  • An increase in sudden unexpected cardiac deaths among young Swedish orienteers during 1979-1992
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: European Heart Journal. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0195-668X .- 1522-9645. ; 17:6, s. 902-910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Sixteen cases of sudden unexpected cardiac death, 15 males and one female, are known to have occurred among young Swedish orienteers from 1979 to 1992, of which seven cases occurred between 1989 and 1992. This is considered to be indicative of an increased death rate. RESULTS: Histopathological evaluation showed myocarditis in a higher than expected proportion of cases. In one such case, which we studied before the sudden unexpected death occurred, the victim had suffered a Chlamydia pneumoniae infection verified by serology, and a nucleotide sequence was found in the heart and lung by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that hybridized with a probe specific for that organism. Male Swedish orienteers do not, however, seem to have an increased rate of exposure to this agent. No further sudden unexpected deaths among young orienteers have occurred over the past 3.5 years. At the beginning of that period, attempts were made to modify training habits and attitudes.

  • The importance of quality requirements in software platform development - a survey
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Thirty-Fourth Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-34). - 0769509819
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a survey where some quality requirements that commonly affect software architecture have been prioritized with respect to cost and lead-time impact when developing software platforms and when using them. Software platforms are the basis for a product-line, i.e. a collection of functionality that a number of products are based on. The survey has been carried out in two large software developing organizations using 34 senior participants. The prioritization was carried out using the Incomplete Pairwise Comparison method (IPC). The analysis shows that there are large differences between the importance of the quality requirements studied. The differences between the views of different stakeholders are also analyzed and it is found to be less than the difference between the quality requirements. Yet this is identified as a potential source of negative impact on product development cost and lead-time, and rules of thumb for reducing the impact are given.

  • The Arctic summer atmosphere : an evaluation of reanalyses using ASCOS data
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry And Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 14:5, s. 2605-2624
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Arctic has experienced large climate changes over recent decades, the largest for any region on Earth. To understand the underlying reasons for this climate sensitivity, reanalysis is an invaluable tool. The Arctic System Reanalysis (ASR) is a regional reanalysis, forced by ERA-Interim at the lateral boundaries and incorporating model physics adapted to Arctic conditions, developed to serve as a state-of-the-art, high-resolution synthesis tool for assessing Arctic climate variability and monitoring Arctic climate change. We use data from Arctic Summer Cloud-Ocean Study (ASCOS) to evaluate the performance of ASR and ERAInterim for the Arctic Ocean. The ASCOS field experiment was deployed on the Swedish icebreaker Oden north of 87 degrees N in the Atlantic sector of the Arctic during August and early September 2008. Data were collected during the transits from and to Longyearbyen and the 3-week ice drift with Oden moored to a drifting multiyear ice floe. These data are independent and detailed enough to evaluate process descriptions. The reanalyses captures basic meteorological variations coupled to the synoptic-scale systems, but have difficulties in estimating clouds and atmospheric moisture. While ERAInterim has a systematic warm bias in the lowest troposphere, ASR has a cold bias of about the same magnitude on average. The results also indicate that more sophisticated descriptions of cloud microphysics in ASR did not significantly improve the modeling of cloud properties compared to ERA-Interim. This has consequences for the radiation balance, and hence the surface temperature, and illustrate how a modeling problem in one aspect of the atmosphere, here the clouds, feeds back to other parameters, especially near the surface and in the boundary layer.

  • Dorsal Rhizotomy for Spasticity Management in Cerbral Palsy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cerebral Palsy. - Cham : Springer International Publishing AG. ; , s. 1-10
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is a neurosurgical procedure for the relief of spasticity interfering with motor function in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP). The goal of the treatment is to improve function as well as reduce pain and discomfort related to severely increased spasticity. SDR is an ablative procedure that results in lifelong effects on function in the central nervous system. One must also be aware that performing SDR does not guarantee that other treatments for spasticity or orthopedic corrective procedures can be avoided. For SDR to be an effective treatment, it must be combined with specific physiotherapy over a long period of time. Today there exists a good body of evidence that SDR is an effective means of treating patients with the CP subtype spastic diplegia, as long as selection criteria are rigorously adhered to. The procedure is also safe with little risk of short or long-term complications. Further studies on long-term effects late in adulthood will show if the treatment effects are stable over time.

  • Evaluation of human seroreactivity to Bartonella species in Sweden
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Microbiology. - 0095-1137 .- 1098-660X. ; 37:5, s. 1381-1384
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among the species that compose the expanding genus Bartonella, thus far only B. henselae and B. quintana have reportedly been isolated from humans in Europe. To evaluate the prevalence of Bartonella infection in Sweden,we conducted a retrospective serological examination of 126 human serum samples. These samples were analyzed for antibodies to B. henselae, B. quintana, and B. elizabethae, Serum samples from 100 blood donors, who spanned the ages of 20 to 60 and had no apparent clinical signs of illness, were also studied as a control group. An immunoglobulin G indirect fluorescence antibody assay revealed 4 and 8.3% Bartonella positivity rates for the blood donor and patient group, respectively, when a cutoff titer of greater than or equal to 64 was chosen. Among the blood donors, four were seropositive to B, elizabethae; one of these also had concordant positive titer to B. henselae, In the patient group, 14 serum samples were positive against Bartonella spp, These serum specimens represented nine patients. In three of these seropositive patients, paired serum samples displayed a fourfold increase in antibody titer to at least one of the three antigens, These three patients are discussed. In this report we also present a case study of a 60-year-old Swedish male with fatal myocarditis, Postmortem serological analysis revealed a high titer against B. elizabethae, PCR and nucleotide sequencing of the myocardial tissue from this patient, and of Liver tissue from one of the other three patients, showed sequences similar to B. quintana, The age, geographical origin, animal contacts, and serological response pattern to the different Bartonella antigens differed among the four patients. This study substantiates the presence of Bartonella spp, in Sweden, documents the seroreactivity to three Bartonella antigens in Swedish patients, and reports the first two cases of B. quintana-like infections in Sweden.

  • Sequential changes in hematologic and biochemical parameters in African tick bite fever.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Clin Microbiol Infect. - : Elsevier BV. - 1198-743X. ; 9, s. 678-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sequential changes and to estimate the frequencies of abnormalities in some commonly measured biological variables in patients with African tick bite fever (ATBF), an emerging spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis in international travelers to rural sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: A study was done of hemoglobin, total leukocyte count, absolute lymphocyte count, blood platelet count and serum levels of C-reactive protein (S-CRP), alanine aminotransferase (S-ALAT), aspartate aminotransferase, lactic dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, sodium and creatinine during the first two weeks of illness and prior to the institution of antirickettsial therapy in 108 patients with travel-associated ATBF. RESULTS: There were significant falls in mean total leukocyte count, mean absolute lymphocyte count, and mean platelet count, and significant increases in mean S-CRP and S-ALAT. During the first ten days of illness, elevated S-CRP, lymphopenia and elevated S-ALAT were detected in 91.7%, 73.3% and 40.7% of patients, respectively. Most abnormalities were mild. For 55 patients who underwent both S-CRP and absolute lymphocyte count determination, at least one parameter was abnormal in 52 (94.5%) patients. CONCLUSIONS: The sequential changes in many biological parameters during the acute phase of ATBF mimic those reported in other SFG rickettsioses. Mild abnormalities are frequent, with increased S-CRP and lymphopenia being the two most consistent findings

  • In situ tomographic display for interactive data visualization
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the third Nordic conference on Human-Computer Interaction.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With tomographic in situ visualization we present a novel approach to interactive data visualization and exploration. This visualization concept is useful for presentation of spatially co-located information that is normally not visible to the human's eye. The tomographic in situ display allows for interactive cutting through data in space by using a spatially tracked and calibrated display. In this paper we describe the technical apparatus of our prototype and describe an application for the tomographic in situ visualization in the field of indoor climate studies.
