• “How Far Is the Closest Bus Stop?” : An Evaluation of Self-Reported versus GIS-Computed Distance to the Bus among Older People and Factors Influencing Their Perception of Distance
• 2023
• Ingår i: Geomatics. - 2673-7418. ; 3:4, s. 580-596
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Previous research showed that living closer to bus stops could be a factor in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. However, most of the studies relied on self-reported measures of distance, which might be affected by several confounders. In this study, self-reported distances among study participants were compared to actual ones, computed by the use of GIS (Geographic Information System) technology and routing algorithms. We tested whether distance to the bus stop is associated with health and socioeconomic conditions of the respondents, using data among 2398 older people (75–90 years) in three cities in Sweden. We found that several variables including older age, female gender, living alone, and worse health status are associated with an over-estimation of bus stop distance. People who use public transport daily or several times a week and are satisfied with the walking environment in the neighbourhood tend to underestimate bus stop distances. Evidence based on self-reported measures only should be treated cautiously. Considering the limitations still present in open-data-based routing algorithms, the best indication is to combine the subjective with the objective measure of distance. Having the possibility to combine the two measures appears as a sound strategy to overcome the limitations associated with each single measure.

• Access to public mobility services and health in old age : A cross-sectional study in three Swedish cities
• 2017
• Ingår i: Journal of Transport and Health. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-1405. ; 7:Part B, s. 218-226
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Background: Little evidence is available on how public transport features can impact on older people's health. The overarching aim of this paper is to evaluate socio-demographic, health and mobility-related factors correlated with health-related quality of life among people aged between 75 to 90 years old in three Swedish Municipalities. Methods: Within the SEBEM study, a cross-sectional survey using a self-administered postal questionnaire was conducted among 2398 older people aged between 75 and 90 years. Primary outcome of the study was health-related quality of life measured using the SF12 which distinguishes two dimensions of health, i.e. the Physical Composite Score (PCS) and the Mental Component Score (MCS). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the variability study outcomes. Multilevel regression models were used to investigate factors independently correlated with health, controlling for the influence of potential confounders. Results: Higher physical and mental self-reported health is associated with walking more than 500. m on a daily basis, use of a private car and frequent engagement in social activities. Access to the car is only associated with physical health. Mental health scores are significantly lower among those living far from the closest bus stop and never using public transport. Discussion: We provide evidence of epidemiological associations between access to public mobility services and good health in older age. Given the cross-sectional design of our analyses, and the related limitations, the associations found should be investigated more thoroughly by future studies using longitudinal and/or experimental designs.

• Co-designing Communication Technology with and for Families : Methods, Experience, Results and Impact
• 2007
• Ingår i: The Disappearing Computer. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783540727255 ; , s. 99-119
• Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• In academia and in industry there have been many projects focusing on technology in domestic spaces and the Smart home (Hindus 2001; Smith 2000). The focus has been on the place, i.e. the home, and the people living there, rather than the people and the places they inhabit. In this chapter we share experience from using cooperative and novel design methods developed within the project interLiving – Designing Interactive, Intergenerational Interfaces for Living Together. The methods were intended to involve families, both as groups and individuals of all ages, as well as the multidisciplinary research group, in co-design of communication devices for families. We highlight methods, results and impact for future research and development. Research presented here aimed to develop novel and appreciated communication artefacts and to improve design methods within participatory design.

• Design as a Democratic Process - and Implications for Innovation
• 2016
• Ingår i: Action Research for Democracy. - New York & Abington : Routledge. - 9781138961227 - 9781315659909 ; , s. 39-61
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We discuss Participatory Design (PD) as a democratic process and its implications for innovation. We see strong similarities between PD and Action Research (AR), as both seek to create some kind of change based on the aquisition of knowledge. The knowledge aquired in PD and AR is intended to guide a sequence of necessary activities that lead to a desired change, yet there are also some fundamental differences between them.

• User Oriented Cooperative Interaction Design : A multidisciplinary project course
• 2006
• Ingår i: Proceedings of HCI Educators Workshop - Inventivity: Teaching Theory, Dsign and Innovation in HCI. - : University of Limerick. ; , s. 81-84
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• In this paper we give a “case story” experience from development, practice and results from a method and project course on User Oriented Interaction Design. The course is intended for last year Masters’ students from different backgrounds, computer science as well as social science and design disciplines. The course was inspired by student and teacher participation in the Apple Interface Design Project 1993, 1994 and 1995, when it was established as a regular course at three higher educational institutions in Stockholm within different faculties. From 2003 students and teachers from the course participate in the Siena Design Project. Experience from teaching and practicing methods from HCI, e.g. Cooperative/Participatory design, industrial design, e.g. Functional Analysis, and ethnography, e.g. Contextual Inquiry, is described. Experience and results from project work with user involvement and conceptual prototypes is exemplified and discussed, especially from the perspective of multidisciplinary cooperation. Finally project evaluation criteria and lessons learnt are presented.

• Co-designing methods for designing with and for families
• 2003
• Ingår i: Proceedings Of 5th European Academy Of Design Conference, Barcelona, 28–30 April 2003.
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This paper describes co-operative design work regarding the development of IT artefacts to be used for communicating within families. It shows advantages of codesigning together with users. Thereby obtaining ‘real life’ experience, understanding and knowledge about their needs and desires. Since there was no specific solution or technology in mind from the beginning, several different methods were used in combination to investigate what had meaning to the family members. Some of the methods used are: cultural probes, interviews, observations, workshops, video brainstorming, prototyping in the homes, technology probes and individual assignments. The researchers represent different academic professions, mainly ethnography, industrial design, interaction design, computer science. To minimize the problem of ‘handing over’ information, researchers from at least two different backgrounds participate in all work done together with the families.

• Design Space Exploration : co-operative creation of proposals for desired interactions with future artefacts
• 2009
• Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• This thesis critically reflects on co-operative design workshops that I have conducted. The basic method used in these workshops draws on the participants’ embodied knowing. In the over twenty workshops that are analysed here a wide range of participants have been involved: family members, employees, persons with disabilities, and other stakeholders like manufacturers, service providers and civil servants. The topics have varied, but they have mostly been related to ICT products and services. Most of the workshops were conducted within various research projects. In order to analyse this diverse range of workshops I use several different theories and concepts. I articulate and analyse the design aspects of the activities by using established design theories and concepts. The conceptual tool design space, meaning all possible design proposals, is used for understanding the design process. I also use theories from other fields in order to analyse three different aspects of the workshops: the participants’ activities, the designers’ responsibility, and the process. To analyse the way that the participants co-operatively create knowledge, theories of interpersonal actions are used; to analyse the work done by the designer/conductor, theories of frames are used; and to analyse the process, the theory of actualisation and realisation is used. During the workshops the participants co-operatively make scenarios, props and video prototypes in order to create proposals for desired interactions with future artefacts. Contributions include accounts of critical situations during the workshops and suggested strategies for dealing with them. Some implications are relevant to the design field in general, for example the importance of a process where the participants trust each other, learn from each other and work effectively with difficult issues by creating multiple proposals that facilitate understanding of the design space. I also offer arguments about why it is better to see activities, props and prototypes as mainly constitutive rather than as only representative. Video prototypes on DVD and seven publications are included in the thesis.

• InterLiving : A multi-disciplinary cooperative design approach
• 2004
• Ingår i: Workshop Proceedings of CHI2004. - Vienna.
• Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• In this position paper we describe how experience from aICT research project, interLiving, can influence HCIeducation. The project also raises interesting aspects on therole of design research. The interLiving project is anexample of a successfully conducted cooperative designprocess and could therefore have impact on both HCI anddesign educations. These impacts could influence the viewon multi-disciplinary work, participatory design and whatmethods to use. This is a research case study that can be used to show howfruitful close collaboration between people with differentbackground can be. It also shows that it is equallyrewarding with close collaboration with users. We believethat this experience can have great impact on HCI andindustrial design education.

• Management, markets and politics : statistical screening for historical footprints in Arctic coal mining
• 2011
• Ingår i: Problems & Perspectives in Management. - Sumy : Business Perspectives. - 1727-7051 .- 1810-5467. ; 9:3, s. 131-149
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We look at the economic performance of the main (coal mining) company operating inSvalbardbased on time series data from 1922 to 2006 and use statistical techniques to detect structural breaks in economic indicators decomposed into components that the company control or influence and components that are exogenous. The analysis suggests distinctive historical periods and illustrates that statistical time series analysis may be used as a screening device to discriminate between noise and real change.
