  • Initial multi-node and antenna transmitter and receiver architectures and schemes; Deliverable D5.1
  • 2016
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This deliverable provides the initial concepts and solutions from the technical work related to multi-antenna and multi-node transceiver schemes in millimetre wave (denoted as 6-100GHz) spectrum. It also briefly presents the use cases on which the work will be based and categorises the solutions in terms of their applicability to access, backhaul and relay deployments. Another important contribution from this report is the modelling of the hardware impairments in millimetre wave transceivers and the analysis of their impact on system performance.

  • A shell-like model for general purpose programming
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. - 9781450362573
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shell scripting languages such as bash are designed to integrate with an OS, which mainly involves managing processes with implicit input and output streams. They also attempt to do this in a compact way that could be reasonably typed on a command-line interface. However, existing shell languages are not sufficient to serve as general-purpose languages-values are not observable except in raw streams of bytes, and they lack modern language features such as lexical scope and higher-order functions. By way of a new programming language, Magritte, we propose a general-purpose programming language with semantics similar to bash. In this paper, we discuss the early design of such a system, in which the primary unit of composition, like bash, is processes with input and output channels, which can be read from or written to at any time, and which can be chained together via a pipe operator. We also explore concurrency semantics for such a language.

  • Comparison of different methods for calculating the paramagnetic relaxation enhancement of nuclear spins as a function of the magnetic field
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 128:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The enhancement of the spin-lattice relaxation rate for nuclear spins in a ligand bound to a paramagnetic metal ion [known as the paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE)] arises primarily through the dipole-dipole (DD) interaction between the nuclear spins and the electron spins. In solution, the DD interaction is modulated mostly by reorientation of the nuclear spin-electron spin axis and by electron spin relaxation. Calculations of the PRE are in general complicated, mainly because the electron spin interacts so strongly with the other degrees of freedom that its relaxation cannot be described by second-order perturbation theory or the Redfield theory. Three approaches to resolve this problem exist in the literature: The so-called slow-motion theory, originating from Swedish groups [Benetis et al., Mol. Phys. 48, 329 (1983); Kowalewski et al., Adv. Inorg. Chem. 57, (2005); Larsson et al., J. Chem. Phys. 101, 1116 (1994); T. Nilsson et al., J. Magn. Reson. 154, 269 (2002)] and two different methods based on simulations of the dynamics of electron spin in time domain, developed in Grenoble [Fries and Belorizky, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 204503 (2007); Rast et al., ibid. 115, 7554 (2001)] and Ann Arbor [Abernathy and Sharp, J. Chem. Phys. 106, 9032 (1997); Schaefle and Sharp, ibid. 121, 5387 (2004); Schaefle and Sharp, J. Magn. Reson. 176, 160 (2005)], respectively. In this paper, we report a numerical comparison of the three methods for a large variety of parameter sets, meant to correspond to large and small complexes of gadolinium(III) and of nickel(II). It is found that the agreement between the Swedish and the Grenoble approaches is very good for practically all parameter sets, while the predictions of the Ann Arbor model are similar in a number of the calculations but deviate significantly in others, reflecting in part differences in the treatment of electron spin relaxation. The origins of the discrepancies are discussed briefly.

  • On measurement of intangible assets: A study of robustness of partial least squares
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Total quality management. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1360-0613 .- 0954-4127. ; 11:7, s. 897-907
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The customer asset is an important intangible. Its value depends, for example, on the customer satisfaction level. Thus, it is important to monitor that level, and to identify cost-efficient actions to improve it. The European Customer Satisfaction Index (ECSI) system is based on a structural model for such monitoring, a model that is estimated by partial least squares (PLS). The robustness of PLS applied on an ESCI-like measurement model is studied in the present paper. Monte Carlo simulations show that PLS is reasonably robust against multicollinearity, skew response distributions and various types of model misspecifications. This is true, in particular, when estimating the customer satisfaction index.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Total quality management. - : Taylor & Francis Ltd. - 1360-0613 .- 0954-4127. ; 13:8, s. 1099-1106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Any organization has to listen to its external customers and clients. In a number of studies it has been shown that the long-term success of a corporation is closely related to its possibility to adapting to customer needs and changing preferences. Satisfying customers should thus be a goal in its own right for all future-oriented organizations. In order to monitor customer satisfaction and to take action to improve it, a number of different methods have been devised and implemented in practice. However, for the purpose of real usefulness, a number of criteria have to be fulfilled on any such measurement system, not least if the ambition is to compare and benchmark. This is the spirit in which the Pan-European intiative to develop, launch and implement a system for comparable aggregate (national) Performance Satisfaction Index studies (the EPSI Rating) has evolved. In the paper the EPSI Rating model for comparable Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) is presented and the fulfilment of the quality criteria are elaborated, based on three years of national studies. In this context, possibilities and limitations for systematic comparisons are highlighted using a combined time-series and cross-section approach. It is also illustrated how the EPSI Rating results may be combined with company specific measures using a similar framework in order to arrive at proposals for strategic and operational improvements. Furthermore, lessons learned so far are discussed and an agenda for future development is presented.

  • Shot-noise suppression effects in InGaAs planar diodes at room temperature
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 647:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, the noise characteristics of InGaAs planar diodes are studied. The presence of a recessed region originates a barrier in the potential profile, which can modulate the passage of ballistic carriers along the structure. This effect, in turn, may lead to suppressed levels of noise with respect to the full Poissonian value due to Coulomb interaction. With the aim of evidencing such phenomenon, the noise properties of a set of devices with different dimensions have been measured at room temperature. Some evidence of potential shot-noise suppression is observed in the results, but the undesired effect of resistive contacts and accesses has been found to be a limiting factor to quantify the suppression accurately.

  • Structural analysis and measurement of customer perceptions, assuming measurement and specifications errors
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Total quality management. - : Taylor & Francis Ltd. - 1360-0613 .- 0954-4127. ; 12:7-8, s. 873-881
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In previous research (e.g. Cassel et al., 1999,Journal of Applied Statistics26, pp. 435-446; Cassel et al., 2000, Total Quality Management, 11, pp. 897-907) the bias and precision effects, for various specification problems, on the structural analysis and measurement of customer perceptions have been studied. In this paper the combined effects of some of the most significant problems, misspecifications and skew response distributions, and certain types of measurement errors, are studied. The measurement errors considered reflect the bias due to the inertia of respondents in adapting to changes. In the situation of repeated measurements, the later response tends to be biased towards the former response. This effect can be modelled by implementing certain change filtering assumptions. A simulation study using the European Performance Satisfaction Index (EPSI) structure demonstrates that the EPSI measurement methodology using partial least squares is very robust with respect to the problems introduced in the simulations. This is true, in particular, when estimating the inner structure of the model and when estimating the outer measurement relations of the model. The estimated values of the latent variables (such as the customer satisfaction index) are affected in an expected way.

  • Cortical thickness and resting-state cardiac function across the lifespan : A cross-sectional pooled mega-analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Psychophysiology. - : Wiley. - 0048-5772 .- 1469-8986 .- 1540-5958. ; 58:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the association between autonomic nervous system [ANS] function and brain morphology across the lifespan provides important insights into neurovisceral mechanisms underlying health and disease. Resting-state ANS activity, indexed by measures of heart rate [HR] and its variability [HRV] has been associated with brain morphology, particularly cortical thickness [CT]. While findings have been mixed regarding the anatomical distribution and direction of the associations, these inconsistencies may be due to sex and age differences in HR/HRV and CT. Previous studies have been limited by small sample sizes, which impede the assessment of sex differences and aging effects on the association between ANS function and CT. To overcome these limitations, 20 groups worldwide contributed data collected under similar protocols of CT assessment and HR/HRV recording to be pooled in a mega-analysis (N = 1,218 (50.5% female), mean age 36.7 years (range: 12–87)). Findings suggest a decline in HRV as well as CT with increasing age. CT, particularly in the orbitofrontal cortex, explained additional variance in HRV, beyond the effects of aging. This pattern of results may suggest that the decline in HRV with increasing age is related to a decline in orbitofrontal CT. These effects were independent of sex and specific to HRV; with no significant association between CT and HR. Greater CT across the adult lifespan may be vital for the maintenance of healthy cardiac regulation via the ANS—or greater cardiac vagal activity as indirectly reflected in HRV may slow brain atrophy. Findings reveal an important association between CT and cardiac parasympathetic activity with implications for healthy aging and longevity that should be studied further in longitudinal research.

  • Does social capital influence small business entrepreneurship? : Differences between urban and rural China
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The annals of regional science. - : Springer Nature. - 0570-1864 .- 1432-0592. ; 70:3, s. 819-837
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the relationship between social capital and small business entrepreneurship in China. Unlike previous studies that focus solely on rural or urban residents, this paper pays more attention to the differences between them. According to our study, social capital has both positive and negative impacts on small business entrepreneurship. Based on the data drawn from China General Social Survey, we find that the impact of social capital differs significantly between rural and urban areas. In rural China, residents who have higher social capital tend to have entrepreneurial behaviors, while higher social capital leads to lower intention of small business entrepreneurship in urban China. Individuals whose parents have the experiences of small business tend to have small business entrepreneurial activities; individuals who are better educated tend to find regular jobs instead of having their own small business. The results suggest that small business entrepreneurship in rural China might be “entrepreneurship by necessity.”.

  • Characterization of Complex Optical Modulation Formats at 100 Gb/s and Beyond by Coherent Optical Sampling
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 30:24, s. 3747-3759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical fiber communication systems are migrating toward the use of sophisticated, nonbinary, modulation formats. It is thus important to develop measurement techniques and solutions capable of unambiguously quantifying such signals and associated hardware. Although one can adapt certain techniques developed for wireless signal characterization, significant differences exist between optical and RF wireless implementations of advanced modulation formats. To meet this measurement demand we present a method for characterizing high symbol rate multilevel modulation optical signals with high fidelity, based on coherent optical sampling, as a complement to the standard real-time electrical sampling approach. The technique enables constellation-and waveform monitoring, bit-error rate and error-vector magnitude analysis, which makes it suitable for transmitter characterization.

  • Measuring environmental impact on society in the EFQM system
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Total quality management. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1360-0613 .- 0954-4127. ; 12:1, s. 125-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The EFQM Business Excellence Model is used by many larger European Corporates to measure and manage their quality development processes. One target (or results) dimension in that model deals with society results. The perhaps most important quality aspect within that dimension concerns environmental issues. In the present paper a Society Result Environmental Index is introduced. Its main purpose is to provide support for cost efficiently managing investments for environmental improvement to secure better financial results. The measurement procedure that is suggested provides information about the market perception of the environmental status and, even more important, it gives information about how to prioritize profitable environmental improvement. The methodology suggested meets the highest statistical requirements for 'best practice' measurement.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Total quality management & business excellence. - : Routledge. - 1478-3371 .- 1478-3363. ; 16:10, s. 1149-1159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper provides empirical results on potential impacts from customer perceived quality and customer satisfaction on various financial indicators for the Swedish real estate market. Quality data are taken from the Swedish Real Estate Barometer, and financial data from the SFI/IPD Swedish Property Index. Results provide some support for the hypothesis that investments to improve customer satisfaction are first cost driving, but will, towards the latter part of the time period examined (1997-2002), significantly and positively impact profitability. The main driver for this seems to be reputation and positive word-of-mouth due to improved customer satisfaction.

  • Competition, Change, and Coordination and Collaboration: Tracing News Executives’ Perceptions About Participation in Media Innovation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journalism Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1461-670X .- 1469-9699. ; 22:1, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technological disruptions and increasing competition in the digital mediascape have fundamentally altered the market conditions for news media companies, raising corresponding concerns about the future of journalism. News media firms can adapt their business models by more purposefully focusing on media innovation, or the development and implementation of new processes, products or services. Specifically, this article focuses on innovation-centric coordination and collaboration-namely, coordination of knowledge and innovation activities among social actors in news media organizations. In doing so, this article builds on the knowledge-based view (KBV) of the firm and its core argument that coordination of knowledge is essential for organizational innovation. It presents findings from a series of cross-sectional surveys with newspaper executives carried out bi-annually from 2011 to 2017, examining executives' perceptions of collaborative potential for digital media innovation at the intersection of editorial, business, and information technology (IT) departments. The findings suggest that there has been a significant increase in perceived collaboration more recently, and that the IT department is perceived to have become more important to innovation over time.

  • Perceptions of Intra-Organizational Collaboration and Media Workers’ Interests in Media Innovations
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Media Innovations. - 1894-5562. ; 1:2, s. 52-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article contributes with a unique quantitative study of newspaper executives’ perceptions of the interest and collaboration contained within digital media innovation among staff in the editorial, business and IT departments. Two research questions are explored: (1) Do newspaper executives perceive that there is diverging interest in digital media innovation across the editorial, business and IT departments of their organization? (2) Amid digital media innovation, and also in relation to the interest in such activities among departments, do newspaper executives’ perceive that the collaboration between members of editorial, business and IT departments has increased? The empirical analysis draws upon two surveys of Norwegian newspaper executives conducted in April 2011 and April 2013. Results show that the various explorations of digital media are not perceived to have fostered increased collaboration between the actors in the three departments. However, there was a significant relationship related to the size of newspapers measured by circulation: larger newspapers had higher scores on intra-organizational collaboration. Media workers involved in production (editorial staff of the newsroom) and sales (business department) are perceived to be significantly less interested in digital innovation work compared to their colleagues in the IT department. Multivariate analysis revealed the technologists perceived interest in change to be a key predictor for perceived change in intra-organizational collaboration. This indicates the important role of the IT department, in relation to the newsroom and the business department, for innovation relating to the production and distribution of news.

  • Social networks, job satisfaction and job searching behavior in the Chinese labor market
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: China Economic Review. - : Elsevier. - 1043-951X. ; 43, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study first investigates determinants of job searching strategies and then examines if social networks are connected with better job outcomes. Unlike previous studies that focus solely on income, this paper pays more heed to job satisfaction. Based on data drawn from China General Social Survey, we find that disadvantaged job seekers rely primarily on informal channels; whereas experienced and better-educated job seekers tend to search for jobs through formal channels. However, those reaping the largest benefit from using networks are the job seekers who are able to use formal and informal channels jointly. By disaggregating the whole sample, we further find that the promoting effect of network use is contingent on factors such as gender and types of jobs. Network use brings about larger benefits to female and job seekers target to prestigious occupations. Finally, it appears that whether a job seeker can receive influential help depends primarily on the social status of the contacts rather than their tie strength. The results of our paper thus urge us to examine the combination of different searching strategies rather than studying them separately.

  • Will female managers support gender equality? : The study of “Queen Bee” syndrome in China
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Asian journal of social psychology (Print). - : Wiley. - 1367-2223 .- 1467-839X. ; 25:3, s. 544-555
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research aimed to study queen bee syndrome in China. Results from a nationwide survey (Chinese General Social Survey) revealed that female managers are less likely to defend the existing gender hierarchy. We also found that female managers are analogous to men in many other aspects, such as hobbies and values. Female managers adopt a mixed strategy to deal with social identity threats. Individual characteristics, such as educational attainments and the speed of career development, are significant predictors of queen bee traits. The results refute the claim that queen bees syndrome is common in the workplace. It is also important to note that different dimensions of queen bee syndrome are not always interrelated.
