  • Navigating Data Challenges: AI-Driven Decision Support for Product-Service System Development
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Solution providers are transitioning from product-centric models to service-oriented solutions. This shift has led to the rise of Product-Service Systems (PSS), which offer a holistic approach by integrating physical products with associated services. However, the inherent complexity and collaborative nature of PSS development present a significant challenge: information gathering, analysis, and knowledge building. This is further amplified in the early stages of PSS development due to data challenges such as uncertainty, ambiguity, and complexity. This complicates informed decision-making, potentially leading to the risk of sub-optimal outcomes and impacting the success of final offerings. This research proposes an AI-powered data analysis approach to address these data challenges and augment the decision-making process of PSS development. The focus is on supporting early-stage decision-making, as decisions made at this stage greatly impact the success of final solutions. The research investigates how data can be utilized and visualized to extract actionable insights, ultimately facilitating informed decision-making.The presented research demonstrates that AI-powered data analysis effectively supports informed decision-making in early-stage PSS development. By extracting actionable insights from complex data, handling data limitations, and enabling informed strategic decisions, knowledge sharing, and collaboration are facilitated among stakeholders. Furthermore, integrating AI with visualization tools fosters knowledge building and a deeper understanding of system behavior, ultimately leading to more successful PSS solutions. The efficacy of AI-powered data analysis for handling diverse data types across application domains is demonstrated, potentially leading to benefits such as a deeper understanding of system behavior and proactive solution strategies. These advancements contribute to developing decision support systems specifically for PSS development.Overall, this research demonstrates the efficacy of AI-powered data analysis in overcoming data challenges and empowering decision-makers in early-stage PSS development. This translates to more informed choices, leading to the creation of successful and efficient PSS solutions.

  • We Need a Discipline of Invention
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Inventing the Almost Impossible. - : Springer Nature. - 9783031362231 ; , s. 1-5
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter introduces the book Inventing the Almost Impossible, which combines various case studies, examples, and lessons for creating, teaching, funding, and leading radical innovation. The book’s broader aim is to establish a scholarly foundation for the study of invention, which is a fundamental human capacity that has shaped society since prehistoric times, yet it has not been given the full attention it deserves. We have invited a spectrum of authors from academia, industry, and other areas of work to consider an angle for inventing almost impossible ideas, which are just within the realm of possibility and have the potential to produce radical innovation. Overall, this collection seeks to raise questions that explore the multifaceted aspects of invention more deeply and establish invention as a complementary element of technological creation, research into development, and new product development.

  • Emergency flood bulletins for Cyclones Idai and Kenneth : A critical evaluation of the use of global flood forecasts for international humanitarian preparedness and response
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction. - : ELSEVIER. - 2212-4209. ; 50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humanitarian disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan (SE Asia, 2013) and the Horn of Africa drought (2011-2012) are examples of natural hazards that were predicted, but where forecasts were not sufficiently acted upon, leading to considerable loss of life. These events, alongside international adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, have motivated efforts to enable early action from early warnings. Through initiatives such as Forecast-based Financing (FbF) and the Science for Humanitarian Emergencies and Resilience (SHEAR) programme, progress is being made towards the use of science and forecasts to support international humanitarian organisations and governments in taking early action and improving disaster resilience. However, many challenges remain in using forecasts systematically for preparedness and response. The research community in place through SHEAR enabled the UK government's Department for International Development to task a collaborative group of scientists to produce probabilistic real-time flood forecast and risk bulletins, aimed at humanitarian decision-makers, for Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which impacted Mozambique in 2019. The process of bulletin creation during Idai and Kenneth is reviewed and critically evaluated, including evaluation of the forecast information alongside evidence for how useful the bulletins were. In this context, this work seeks to navigate the "murky landscape" of national and international mandates, capacities, and collaborations for forecasting, early warning and anticipatory action, with the ultimate aim of finding out what can be done better in the future. Lessons learnt and future recommendations are discussed to enable better collaboration between producers and users of forecast information.

  • Contribution Model Ecosystem for Resiliency and Sustainability
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Progress in IS. ; Part F3229, s. 101-116
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study tests a novel contribution model inspired by “From Business Model to Contribution Model” through four industry cases to transition towards a sustainable contribution model fostering value co-creation within ecosystems. The framework includes triple-bottom-line value propositions, networked collaboration, comprehensive value-capturing, and clear organizational purpose. Diverse sectors (food, buildings, manufacturing, automotive) are analyzed within this contribution model framework. Applying the contribution model to real-world cases yields empirical data and practical insights, highlighting its potential for positive industry change and ecosystem resilience enhancement. This research advances comprehension of sustainable business models, urging organizations to prioritize sustainable practices, value co-creation, and ecosystem resilience. It establishes a basis for further exploration, encouraging organizations to prioritize sustainable business practices, value co-creation, and ecosystem resilience.

  • End-user activity-based service design in the built environment context : Exploring everyday life in KTH Live-in-Lab
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main goal of this thesis is to communicate the motivation, process, and result of the research project dedicated to exploring the topic of Service Design, based on end-user activities analysis in the built environment context. We have elected to use a KTH Live-in-Lab as a testbed in relation to the chosen living lab network of actors and stakeholders. We see an opportunity to increase the interaction between the building system and the human activity system through the service system integration. In other words, this thesis aims to investigate how new services in the built environment should be designed to support end-user's daily activities and well-being, and at the same time, help operate the building more sustainably (decrease electricity, water usage, and waste production). By following a T-shape research approach, we started with a broader perspective on service design in the context of the built environment. A Delphi method was used for consensus building, and a co-creation approach between multiple stakeholders was adopted for the broad exploration part. The insights of the general study have become a foundation for several case studies that used mixed methods (Sustainable food service and Sleeping quality assessment). The result of the study consists of theoretical and practical implications. From the theoretical perspective, the thesis contributes to service design process improvement using a living lab environment and method and developed a framework for Bi-directional value exchange between the Building System (BS) and the Human Activity System (HAS). During the case studies a service concepts portfolio for KTH Live-in-Lab was co-created with multiple stakeholders, and two concepts were tested with active end-user engagement. The findings have been presented in four journal and two conference papers appended.  Keywords: service design, human activity system, building system, service system, actors network analysis, living lab, sustainable building.

  • Digital Servitization in the Manufacturing Sector : Survey Preliminary Results
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advances in Production Management Systems: Smart Manufacturing and Logistics Systems. - Cham : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 9783031164101 ; , s. 310-320
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the contention of the current industrial landscape, an increasing number of manufacturing firms are experimenting with the transition from product-centric offerings to service-based value concepts and product-service bundles as high-value integrated customer solutions to increase their revenues and build sustainable competitive advantages; a phenomenon known as the “servitization” of manufacturing. Nowadays, consistently with the Industry 4.0 paradigm, these companies have therefore started a process of integrating their traditional value offerings with digital services. This recent strategy is known as “Digital Servitization” and consists of developing new services and/or improving existing ones through digital technologies. However, this transformation is challenging, and companies often struggle to achieve their expectations. Thus, this study aims to shed light on the current state of Digital Servitization strategies in the manufacturing sector based on a survey addressed to the top and middle management. The results obtained by the analysis of the data collected from the survey show an increasing trend towards the adoption of digital technologies for enabling innovation and differentiation in service delivery processes. © 2022, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

  • From Business Model to Contribution Model
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Progress in IS. ; Part F2548, s. 171-179
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A successful business is increasingly concerned with comprehending the challenges and opportunities associated with society’s shift towards sustainability. However, current business model innovation fails to embrace the sustainability dimensions sufficiently. Many organizations lack a process that allows them generate entirely new and viable alternatives for business models. Sustainable development and its three-dimensional framework significantly impact most businesses’ re-organization. The complexity of balancing the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainable development signals the need for a new business model. In this conceptual paper, the authors discuss possible transitioning from the business model to the contribution model, where the value ecosystem and value exchange plays a defining role.

  • Adjusting customer journey mapping for application in industrial product-service systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Environment. - : INDERSCIENCE ENTERPRISES LTD. - 1740-0589 .- 1740-0597. ; 11:3, s. 275-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sales process and the project execution in industrial product-service systems are often complicated, particularly for capital equipment with a long-operational life where there are different actors responsible for the different transactions over the whole lifecycle. This is often further complicated as the supplier is not directly selling to the end customer. The introduction of digital solutions around the product-service system brings an additional channel for interactions. This paper describes how customer journey mapping can support building relationships in a B2B environment for both sales and execution over the operational life of equipment and examine both the products and the services offered throughout the entire journey. Three industrial B2B cases from different segments were investigated. Each journey was mapped, and personas or empathy maps created for each of the key actors. From the cross-case analysis and customer journey mapping a process is derived that provides improved support for industrial firms with customer journey mapping.
