    • We have developed a rotatable hemispherical spectrometer with good energy and angular resolution, which can be positioned with the lens axis arbitrarily within a solid angle of 1 pi. The collection angle of the emitted electrons with respect to the polarization axis of the light is set by means of a three-axes goniometer, operating under vacuum. An important requirement for this setup was the possibility to perform coincidences between the electron analyzed by the spectrometer and one or several other particles, such as ions, electrons, or photons. The lens system and the hemispheres have been designed to accommodate such experimental demands, regarding parameters such as the resolving power, the acceptance angle, or the width of the kinetic energy window which can be recorded for a given pass energy. We have chosen to detect the impact position of the electron at the focal plane of the hemispherical analyzer with a delay line detector and a time-to-digital converter as acquisition card rather than using a conventional charge-coupled device camera.     • We report a facile synthesis of the angiotensin II type 2 receptor antagonist EMA401, which recently passed phase II clinical trials, in high overall yield. The synthesis of the key phenylalanine intermediate involved the formation of an a-nitro cinnamic ester and its reduction followed by a Pictet-Spengler cyclization, which furnished the tetrahydroisoquinoline core structure. Next, EMA401 was separated from its enantiomer EMA402 by four recrystalizations of a diastereomeric salt in 98% ee. All steps were performed on gram scale with emphasis on avoiding column purification and using readily available low cost starting materials and reagents.

    • Numerical values of the second-order aberration coefficients are given for two classes of toroidal fields, namely (1) the ‘quasi-spherical’ field with c=1, c’≠-1, and (2) fields with c in the region 1.6-1.8. For the ‘quasi-spherical’ fields, the second-order coefficients are given as functions of the deflection angles ω for 90°⩽ω⩽180°. The third-order coefficient for the spherical field are given in the same region. For the devices in the second class, which have one intermediary axial image, the second-order coefficients are studied as functions of c and ω, subject to the conditions that double-focusing should be obtained. The conditions under which the radial and axial image planes coincide are considered. The influence of axially curved entrance and exit surfaces is investigated. One special case (ω=180°, c=1.691, c’=-1.11), which may be favourable for an electron monochromator is discussed

    • The EISCAT Scientifi c Association, together with a number of collaborating institutions, has recently completed a feasibility and design study for an enhanced performance research radar facility to replace the existing EISCAT UHF and VHF systems. This study was supported by EU Sixth-Framework funding. The new radar retains the powerful multi-static geometry of the EISCAT UHF, but will employ phased arrays, direct-sampling receivers, and digital beamforming and beam steering. Design goals include, inter alia, a tenfold improvement in temporal and spatial resolution, an extension of the instantaneous measurement of full-vector ionospheric drift velocities from a single point to the entire altitude range of the radar, and an imaging capability to resolve small-scale structures. Prototype receivers and beamformers are currently being tested on a 48-element, 224 MHz array (the "Demonstrator") erected at the Kiruna EISCAT site, using the EISCAT VHF transmitter as an illuminator.

    • A new energy and angle resolved analyzer for photoelectron spectroscopy is described. This analyzer is based on combining an advanced focusing electron lens system with time-of-flight measurements. A position sensitive detector gives time and position for the electron events. From this information the kinetic energy and start direction are obtained through a transformation procedure, giving both a large luminosity and a very high energy resolution. The instrument analyses the angles of emission of the electrons in a cone with 30 degrees opening angle and simulations show that extremely high energy and angular resolution can be achieved simultaneously. We report the first results from this instrument, obtained at the PM-3 beam line at BESSY (Berlin, Germany). This analyzer opens up new possibilities for angular resolved electron spectroscopy, band-mapping and other applications.
