-hazards models, and general linear models. Results: During the mean follow-up of 3.7 years, dementia was diagnosed in 97 participants (68 with AD). Restricted cubic spline curves showed J-shaped associations of sleep duration, TIB, and rise time with dementia risk, and a reverse J-shaped association with mid-sleep time. When sleep parameters were categorized into tertiles, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of incident dementia was 1.69 (95%CI 1.01-2.83) for baseline sleep duration >8 hours (vs. 7-8 h), 2.17 (1.22-3.87) for bedtime before 9 p.m. (vs. 10 p.m. or later), and 2.00 (1.23-3.24) for mid-sleep time before 1 a.m. (vs. 1-1.5 a.m.). Early bedtime and mid-sleep time were significantly associated with incident AD (HR range: 2.25-2.51; p < 0.05). Among individuals who were free of dementia at follow-up, baseline long TIB, early bedtime and mid-sleep time, early and late rise time, and prolonged TIB and advanced bedtime and mid-sleep time from baseline to follow-up were associated with a greater decline in MMSE score (p < 0.05). These associations with cognitive decline were statistically evident mainly among men or participants who were aged 60-74 years. Conclusions: Long TIB and early sleep timing are associated with an increased risk of dementia, and the associations with greater cognitive decline are evident only among older people aged 60-74 years and men.

  • The role of connectivity in significant bandgap narrowing for fused-pyrene based non-fullerene acceptors toward high-efficiency organic solar cells
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 8:12, s. 5995-6003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Great attention has been paid to developing low bandgap non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) for matching wide bandgap donor polymers to increase the photocurrent and therefore the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of NFA organic solar cells, while pyrene-core based acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) NFAs have been mainly reported via the 2,9-position connection due to their bisthieno[3′,2′-b']thienyl[a,h]pyrene fused via a five-membered ring bridge at the ortho-position of pyrene as the representative one named FPIC5, which has prohibited further narrowing their energy gap. Herein, an acceptor FPIC6 was exploited by creating the 1,8-position connection through fusing as bisthieno[3′,2′-b′]thienyl[f-g,m-n]pyrene linked at the bay-position via a six-membered bridge, with enhanced push-pull characteristics within such A-D-A structure. As a structural isomer of FPIC5, FPIC6 exhibited a much lower bandgap of 1.42 eV (1.63 eV for FPIC5). Therefore, the photocurrent and PCE of PTB7-Th:FPIC6 cells were improved to 21.50 mA cm-2 and 11.55%, respectively, due to the balanced mobilities, better photoluminescence quenching efficiency and optimized morphology, which are both ∼40% better than those of PTB7-Th:FPIC5 cells. Our results clearly proved that a pyrene fused core with 1,8-position connection with electron-withdrawing end groups instead of 2,9-position connection is an efficient molecular design strategy to narrow the optical bandgap and improve the photovoltaic performance of NFA based OSCs.

    • Objective: We sought to assess cognitive benefits of a community-based multi -domain intervention for improving cognition among older adults at risk of cog-nitive decline (COMBAT). Design: A two-armed cluster-randomized controlled trial. Setting and Participants: Community-dwelling older adults aged 60 years or older and were at risk of cognitive decline (n = 209). Intervention: In this 9-month intervention study, 10 community hospitals in Beijing, China, were randomized (1:1) to receive either a multidomain inter-vention of meditation, cognitive training, exercise, and nutrition counseling or usual care. The intervention was delivered with weekly 1-hour group training sessions and weekly home homework. Measurements: Primary outcome was change in cognition as measured by a composite Z score of seven cognitive tests. Secondary outcomes included subjective cognitive abilities, positive and nega-tive affective experiences, physical activity, and dietary habits. Assessments were administered at baseline, end of the intervention, and 1 year after com-pleting the intervention (1-year follow-up). Results: Immediately after the intervention, the intervention group showed significant enhancement in cogni-tive performance (p = 0.026). The between-group difference in the Z score of change of cognition was 0.20 (95% CI: 0.053, 0.35), with a Hedges' g of 0.40 (95% CI: 0.29, 0.50). However, this cognitive benefit was not significant at

  • Ionic liquids as a new cornerstone to support hydrogen energy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Green Chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1463-9262 .- 1463-9270. ; 25:13, s. 4981-4994
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a fuel or energy carrier, hydrogen has been identified as a key way to decarbonize electricity, industry, transportation, and heating sectors. Hydrogen can be produced by a variety of methods, among which water electrolysis driven by renewable energy is sustainable and nearly carbon-free. To use hydrogen widely, storage and transportation over long distances are another key issue. Apart from storage at high pressure and low temperature, hydrogen can be stored in organic compounds via chemical bonding under relatively mild conditions. Efficient utilization of hydrogen includes hydrogen fuel cells as an alternative to internal combustion engines. From the above scenarios, catalysis and reaction media are the key factors for realizing hydrogen energy implementation. Ionic liquids (ILs) offer new opportunities due to their tunable functional groups, low vapor pressure, and stable structures as additives, solvents, and charge transfer materials. ILs are known to produce solid catalysts with controllable properties, decorate solid catalysts with modified electrons and geometric structures, and serve as electrolytes and hydrogen storage media. This review summarizes and recaps the recent progress in how ILs act as a cornerstone to support the production, storage, and utilization of hydrogen. Furthermore, critical challenges and future research directions of ILs in hydrogen energy applications are also outlined.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2168-0485. ; 7:24, s. 20013-20021
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conductive multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-graphene sheets (rGOs)-cellulose fiber was prepared with an eco-friendly wet-spinning method in which ionic liquid (IL) was used as both green solvent and dispersant. It was found that the selected IL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate (EmimDep) shows remarkable capacities for dissolving cellulose and dispersing MWCNTs, and the synergistic effect of MWCNTs, rGOs, and cellulose results in a high electrical conductivity of 1195 S/m of MWCNTs-rGOs-cellulose fibers. Macropores and the double-layer structure of MWCNTs and rGOs can be observed by SEM in the studied fibers, and the number of macropores decreased with increasing rGOs amount, which is consistent with the result of the specific surface area. In addition, the prepared MWCNTs-rGOs-cellulose fibers present a nearly perfect electrical double-layer structure. The MWCNTs-rGOs-cellulose fiber with a mass ratio of 2:3:1 shows the best performance as the electrode candidate, with an electrical conductivity of 1195 S/m, specific capacitance of 597 mF/cm2, and specific surface area of 91 m2/g. Furthermore, the results from the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation evidenced that EmimDep can disperse CNTs effectively at 363.15 K, 1 atm compared to rGOs; the synergy effect of CNT and rGO exhibit great potential to enhance the dispersion than each individual component.

  • Ingår i: American Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0002-9270 .- 1572-0241. ; 118:3, s. 511-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: The joint associations across genetic risk, modifiable lifestyle factors, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains unclear.METHODS: Genetic susceptibility to Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) was estimated by polygenic risk scores and further categorized into high, intermediate, and low genetic risk categories. Weighted healthy lifestyle scores were constructed based on 5 common lifestyle factors and categorized into favorable (4 or 5 healthy lifestyle factors), intermediate (3 healthy lifestyle factors), and unfavorable (0-2 healthy lifestyle factors) groups. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for their associations.RESULTS: During the 12-year follow-up, 707 cases with CD and 1576 cases with UC were diagnosed in the UK Biobank cohort. Genetic risk and unhealthy lifestyle categories were monotonically associated with CD and UC risk with no multiplicative interaction between them. The HR of CD and UC were 2.24 (95% CI 1.75-2.86) and 2.15 (95% CI 1.82-2.53) for those with a high genetic risk, respectively. The HR of CD and UC for individuals with an unfavorable lifestyle were 1.94 (95% CI 1.61-2.33) and 1.98 (95% CI 1.73-2.27), respectively. The HR of individuals with a high genetic risk but a favorable lifestyle (2.33, 95% CI 1.58-3.44 for CD, and 2.05, 95% CI 1.58-2.66 for UC) were reduced nearly by half, compared with those with a high genetic risk but an unfavorable lifestyle (4.40, 95% CI 2.91-6.66 for CD and 4.44, 95% CI 3.34-5.91 for UC).DISCUSSION: Genetic and lifestyle factors were independently associated with susceptibility to incident CD and UC. Adherence to a favorable lifestyle was associated with a nearly 50% lower risk of CD and UC among participants at a high genetic risk.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Population-based studies have rarely explored the associations of the triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index, a surrogate marker of insulin resistance, with dementia and plasma biomarkers for amyloid beta (Aβ) and neurodegeneration. Methods: This population-based study included 5199 participants (age ≥ 65 years); of these, plasma Aβ, total tau, and neurofilament light chain (NfL) were measured in 1287 persons. Dementia and subtypes were diagnosed following the international criteria. TyG index was calculated as ln(fasting triglyceride(mg/dL) × fasting glucose[mg/dL]/2). Data were analyzed using logistic and general linear regression models. Results: Dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD) were diagnosed in 301, 195, and 95 individuals, respectively. A high TyG index was significantly associated with increased likelihoods of dementia and AD; the significant association with dementia remained among participants without cardiovascular disease or diabetes. In the biomarker subsample, a high TyG index was correlated with elevated plasma Aβ, but not with total tau or NfL.Discussion: High TyG index is associated with dementia, possibly via Aβ pathology.

    • The electrical conductivities of the dilute solutions containing ionic liquids (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [Hmim]Cl, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide [Hmim]Br, and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide [Hmim]I) with water and isopropanol were determined in the temperature ranging from 293.15 to 313.15 K. The liquid densities of all binary mixtures were further determined for model parameterization. In theoretical modeling, the limiting molar conductivities Λ0(T) were first obtained using the Debye-Hückel-Onsager (DHO) equation, and thereafter the ion association constants KA(T) were determined using the Shedlovsky equation. The effects of temperature, dielectric constant, and anion size on the values of Λ0(T) and KA(T) were systematically discussed. The Eyring activation enthalpy of charge transport ∆H* and the Walden values Λ0η for all studied binary mixtures were obtained from the temperature-dependent Λ0(T).

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optical Materials Express. - 2159-3930. ; 7:12, s. 4249-4257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the tsurface morphology and photoluminescence (PL) property of InAs quantum dots (QDs) on GaAs using bismuth (Bi) in the layer prior to or after the growth of QDs. Incorporating Bi in the layer prior to the QD deposition delays the onset of InAs QD formation resulting in a decrease in QD height and density. As a surfactant, adding Bi in the GaAs capping layer at a high growth temperature reduces the In surface diffusion length leading to uniform and well preserved InAs QDs in terms of height and density. The incorporation of 3% Bi at a low growth temperature, which forms a GaAsBi capping layer, can effectively lower the PL transition energy up to 163 meV and reduce the PL linewidth, leading to an emission wavelength of 1.365 ?m at 77 K.

  • MEA-based CO2 capture: a study focuses on MEA concentrations and process parameters
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Energy Research. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-598X. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CO2 capture using monoethanolamine (MEA) is one of the important decarbonization options and often considered as a benchmark, while the optimal MEA contraction and systematic process study are still lacking. In this work, firstly, the MEA concentrations between 15 and 30 wt% were studied from both process simulations with Aspen Plus and experimental measurements in the pilot-scale. 20 wt% MEA was identified as the preferable solution. Subsequently, a systematic analysis was conducted for CO2 capture using 20 wt% MEA with/without CO2 compression to study how various parameters, including gas flow rate, CO2 concentration, and CO2 removal rate, affected the energy demand and techno-economic performances quantitatively. The influence of each parameter on both energy demand and cost showed an obvious non-linear relationship, evidencing the importance of systematic analysis for further study on decarbonization. The evaluation indicated that the regeneration heat required the largest portion of energy demand. The economic analysis showed that the capital cost was more sensitive to the selected parameters than the operational cost, while the operational cost created a major change in the overall cost. In addition, the gas flow rate and CO2 concentration were the main parameters affecting the cost, rather than the CO2 removal rate. Finally, it was suggested that, for a new plant, CO2 capture showed the minimum investment cost per ton CO2 when operating the plant on a large scale, high CO2 concentration, and high CO2 removal rate; for an existing plant, the capture preferred to run with the high CO2 removal rate.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent decades, terrestrial vegetation in the northern hemisphere (NH) has been exposed to warming and more extremely high temperatures. However, the consequences of these changes for terrestrial vegetation growth remain poorly quantified and understood. By examining a satellite-based vegetation index, tree-ring measurements and land-surface model simulations, we discovered a consistent convex pattern in the responses of vegetation growth to temperature exposure (TE) for forest, shrub and grass in both the temperate (30°−50° N) and boreal (50°−70° N) NH during the period of 1982−2012. The response of vegetation growth to TE for the three vegetation types in both the temperate and boreal NH increased convergently with increasing temperature, until vegetation type-dependent temperature thresholds were reached. A TE beyond these temperature thresholds resulted in disproportionately weak positive or even strong negative responses. Vegetation growth in the boreal NH was more vulnerable to extremely high-temperature events than vegetation growth in the temporal NH. The non-linear responses discovered here provide new insights into the dynamics of northern terrestrial ecosystems in a warmer world.

    • BACKGROUND: Sleep dysregulation has been linked to gastrointestinal dysfunction and inflammation.AIMS: To explore the associations between sleep duration, daytime napping and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).METHODS: Exposure information was obtained from the baseline questionnaire. Sleep duration was coded as continuous and categorical (≤5, 6, 7, 8, ≥9 h/day) variables. Daytime napping was defined as yes (sometimes/usually) and no (never/rarely). Incident IBD cases were defined from primary care and hospital inpatient records. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) for the outcomes were constructed and categorised into low, intermediate and high risk. Hazard ratio (HR) and confidence interval (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression.RESULTS: The analysis included 2604 incident IBD cases (806 CD and 1798 UC) with a median follow-up of 12.0 years. Comparing sleep duration ≤5 with 7 h/day, the HR of IBD, CD and UC was 1.36 (95% CI, 1.17-1.59), 1.53 (95% CI, 1.17-2.00) and 1.29 (95% CI, 1.07-1.56), respectively. Comparing participants with and without daytime napping, the HR of IBD, CD and UC was 1.13 (95% CI, 1.05-1.23), 1.25 (95% CI, 1.08-1.44) and 1.09 (95% CI, 0.90-1.20), respectively. No interaction of sleep duration and daytime napping with PRS was detected.  However, the associations appeared stronger in individuals with high rather than low PRS.CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals positive associations between short sleep duration and daytime napping and IBD risk.

    • Pristine mountains are ideal settings to study transport and behavior of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) along gradients of climate and land cover. The present work investigated the concentrations and patterns of 28 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 25 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), 13 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 3 hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs) isomers in the air of the Shergyla Mountain, southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Endosulfan І, hexachlorobenzene, pentachlorobenzene, hexachlorocyclohexanes and dichlorodibenzotrichloroethane and its degradation products (DDTs) were the predominant compounds while PBDEs and HBCDs showed the lowest background concentrations. Most of the target POPs had significantly higher concentrations in summer than those in winter. Increasing trends of the concentrations of DDTs and endosulfan were found with increasing altitude on the western slope in the Shergyla Mountain. Potential forest filter effect was observed based on the lower air concentrations of the target POPs in the forest than the ones out of the forest.

    • This paper presents a study of phase noise in CMOS Colpitts and LC-tank oscillators. Closed-form symbolic formulas for the 1/f2 phase-noiseregion are derived for both the Colpitts oscillator (either single-ended or differential) and the LC-tank oscillator, yielding highly accurate results under very general assumptions. A comparison between the differential Colpitts and the LC-tank oscillator is also carried out, which shows that the latter is capable of a 2-dB lower phase-noise flgure-of-merit (FoM) when simplified oscillator designs and ideal MOS models are adopted. Several prototypesof both Colpitts and LC-tank oscillators have been implemented in a 0.35-μm CMOS process. The best performance of the LC-tank oscillatorsshows a phase noise of - 142 dBc/Hz at 3-MHz offset frequency from a 2.9-GHz carrier with a 16-mW power consumption, resulting in an excellent FoM of ∼189 dBc/Hz. For the same oscillation frequency, the FoM displayed by the differential Colpitts oscillators is ∼5 dB lower.

  • Ingår i: Wetlands (Wilmington, N.C.). - : SPRINGER. - 0277-5212 .- 1943-6246. ; 43:8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wetlands cover a small portion of the world, but have disproportionate influence on global carbon (C) sequestration, carbon dioxide and methane emissions, and aquatic C fluxes. However, the underlying biogeochemical processes that affect wetland C pools and fluxes are complex and dynamic, making measurements of wetland C challenging. Over decades of research, many observational, experimental, and analytical approaches have been developed to understand and quantify pools and fluxes of wetland C. Sampling approaches range in their representation of wetland C from short to long timeframes and local to landscape spatial scales. This review summarizes common and cutting-edge methodological approaches for quantifying wetland C pools and fluxes. We first define each of the major C pools and fluxes and provide rationale for their importance to wetland C dynamics. For each approach, we clarify what component of wetland C is measured and its spatial and temporal representativeness and constraints. We describe practical considerations for each approach, such as where and when an approach is typically used, who can conduct the measurements (expertise, training requirements), and how approaches are conducted, including considerations on equipment complexity and costs. Finally, we review key covariates and ancillary measurements that enhance the interpretation of findings and facilitate model development. The protocols that we describe to measure soil, water, vegetation, and gases are also relevant for related disciplines such as ecology. Improved quality and consistency of data collection and reporting across studies will help reduce global uncertainties and develop management strategies to use wetlands as nature-based climate solutions.

    • Developing low-frequency acoustic senor with high sensitivity is crucial for diverse applications, ranging from seismic monitoring, military operations, to pipeline surveillance. Here, we have proposed a high-sensitivity graphene oxide (GO)-based Fabry-Perot low-frequency sensor, in which a 170 nm thick, large-area and uniformly GO film was prepared by a vacuum filtration method. To enhance the accuracy and stability of the sensor, a low-coherence interference system based on birefringent crystal blocks was designed utilizing a three-step phase-shifting arctangent algorithm. Our sensor exhibited a sensitivity of -93.48 dB re 1 rad/μPa at 6-60 Hz with a fluctuation of 0.6 dB. The minimum detectable pressure of the sensor was measured at 0.37 μPa/Hz1/2 @20 Hz with a signal to noise ratio of 135.41 dB. Overall, this sensor offers simplicity in preparation, high sensitivity, low detectable sound pressure, making it a significant asset for low-frequency acoustic applications.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heat-transfer enhancement in manure slurry is crucial for increasing the efficiency and production of biogas during anaerobic digestion in biogas plants. In this study, a novel heat exchanger with an optimal twisted geometry was developed based on the numerical screening of the twisted tubes with equilateral polygons, and experiments were conducted to validate the numerical results. It was observed that the SST k-ω model is more efficient than other turbulence models in representing the heat transfer performance of the twisted tubes, and the numerical model with a thermostatic wall can be used to reliably screen the twisted geometries. The twisted hexagonal tube has the optimal geometry, with enhancement capability of up to 1.4 times compared to that of the circular tube. The formation of high continuity regions with relatively strong heat-transfer rates along the heat-exchange wall is the main reason for the high performance during heat transfer. The external heating process was integrated in a full-scale biogas plant, and the model and algorithm were developed and validated with additional experiments to describe the overall performance of both conventional and screened optimal geometries under different conditions. It was observed that a profit equivalent to 39% of total production for a large-scale biogas plant can be achieved owing to energy conservation in external heating with the twisted hexagonal tubes.

    • BackgroundEvidence for antioxidants, minerals and vitamins in relation to the risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) is limited and inconsistent. This mendelian randomization (MR) study aimed to examine the causal associations of circulating levels of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins with CD and UC.MethodsSingle-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with antioxidants (beta-carotene, lycopene and uric acid), minerals (copper, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium), and vitamins (folate, vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E and K1) were employed as instrumental variables. Genetic associations with CD and UC were extracted from the UK Biobank, the FinnGen study and the International Inflammatory Bowel Disease Genetics Consortium. The inverse variance weighted method and sensitivity analyses were performed.ResultsGenetically predicted higher lycopene (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.91–0.97), vitamins D (OR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.54–0.79) and K1 (OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.90–0.97) levels were inversely associated with CD risk, whereas genetically predicted higher magnesium (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.23–1.90) levels were positively associated with CD risk. Higher levels of genetically predicted lycopene (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.88–0.95), phosphorus (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.58–0.82), selenium (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.85–0.97), zinc (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.89–0.94), folate (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.56–0.92) and vitamin E (OR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.69–0.88) were associated with reduced UC risk, whereas genetically predicted high levels of calcium (OR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.22–1.76) and magnesium (OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.03–1.49) were associated with increased risk of UC.ConclusionsOur study provided evidence that circulating levels of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins might be causally linked to the development of IBD.

  • Designing heat exchanger for enhancing heat transfer of slurries in biogas plants

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heat transfer geometries with enhanced performance for the slurries with high viscosity can improve the net raw biogas production in bio-methane process. In this study, the rheological properties of different slurries were tested, correlated and implemented to computational fluid dynamics (CFD). CFD was then used to screen a new geometry based on the twisted tube combined with mechanism study, and experimental testing was conducted for verification. It shows that the twisted hexagonal tube (THT) has the highest performance. The mechanism for enhancing the heat transfer with THT was mainly due to the effective shear rate. Furthermore, the waste-heat recovery with the THT heat exchanger in biogas production was estimated quantitatively and compared with the normal heat exchanger and scraped-surface heat exchanger (SSHE). Compared to the normal heat exchanger, for THT, the increase of net raw biogas production δNRBP can be up to 17%, while it is only up to 8.53% for SSHE. Besides, the external heating up processes with THT and normal heat exchanger were studied to estimate the heating time for different temperature fluctuations and power requirements of boiler. It is found that the process with THT can save 25-38% heating time for the anaerobic reactor compared to the normal heat exchanger. Therefore, designed THT heat exchanger is promising, and the developed methods can also be beneficial for studying other heat transfer processes.

  • Heat-transfer enhancement for corn straw slurry from biogas plants by twisted hexagonal tubes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heat-transfer geometries that enhance heat transfer performance for slurries increase the net raw biogas production in the bio-methane process. In this study, the precise temperature-dependent rheologies of corn straw slurry with 6 and 8% total solid were determined, collected, and modeled to conduct a numerical simulation via CFD, the first instance of such research. Subsequently, the reliability of the numerical results was verified with heat-transfer experiments. The heat-transfer performances of the circular, twisted square and twisted hexagonal tubes were estimated numerically, ultimately showing that the twisted hexagonal tube performed optimally with an enhancement factor of up to 2.0 in the turbulent region, compared to the circular tube. Based on the numerical results, the mechanism of heat-transfer enhancement was revealed, showing balanced radial mixing and the near-wall shear effect that leads to a strong and continuous shear rate under a considerable radial-flow intensity. An engineering equation was obtained for the performance evaluation, and the waste-heat recovery from corn straw slurry was analyzed, showing the twisted hexagonal tube can increase the net raw biogas production by up to 17.0% compared to the circular tube.

  • Heat-transfer performance of twisted tubes for highly viscous food waste slurry from biogas plants
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Biotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts. - : Springer Nature. - 2731-3654. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The use of food waste as feedstock shows high production of biogas via anaerobic digestion, but requires efficient heat transfer in food waste slurry at heating and cooling processes. The lack of rheological properties hampered the research on the heat-transfer process for food waste slurry. Referentially, the twisted hexagonal and elliptical rubes have been proved as the optimal enhanced geometry for heat transfer of medium viscous slurries with non-Newtonian behavior and Newtonian fluids, respectively. It remains unknown whether improvements can be achieved by using twisted geometries in combination with food waste slurry in processes including heating and cooling. Results: Food waste slurry was observed to exhibit highly viscous, significant temperature-dependence, and strongly shear-thinning rheological characteristics. Experiments confirmed the heat-transfer enhancement of twisted hexagonal tubes for food waste slurry and validated the computational fluid dynamics-based simulations with an average deviation of 14.2%. Twisted hexagonal tubes were observed to be more effective at low-temperature differences and possess an enhancement factor of up to 2.75; while twisted elliptical tubes only exhibited limited heat-transfer enhancement at high Reynolds numbers. The heat-transfer enhancement achieved by twisted hexagonal tubes was attributed to the low dynamic viscosity in the boundary layer induced by the strong and continuous shear effect near the walls of the tube. Conclusions: This study determined the rheological properties of food waste slurry, confirmed the heat-transfer enhancement of the twisted hexagonal tubes experimentally and numerically, and revealed the mechanism of heat-transfer enhancement based on shear rate distributions.

  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 207, s. 146-155

    • Waste-heat recovery from discharged slurries can improve the net raw biogas production in the bio-methane process in order to meet the demand for a next-generation of anaerobic digestion. In this study, a numerical model of a scraped-surface heat exchanger was proposed with the consideration of the complete and precise rheological behaviour of the slurry of animal manure for the first time for achieving highly efficient waste-heat recovery. The rheological model results were verified with new experimental data measured in this work. Subsequently, the convective heat-transfer coefficient of the scraped-surface heat exchanger was calculated numerically with the proposed numerical model, and the performance was determined. Then, the contributions of waste-heat recovery from the slurry to the biogas production using a general shell-and-tube heat exchanger and the scraped-surface heat exchanger were calculated quantitatively and compared. For the case of scraped-surface heat exchanger, the increase of net raw biogas production can be up to 8.53%, which indicates that there is a great potential to increase the net raw biogas production in the bio-methane process using a scraped-surface heat exchanger with low-cost equipment and a compactible structure.

  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier. - 1876-6102. ; 142, s. 880-885
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Waste-heat recovery from discharged slurries is important to improve the biogas production efficiency but still remains challenge duo to the special properties of slurries in anaerobic digestion process. In this work, numerical study was carried out to investigate the flow field, and heat transfer performance of slurry from biogas plant in the twisted hexagonal and other twisted tubes was simulated with computer fluid dynamic (CFD) for the first time. The numerical method was validated with experimental data from the literature. The heat transfer performance and flow resistance of twisted hexagon tube were calculated and compared with other types of twisted tubes. The enhancement factor of the twisted hexagonal tube reached to 2 and kept optimum at turbulence flow region compared to the twisted tubes with square and elliptical cross section. Meanwhile, the mechanism of heat transfer enhancement with different twisted tubes was further studied, and the optimal field synergy and minimum local circulation flow near the wall are the main reasons for the high performance and low flow resistance of the twisted hexagonal tube.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Waste-heat recovery from discharged slurries can improve the net raw biogas production in bio-methane process in order to meet the demand of a new generation of anaerobic digestion. In order to achieve a high efficient waste-heat recovery, in this work, a mathematical model of waste-heat recovery process with surface scraped heat exchanger (SSHE) was proposed with the consideration of the shear rate and temperature-dependent rheological behaviour. The convective heat transfer performance of SSHE was calculated numerically where slurry was considered. The contribution of waste heat recovery from the slurry to biogas production by SSHE and general shell-and-tube heat exchanger (STHE) were firstly calculated quantitatively, and the increase of net raw biogas production could be over 13.5% by SSHE with need of heat exchange area less than a quarter of STHE's, which showed a great potential to increase the net raw biogas production in bio-methane process with low equipment investments and more compactible structure.

  • Slippage on Porous Spherical Superhydrophobic Surface Revolutionizes Heat Transfer of Non-Newtonian Fluid
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials Interfaces. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2196-7350. ; 9:34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a new strategy to achieve high-efficient heat transfer for non-Newtonian fluids with slippage using a stably prepared superhydrophobic coating is presented. A superhydrophobic coating is prepared on the inner surface of a sleeve at specific shear stress. The slippage and heat-transfer processes of the typical non-Newtonian fluid–1% carboxymethyl cellulose solutions on the superhydrophobic coating are investigated simultaneously. A novel porous spherical type of superhydrophobic coating with a contact angle of 168° is obtained. It is found that the shear stress in electrodeposition is a key parameter to control the morphology and wetting ability of the superhydrophobic coating. The slip length and enhancement factor of heat transfer for the non-Newtonian fluid on the coating are found in a range of 20–900 µm and 1.47 experimentally. A new parameter is proposed as Reynolds number Re divided by the dimensionless slip length ls* (Re/ls*) for the heat-transfer enhancement with slippage, which can be used as the guide for designing coating and selecting the operating conditions. The Re/ls* is <4, which can enhance the heat transfer via the slippage.

  • Therapeutic targets for inflammatory bowel disease : proteome-wide Mendelian randomization and colocalization analyses
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EBioMedicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-3964. ; 89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Identifying new drug targets for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is urgently needed. The proteome is a major source of therapeutic targets. We conducted a proteome-wide Mendelian randomization (MR) and colocalization analyses to identify possible targets for IBD.Methods: Summary-level data of 4907 circulating protein levels were extracted from a large-scale protein quantitative trait loci study including 35,559 individuals. Genetic associations with IBD and its subtypes were obtained from the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Genetics Consortium (25,024 cases and 34,915 controls), the FinnGen study (7206 cases and 253,199 controls), and the UK Biobank study (7045 cases and 449,282 controls). MR analysis was conducted to estimate the associations between protein and IBD risk. The colocalization analysis was used to examine whether the identified proteins and IBD shared casual variants.Findings: Genetically predicted levels of 3, and 5 circulating proteins were associated with IBD and ulcerative colitis (UC), respectively. With high supporting evidence of colocalization, genetically predicted MST1 (macrophage stim-ulating 1) and HGFAC (hepatocyte growth factor activator) levels were inversely associated with IBD risks. The as-sociations of STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3), MST1, CXCL5 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 5), and ITPKA (inositol-trisphosphate 3-kinase A) with the risk of UC were supported by colocalization analysis.Interpretation: The proteome-wide MR investigation identified many proteins associated with the risk of IBD. MST1, HGFAC, STAT3, ITPKA, and CXCL5 deserve further investigation as potential therapeutic targets for IBD. 2023;89: Published https://doi.org/10. 1016/j.ebiom.2023. 104494

  • Negative thermal quenching of below-bandgap photoluminescence in InPBi
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 110:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports a temperature-dependent (10-280 K) photoluminescence (PL) study of below-bandgap electron-hole recombinations and anomalous negative thermal quenching of PL intensity in InP1- xBix (x = 0.019 and 0.023). Four PL features are well resolved by curve-fitting of the PL spectra, of which the energies exhibit different temperature dependence. The integral intensities of the two high-energy features diminish monotonically as temperature rises up, while those of the two low-energy features decrease below but increase anomalously above 180 K. A phenomenological model is established that the residual electrons in the final state of the PL transition transfer into nonradiative state via thermal hopping, and the thermal hopping produces in parallel holes in the final state and hence enhances the radiative recombination significantly. A reasonable interpretation of the PL processes in InPBi is achieved, and the activation energies of the PL quenching and thermal hopping are deduced. © 2017 Author(s).

  • CO2 separation using ionic liquid-based absorbents : thermodynamics and kinetics
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ionic liquids (ILs) have shown great potential to be used as absorbents for CO2 separation owing to their unique properties such as immeasurably low vapour pressure, high thermal stability, high CO2 affinity, and tunable structure. A huge amount of researches have been carried out, and most of them focused on developing novel ILs for CO2 separation. However, high viscosity will impede the IL-based absorbents for the large-scale applications in CO2 separation. The goal of this thesis was to develop IL-based hybrid green absorbents (i.e. choline-2-pyrrolidine-carboxylic acid/polyethylene glycol/H2O ([Cho][Pro]/PEG200/H2O) and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide/titanium dioxide /PEG200 ([Hmim][Tf2N]/TiO2/PEG200)) for CO2 separation, in which H2O and/or PEG200 were used as co-solvents to adjust the viscosity. A systematic study was conducted from pure to multi-component systems convering experimental measurements and theoretical modeling of thermdynmaics and kinetics, and thus the effects of co-solvents on properties, phase equilibria, and kinetics were also analyzed. To provide reliable and systematic properties and study the effect of H2O, the properties of PEG200 and PEG200/H2O were surveyed, evaluated, and correlated. The density and viscosity of [Cho][Pro]/PEG200/H2O were measured and correlated, and the excess mole volume and excess Gibbs energy of activation were estimated to understand the molecular structure and interactions between [Cho][Pro]/PEG200 and H2O. The results showed that H2O and PEG200 could decrease the viscosity of the hybrid absorbent significantly, and H2O interacted strongly with [Cho][Pro]/PEG200.To obtain reliable and systematic gas solibilities and analyze the effect of H2O, the solubilities of pure CO2, CH4, and N2 in PEG200 were surveyed, measured, evaluated, and described with theoretical models. The CO2, CH4, and N2 solubilities in PEG200/H2O were measured and described with the Redlich-Kwong Nonrandom-Two-Liquid (RK-NRTL) model. The CO2 solubilities in [Cho][Pro]/PEG200 and [Cho][Pro]/H2O were also surveyed, measured, evaluated, and described using the RK-NRTL model. Furthermore, CO2 solubility in the hybrid absorbent was predicted with the model and compared with the new experimental results. The further investigation showed that the formation of carbomate dominated the entire CO2 absorption process by [Cho][Pro]/PEG200/H2O, and the presence of H2O resulted in the formation of bicarbonate. To study the kinetics systematically combined with the effect of H2O, the liquid-side mass-transfer coefficients (kL) of [Cho][Pro]/PEG200/H2O were obtained from the CO2 diffusion coefficients () and the kL values in PEG200/H2O, in which was calculated from the density and viscosity of the hybrid absorbents, while the kL values in PEG200/H2O were measured experimentally. The reaction rate constant of CO2 in the hybrid absorbents was also estimated.Based on the systematic studies from experimental measurement and modeling, it showed that 30 wt%[Cho][Pro]/H2O + PEG200 could be promising for CO2 separation with the consideration of both thermodynamic and kinetic properties. In addition, the hybrid absorbent also showed the good recyclability. To use the confinement as the other strategy for further developing IL-based technology, the CO2 solubility in [Hmim][Tf2N]/TiO2/PEG200 with different ratios of [Hmim][Tf2N]/TiO2 was measured, and the Henry’s constant and absorption enthalpy of CO2 in the hybrid absorbent were calculated. The CO2 solubility in the hybrid absorbent was described with the Henry's law, the contribution of the confinement effect on the CO2 solubility was quantified, and the relationship between the roughness of TiO2 and molecular parameters was established. The results showed that the mass ratio of [Hmim][NTf2]/TiO2 in the hybrid absorbent should be lower than 5.72 %, where the contribution of confinement occupied around 20 % of the total CO2 absorption capacity in [Hmim][NTf2]/T500/PEG200. 2.88 wt%[Hmim][NTf2]/T500 + PEG200 could be promising for CO2 separation on aspects of CO2 capacity and absorption enthplay, and further study will be conducted on the properties and CO2 absorption kinetics.
