  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Amplitude analysis of the KSKS system produced in radiative J /psi decays
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 98:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An amplitude analysis of the KSKS system produced in radiative J/psi decays is performed using the (1310.6 +/- 7.0) x 10(6) nip decays collected by the BESIII detector. Two approaches are presented. A mass-dependent analysis is performed by parametrizing the KSKS invariant mass spectrum as a sum of Breit-aligner line shapes. Additionally, a mass-independent analysis is performed to extract a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the KSKS system while making minimal assumptions about the properties and number of poles in the amplitude. The dominant amplitudes in the mass-dependent analysis include the f(0)(1710), f(0)(2200), and f(2)'(1525). The mass-independent results, which are made available as input for further studies, are consistent with those of the mass-dependent analysis and are useful for a systematic study of hadronic interactions. The branching fraction of radiative J/psi decays to KSKS is measured to be (8.1 +/- 0.4) x 10(-4), where the uncertainty is systematic and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

  • Measurement of e(+)e(-) -> K(K)over-barJ/psi cross sections at center-of-mass energies from 4.189 to 4.600 GeV
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 97:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the process e(+)e(-) -> K (K) over barJ/psi at center-of-mass energies from 4.189 to 4.600 GeV using 4.7 fb(-1) of data collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross sections for the reactions e(+)e(-) -> K(+)K(-)J/psi and K(S)(0)K(S)(0)J/psi are measured as a function of center-of-mass energy. The energy dependence of the cross section for e(+)e(-) -> K(+)K(-)J/psi is shown to differ from that for pi(+)pi(-)J/psi in the region around the Y(4260). In addition, there is evidence for a structure around 4.5 GeV in the e(+)e(-) -> K(+)K(-)J/psi cross section that is not present in pi(+)pi(-)J/psi.

  • Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of D*(s0) (2317)(+/-) -> pi D-0(s)+/-
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 97:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The process e(+)e(-) -> D*D-+(s)*(s0) (2317)(-) + c.c. is observed for the first time with the data sample of 567 pb(-1) collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider at a center-of-mass energy root s = 4.6 GeV. The statistical significance of the D*(s0) (2317)(+/-) signal is 5.8 sigma and the mass is measured to be (2318.3 +/- 1.2 +/- 1.2) MeV/c(2). The absolute branching fraction B(D*(s0) (2317)(+/-) -> pi D-0(s)+/-) is measured as 1.00(-0.14)(+0.00) (stat)(-0.14)(+0.00) (syst) for the first time. The uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

  • Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of the Inclusive Decay Lambda(+)(c) -> Lambda plus X
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 121:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on an e(+)e(-) collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb(-1) taken at the center-of-mass energy of root s = 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay Lambda(+)(c) -> Lambda + X to be B(Lambda(+)(c) -> Lambda + X) = (38.2(-2.2)(+2.8) +/- 0.9)% using the double-tag method, where X refers to any possible final state particles. In addition, we search for direct CP violation in the charge asymmetry of this inclusive decay for the first time, and obtain A(CP) [B(Lambda(+)(c) -> Lambda + X) - B((Lambda) over bar (-)(c) -> (Lambda) over bar + X)]/[B(Lambda(+)(c) -> Lambda + X) + B((Lambda) over bar (-)(c) -> (Lambda) over bar + X)] = (2.1(-6.6)(+7.0) +/- 1.6)%, a statistically limited result with no evidence of CP violation.

    • By analyzing a data sample of 2.93 fb(-1) collected at root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage rings, we measure the branching fractions B(D-0 -> omega eta) = (2.15 +/- 0.17(stat) +/- 0.15(sys)) x 10(-3), B(D-0 ->eta pi(0)) = (0.58 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.05(sys)) x 10(-3), B(D-0 ->eta'pi(0)) = (0.93 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.09(sys)) x 10(-3), B(D-0 -> eta eta) = (2.20 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.06(sys)) x 10(-3) and B(D-0 -> eta'eta) = (0.94 degrees +/- 0.25(stat) +/- 0.11(sys)) x 10(-3). We note that B(D-0 -> omega eta) is measured for the first time and that B(D-0 -> eta eta) is measured with much improved precision.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 97:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The charm semileptonic decays D+ -> eta e(+)nu(e) and D+ -> eta'e(+)nu(e) are studied with a sample of e(+)e(-) collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb(-1) collected at root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. We measure the branching fractions for D+ -> eta e(+)upsilon(e) to be (10.74 +/- 0.81 +/- 0.51)x10(-4), and for D+ -> eta'e(+)nu(e) to be (1.91 +/- 0.51 +/- 0.13) x 10(-4), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In addition, we perform a measurement of the form factor in the decay D+ -> eta e(+)nu(e) . All the results are consistent with those obtained by the CLEO-c experiment.

  • Measurement of e(+)e(-) -> D(D)over-bar cross sections at the psi(3770) resonance
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Chinese Physics C. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1674-1137 .- 2058-6132. ; 42:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report new measurements of the cross sections for the production of D (D) over bar final states at the psi(3770) resonance. Our data sample consists of an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data produced by the BEPCII collider and collected and analyzed with the BESIII detector. We exclusively reconstruct three D-0 and six D+ hadronic decay modes and use the ratio of the yield of fully reconstructed D (D) over bar events ("double tags") to the yield of all reconstructed D or (D) over bar mesons ("single tags") to determine the number of D-0(D) over bar (0) and D+D- events, benefiting from the cancellation of many systematic uncertainties. Combining these yields with an independent determination of the integrated luminosity of the data sample, we find the cross sections to be sigma(e(+)e(-) -> D-0(D) over bar (0)(-) )=(3.615 +/- 0.010 +/- 0.038) nb and sigma(e(+)e(-) -> D+D-)=(2.830 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.026) nb, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

  • Precision Measurement of the e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda)over-bar(c)(-) Cross Section Near Threshold
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 120:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cross section of the e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar (-)(c) process is measured with unprecedented precision using data collected with the BESIII detector at root s = 4574.5, 4580.0, 4590.0 and 4599.5 MeV. The nonzero cross section near the Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar (-)(c) production threshold is cleared. At center-of-mass energies root s = 4574.5 and 4599.5 MeV, the higher statistics data enable us to measure the Lambda(c) polar angle distributions. From these, the.c electric over magnetic form-factor ratios (vertical bar G(E)/G(M)vertical bar) are measured for the first time. They are found to be 1.14 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.07 and 1.23 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.03, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

  • First measurement of e(+)e(-) -> pK(S)(0)(n)over-barK(-) + c.c. above open charm threshold
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 98:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The process e(+)e(-) -> pK(S)(0)(n) over barK(-) + c.c. and its intermediate processes are studied for the first time, using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII at center-of-mass energies of 3.773, 4.008, 4.226, 4.258, 4.358, 4.416, and 4.600 GeV, with a total integrated luminosity of 7.4 fb(-1). The Born cross section of e(+)e(-) -> pK(S)(0)(n) over barK(-) + c.c. is measured at each center-of-mass energy, but no significant resonant structure in the measured cross-section line shape between 3.773 and 4.600 GeV is observed. No evident structure is detected in the pK(-), nK(S)(0), pK(S)(0), nK(+), p (n) over bar, or (KSK-)-K-0 invariant mass distributions except for Lambda(1520). The Born cross sections of e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(n) over barK(S)(0) + c.c. and e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(p) over barK(+) + c.c. are measured, and the 90% confidence level upper limits on the Born cross sections of e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(Lambda) over bar (1520) are determined at the seven center-of-mass energies. There is an evident difference in line shape and magnitude of the measured cross sections between e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(-> pK(-))(n) over barK(S)(0) and e(+)e(-) -> pK-(Lambda) over bar (1520)(-> (n) over barK(S)(0)).

    • Using an e(+)e(-) collision data sample of 2.93 fb(-1) collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we report the observation of D-0 -> a(0)(980)(-)e(+)nu(e) and evidence for D+ -> a(0)(980)(0)e(+)nu(e) with significances of 6.4 sigma and 2.9 sigma, respectively. The absolute branching fractions are determined to be B(D-0 -> a(0)(980)(-)e(+)nu(e)) x B(a(0)(980)(-) -> eta pi(-)) = [1.33(-0.29)(+0.33)(stat) +/- 0.09(syst)] x 10(-4) and B(D+ -> a(0)(980)(0)e(+)nu(e)) x B(a(0)(980)(0) -> eta pi(0)) = [1.66(-0.66)(+0.81)(stat) +/- 0.11(syst) x 10(-4). This is the first time the a(0)(980) meson has been measured in a D-0 semileptonic decay, which would open one more interesting page in the investigation of the nature of the puzzling a(0)(980) states.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 98:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a data sample of (1310.6 +/- 7.0) x 10(6) J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we perform the first experimental search for invisible decays of a light vector meson (V = omega, phi) via J/psi -> V-eta decays. The decay of eta -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) is utilized to tag the V meson decaying into the invisible final state. No evidence for a significant invisible signal is observed, and the upper limits on the ratio of branching fractions at the 90% confidence level are determined to be B(omega -> invisible)/B(omega -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)) < 8.1 x 10(-5) and B(phi -> invisible)/B(phi -> K+K-) < 3.4 x 10(-4). By using the world average values of B(omega -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and B(phi -> K+K-,) the upper limits on the decay branching fractions at the 90% confidence level are set as B(omega -> invisible) < 7.3 x 10(-5) and B(phi -> invisible) < 1.7 x 10(-4), respectively.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Computer Vision – ECCV 2018 Workshops. - Cham : Springer Publishing Company. - 9783030110086 - 9783030110093 ; , s. 3-53
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2018 is the sixth annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of over eighty trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis and a “real-time” experiment simulating a situation where a tracker processes images as if provided by a continuously running sensor. A long-term tracking subchallenge has been introduced to the set of standard VOT sub-challenges. The new subchallenge focuses on long-term tracking properties, namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. A new dataset has been compiled and a performance evaluation methodology that focuses on long-term tracking capabilities has been adopted. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term and the new long-term tracking subchallenges. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website (http://votchallenge.net).

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2016 aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. Results of 70 trackers are presented, with a large number of trackers being published at major computer vision conferences and journals in the recent years. The number of tested state-of-the-art trackers makes the VOT 2016 the largest and most challenging benchmark on short-term tracking to date. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the Appendix. The VOT2016 goes beyond its predecessors by (i) introducing a new semi-automatic ground truth bounding box annotation methodology and (ii) extending the evaluation system with the no-reset experiment.

  • Novel Approach on Developing TiO2-Supported Heteropolyacids Catalyst for the Efficient Conversion of Xylose to Furfural
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy & Fuels. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0887-0624 .- 1520-5029. ; 36:14, s. 7599-7607
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conversion of biomass-derived monosaccharides to value-added platform compounds, regarded as the alternative biofuels precursors, has attracted increasing attention. This work provides a novel approach on developing efficient and recyclable catalyst for biorefining. Herein, a titania-supported tungstophosphoric acid (TPA-TiO2) nanocomposite catalyst with advantages in acidity flexibility and catalytic stability was proposed for the efficient dehydration of xylose to furfural. The loading of the active component of TPA played an important role in the acidity and Lewis/Brønsted acids distribution of the catalyst. The structure characterization of the catalyst showed that the TPA particles were distributed well in TiO2 support. After the optimization of catalytic reaction conditions, the xylose conversion could approach to 96.12% while the furfural yield of 76.71% was obtained at 190 °C for 60 min catalyzed by TiO2-TPA-3 in a methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)–water biphasic solvent system. It was still about 80% of the initial yield after the fifth recycling of the TiO2-supported heteropolyacids catalyst. Furthermore, the reaction kinetics of xylose dehydration to furfural was investigated. The catalytic system in this work had a lower activation energy for xylose dehydration, and the decrease in furfural yield was mainly caused by the side reaction of furfural with intermediates. This work provides a novel approach on developing efficient and recyclable catalyst for biorefining.

  • Distributed dynamic event-triggered communication and control for multi-agent consensus : A hybrid system approach
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-0255 .- 1872-6291. ; 618, s. 191-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the output-based event-triggered communication and control for linear multi-agent consensus under a directed graph based on a co-design method. The communication among the agents, as well as the controller updates, are determined by some new event-triggering mechanisms, in order to reduce the use of the network resources. To simultaneously guarantee the significant properties including the asymptotic consensus, and strong Zeno-freeness (strictly positive inter-event times), a novel dis-tributed dynamic event-triggered protocol is proposed. Unlike the most-existing emulation-based approaches in which the control gain is previously decided, a systematic co-design procedure is proposed to design the controller gain, the observer gain, and the event-triggering mechanisms altogether in terms of solving a linear matrix inequality opti-mization problem. Based on the resulting hybrid system framework, a hybrid model is established for the distributed closed-loop system and the asymptotic consensus is achieved. Finally, a numerical example is presented to verify our systematic design methodology.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Engineering Informatics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1474-0346 .- 1873-5320. ; 60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturing systems envisioned for factories of the future will promote human-centricity for close collaboration in a shared working environment towards better overall productivity within the context of Industry 5.0. Robust and accurate recognition and prediction of human intentions are crucial to reliable and safe collaborative operations between humans and robots. For this purpose, this paper proposed a safety-aware human-centric collaborative assembly approach driven by function blocks, human action recognition for intention detection, and collision avoidance for safe robot control. Within the context, a deep learning-based recognition system is developed for high-accuracy human intention recognition and prediction, and an assembly feature-based approach driven by function blocks is presented for assembly execution and control. Thus, assembly features and human behaviours during assembly are formulated to support safe assembly actions. Skeleton-based human behaviours are defined as control inputs to an adaptive safety-aware scheme. The scheme includes collaborative and parallel mode-based pre-warning and obstacle avoidance approaches for a human-centric collaborative assembly system. The former is to monitor and regulate robot control modes when working in parallel with humans, and the latter uses a position-based approach to control robot actions by adaptively adjusting obstacle avoidance trajectories in a dynamic collaborative environment. The findings of this paper reveal the effectiveness of the developed system, as experimentally validated through an engine-assembly case study.

    • Advances in vehicle technology open up both opportunities and challenges for human-machine interface (HMI) design in intelligent vehicles. Design guidelines for icons in central consoles of vehicles have been discussed in human-computer interaction community, but more study and innovation are needed in icon design. In this paper, we investigated the displayed line thickness and size of icons in the intelligent vehicle’s central control screen, based on international design guidelines and standards. The experiment involved 17 participants performing simulated in-vehicle secondary task. The result from the experiments shows that the usability of icons increases and the driver’s workload decreases as the icons get larger. We also found a set of recommended values for size and line thickness of icons in this context. Future work will focus on providing design guidelines for other aspects of HMI design in intelligent vehicles.

    • Background: Although the associations between genetic variations and lung cancer risk have been explored, the epigenetic consequences of DNA methylation in lung cancer development are largely unknown. Here, the genetically predicted DNA methylation markers associated with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) risk by a two-stage case-control design were investigated. Methods: The genetic prediction models for methylation levels based on genetic and methylation data of 1595 subjects from the Framingham Heart Study were established. The prediction models were applied to a fixed-effect meta-analysis of screening data sets with 27,120 NSCLC cases and 27,355 controls to identify the methylation markers, which were then replicated in independent data sets with 7844 lung cancer cases and 421,224 controls. Also performed was a multi-omics functional annotation for the identified CpGs by integrating genomics, epigenomics, and transcriptomics and investigation of the potential regulation pathways. Results: Of the 29,894 CpG sites passing the quality control, 39 CpGs associated with NSCLC risk (Bonferroni-corrected p ≤ 1.67 × 10−6) were originally identified. Of these, 16 CpGs remained significant in the validation stage (Bonferroni-corrected p ≤ 1.28 × 10−3), including four novel CpGs. Multi-omics functional annotation showed nine of 16 CpGs were potentially functional biomarkers for NSCLC risk. Thirty-five genes within a 1-Mb window of 12 CpGs that might be involved in regulatory pathways of NSCLC risk were identified. Conclusions: Sixteen promising DNA methylation markers associated with NSCLC were identified. Changes of the methylation level at these CpGs might influence the development of NSCLC by regulating the expression of genes nearby.Plain Language Summary: The epigenetic consequences of DNA methylation in lung cancer development are still largely unknown. This study used summary data of large-scale genome-wide association studies to investigate the associations between genetically predicted levels of methylation biomarkers and non–small cell lung cancer risk at the first time. This study looked at how well larotrectinib worked in adult patients with sarcomas caused by TRK fusion proteins. These findings will provide a unique insight into the epigenetic susceptibility mechanisms of lung cancer.

    • Hydrogenation reactions are industrially important reactions that typically require unfavorably high H-2 pressure and temperature for many functional groups. Herein we reveal surprisingly strong size-dependent activity of Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) in catalyzing this reaction. Based on unambiguous spectral analyses, the size effect has been rationalized by the size-dependent d-band electron structure of the PtNPs. This understanding enables production of a catalyst with size of 1.2 nm, which shows a sixfold increase in turnover frequency and 28-fold increase in mass activity in the regioselective hydrogenation of quinoline, compared with PtNPs of 5.3 nm, allowing the reaction to proceed under ambient conditions with unprecedentedly high reaction rates. The size effect and the synthesis strategy developed herein may provide a general methodology in the design of metal-nanoparticle-based catalysts for a broad range of organic syntheses.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drought is a natural disaster that occurs globally and can damage the environment, disrupt agricultural production and cause large economic losses. The accurate prediction of drought can effectively reduce the impacts of droughts. Deep learning methods have shown promise in drought prediction, with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) being particularly effective in handling spatial information. In this study, we employed a deep learning approach to predict drought in the Fenhe River (FHR) basin, taking into account the meteorological conditions of surrounding regions. We used the daily SAPEI (Standardized Antecedent Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index) as the drought evaluation index. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CNN model in predicting drought events 1~10 days in advance. We evaluated the predictions made by the model; the average Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) between the predicted and true values for the next 10 days was 0.71. While the prediction accuracy slightly decreased with longer prediction lengths, the model remained stable and effective in predicting heavy drought events that are typically difficult to predict. Additionally, key meteorological variables for drought predictions were identified, and we found that training the CNN model with these key variables led to higher prediction accuracy than training it with all variables. This study approves an effective deep learning approach for daily drought prediction, particularly when considering the meteorological conditions of surrounding regions.

    • Plastic pollution has caused significant environmental and health challenges. Corporations that contribute to the manufacture, use, and distribution of plastics can play a vital role in addressing global plastic pollution and many are committing to voluntary pledges. However, the extent to which corporations’ voluntary commitments are helping solve the problem remains underexplored. Here, we develop a novel typology to characterize voluntary commitments to reduce plastic pollution made between 2015 and 2020 by 973 companies, including the top 300 of the Fortune Global 500. We find that 72% of these companies have made some form of commitment(s) to reduce plastic pollution. About 67% of companies participating in voluntary environmental programs (VEPs) and 17% of non-VEP participants made measurable and timebound commitments. However, rather than tackle virgin plastics, most companies target packaging and general plastics and frequently emphasize recycling-related efforts. Growing commitments on plastic pollution are made by large and important companies, but significantly more efforts beyond plastic recycling are required to effectively address plastic pollution challenges.

    • The direct characterization of exoplanetary systems with high-contrast imaging is among the highest priorities for the broader exoplanet community. As large space missions will be necessary for detecting and characterizing exo-Earth twins, developing the techniques and technology for direct imaging of exoplanets is a driving focus for the community. For the first time, JWST will directly observe extrasolar planets at mid-infrared wavelengths beyond 5 μm, deliver detailed spectroscopy revealing much more precise chemical abundances and atmospheric conditions, and provide sensitivity to analogs of our solar system ice-giant planets at wide orbital separations, an entirely new class of exoplanet. However, in order to maximize the scientific output over the lifetime of the mission, an exquisite understanding of the instrumental performance of JWST is needed as early in the mission as possible. In this paper, we describe our 55 hr Early Release Science Program that will utilize all four JWST instruments to extend the characterization of planetary-mass companions to ∼15 μm as well as image a circumstellar disk in the mid-infrared with unprecedented sensitivity. Our program will also assess the performance of the observatory in the key modes expected to be commonly used for exoplanet direct imaging and spectroscopy, optimize data calibration and processing, and generate representative data sets that will enable a broad user base to effectively plan for general observing programs in future Cycles.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Earth Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-6463. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil moisture is an essential component for the planetary balance between land surface water and energy. Obtaining long-term global soil moisture data is important for understanding the water cycle changes in the warming climate. To date several satellite soil moisture products are being developed with varying retrieval algorithms, however with considerable missing values. To resolve the data gaps, here we have constructed two global satellite soil moisture products, i.e., the CCI (Climate Change Initiative soil moisture, 1989–2021; CCIori hereafter) and the CM (Correlation Merging soil moisture, 2006–2019; CMori hereafter) products separately using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with autoencoding approach, which considers soil moisture variability in both time and space. The reconstructed datasets, namely CCIrec and CMrec, are cross-evaluated with artificial missing values, and further againt in-situ observations from 12 networks including 485 stations globally, with multiple error metrics of correlation coefficients (R), bias, root mean square errors (RMSE) and unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE) respectively. The cross-validation results show that the reconstructed missing values have high R (0.987 and 0.974, respectively) and low RMSE (0.015 and 0.032 m3/m3, respectively) with the original ones. The in-situ validation shows that the global mean R between CCIrec (CCIori) and in-situ observations is 0.590 (0.581), RMSE is 0.093 (0.093) m3/m3, ubRMSE is 0.059 (0.058) m3/m3, bias is 0.032 (0.037) m3/m3 respectively; CMrec (CMori) shows quite similar results. The added value of this study is to provide long-term gap-free satellite soil moisture products globally, which helps studies in the fields of hydrology, meteorology, ecology and climate sciences.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heterogeneous integration of InP and GaSb on Si substrates holds a huge potential interest in near-infrared and mid-infrared optoelectronic devices. In this study, 2-inch 180-nm-thick InP and 185-nm-thick GaSb thin layers were successfully transferred onto the Si substrates to form high-quality and ultra-smooth InP/Si and GaSb/Si templates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and the ion-slicing technique together with selective chemical etching. The relocation of the implantation-introduced damage in the sacrificial layer enables the transfer of relatively defect-free InP and GaSb thin films. The sacrificial layers were completely etched off by selective chemical etching, leaving ultra-smooth epitaxial surfaces with a roughness of 0.2 nm for the InP/Si template and 0.9 nm for the GaSb/Si template, respectively. Thus, the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process was not required to smooth the surface which usually introduces particles and chemical contaminations on the transferred templates. Furthermore, the donor substrate is not consumed and can be recycled to reduce the cost, which provides a paradigm for the sustainable and economic development of the Si integration platform.

  • The Present-day Mass Function of Star Clusters in the Solar Neighborhood
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 966:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work analyzes the present-day mass function (PDMF) of 93 star clusters utilizing Gaia Data Release 3 data, with membership determined by the StarGo machine-learning algorithm. The impact of unresolved binary systems on mass estimation is rigorously assessed, adopting three mass ratio profiles for correction. The PDMF is characterized by the power-law index, α, derived through a robust maximum likelihood method that avoids biases associated with data binning. The value of α for stars between the completeness limited mass of Gaia (with a mean 0.3 M⊙ for our cluster samples) and 2 M⊙ exhibits stability for clusters younger than 200 Myr, decreasing for older clusters, particularly when considering stars within the half-mass radius. The PDMF of these star clusters is consistent with a dynamically evolved Kroupa initial mass function via the loss of low-mass stars. Cluster morphology shows a correlation with α, as α values exhibit a decreasing trend from filamentary to tidal-tail clusters, mirroring the sequence of increasing cluster age. The dependence of α on the total cluster mass is weak, with a subtle increase for higher-mass clusters, especially outside the half-mass radius. We do not observe a correlation between α and the mean metallicity of the clusters. Younger clusters have lower metallicity compared to their older counterparts, which indicates that the older clusters might have migrated to the solar neighborhood from the inner disk. A comparison with numerical models incorporating a black hole population suggests the need for observations of distant, older, massive open clusters to determine whether or not they contain black holes.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Manufacturing Processes. - 1526-6125 .- 2212-4616. ; , s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hot-wire directed energy deposition using a laser beam (DED-LB/w) is a method of metal additive manufacturing (AM) that has benefits of high material utilization and deposition rate, but parts manufactured by DED-LB/w suffer from a substantial heat input and undesired surface finish. Hence, regulating the process parameters and monitoring the process signatures to control the final quality during the deposition is crucial to ensure the quality of the final part. This paper explores the dynamic modeling of the DED-LB/w process and introduces a parameter-signature-quality modeling and control approach to enhance the quality of modeling and control of part qualities that cannot be measured in situ. The study investigates different process parameters that influence the melt pool width (signature) and bead width (quality) in single and multi-layer beads. The proposed modeling approach utilizes a parameter-signature model as F1 and a signature-quality model as F2. Linear and nonlinear modeling approaches are compared to describe a dynamic relationship between process parameters and a process signature, the melt pool width (F1). A fully connected artificial neural network is employed to model and predict the final part quality, i.e., bead width, based on melt pool signatures (F2). Finally, the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed parameter-signature-quality modeling is tested and verified by integrating the parameter-signature (F1) and signature-quality (F2) models in the closed-loop control of the width of the part. Compared with the control loop with only F1, the proposed method shows clear advantages and bears potential to be applied to control other part qualities that cannot be directly measured or monitored in situ.

    • Toxoplasma can reach distant organs, especially the brain, leading to a lifelong chronic phase. However, genes involved in related in vivo processes are currently unknown. Here, we use focused CRISPR libraries to identify Toxoplasma genes that affect in vivo fitness. We focus on TgWIP, whose deletion affects Toxoplasmadissemination to distant organs. We show that TgWIP is secreted into the host cell upon invasion and interacts with the host WAVE regulatory complex and SHP2 phosphatase, both of which regulate actin dynamics. TgWIP affects the morphology of dendritic cells and mediates the dissolution of podosomes, which dendritic cells use to adhere to extracellular matrix. TgWIP enhances the motility and transmigration of parasitized dendritic cells, likely explaining its effect on in vivofitness. Our results provide a framework for systemic identification of Toxoplasmagenes with in vivo effects at the site of infection or on dissemination to distant organs, including the brain.

  • Material stiffness in cooperation with macrophage paracrine signals determines the tenogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2198-3844. ; 10:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stiffness is an important physical property of biomaterials that determines stem cell fate. Guiding stem cell differentiation via stiffness modulation has been considered in tissue engineering. However, the mechanism by which material stiffness regulates stem cell differentiation into the tendon lineage remains controversial. Increasing evidence demonstrates that immune cells interact with implanted biomaterials and regulate stem cell behaviors via paracrine signaling; however, the role of this mechanism in tendon differentiation is not clear. In this study, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates with different stiffnesses are developed, and the tenogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exposed to different stiffnesses and macrophage paracrine signals is investigated. The results reveal that lower stiffnesses facilitates tenogenic differentiation of MSCs, while macrophage paracrine signals at these stiffnesses suppress the differentiation. When exposed to these two stimuli, MSCs still exhibit enhanced tendon differentiation, which is further elucidated by global proteomic analysis. Following subcutaneous implantation in rats for 2 weeks, soft biomaterial induces only low inflammation and promotes tendon-like tissue formation. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that soft, rather than stiff, material has a greater potential to guide tenogenic differentiation of stem cells, which provides comprehensive evidence for optimized bioactive scaffold design in tendon tissue engineering.

    • The sensitive parameters affecting the dark current characteristics are further studied by using InAs/GaSb type II superlattice (T2SL) pBpp structure long wavelength Infrared photodetectors. Generation of recombination (G-R), surface leakage current and tunneling current are the main components of dark current. Using pBpp structure can suppress them effectively, thereby decreasing dark current. Based on the k · p method, the band structure of InAs/GaSb T2SL and InAs/AlSb T2SL can be obtained by solving the 8-band k · p model. We have calculated different doping levels of pBpp detector and different layer thicknesses of pBpp detector. For pBpp device, we consider the dark current for different contact layer doping and different absorber layer doping. We also study the influence of different contact layer thicknesses and different absorber layer thicknesses on dark current. The dark current of pBpp detector is dominant by tunneling current at low temperature, and diffusion is the main limiting mechanism in dark current at high temperature, for barrier layer inhibits generation-recombination contribution. Eventually, the dark current of a pBpp structure has been calculated for versus voltage at 77 K.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2331-7019. ; 10:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction between a rapidly oscillating atomic-force-microscope tip and a soft-material surface is described with use of both elastic and viscous forces in a moving-surface model. We present the simplest form of this model, motivating our derivation with the models ability to capture the impact dynamics of the tip and sample with an interaction consisting of two components: interfacial or surface force, and bulk or volumetric force. Analytic solutions to the piecewise linear model identify characteristic time constants, providing a physical explanation for the hysteresis observed in the measured dynamic-force-quadrature curves. Numerical simulation is used to fit the model to experimental data, and excellent agreement is found with a variety of different samples. The model parameters form a dimensionless impact-rheology factor, giving a quantitative physical number to characterize a viscoelastic surface that does not depend on the tip shape or cantilever frequency.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. - 1557-9662 .- 0018-9456. ; 71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Piezoelectric linear motors play an important role in ultra-precision manufacturing technology. However, the complex nonlinear relationship between the input and output of the piezoelectric linear motors limits their further application. In this paper, to achieve precise motion control for a piezoelectric linear motor, a composite data driven-based adaptive control method is proposed, consisting of a correction controller, model free adaptive controller (MFAC), and low pass filter. The proposed control method addresses the demand for a precise model of the piezoelectric linear motor and solely relies on the linear model and input/output measurement data. First, an experimental test is implemented to analyze the complex nonlinearity between input and output signals of the controlled system, and a correction control is employed based on the dynamic linear sub-model of the piezoelectric linear motor to improve its dynamic and static characteristics. Then, to avoid the influence of unmodeled dynamics, such as inherent nonlinearity and external vibration, a MFAC is established as a feedback controller using data driven technology. In addition, a low pass filter is incorporated into the feedback loop to eliminate high frequency measurement noise in the system, thus improving the transient response of the MFAC method. Finally, the theoretical analysis of the error convergence is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified via comparisons with a correction control method, correction control-based digital sliding-mode control method, and correction control-based MFAC method. The experimental results indicate that the proposed control method is suitable for engineering applications. In particular, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) for the third-order S-curve tracking using the proposed is reduced by more than 15%, compared with the RMSEs for the cases with contrast control methods.

  • Ingår i: Cancer Research. - 0008-5472. ; 76:9, s. 2778-2790
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Breast and ovarian cancer patients harboring BRCA1/2 germline mutations have clinically benefitted from therapy with PARP inhibitor (PARPi) or platinum compounds, but acquired resistance limits clinical impact. In this study, we investigated the impact of mutations on BRCA1 isoform expression and therapeutic response. Cancer cell lines and tumors harboring mutations in exon 11 of BRCA1 express a BRCA1-Δ11q splice variant lacking the majority of exon 11. The introduction of frameshift mutations to exon 11 resulted in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay of full-length, but not the BRCA1-Δ11q isoform. CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing as well as overexpression experiments revealed that the BRCA1-Δ11q protein was capable of promoting partial PARPi and cisplatin resistance relative to full-length BRCA1, both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, spliceosome inhibitors reduced BRCA1- Δ11q levels and sensitized cells carrying exon 11 mutations to PARPi treatment. Taken together, our results provided evidence that cancer cells employ a strategy to remove deleterious germline BRCA1 mutations through alternative mRNA splicing, giving rise to isoforms that retain residual activity and contribute to therapeutic resistance.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Science China Technological Sciences. - 1869-1900 .- 1674-7321. ; 66:5, s. 1397-1407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Piezo-actuated stage is a core component in micro-nano manufacturing field. However, the inherent nonlinearity, such as rate-dependent hysteresis, in the piezo-actuated stage severely impacts its tracking accuracy. This study proposes a direct adaptive control (DAC) method to realize high precision tracking. The proposed controller is designed by a time delay recursive neural network. Compared with those existing DAC methods designed under the general Lipschitz condition, the proposed control method can be easily generalized to the actual systems, which have hysteresis behavior. Then, a hopfield neural network (HNN) estimator is proposed to adjust the parameters of the proposed controller online. Meanwhile, a modular model consisting of linear submodel, hysteresis submodel, and lumped uncertainties is established based on the HNN estimator to describe the piezo-actuated stage in this study. Thus, the performance of the HNN estimator can be exhibited visually through the modeling results. The proposed control method eradicates the adverse effects on the control performance arising from the inaccuracy in establishing the offline model and improves the capability to suppress the influence of hysteresis on the tracking accuracy of piezo-actuated stage in comparison with the conventional DAC methods. The stability of the control system is studied. Finally, a series of comparison experiments with a dual neural networks-based data driven adaptive controller are carried out to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed controller.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) is a histone-modifying enzyme, which is a significant target for anticancer drug research. In this work, 40 reported tetrahydroquinoline-derivative inhibitors targeting LSD1 were studied to establish the three-dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationship (3D-QSAR). The established models CoMFA (Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (q2 = 0.778, (Formula presented.) = 0.709)) and CoMSIA (Comparative Molecular Similarity Index Analysis (q2 = 0.764, (Formula presented.) = 0.713)) yielded good statistical and predictive properties. Based on the corresponding contour maps, seven novel tetrahydroquinoline derivatives were designed. For more information, three of the compounds (D1, D4, and Z17) and the template molecule 18x were explored with molecular dynamics simulations, binding free energy calculations by MM/PBSA method as well as the ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) prediction. The results suggested that D1, D4, and Z17 performed better than template molecule 18x due to the introduction of the amino and hydrophobic groups, especially for the D1 and D4, which will provide guidance for the design of LSD1 inhibitors.

    • Heat dissipation in high-heat flux micro-devices has become a pressing issue. One of the most effective methods for removing the high heat load of micro-devices is boiling heat transfer in microchannels. A novel approach to flow pattern and heat transfer recognition in microchannels is provided by the combination of image and machine learning techniques. The support vector machine method in texture characteristics successfully recognizes flow patterns. To determine the bubble dynamics behavior and flow pattern in the micro-device, image features are combined with machine learning algorithms and applied in the recognition of boiling flow patterns. As a result, the relationship between flow pattern evolution and boiling heat transfer is established, and the mechanism of boiling heat transfer is revealed.

    • The development of intelligent automobiles puts forward higher requirements for HMI design. The information obtained by drivers through vision accounts for 80%. As a key part of visual perception, color affects driving performance. This article investigates vehicle interface design about icon-background contrast. Three colors commonly used in car-machine interface are chosen: red, green and blue, and contrast is divided into five levels under daytime and nighttime. The participants tested three colors and the five contrasts in an experiment using classic paradigm of secondary tasks. We collected data from their driving behavior and subjective experience, trying to find a most appropriate value. The results show that recommended contrast values under different lighting conditions are 3:1 to 4:1 for red, blue, and green during the day; 3:1 for red at night, and 5:1 for blue and green, so that the vehicle central console color design references are formed.

  • Enabling Real-Time Quality-of-Service and Fine-Grained Aggregation for Wireless TSN
  • 2022

    • Wireless Time-Sensitive Networking (WTSN) has emerged as a promising technology for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. To meet the latency requirements of WTSN, wireless local area network (WLAN) such as IEEE 802.11 protocol with the time division multiple access (TDMA) mechanism is shown to be a practical solution. In this paper, we propose the RT-WiFiQA protocol with two novel schemes to improve the latency and reliability performance: real-time quality of service (RT-QoS) and fine-grained aggregation (FGA) for TDMA-based 802.11 systems. The RT-QoS is designed to guarantee the quality-of-service requirements of different traffic and to support the FGA mechanism. The FGA mechanism aggregates frames for different stations to reduce the physical layer transmission overhead. The trade-off between the reliability and FGA packet size is analyzed with numerical results. Specifically, we derive a critical threshold such that the FGA can achieve higher reliability when the aggregated packet size is smaller than the critical threshold. Otherwise, the non-aggregation scheme outperforms the FGA scheme. Extensive experiments are conducted on the commercial off-the-shelf 802.11 interface. The experiment results show that compared with the existing TDMA-based 802.11 system, the developed RT-WiFiQA protocol can achieve deterministic bounded real-time latency and greatly improves the reliability performance.

  • Discrimination of drugs and explosives in cargo inspections by applying machine learning in muon tomography
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Qiangjiguang Yu Lizishu/High Power Laser and Particle Beams. - : Editorial Office of High Power Laser and Particle Beams. - 1001-4322. ; 30:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A previously under-explored difficulty in cargo inspections is how to efficiently detect drugs and explosives concealed in large dense metals. Cosmic ray muon tomography is a promising non-destructive imaging technique to solve the problem because muons are naturally generated in the atmosphere and have sufficient energy to completely penetrate large dense containers. In this work it is investigated that to what extent drugs and explosives of a certain size could be discriminated from air background and metals by muon tomography within acceptable measuring time. A Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation is built based on the Tsinghua University MUon Tomography facility (TUMUTY) and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier based on machine learning is trained to differentiate drugs and explosives from air background and metals automatically. For various 20 cm×20 cm×20 cm objects, with 10 min to 30 min measuring time, drugs and explosives could be discriminated from background and metals by muon tomography with an error rate of about 1%. With 1 min, the error rate deteriorates to 12.9%.

  • 'Can You Move It?' : The Design and Evaluation of Moving VR Shots in Sport Broadcast
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2023 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality, ISMAR 2023. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 839-848
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Virtual Reality (VR) broadcasting has seen widespread adoption in major sports events, attributed to its ability to generate a sense of presence, curiosity, and excitement among viewers. However, we have noticed that still shots reveal a limitation in the movement of VR cameras and hinder the VR viewing experience in current VR sports broadcasts. This paper aims to bridge this gap by engaging in a quantitative user analysis to explore the design and impact of dynamic VR shots on viewing experiences. We conducted two user studies in a digital hockey game twin environment and asked participants to evaluate their viewing experience through two questionnaires. Our findings suggested that the viewing experiences demonstrated no notable disparity between still and moving shots for single clips. However, when considering entire events, moving shots improved the viewer's immersive experience, with no notable increase in sickness compared to still shots. We further discuss the benefits of integrating moving shots into VR sports broadcasts and present a set of design considerations and potential improvements for future VR sports broadcasting.
