  • Structured knowledge transfer through online education : Mutual benefits for academia and industry
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scientists are required to disseminate the results of research to the society and companies participating in research projects. The dissemination procedure normally consists of seminars, scientific and layman journal contributions, and conferences that generally are not flexible and timely enought to capture industrial needs. In an effort to accelerate knowledge transfer and technology implementation to sustain and improve competitiveness, Jönköping University has developed a one-year online master programme in cast metals and processes in collaboration with the industry. The collaboration includes development of the curriculum, case studies, lectures and study visits. To explore the development process, we performed interviews and a survey with participating students/professionals, teachers and industrial partners. Our results show that a profound two-way knowledge transfer took place, and that course content and teaching were highly relevant to the industry. Furthermore, industry and academia engaged in new joint research collaborations. Consequently, we hypothesize that the procedure for structured knowledge transfer can be implemented in materials education at advanced level to foster engagement between university, industry and society.

  • Platelet Monoamine Oxidase B Activity Did Not Predict Destructive Personality Traits or Violent Recidivism: A Prospective Study in Male Forensic Psychiatric Examinees.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Neuropsychobiology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1423-0224 .- 0302-282X. ; 61:2, s. 87-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: This prospective study was designed to replicate previous findings of an association between the platelet monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) activity and factors of relevance for criminal behaviour in a well-documented clinical study population. Methods: Subjects (n = 77, aged 17-76 years, median 30 years) were recruited among consecutive perpetrators of severe interpersonal violent and/or sexual crimes referred to forensic psychiatric investigation. Participants were extensively investigated by structured psychiatric, psychological and social workups, including state-of-the-art rating instruments and official records, and with laboratory tests including venous blood sampling for determination of MAO-B activity. A subset of 36 individuals had lumbar punctures to measure cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of monoamine neurotransmitter metabolites. Results: Platelet MAO-B activity did not show any significant correlation with assessments of childhood behavioural disorders, substance abuse, or psychosocial adversity, nor with any crime-related factors, such as scores on the Life History of Aggression Scale, the Psychopathy Checklist or recidivistic violent crime. No significant correlation was found between MAO-B and any of the monoamine metabolites. Analyses in subgroups of smokers/non-smokers did not change this overall result. Conclusions: The findings of the present study did not support the use of MAO-B as a biological marker for aggression-related personality traits or as a predictor for violent recidivism among violent offenders.

  • Neurochemical measures co-vary with personality traits: Forensic psychiatric findings replicated in a general population sample
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Psychiatry Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-7123 .- 0165-1781. ; 178:3, s. 525-530
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neurobiological markers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and in serum, previously found to co-vary with destructive personality traits in violent offenders, were explored in a general population sample of 21 patients undergoing knee surgery. Results on the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) were compared with CSF/serum albumin ratios and serum concentrations of beta-trace protein (beta TP) (as markers for blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability), to CSF/serum albumin ratios between the dopamine and serotonin metabolites homovanillic acid (HVA)/5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (HIM) and to CSF and serum ratios between activated thyroid hormone (T3) and its precursor T4. Serum beta TP concentrations correlated with CSF/serum albumin ratios (P=0.018), but not with preoperative serum creatinine concentrations. Serum beta TP correlated significantly with Monotony Avoidance and Impulsiveness: CSF HVA/5-HIAA ratios with Irritability and low Cooperativeness. The beta TP is a potential serum marker for the integrity of the BBB that does not necessitate lumbar puncture. Thyroid hormones did not correlate with personality traits. As reported in forensic psychiatric patients, aggressive, unempathic personality traits were thus associated with increased dopaminergic activity in relation to the serotonergic activity and impulsivity to increased BBB permeability also in a general population group. • Fri eller ställd. Om friställda industriarbetare i periferin - exemplet Lear i Bengsfors
  • 2002

  • Restricted cortical and amygdaloid removal of vesicular glutamate transporter 2 in preadolescent mice impacts dopaminergic activity and neuronal circuitry of higher brain function.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Journal of neuroscience : the official journal of the Society for Neuroscience. - 1529-2401 .- 0270-6474. ; 29:7, s. 2238-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A major challenge in neuroscience is to resolve the connection between gene functionality, neuronal circuits, and behavior. Most, if not all, neuronal circuits of the adult brain contain a glutamatergic component, the nature of which has been difficult to assess because of the vast cellular abundance of glutamate. In this study, we wanted to determine the role of a restricted subpopulation of glutamatergic neurons within the forebrain, the Vglut2-expressing neurons, in neuronal circuitry of higher brain function. Vglut2 expression was selectively deleted in the cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala of preadolescent mice, which resulted in increased locomotor activity, altered social dominance and risk assessment, decreased sensorimotor gating, and impaired long-term spatial memory. Presynaptic VGLUT2-positive terminals were lost in the cortex, striatum, nucleus accumbens, and hippocampus, and a downstream effect on dopamine binding site availability in the striatum was evident. A connection between the induced late-onset, chronic reduction of glutamatergic neurotransmission and dopamine signaling within the circuitry was further substantiated by a partial attenuation of the deficits in sensorimotor gating by the dopamine-stabilizing antipsychotic drug aripiprazole and an increased sensitivity to amphetamine. Somewhat surprisingly, given the restricted expression of Vglut2 in regions responsible for higher brain function, our analyses show that VGLUT2-mediated neurotransmission is required for certain aspects of cognitive, emotional, and social behavior. The present study provides support for the existence of a neurocircuitry that connects changes in VGLUT2-mediated neurotransmission to alterations in the dopaminergic system with schizophrenia-like behavioral deficits as a major outcome.

  • Natural IgM antibodies in the immune defence against neoehrlichiosis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Infectious Diseases. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2374-4235 .- 2374-4243. ; 49:11-12, s. 809-816
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Neoehrlichiosis is an infectious disease caused by the tick-borne bacterium Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis. Splenectomy and rituximab therapies are risk factors for severe neoehrlichiosis. Our aim was to examine if neoehrlichiosis patients had low levels of natural IgM antibodies and/or were hypogammaglobulinemic, and if such deficiencies were associated with asplenia and vascular complications. Methods: Neoehrlichiosis patients (n=9) and control subjects (n=10) were investigated for serum levels of IgG, IgA, and IgM, and for levels of natural IgM antibodies to pneumococcal polysaccharides (6B, 14), and to the malondialdehyde acetaldehyde epitope of oxidized LDL. The multivariate method Projection to Latent Structures was used to analyze the data. Results: The levels of natural IgM antibodies of various specificities were decreased or not measurable in half of the studied patients with neoehrlichiosis. Only one patient and one control subject were hypogammaglobulinemic. An inverse relationship was noted between the levels of natural IgM antibodies and the development of deep vein thrombosis. Unexpectedly, no association was seen between having or not having a spleen and the levels of natural IgM antibody levels in the circulation. Conclusions: Neither hypogammaglobulinemia nor lack of natural IgM antibodies alone predisposes for severe neoehrlichiosis. The importance of the spleen in the immune defence against Ca. N. mikurensis probably lies in its capacity to generate or maintain specific antibodies.

  • A GSM speech coder implemented on a customized processor architecture
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: ISCAS '93, 1993 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems. - 0780312813 ; , s. 235-238
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • - A GSM speech coder has been implemented on a custom DSP using a system for design of arbitrary processor architectures. The speech coder has been generated from a high level description to netlist. The design system allows implementation in various technologies and a netlist for Plessey gate array has been generated. Due to the rigid specification of the speech coder, the advantages of a custom DSP can not be fully utilized and a result in clock cycles and ROM storage comparable to a standard DSP is achieved.

  • Custom DSP Design of a GSM Speech Coder
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of VLSI Signal Processing. - 0922-5773. ; 11:3, s. 213-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The GSM speech coder for digital mobile telephones has been designed on a custom DSP using an environment for development of arbitrary processor architectures. A netlist of the speech coder has been generated from a high level description in a presented design environment. Improvement of the performance both by modifying the high level description and by hand optimization of the microcode is discussed. Advantages of a user interactive system were stepwise refinement leads to a competitive result is thus demonstrated. Simulation has been performed at algorithm, microcode, and transistor level for consistency check. To avoid dependency of a specific vendor the design environment allows implementation in various technologies and a netlist for a Plessey gate array has been generated as an example.
